Mayor’s Message I sincerely welcome all to 2015 Jazz, Food and Wine Festival whether they be visitors or locals. This year’s festival is celebrating its 36th year and as always, centres on celebrating our community as a whole. The event allows people from across the district to come together, relax and enjoy the activities, spread over four feature filled days. I trust that this year’s event will provide countless opportunities for enjoyment with a huge range of attractions and entertainment on offer. 4

The Mildura Jazz, Food and Wine Festival is one of the major events on our spring calendar and what better way to enjoy our balmy weather than with fine food, a glass of wine and some jazz. The Festival celebrates all our city has to offer and reaffirms Mildura’s reputation as Victoria’s Food Bowl. This year will be no exception with top quality produce and fine wines again on show, at a number of our many fine restaurants and wineries. The event also brings together traditional and mainstream jazz. A fine array of musicians, bands and traditional jazz ensembles feature in the 2015 Festival program. There is an increasing number of great venues hosting performances and it is pleasing to see the local community embracing the Festival. I wish everyone attending, organising and working at the 2015 Jazz, Food and Wine Festival a successful and enjoyable time. Cr Glenn Milne Mayor, Mildura Rural City Council

At 36 years old, this is one of the longest running Jazz Festivals in Australia. Arts Mildura collaborates with the River City Jazz Club to develop and present a festival of Traditional and Contemporary Jazz music in some wonderful locations on and beside the iconic Murray River. I again welcome locals and visitors to this region to enjoy the best of what we have, music, food wine, environment and climate. Get together with your friends and enjoy, the 2015 Mildura Jazz Food and Wine Festival.

Welcome to the 36th Mildura Jazz Food and Wine Festival The Mildura Jazz Food and Wine Festival presents an opportunity for the people of this region, and the many visitors to Mildura, to get together and celebrate. Combining the key ingredients of music, food and wine under the blue skies and starry nights of Mildura is a powerful recipe for a good time. A strong community knows how to enjoy itself well. One of the ways Mildura exhibits its strength is in the presentation of the Mildura Jazz Food and Wine Festival.

Paul Lambeth Director, Arts Mildura

BAND PROFILES

DOUBLE A JAZZ BAND

DON MAYNE TRIO

Reg Packer’s Double A Jazz Band is a Territory band that has played around Western Victoria and Southern New South Wales for 15 years or more with virtually the same line up. The Double A Jazz Band plays regularly at Jazz Festivals such as Halls Gap, Tooleybuc, and Barham as Jazz Clubs including Echuca, Ballarat, Geelong, and Werribee serving up their brand of hot traditional jazz from the 1920s and 1930s.

The Don Mayne Trio first met each other whilst studying Jazz studies at Adelaide University. Their repertoire consists of the classic and mainstream tunes of the 30’s and 40’s right up to modern tunes and original compositions. All three members are educators in local schools and are passionate about bringing the next generation of jazz musicians from the classroom out onto the stage. Band Line-Up: Don Mayne (Brass) Lewis White (Bass) Luke Peak (Drums)

10

Band Line-Up: David Lole (Piano) Joe Pryke (Trumpet) Bill Beasley (Trombone) Garry Richardson (Reeds) Don Blainey (Sousaphone) Reg Packger (Banjo) Doug Wignall (Drums)

GLENELG BRASS BAND

KELSEY JAMES QUINTET

Located in North Glenelg, a Community Brass Band that holds regular concerts of their own, supporting the City of Adelaide’s official occasions, including marches in 6 or 7 Pageants each year, visits to other Bands and although serious about their music, they generally have a good time.

“Kelsey James’ voice can make the grandest theatre and the most beersodden dingy pub into an intimate epiphany. The lyrics are both disarmingly confessional and casually matter-of-fact, the poetry of everyday disillusionment and joy. Behind these heart-breakingly intimate yet whimsical songs, you can almost make out the sounds of fractured bones healing themselves. Who knows if they are hers or yours?”

MILDURA DISTRICT BRASS BAND As The oldest service organisation in the district, The Mildura District Brass Band celebrated its 125th birthday this year.

Band Line-Up: Kelsey James Sam O’Halloran Adam Russo Nic Ryan-Glenie Tom Flenady 11

MARYBOROUGH TRADITIONAL JAZZ ENSEMBLE The Maryborough Traditional Jazz Ensemble has been playing jazz music for many years at various festivals, jazz clubs and private functions throughout Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. They are well known for their style of foot tapping & dancing music. Their range consists of 1920s/1930s jazz as well as Australian composed tunes.. Band Line-Up: Ken Collins (Trumpet & Vocals) Gordon Coulson (Trombone & Vocals) Barry Currie (Reeds & Vocals) Bob Franklin (Keyboard & Vocals) Paul Emery (Bass) Bryan Hodges (Drums) 12

IWAN & ANDREA’S JAZZ Local pop/rock duo Iwan (guitar) and Andrea Soebardi (vocals) embark on their first foray into the world of jazz for the MJF&W Festival. They join forces with bass player David Harris and guitarist Jake Underwood to present an eclectic set or two of jazz renditions that cross the genres of Pop, Rock, blues, Brazilian and Latin. Band Line-Up: Iwan Soebardi (Guitar) Andrea Soebardi (Vocals) David Harris (Bass) Jake Underwood (Guitar) Jeff Becker (Drums)

NICKY CRAYSON TRIO Nicky Crayson, Jeremy Sawkins and Hugh Fraser are three musicians who breathe together with an undeniably potent rhythm. Their understanding is solid but free, their music guided by traditions of jazz improvisation but continutally fresh rather than convention bound. Crayson reminds us of the power and beauty of our lives, referencing Billie Holiday to Betty Carter. Sawkins guitar fills the sound with vivid colours and exuberance and Fraser creates new ideas and rhythms. Together they discover a voice and langauge as they travel through jazz standards, exciting forms, elongating phrases, reaching out for new harmonies and creating beautiful music.

RED CLIFFS SECONDARY COLLEGE JAZZ ENSEMBLE The Red Cliffs Secondary College Band is comprised of students from year 7 through to year 11, the school’s ensemble has been a major contributor to community events throughout Red Cliffs for many years. The band has been extremely successful at the Mildura Eisteddfods, and many current and past members of the band have been rewarded with personal accolades for their musical abilities. Conducted by Don Mayne and assisted by Annette Smith, the band delivers music from a wide range of styles. There will be a song for every generation to enjoy.
