Letter from the Show Director Welcome to the inaugural edition of Art Silicon Valley/San Francisco, Art Miami’s new International Contemporary and Modern Art Fair on the west coast. As Silicon Valley has become the hub for high-tech innovation, we are equally delighted to present an international roster of some of the most creative, successful and pioneering artists of our time. We salute this inventive courage in both industry and the art world, and we look forward to the cultural contribution that we plan to make in this exciting community. This year, our flagship exposition, Art Miami, will celebrate its 25th anniversary as the longest running contemporary and modern art fair in that city, and it is our hope that this kind of successful longevity, supported by an atmosphere of quality and an informed group of distinguished collectors and art enthusiasts, will become a highly anticipated tradition at Art Silicon Valley/San Francisco, as well. The fair will showcase investment quality Contemporary & Modern works of art for acquisition from the 20th and 21st centuries, including emergent talent and new media artists showcasing over 750 artists from 42 countries. We are proud of the illustrious list of notable galleries and recognized artists who will be actively participating in our inaugural year. Within the pages of this catalog you will find a list of first class international galleries from around the world. The main objective of our fair is to service a community, which is rich and diverse in its cultural history and contributions. Art SV/SF will offer both seasoned collectors the opportunity to expand their collections while educating and cultivating newer collectors into the market. It is our belief that this community of new collectors will become the next great caretakers, collectors and philanthropists of the international art market. Please be sure to attend the educational programming presented by One Art Nation, which brings together leading opinion leaders and art industry experts to speak on all levels of collecting as well as visiting all of our notable Bay Area cultural institutions, many of whom are organizing independent exhibitions and events for the fair: Fine Arts Museums of S.F. (Artpoint); Creativity Explored; MACLA; SFADA; SJICA; Stanford Art Spaces; tmoro projects; UC Davis Art Studio; ZERO1; Shipyard Trust For The Arts (STAR); Djerassi Resident Artist Program; Leonardo; and the San Jose Museum of Art. In addition we would like to thank the LEADERS IN SOFTWARE AND ART Foundation (LISA) and their participating artists for their efforts and contribution to the fair. Visitors will be able to see the latest from these highly vetted tech and new media artists throughout select galleries in the fair. We are pleased with the enthusiastic support that we have received from this industrious and inventive community, the local art dealing community, the San Francisco Art Dealers Association, our Main Sponsors; Maserati North America, GRAFF Diamonds, Ruinart Champagne and Calafia Catering along with the San Mateo County Event Center. It is my distinct pleasure to offer a warm welcome to this exciting new fair and to sincerely thank you for your enthusiasm, encouragement and ongoing support.

ZERO1: The Art & Technology Network presents Transcendence by John Slepian, a performance installation that humorously and ironically explores new forms of embodiment in the digital world. Using a hacked toy brainwave sensor, electronics, and powerful actuators, the artist is literally levitated through the power of his mind. Slepian will be performing Transcendence during scheduled hours each day of the art fair. John Slepian’s artwork has been shown at P.S.1/MoMA and Hunter College Art Galleries in New York, the Exploratorium in San Francisco, Axiom Gallery and the Boston Center for the Arts in Boston, and elsewhere in the U.S and Canada. Slepian is currently the Five College Assistant Professor of Art and Technology at the Five College Consortium in Western Massachusetts.
ZERO1 also produces the ZERO1 Biennial, North America’s largest contemporary art festival, featuring works from globally recognized artists that explore technology and digital culture. In four iterations, the ZERO1 Biennial has presented over 600 artists’ works, commissioned over 100 original works of art, created partnerships with over 40 cultural and academic institutions, and attracted over 170,000 visitors. The next ZERO1 Biennial will take place September – December 2015.

