3 PREFACE BY HAROLD T’KINT DE ROODENBEKE, CHAIRMAN BRAFA
the heart of art beats in January Dear visitor, How to thank you for your loyalty ? In 2018 over 65,000 of you from all over Europe filled the fair with your enthusiasm. The 64th edition is promising to be exceptional with revamped decor tailored to house the increasingly international selection of galleries. About 133 of them will unveil their highest quality pieces in the magnificent, listed industrial halls of Tour & Taxis. Covering 5000 years of art history, from classical archaeology to contemporary art, they will present a vast range of stunning creations, sharing their discoveries with you. Whether you are a seasoned collector, a connoisseur or simply an art enthusiast, Brafa invites you to admire its rare treasures in a warm, welcoming se ing. For in an increasingly virtual world, Brafa continues to believe in a human approach and defines itself as a place for new encounters and shared passions. Brafa is proud to welcome the British artist duo Gilbert & George as guests of honour this year. Internationally renowned for their visionary and resolutely modern art, these two gentlemen are in the habit of pu ing themselves in the frame with an o en subversive twist. To celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Royal Chamber of Art Dealers of Belgium and to publicise and promote this fascinating line of work, a prestigious exhibition will also be put on in the heart of the fair. Our cycle of lectures – the Brafa Art Talks – have become a tradition, enabling visitors to extend their knowledge of art daily. What’s more, visiting the fair is the ideal moment to plan a longer stay in Brussels. The city has never been as lively, cosmopolitan and exciting, due to its growing artistic and cultural scenes. This season, head for the Inca Dress Code exhibition about Peru at the Art & History Museum ; take a trip to 1920s Berlin at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium ; experience the rebellion of the swinging sixties at the ING Art Centre or take a bet on red white and black at Magma, Cloud and Ashes on the 32nd floor of the Beflius tower – thrills guaranteed. A wide selection of concerts, operas, plays and culinary adventures complete the selection of activities presented in the guide we’ve specially prepared for you. We wish you a wonderful time at Brafa and a pleasant stay in our welcoming, vibrant capital, Brussels.

7 GUEST OF HONOUR
Gilbert & George Faithful to tradition and devoted to the promotion of art, Brafa has welcomed prestigious guests of honour over the years, including institutions, museums and foundations. This year, Brafa is delighted to welcome the renowned international art duo Gilbert & George. ‘Art for all’ is the belief that underpins Gilbert & George’s art. Their trademark format is the large grid, a square or rectangular picture broken into sections that becomes a unified field of signs and images. A selection of these spectacular, provocative, wi y pictures displayed throughout the fair will wake your senses and trigger your curiosity as you explore the alleyways. Globally famous and relentlessly controversial, Gilbert Prousch (San Martin de Tor, Italy, 1943) and George Passmore (Plymouth, United Kingdom, 1942) are two artists who live and work together. Gilbert & George first met in September, 1967 at St Martins School of Art while studying sculpture. From the beginning, in their films and ‘living sculpture’ they appeared as figures in their own work. The artists believe that everything is potential subject ma er for their work, and they have always addressed social issues, taboos and artistic conventions. Implicit in their work is the idea that an artist’s sacrifice and personal investment is a necessary condition of art. They have depicted themselves as naked figures in their own work, recasting the male nude as something vulnerable and fragile rather than as a potent figure of strength. The backdrop and inspiration for much of their work is the East End of London where Gilbert & George have lived and worked for over 40 years. From street signs to Ginkgo trees, from chewing gum stains on the pavements to vistas of urban grandeur and decay, their work is both an ongoing portrait of a city and a reflection on the human condition. Working in series, Gilbert & George have confronted many of the fundamental issues of existence : sex, religion, corruption, violence, hope, fear, racial tension, patriotism, addiction and death. Confrontational, shocking and poetic, their art has always a racted admiration from young and older generations, while capturing the passage of time in the most striking way. During the half century to date of their partnership, Gilbert & George have had major museum shows all over the world and been the recipients of honours, awards and prizes in many countries.

