Brafa 2015 call it Miss Sixty ! BRAFA will soon be celebrating its sixtieth edition, and although the fair

can depend on its maturity, it prides itself on staying young, and we welcome each year with the wisdom of age and the excitement of youth : the world changes, and the fair too. Picasso said that ‘computers are useless because they can only give you an answer’. As an artist, he gave us far more : vision, pleasure, and intellectual stimulation. And that is what art is about. So art is what we would like to offer you in 2015 : the BRAFA, faithful to its standards, but renewed once again : a reflection of the art world as it is today. This year, the fair will be more international, the quality of the exhibitors higher than ever, but the warm Belgian welcome will remain as enticing as it has always been. Our goal too, is unchanged : to offer you endless discoveries on a voyage through the ages. Belgium has often been called the land of collectors, and the King Baudouin Foundation will demonstrate the grounds for this reputation with a magnificent exhibition ‘The Belgian Collector’s Eye and Taste’. Here, we will be able to discover all the idiosyncrasies of the Belgian collector, through a selection of diverse masterpieces held in private collections. So what is a collector, really? The term immediately evokes obsession: a person obsessed by the ultimate treasure; a vision of the most perfect and as yet undiscovered object. But a collector is at first someone with an extraordinary sensibility and an all-consuming passion for the unique. We all have a grain of this passion and love of beauty in us, and the BRAFA is an invitation to let the seed grow. We look forward to welcoming you in January 2015.

‘The Belgian Collector’ by the King Baudouin Foundation On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of BRAFA, the organizers have chosen to honour ‘The Belgian Collector’. Breaking with its tradition of inviting a museum or cultural institution, BRAFA pays homage to the Belgian collectors whose collaboration it has valued greatly over the past six decades. BRAFA asked the King Baudouin Foundation to select and present a number of private collections that demonstrate the quality and diversity of private collections in Belgium. Visitors to the fair will thus have the opportunity to discover old and modern paintings, silverwork, tribal art, pieces of decorative art and old drawings; all are important works that have never, or only rarely, been exhibited. They can be described as the ambassadors of the ten or so collections showcased at the Fair, each of which has been assembled not only with great passion by the collector, but also with a love for our heritage. The Foundation has selected collections whose owners expressed a particular desire for them to be left in total or partial perpetuity, in museums or elsewhere, in Belgium or abroad. The Belgian collector has always cared about our heritage. Indeed, from the 19th century, collectors were key players in conserving and handing down our heritage, with many public collections born out of a private donation. Public bodies carried on the tradition, though mainly with an educational role in mind. From this point in time, the development of two types of collections could therefore be observed: one public, with more of a methodical research objective, and the second private, reflecting the life and personality of the collector. These days, we can observe a certain rapprochement between these two types of collection as public collections turn increasingly to the private collector, sometimes temporarily, sometimes definitively, with a view to completing the story they wish to tell. BRAFA and the King Baudouin Foundation would like to express their grateful thanks

to the collectors who have agreed to participate in this project. Belgium is often described as a country of collectors and it is hoped that the presentation created by the King Baudouin Foundation at BRAFA will offer visitors to the fair a moment of special pleasure and perhaps also the inspiration to start their own collection.

From 25 October 2014 the museum is exhibiting forty-two unique Renaissance drawings from private collections in Antwerp for the very first time. In the 16th century artists were held in particularly high regard : they ran flourishing workshops, travelled around Europe and received local and foreign commissions. Their work also consisted of drawing, a genre that developed into a separate art form. This exhibition highlights the various functions drawings can have : as sources of inspiration for subsequent work, studies for paintings or simply as art works in their own right. Drawings quickly became sought after collector’s items. The extraordinary talent of artists such as Frans Floris, Hans Bol and Jan Bruegel was soon noticed by Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901) as well as by contemporary collectors in Antwerp, who on one occasion clubbed together to show their Renaissance drawings to the public. The exhibition was developed in collaboration with the University of Ghent and enables students of Art History to examine the drawings with specialists.

