The Opening Long Weekend Experience is structured as a unique journey throughout Mildura and the region, visiting every artist’s installation and/or performance over four days, so that the audience experiences the full program in an inspiring and collegiate way. Mildura Palimpsest Biennale #10 brings more than 70 artists together from many nations across Australia and around the world and presents a durational two year program of experimental, site-specific, new work, engaging with the theme of everywhere all at once... here. Such an enquiry is inherently intercultural and invites artistic engagement at the contemporary nexus between what might be called ‘the virtual and the grounded’, via a diverse program of durational projects embracing online technology, multiple media platforms and walking country. Mildura is a diverse intercultural zone at the edge of the idea of disurbanityi; a powerful locus of intercultural contemporaneity that is capable of asking the key biennale question: What does connection to country, groundedness and local identity mean in an age of globalisation and technological revolution? Contemporary notions of post-national world order are so replete with ambivalence, that the dissolution of any delimiting intercultural ‘palimpsest’ will rightly be resolute with doubt and belief. Yet, any starting point in the world is of course already ‘out of time’. Mildura Palimpsest Biennale #10 resists the persistent biennale model of a ‘temporary utopiaii’ by inviting experimental and intercultural investigations into such post-national doubt and belief.

nations the Latje Latje, Paakantji, Mutthi Mutthi and Ngiyaampaa peoples; and one of the most diverse local and migrant communities in the country, with over 65 international and 26 Indigenous languages spoken in Mildura. This distinctive cultural character is amplified by the visceral physical transition between the fertile yet liminal irrigated plains of Australia’s largest river and the desert country that stretches out on all sides to the great inland of the Australian continent. At first glance therefore, the Mildura region is a palimpsest of the highest order, a diverse intercultural zone layered with ‘history’ and yet presumed to be off the beaten track of the international art world. However, Mildura is in fact an inland city that harbours a far more complex generative agency, with a significant experimental art legacyiii, capable of interpolating the shifting ground of the contemporary international, from an inland southern hemisphere locus. Concurrently however, outmoded notions of exclusivity and non-transmutable locus are often too presumptuous. Without actively seeking non-hegemonic intercultural collaborative agency that is capable of recognising anew the contemporary simultaneity of ancient knowledge and virtual reality, we remain at risk of Elysian delusion with regard to equitable intercultural discussion. Imagine for a moment that ‘history’ itself is a delimiting concept; and that out of ‘history’ we can perhaps reconfigure the core element of intercultural contemporaneity; the notion that we can be everywhere all at once...here. It is not for any one of us to know how or where such a collaborative journey might take us, but rather that we can be more open to how it might change us.

Engaging with diverse intercultural belief systems that are generated by the global convergence of international traditions, beliefs and technologies, and are breaking with global modernist timelines in meaningful ways, is arguably the central artistic challenge that defines our age.

We invite you to join with the artists for the Mildura Palimpsest Biennale | Opening Long Weekend Experience; a rollicking four day journey of intercultural enquiry, artistic discussion and a rolling series of opening parties celebrating the culmination of this durational program.

For example, we can simultaneously recognise that contemporary knowledge about the continent of Australia and its place in the world has always been held by peoples from the hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations that have always lived here; and we can recognise that contemporary knowledge about the Australian continent is held amid its global intercultural hybridity, made up of every nationality on the planet, forming and reforming ‘Australia’ in perpetuity.