San Francisco’s Art Ecosystem on the forefront of many convergences. San Francisco ranks consistently among the healthiest places to live, with a pioneering culinary scene and a wealth of entrepreneurial spirit. In large part due to the creative energy at large, San Francisco sits on the forefront of a wealth of opportunities in the visual arts. Amidst the bustle of our city lies a robust group of galleries, renowned and burgeoning art schools, large-scale development projects with public art requirements, the world’s largest and most-anticipated photography exhibitions, and the impending re-opening of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. San Francisco is home to one of the largest municipal art dealers associations, San Francisco Art Dealers Association (SFADA). Fifty-five members strong, our members range from iconoclasts Gallery Paule Anglim and Fraenkel Gallery to the edgy and market-savvy Ever Gold, Altman Siegel and The McLoughlin Gallery, to name but a few.
2014 presents an interesting time for the global art market to tune into San Francisco. The San Francisco Arts Commission, for example, is awarding nearly $30 million of commissions to artists at the San Francisco Airport and Moscone Convention Center. The development boom here has given rise to $20-40 million of public art requirements. And with the impending re-opening of SFMOMA, all eyes will be on our community, as the museum will unveil its new and growing collection. And, yes, we gallerists here eagerly chase the holy grail of newly-minted technologists and their financiers. It will take an ecosystem, akin to what has developed over time in our technology, tourism and wine industries to work collectively in order to build some of the greatest art enthusiasts of our time. Together we represent thousands of artists in our local communities and beyond. We aid and support our institutions, non-profits and residencies through countless auctions and fund raisers. We serve an infinite variety of collectors, often working together in hopes that each new and established art buyer catches the “bug”, that never ending desire to live with art, to be a part of the art ecosystem.
The San Jose Museum of Art is not your typical museum….and could not be even if it tried! SJMA has a grassroots, against-the-odds history that gave birth to two of the Museum’s defining characteristics: its unpretentious, democratic roots and a perpetual sense of innovation. Open participation and creativity are in SJMA’s DNA: they are the watchwords for this 45thanniversary season. SJMA’s is celebrating both by paying tribute to SJMA’s proud past and by keeping its sights set on being a museum as bold as Silicon Valley deserves. Throughout the year, it will ramp up modes of participation in surprising ways and open up new avenues for artistic experimentation. The centerpiece of the fall is an exhibition that sets out to disrupt the status quo and show that art is anything but just an inanimate object. For Momentum: an experiment in the unexpected, SJMA invited creative movers and shakers from the realms of design, comedy, dance, poetry, and other fields to disrupt the exhibition with their personal responses to the art on view. The interventions will be:
SJMA’s role has always been to build bridges between art and audiences—and to raise awareness of artists’ broad contributions to our lives and to society. Stop by our booth to preview highlights and learn more about how you can be a part of Momentum. SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

STAR and the Hunters Point Shipyard Artists Community Almost as soon as the first artists responded to the offer from founder/ visionary Jacques Terzian to rent art studio space at the old shipyard, someone has wanted them gone. STAR arose out of the need to have an organized defense of the studio space and a public face for the artists’ community. Since 1995 STAR has worked to represent the interests of the artists who work in the abandoned Navy buildings in the southeast corner of San Francisco. Whether participating in the Citizens Advisory Committee, testifying at City Hall or conducting surveys of Shipyard artists to gather information, STAR volunteer board members are working to represent the interests of the artist community.
Artists will continue to occupy nearly 250,000 sq ft of studio space at the Shipyard on into the future. But, what else will be around them? STAR has embraced the vision of a Community Arts Center on an already designated parcel of land adjacent to the studio buildings. This may be an energizing location for participation and exploration in the arts for people of all ages and from a variety of communities. We also envision an Arts District growing up next to the studios and the Arts Center. San Francisco is losing art spaces at an alarming rate, as other uses are more enticing for property owners. We imagine a place, perhaps the last place left in San Francisco, for the arts to put down permanent roots. Achieving that outcome is the work for the next few years for STAR. We invite you to participate and to follow our progress towards our goals.

Currently, with the Hunters Point Shipyard undergoing a massive transformation into housing and commercial uses, the artists need for representation is greater than ever. As part of the development agreement, a new 130 studio building will rise across a plaza from the only studio building that will be preserved. STAR has been very involved in the design of the building, making sure that it will serve the needs of artists now and in the future. STAR successfully fought for such amenities as solar electric panels on the roof, 42 wide doors to every studio, and other design features focused on affordability.

The San Jose ICA is pleased to partner with Art Silicon Valley/San Francisco to present Dandelion Clock, an interactive digital projection by John Carpenter.
SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS
The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) was founded in 1980 to promote greater awareness, understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and its capacity to stimulate our imaginations and illuminate our lives, relationships and communities. Guided by a mission to provide a space where people experience contemporary art and culture, we strive toward a vision of a vibrant arts-friendly world where contemporary art and artists are respected, admired and supported. Core values include supporting artistic innovation, intellectual exploration and social commentary, stimulating dialogue between artists and audience, and making contemporary art accessible to novices and experts alike.
The ICA presents 8-10 professionally curated exhibitions each year that showcase work in all media by talented local, regional and national contemporary artists. We present immersive site-specific installations that would otherwise not be realized in a commercial space. Our group thematic exhibitions feature the work of emerging, mid-career and established artists who address social, cultural and political issues, and Sandbox Projects serve as a catalyst in the creation of new work. Façade, a site-specific window installation, activates the ICA’s front windows and makes contemporary art viewable for those who don’t enter the gallery. A mid-sized gallery located in San Jose’s burgeoning arts SoFA (South First Arts) District, the ICA plays a vital role in our arts and cultural community by presenting and advancing the work of established artists while remaining dedicated to emerging and mid-career regional artists. With exhibitions that represent cultural diversity and encourage experimentation, the ICA has had a significant impact on revitalizing this underrepresented neighborhood located just south of downtown San Jose by attracting on average 20,000 annual visitors. Gallery admission is always free.