Panamarenko Universum heralds Panamarenko’s return to his hometown, Antwerp. Almost ten years after the retrospective at the KMSK in Brussels, M HKA is devoting a unique retrospective to this exceptional artist. Panamarenko’s work relates directly to the M HKA’s focus, for it takes the 1960s avant-garde as its point of departure : a time when local was synonymous with open and international. The M HKA’s devotion to Panamarenko is expressed in the museum’s most ambitious project of the past decade : the renovation and refurbishment of his studio on Biekorfstraat, and the exhibition Panamarenko Universum shows this museum’s sustained commitment to a key artist from Antwerp. The challenge of making the Biekorfstraat into a public monument lay in the complexity of the peripheral material surrounding the project. With Panamarenko Universum however, M HKA is focusing on the core of the artist’s work. As with so many Flemish artists, the art scene has devoted little energy to creating a meaningful context around Panamarenko’s oeuvre. He was mainly seen as a ‘strange fellow’ who made magical sculptures. The retrospective Panamarenko Universum does not aim to simply reunite as many works as possible – the M HKA houses more than it can ever show – it aims to explore the works and the context that constitute the foundation of Panamarenko’s oeuvre. For the first time, it is therefore presenting a thematic and chronological overview of the multitude of vehicles and devices Panamarenko created between 1965 and 2005, aiming to create a clear and comprehensive picture of

Panamarenko’s impressive oeuvre. The M HKA will present this overview as a journey of discovery through a mental universe, with focus on the artistic process. The British artist Ellen Harvey (°1967) lives and works in New York. Her work includes video art, installations and paintings. She has exhibited throughout the world, from Warsaw to Berlin, Los Angeles to Prague. Between 1999 and 2001 she brightened up the streets of New York with her ‘NY Beautification Project’ : forty small tondos and oval landscape scenes were interspersed with graffiti around the city, whether on containers, garage doors, walls etc. For her Groeninge project she responded to the specific characteristics of the space, in this case the mobile iron hanging racks of the public archives.

Orange Dreams uncovers the most playful and original aspects of plastic design. Based on the essential collection of the Plasticarium, the exhibition invites the visitor to (re) discover this symbolic material of the Golden Sixties. From an everyday object to a piece of art, the exhibition embraces unexpected forms in a remarkable creative show designed for the Atomium. With its desire to include functional objects, works of art and projects, the exhibition offers an intimate glimpse of the life of an era, exploring its creative climate and its relation to history. With this concentration of objects in plastic and a focus on the colour orange, the Atomium offers a focused vision of the near past. Never before have so many objects made of this material from the same creative context been brought together, and the exhibition is quite exceptional as a result. The utopia of plastic from 1960 to 1973 is explored through a series of six installations : Nomadic dream, MOD ’s dream, Living dream, Space music dream, Kitchen dream and Office Dream.

September 1940 in the Dordogne, France. Four boys penetrated into the hillside cavity to which they had found an entrance. To their amazement, they discovered an extensive cave with decorated walls. It rapidly became apparent that they had made one of the most fascinating archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century. It wasn’t long before a stream of visitors began to appear, their number soon running into hundreds of thousands. The cave contains both paintings and incised drawings. These are about 20 000 years old and make the cave one of the world’s most important sites of rock art. Approximately 2000 animals are represented, including aurochs, deer, horses and bison. There is also an enigmatic depiction of a human being. In order to protect the cave and particularly the rock art for future generations, the site was closed to the public in 1963. Fortunately, full-scale copies of these works of art have been made at regular intervals, thereby enabling the public to continue to enjoy their beauty. The most recent series of reproductions are being displayed in the Cinquantenaire Museum in Brussels from 14 November 2014. Lascaux is an exhibition directed chiefly towards families and in 2013 was chosen as ‘Touring Exhibition of the Year’, enjoying enormous success in the United States and Canada. Full-scale, scientifically accurate reproductions and cutting-edge visual technologies give the visitor the impression of actually being in the cave itself. The exhibition also explores the cultural context within which this art originated, showing how its creators lived, hunted, ate and clothed themselves. Serving to frame the whole are complete animal skeletons and bone fragments, a realistic portrayal of a baby mammoth, and contemporary implements and jewellery, drawn from the Museum of Natural Sciences and the Cinquantenaire Museum.