Wiimbia Mayii Kulpa Larna Bush Symposium & Artist Installations The Opening Long Weekend Experience kicks off at the world renowned Mungo National Park with a ‘Bush Symposium’ led by Mungo Elders, Traditional Owners and Mildura Palimpsest Biennale artists and thinkers. Installations and participatory projects by Biennale artists can be viewed after the Symposium. It’s about everybody coming together from all over the country and around the world, to sit on country and share stories. It is also about acknowledging the role that Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area plays in getting the story out about the oldest living culture in the world. I think it’s important for the bigger story to be out there too, in regards to linking and sharing peoples stories from different parts of the world and connecting world heritage areas. Ricky Mitchell (Paakantji) Mildura Palimpsest Biennale #10 kicks off with Wiimbia Mayii Kulpa Larna – a ‘bush symposium’ at Mungo National Park. Part of the MPB#10 - Art is a time machine Symposia Series, Wiimbia Mayii Kulpa Larna was originally proposed by Ricky Mitchell (Paakantji), Biennale artist and MPB#10 organising committee member. The Bush Symposium commences with a Welcome to Country by Paakantji, Mutthi Mutthi and Ngyiaampaa Elders, the presentation of a major ceremonial intercultural and collaborative art work by fourteen Unmapping the End of the World artists, and then an informal discussion, sitting on country, between elders, artists and audience based on the Biennale theme: everywhere all at once...here. A tightly packed program on the day includes lunch and artist installations at Mungo National Park. These include: Yutaka Kobayashi (Japan) World’s First Baker, a durational collaborative project with local Indigenous and non-Indigenous school children, growing, harvesting, grinding and baking native millet into damper in solar ovens, made by the students. Yutaka will also be in discussion with author Bruce Pascoe; Mandi King’s installation, Cloud Catcher, made in collaboration with local Mildura Sunraysia Spinners and Weavers; and Shannon Young’s, Basin Abulations: Lake Mungo, the residue of an epic walk with a shopping trolley and a frozen block of Murray River water across Lake Mungo.

Unmapping the End of the World There are many words for ‘Country’ Kira / Kiida (Barkindji / Paakintji) | Thangurra (Mutthi Mutthi) Ngyiampaa (Ngyiampaa) | Country (Australia) Jimoto (Japan) | Paese (Italy) Unmapping the End of the World is an international, durational contemporary art project that brings together fourteen artists from many nations across Australia, Europe and Japan, to ‘walk country’ together on three continents and to expand the artistic discussion around global intercultural contemporaneity. Unmapping the End of the World aims to shift conventional notions of the singular locus of a Biennale and commences with an official Mildura Palimpsest Biennale #10 journey, between three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, in Australia, Japan and Italy. This collaborative journey specifically acknowledges that the continent of Australia has always been home to many Aboriginal nations by commencing at a site of great significance, not only to the local Paakantji/ Barkindji, Mutthi Mutthi and Ngyiampaa peoples, but also to global knowledge about humanity as a whole. Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area (Mungo National Park) is one of the world’s oldest known sites of human occupation (42,000+ years). The artists then travelled consecutively to the Kumano Kodo UNESCO World Heritage Walk in Japan and the Valcamonica Rock Art UNESCO World Heritage Site in Northern Italy.

Weaving Stories (Murray River), is a major collaborative fibre art installation for the Biennale created by Indigenous weavers from many Murray River nations. Weaving Stories will represent each of these nations in the Biennale exhibition through the unbroken threads of many stories woven together in a narrative of the Murray River and its people. Each of these distinct Indigenous nations brings its own culture, stories and character to the project using native reeds, grasses and other found materials from their region to create an interwoven installation of living culture along the Murray River. Led by master weavers: Clair Bates (Paakantji) in Mildura/Wentworth; Ellen Trevorrow (Ngarrindjeri) in the Coorong; Glenda Nicholls (Waddi Waddi/Yorta Yorta/Ngarrindjeri) from Swan Hill, and Bronwen Razem (Gunditjmara) from Geelong, the central shared vision articulated at the first Mildura workshop in February was a belief in the importance of representing the river as a continuous life force, which has sustained many generations of people of many Indigenous nations across all time. This now includes peoples who have arrived from more than 60 countries across the globe who also depend on the river to sustain their lives. A series of weaving workshops is being held along the river to which all nations are invited. The opening workshop in Mildura in early February was hosted by the Murray Darling Dreamtime Weavers, led by master weaver Clair Bates and was attended by 21 weavers and was the first occasion in memory when senior women from so many nations have gathered together to work towards a shared goal of telling the story of the river and its people. The next workshop was held at Camp Coorong in SA in mid-April and be led by renowned Ngarrindjeri weaver Ellen Trevorrow. In July a third workshop was held in Mildura this time led by master weaver Glenda Nichols who taught a specific technique used to make fish nets. A fourth workshop was also hosted by the Coorong weavers in August. Weaving has always been an important way of keeping in touch with and maintaining the health of the river through the process of collecting reeds. The riverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s environmental degradation has an impact on the availability of traditional reeds used for weaving and the great majority of traditional foods. Environment, culture and food are intimately connected. The Murray & Darling Rivers are like the kitchen, the centre of food production and life, the place where people gather, and the installation will reflect the many changes that have occurred in the way that people now nurture themselves and their culture. The Weaving Stories installation will contain many woven objects and figures created individually and collaboratively. At the heart of the installation a single large collaborative piece will be created in the traditional â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;all hands onâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; manner. This piece unites and contains the installation representing the unbroken thread of many stories woven together.