To fulfill this mission, the ICA presents innovative visual art exhibitions, engages in educational programs and provides professional support for local artists. At our core lies the belief that the arts play a critical role in sustaining a healthy and vibrant community. In addition to fostering freedom of expression, critical thinking and open dialogue, the ICA’s exhibitions and education programs illustrate the creativity and innovation that are hallmark characteristics of Silicon Valley.

The Invitation is a series of photographs produced in 2014 as interdisciplinary collaborations within the UC Davis art community and outside professionals making significant contributions to their field. Each work is produced from discussions, studio visits, and correspondence between two researchers. Separate and distinct fields of inquiry are crystallized into a single picture. The exchange reveals a cross section of investigations underway at UC Davis, interpreted visually. The picture is the conversation.

The mission of the Djerassi Resident Artists Program is to support and enhance the creativity of artists by providing uninterrupted time for work, reflection, and collegial interaction in a setting of great natural beauty, and to preserve the land on which the Program is situated. The Djerassi Resident Artists Program is internationally recognized as one of the eminent artist residency programs. Since its founding in 1979, the Program has provided over 2,200 residencies free of charge to artists of all disciplines. Recognizing that the struggle from creative inspiration to accomplished realization is a chain reaction of efforts, experiments, decisions, and revisions done in relative solitude amidst the demands of daily life, the Program places a high value on the creative process. We grant artists the gift of time, to refine ideas, engage in intellectual discourse, and progress in the achievement of their visions. We trust artists and the artistic process. We believe artists matter.
The Djerassi Program is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization that relies on contributions from individuals and philanthropic organizations for its operations. We welcome your support. Donate online at www.djerassi.org.

SAS is a art exhibition program supported by Stanford's Center for Integrated Systems, which recognized almost thirty years ago that the visual arts could play an important role in the broadly humanistic education of scientists and engineers.
During our three decades, SAS has shown hundreds of artists in our core venues of the Paul G. We are actively seeking to expand our program in order to serve Bay Area artists and the Stanford community. DeWitt Cheng, Curator dewittc@stanford.edu Facebook.com/ StanfordArt Spaces

Seeing Things 9 Visionary Bay Area Artists
art sv/sf
61
Robert Armstrong Pierre Merkl III
Mark Bryan David Avery
Michael Kerbow Chris Leib
Reiner Hansen Susan Danis Arthur Bell
The Bay Area is renowned for its individualism and creativity, qualities which these nine artists exemplify. Robert Armstrong, David Avery, Arthur Bell, Mark Bryan, Susan Danis, Reiner Hansen, Michael Kerbow, Chris Leib and Pierre Merkl III are virtuosic technicians in painting and assemblage; they are also imaginative, iconoclastic artists who engage in a dialogue with the art of the past in order to comment, with provocative humor, on our challenging present and uncertain future. Academic art in recent years has eschewed serious or even comprehensible engagement about real life. These visionary artists deal with the real by exploring the unreal, corroborating Picasso's paradoxical aphorism, "Art is a lie that tells the truth." DeWitt Cheng, Curator

Ignighting investment and engagement in arts and creativity in Silicon Valley
Silicon Valley Creates welcomes Art Silicon Valley/San Francisco into this innovative, participatory, diverse, and accessible Bay Area arts ecosystem. We believe that the arts play a unique and integral role in building community, creating a sense of place, and bringing joy and learning to our lives, and we see art fairs as opportunities to introduce and engage new audiences. We work to raise the visibility and value of the arts; increase participation; and grow investment in, and build the capacity of our arts and culture community. We applaud the Fair for their inclusion of and partnership with a number of Silicon Valley organizations, including Zero1, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, MACLA, Stanford Art Spaces, tmoro projects, Djerassi Foundation Resident Artists Program, and the San Jose Museum of Art.