Between the Sacred Isle (‘Ilot Sacré’) and the European quarter, to the north of the canal and south of the River Woluwe, live the people of Brussels. To commemorate both the twenty-five years of the Brussels-Capital region and its own twenty-fifth anniversary, the Belgian Comic Strip Centre has set out to capture the image of Brussels as seen in the comic strips of the last twenty-five years (19892014). The comic strip artists included in the show include permanent residents of the city and visitors, traditional and contemporary authors, famous names and students completing their studies in the art of the comic strip, and the exhibition brings out how the image of Brussels has constantly evolved in their work, and how the comic strip remains a joyous melting-pot of cultures and influences. The CBBD’s twenty-fifth anniversary will be an event to remember!

Due to the renovation of the museum building, the regular collection of the Antwerp Royal Museum of Fine Arts can no longer be visited on site. Many of the artworks will be moved to other locations. The MAS (the Museum by the River), the Rockox House and Gaasbeek Castle will welcome a few paintings from this world-renowned collection. Our selection emphasises the nineteenth century, with historical pieces, still life paintings and so on, by artists such as Alfred Stevens Henri Leys, Henri De Braekeleer, Victor Lagye, Jan Stobbaerts and Gustave De Jonghe. The showpiece is the Fallen Caryatid by Auguste Rodin, a bronze female figure carrying a heavy stone. The works are exhibited in the Fruit Salon, which has been decorated as a 19th century salon for the occasion.

Like a raindrop falling in a puddle, the life of Felix De Boeck created a widespread ripple effect. The development of his artistic work runs parallel with events that gave his long and fascinating life its rhythm. Starting with traditional still lives, he experimented with fauvism and futurism before turning to abstract art. Self-taught, he found his place in a group of young ‘revolutionaries’, who were pleading for a new society through a radical new form of art. De Boeck managed to combine his avant-garde beliefs with agricultural life in Drogenbos, and his parents’ farmhouse even became a regular meeting place for discussions with numerous artists, writers, poets, and philosophers. Furthermore, even when De Boeck distanced himself from the art scene for family reasons, he continued to broaden his horizons, fascinated throughout his life by literature and philosophical thought. The exhibition presents a selected range of paintings and drawings, enriched with archival material of all sorts.

Who was Victor Hugo? The most influential French Romantic writer of the 19th century, not to mention a gifted thinker and statesman. But he was also a spiritual person, a talented illustrator and an architecture enthusiast, and his love life was tumultuous to say the least. From the Grand Place in Brussels to Hauteville House on the Channel Island of Guernsey, the exhibition Victor Hugo in Exile shows the censored writer’s true colours. Drawings of maritime landscapes, poems, famous publications such as Les Misérables and his extensive correspondence testify how relationships, political ideas and loneliness influenced the work of this great writer.

Obsession. To be fascinated by a person, object or idea. To be dominated by demanding and sometimes uncontrollable, disturbing thoughts. An obsession is intrusive, and can lead to ritual and compulsive gestures. Collecting often means developing an incurable habit. On the other hand, the act of creation itself frequently threatens to overpower the artist if not kept in check. Obsession, the thirteenth art exhibition held at the Maison Particulière, will definitely not be subdued, and its main focus is the ‘folie raisonnante’ with which artists and collectors live. While choosing works from his sculptural and pictorial oeuvre for us, Gérard Garouste also imagined his ideal collection, including pieces by diverse artists from Marcel Broodthaers to Thierry de Cordier, to mention just the Belgian artists. His selection gives us an idea of his particular sensibility, and a glimpse into his mind. The collectors invited alongside Gérard Garouste have their own obsessions and they have delved into their collections for artworks that reflect them or that manifest recurring characteristics of certain artists’ work that could be seen to demonstrate a certain kind of mania. Two literary guests are taking part in this exhibition : François de Coninck, a brilliant and sensitive writer, and François Rachline, because his erudition and friendship with Gérard Garouste are essential if we are to unravel the mystery that surrounds this artist’s work. In honour of the publication of the collected writings of Jean Dypréau, a selection from the modern art collection is on display in the Patio. The focus is on works by artists who had particular significance for Dypréau. From 1952 until the end of his life, Jean Dypréau (Brussels, 1917-1986) was a committed critical voice in the art world, especially in Brussels. He wrote critiques in art magazines such as Temps Mêlés, Quadrum, Phantomas, XXe Siècle, the Journal des Beaux-Arts and Plus, introductions to exhibitions held in galleries and art centres such as Galerie Aujourd’hui, Galerie Ad Libitum, Le Zodiaque and the Palace of Fine arts, not to mention others at home and abroad, and essays for cultural publications and museums. His interest lay in informal art, abstract art, and pop art. It will be no surprise that all the artists Dypréau wrote about are present in the collections of the Royal Museums. In addition to the selection from the modern art collection, eight paintings displayed in the exhibition of 1959 are on show.

To commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the First World War, the Royal Museum of the Army and of Military History in Brussels organised the major exhibition 14-18, It’s Our History! which opened on the 26 February, 2014. Based on the rich and unique collections of the Royal Museum of the Army and of Military History, this exhibition allows the public to discover all aspects of the conflict that left Europe a shadow of its former self. Here, the history of the conflict is placed in a broader context, offering a comprehensive view of all aspects of this world-changing event. Everyday life during the occupation of Belgium constitutes an important part of the exhibition, and authentic objects, first-person accounts, multimedia documentation, films and immersive spaces show how and why this conflict influenced the history of the 20th century so profoundly. Particular attention is given to the contradictory wartime destinies of two cousins who came into conflict : the Belgian King Albert I and the German Emperor Wilhelm II. Personal uniforms, letters and pictures combine to create wonderfully detailed pictures of both rulers.

‘During the 1960s, there was a change in women’s attitudes, based on an intense exercise of inner and outer freedom. Garry Winogrand’s photographic lens caught this social transformation better than any other, and his unique, unprecedented photographs document a whole decade, immortalizing this period of change. The so-called ‘prince of the streets’ earned his title by capturing women’s attitudes in daily public life. Winogrand was fascinated by life and change, the subjects he chose and the images he developed. His women are selfconfident, happy, free from complexes; women who go their own way and whose freedom makes them even more desirable. He caught the moment when women rebelled against the dictatorship of ‘what others might say’. Autumn 2012 saw work begin on the restoration of the ‘Lamb of God’ altarpiece by the Brussels-based Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage. The work is being carried out at the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent over a period of five years. The ‘Lamb of God’ is probably the best-known masterpiece of the Flemish Primitives. It was painted by Jan van Eyck and his older brother, Hubert, and completed in 1432. The work was commissioned by Joos Vijdt, a senior alderman of the city of Ghent. To commemorate this unique restoration, an important exhibition is being staged. As the public will not be able to view the complete ‘Lamb of God’ masterpiece in its usual surroundings for a while, this exhibition enables visitors to learn more than ever about this work of art during this exceptional period of its life. The exhibition is made up of three sections : ‘The ‘Lamb of God’ revealed! History and research’, ‘What does the Ghent Altarpiece tell us?’ and ‘Monitoring the restoration of the Lamb of God’.

At the Museum of Fine Arts you can see the restorers at work behind glass and at the Carmelites Convent all sorts of details about the restoration are on show. Lightopia is an exhibition developed by the Vitra Design Museum in collaboration with EDP Fundaçào. Jolanthe Kugler, curator of the exhibition, describes the event as follows : ‘Lightopia not only examines aspects of light today such as light art and lighting design, it is the first exhibition that also considers the many different facets of designing with light and that connects directly with contemporary issues’. Over the past century, electric light has revolutionised our environment like no other medium. It has transformed our cities, created new lifestyles and working conditions, and has become a catalyst of progress for industry, medicine and communication. Currently, new lighting technologies are bringing about profound changes in the domain of artificial lighting. These developments are the subject of the Vitra Design Museum’s exhibition Lightopia. This is the first comprehensive presentation of lighting design, and it features examples from the domains of art, design, architecture and many other disciplines.