Royal Chamber of Art Dealers The association’s centennial anniversary will be marked by its adoption of a new name. Formerly called the ‘Belgian Royal Chamber of Antiques and Art Dealers’, it will from now on be known as ROCAD.be or the ‘Royal Chamber of Art Dealers’. ROCAD.be was established in 1919. Since its foundation, the Chamber has only welcomed
as members professional antiques dealers who are dedicated to integrity, honesty and ethical conduct in the antiques trade. ROCAD.be serves the art trade in Belgium by helping it to achieve a competitive position within the international art market. It is a founder-member of the CINOA , the ‘Confédération Internationale des Négociants en Oeuvres d’Art’. The CINOA is an international association with about 20 country-members including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United-States, Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden and South Africa. Currently, the professional association has about 110 members. This year, ROCAD.be has been invited to exhibit at BRAFA to celebrate its 100th jubilee. During this 64th edition of BRAFA , ROCAD.be is displaying more than thirty iconic masterpieces in a specially designed space. Here, visitors will have the unique opportunity to discover collections of old masters, modern paintings, decorative art, tribal art, porcelain, silver and antiquities. All are rarely-shown masterpieces which have previously been sold by members of the professional association to collectors or museums, or which come from the art dealers’ private collections. The exhibition reflects the prestigious character of ROCAD.be. The association will organise a round-table discussion to familiarise the public with its various activities. To commemorate its jubilee, ROCAD.be has also published a magnificent book shedding light on over 100 art works and their stories. Important art treasures from the member’s collections were selected to figure in this publication by the journalist Thijs Demeulemeester.

At the time of the Incas textiles were considered an extremely precious commodity : they were not only used for clothing, they were also symbols of power and identity and could be used as offerings or as a currency of exchange. INCA Dress Code enables you to admire the magnificence of these textiles,
the quality of the precious metalwork on them and the beauty of pre-Columbian feather work. Around 200 objects from the Art & History Museum, as well as the Linden-Museum in Stu gart, the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, the MAS in Antwerp and several private collections will be exhibited to illustrate this newly-presented theme. It is home to a large number of institutions dedicated to a huge range of artistic disciplines. The missing pieces in this magnificient jigsaw are a museum of modern and contemporary art and a museum of architecture. This is why the project K ANAL - Centre Pompidou was created. It is situated in the 35.000 m2 of the former Citroën garage at Yser square. Before the start of the huge building transformations, and the final opening in 2022/2023, the Kanal Foundation has decided to launch, on May 5th 2018, a year of cultural prefiguration. During 13 months, in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou, the public will be able to discover this mythical building through different exhibitions, huge installations, 10 original artworks of artists of Brussels and live performances. 01.02.2019 > 28.04.2019 Ellen Gallagher, one of the most prominent contemporary painters, explores African-American history and culture using a charged poetic vocabulary that she deploys through diverse media such as painting, film and installation. She has developed a mythical world inspired by the tragic history of the Middle Passage, the slave route across the Atlantic that witnessed the drowning of thousands of Africans over several centuries. In recent work, made for New Orleans, a city still recovering from the hurricane that flooded it and drove away large parts of its population,
she explores how 20th century urban planning was devised not only to maintain racial boundaries but to further subjugate black communities. The exhibition at WIELS will present works by the artist and the film installation ‘Highway Gothic’ she created with the Dutch artist Edgar Cleijne. BENOÎT PL ATÉUS

The exhibition aims to provide an insight into this process, which is defined by the artist’s questioning and undermining of paint as a medium. 15.12.2018 > 12.05.2019 In 2016, the contemporary artist Berlinde De Bruyckere (Ghent, 1964) was first introduced to the enchanting ‘Enclosed Gardens’ sixteenthcentury reliquary altarpieces. The hundreds of delicately fashioned flowers in different stages of growth and decay, reminded her of the spent lilies she had photographed at home, meticulously documenting their gradual decline. In this exhibition, De Bruyckere confronts her series with the sixteenth-century ‘Enclosed Gardens’. The lilies in De Bruyckere’s series exude tenderness and roughness because of their texture. The series of textile, iron and wax sculptures are framed with eighteenth-century oak floor boards from the artist’s home. All the elements in De Bruyckere’s cabinets are infused with a special meaning. Some of the works in this series were also exhibited at the Biennale di Venezia, Art Basel, Manifesta and the Sara Hildén Art Museum (Finland). They are supplemented by new works created especially for this exhibition.
