The Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival is the foundation stone of Arts Mildura activity in this region. This is a multi-arts festival, bringing a diverse range of arts practice to the people of Mildura, Wentworth and surrounding areas. In keeping with the festival’s intent, this year’s program offers visual and performing arts experiences for the whole community. Kicking off the Festival is the River Party, aligned with the wonderful Sunraysia Farmers Market, a gala night of entertainment beside the iconic Murray River. This event sets the tone for a week of music, theatre, contemporary visual arts, fashion, literature, cinema, a choir event, photography exhibitions and floor talk in addition to a broad range of workshops in Mildura and Wentworth.

This festival provides locals and visitors to this region opportunity to enjoy the qualities of our environment, to be confronted by the inquiry of contemporary artists and to come together and have fun. Arts Mildura acknowledges the many sponsors, supporters and volunteers for their generosity and vision in recognising Arts Mildura as a key driver of cultural innovation and action in this region. On behalf of the board, staff and volunteers, we thank all contributors and wish you an enjoyable and challenging festival. Paul Lambeth Director Arts Mildura

La Trobe University is very proud to continue its long partnership with Arts Mildura for the Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival. The arts are a vital component of thriving communities and we are proud to support visual and performing arts in regional Victoria through our educational and research programs, by sponsoring awards and in presenting public lecture series, events and exhibitions. The Mildura campus of La Trobe University has long fostered artistic connections across Australia and around the globe with programs such as ‘The Edge of the Outback’ and our central role in the Mildura Palimpsest. The University’s commitment to the visual arts in Mildura and across regional Victoria continues to flourish with the Bendigo-based La Trobe Art Institute, now in its second year of operation, which supports the creative arts through providing resources and leadership to coordinate regional arts training, promotion, employment and overall development. 6

The Institute is an important part of our commitment to regional communities and we are fortunate that two Mildura-based community leaders are continuing their association with us as Adjunct Professors of the Institute: Mr Ross Lake, Chair of Arts Mildura, and Mr Stefan de Pieri, a major supporter of the arts. La Trobe has a proud history of providing higher education to regional Victoria and working in partnership with the communities which it serves. Our Mildura campus is playing a vital role in meeting our commitment to regional communities by offering the opportunities that a tertiary education provides. I wish the communities of Mildura and surrounding regions an enjoyable experience through such an exciting and diverse program of culture and arts. Professor John Dewar Vice-Chancellor La Trobe University

Arts suggest different things to different people. For some it’s paintings by artists like Picasso or Pro Hart, for others it is a theatre production with a live audience, for some it is the enjoyment of expression and creativity in other forms. There are those who lovingly display their art and others who enjoy art through a more emotional experience. Personally, I think the word that a lot of us associate with the arts is imagination, it is our imagination that either triggers or is triggered by the art form we enjoy. This year, on behalf of the Mildura Rural City Council, I am delighted to welcome everyone to the 2015 Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival. As one of Australia’s leading arts celebrations, the Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival offers an annual feast of entertainment from fashion to film. The 2015 ten day program kick starts with the festival launch at Jaycee Park and will feature international artists, photo media, the outdoor big screen, a writer’s master

class, guitar duos, exhibitions, workshops and classes. As major sponsors of the Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival, Council is proud that the festival will provide a platform to launch the national tour of Experimental Recharge: 6th Biennial of Media Art, along with world music performances conducted by professional musicians, Valanga and Andrea Khoza. Also new to the festival is the Lens Based Project supported by Photobook Melbourne; curators of artists who are cultivating new ways of perceiving and engaging with photographic medium. I congratulate the dedicated team of workers and volunteers that tirelessly organise this unique event, recognised with “Major Festival Status” by Arts Victoria; showcasing not only a vast program of festivities, but also showcasing the natural beauty and rich heritage of the Mildura region. Councillor Glenn Milne Mayor Mildura Rural City Council 7

HEART OF A DOG (1988) Based on Mikhail Bulgakovs novel, Heart of a Dog is a biting satire of the Soviet Union’s “New Soviet man”. A Hilarious allegory of the Communist revolution and “the revolution’s misguided attempt to radically transform mankind.” 16

KIN DZA DZA! (1986) Try to imagine a film where Woody Allen’s Bananas meets George Lucas’ Star Wars and you’ll have an idea of what you’re in for. Two good Soviet citizens (a Georgian and a Russian) find themselves transported to a strange planet “Pluke”, a planet which seems to parallel the absurdities of life in the Soviet Union.

The intervention is making life more difficult on his remote community, what with the proper policing of whitefella laws that don’t generally make much sense. Richard Flanagan’s work is one example of looking at the personal and local for inspiration. He is part of long tradition of writers who risked looking into the details of what’s closest to hand. But what are we looking for? And what makes a story worth telling? How do you take a risk? This Masterclass will invite the hardest questions of storytelling. 18

Learning Outcomes • What is story? • What is risk taking in storytelling? • Where does story come from? • Where’s the drama? • Why this story? Ticketing Information: Bookings essential via Writers Victoria. http://writersvictoria.org.au/what-s-on/ event/storytelling-masterclass-mildura/