We are connected by the river in all time, our histories are interwoven with our futures. This hands on project is a material manifestation of global intercultural contemporaneity. Weaving Stories will culminate in a major intercultural contemporary artwork for Mildura Palimpsest Biennale #10 which celebrates the many Indigenous nations living along the Murray & Darling Rivers.

Walking Slowly Downhill Artists Domenico de Clario (Italy/Aus) Steven Rhall (Taungurung) Domenico de Clario (Italy/Aus) will walk the entire length of the Murray River from its source at Mt. Kosciuszko National Park, NSW, to the river mouth at Goolwa, SA. His first step, before setting out on the journey, has been to request permission from Traditional Owners along the Murray River to walk their country. From this first step the project will unfold in as yet unknowable ways. Steven Rhall (Taungurung) will collaborate, document, upload a daily live webcast and pilot the support vehicle for the duration of the journey. Dom de Clario as ‘the walker’ says he “has undertaken the journey because he wants to walk the length of “the most culturally important river in Australia, both since colonization and certainly since time immemorial before it”. Secondly, he wants to approach what is “the most complex and demanding of the many walking projects he’s undertaken as ‘the stranger’, and consequently as ‘the beginner’ he has always been, without assuming, because neither strangers nor beginners have the right to, any prior knowledge of either the country they cross or of its various histories”. Domenico was born in Trieste, Italy, in 1947; he immigrated with his parents and sister to Australia in 1956 and all have lived and worked in Melbourne since then. He wishes to walk upon and through Country (with the permission of its Elders) because he wants to walk the length of the Murray River, from source to mouth, as a beginner; perhaps even as a migrant singing his way through the journey from the watershed of the Murray deep in the Snowy Mountains to the Goolwa River Mouth. Steven Rhall’s interdisciplinary practice responds to the cultural landscape, creating networks of interconnected signs and symbols. Reflecting upon both medium specificity, the meaning of objects and cultural semiotics, Rhall merges post-colonial and interpersonal narratives. Rhall is a Taungurung man from Kulin Nation Country northeast of Melbourne and southwest of Kosciuszko. Known for his photographic practice, his installations often include video, found objects and materials of advertising.

The Mildura Palimpsest Biennale specifically supports Australian and International artists to develop innovative, site-specific new work, via a program of extended residencies, in response to our inland region and its global context. Artist residencies include: studio/accommodation, assistance with equipment and materials, community contacts, partnerships (where appropriate), and artists’ fees for completed work for the Biennale. In 2014/15 artists have booked in for residencies ranging from one week to one year. Projects developed within the Inland Residences Program become part of the Biennale program and are exhibited through various venues in Mildura. uniVARS The uniVARS Postgraduate Program supports selected postgraduate university students to participate in Mildura Palimpsest Biennale. University professors from each participating art school nominated students for a residency in Mildura to make a new site-specific work for Mildura Palimpsest Biennale #10.