Love can be expressed in many different ways. In letters, of course, but also in the visual arts, whether on paper or canvas, photography or film. Love Letters follows the visual traces of famous and lesser-known romances, delving into prudish Victorian society and elusive ‘fin-de-siècle’ desire, before moving on to the insanity of the war years and the liberated yet defeatist Twenties. This exhibition gives us the chance to explore what Guillaume Apollinaire, Arthur Rimbaud, Camille Claudel, Hannah Höch, F.T. Marinetti and Pablo Picasso had to say on the subject of love. And because love is an everyday occurrence, everyday stories also deserve a platform. Increased literacy and the development of the mail system meant the art of correspondence experienced unprecedented growth during the First World War (1914-1918). Wartime love letters are often by unknown authors, but they are nonetheless hugely poignant – handwritten messages to loved ones in remote destinations written on and behind the frontlines, that helped those on either side briefly forget about the horrors of war. The museum is simultaneously exhibiting a project created by Mona Hatoum, an artist of Palestinian origin, in whose work the concepts of love and war are always present in one way or another.

In September 2011 the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (KMSKA ) closed in order to carry out substantial renovation work. Until it reopens, the Antwerp museum is lending sixteen masterpieces from its regular collection to the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent. In the context of the ‘collection mobility’ project run by the Flemish art collection VKC (the cooperative association of arthistorical museums of Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent) the Groeningemuseum in Bruges will transfer a number of 15th and 16th century masterpieces from the KMSKA to its permanent collection. The Ghent Museum of Fine Arts (MSK ) opted for art works from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The institutions have sought to engage in a reciprocal circulation of works from the permanent collection. The selection covers nearly a century of fine art, from Henri Leys and Henri De Braekeleer to George Grosz and Ossip Zadkine.

S.M.A.K. is holding the first mid-career retrospective of

Berlinde De Bruyckere’s work, showing pieces dating from 2000 until today. This is a significant event in Belgium, following on the heels of recent exhibitions that have shown large pieces by this artist, held at the Middelheim Museum (1996), the Provincial Cultural Centre Caermersklooster (Ghent, 2002) and the M HKA (Museum of Modern Art, Antwerp, 2011). Berlinde De Bruyckere has also exhibited her work at some of the most famous international museums and institutions. Here, early sculptures in cloth from the 1990s are on show alongside her later work with horse skins that brought her international acclaim. These are presented with the wax sculptures that, in recent years, have slowly transmuted from human to vegetable form. The most representative sculpture in this series, ‘Kreupelhout – Cripplewood’ – the imposing installation Berlinde De Bruyckere created in 2012-2013 for the Pavilion of Belgium at La Biennale di Venezia – has been entirely reconstructed for the occasion.

Markus Schinwald (° 1973, Salzburg) divides his time between Vienna and Los Angeles, between Freud and Lynch, Prater and Mulholland Drive, Biedermeier and the Black Sun. In his expressive oeuvre, he alternates extremes, and in doing so is not committed to any particular medium. The human body is the central focus of his paintings, sculptures, films and performances : how it relates to space, and how it is embedded in a cultural and psychological context. Through alienation, fragmentation and close attention to staging, Schinwald manipulates the familiar and the everyday, allowing us to experience new layers of meaning in reality. People become puppets, sculptures adopt human characteristics and portraits are given prosthetics. His work is a visual interpretation of the limitations, possibilities and adaptability of the human body. Within the context of the Latvian presidency of the European Union, the National Museum of Riga is showing selected pieces from its collection, including a number of artworks gathered by a Belgian diplomat working in Riga at the beginning of the 20th century, and offered to the Latvian state in 1932. In order to illustrate the influence of Belgian art on Latvian art, the show also includes works by Belgian artists from the same period. The exhibition is presented in the Musée Ianchelevici in La Louvière and in BAL in Liège.

Art and history are combined in an exhibition presented in Liège dedicated to works that were sold by the Germans at the Lucerne auction in 1939. On the eve of the Second World War, the Nazi authorities decided to dispose of the modern art works on display in German art galleries that they considered ‘degenerate’. In June 1939, they therefore organised a grand auction in Lucerne. This auction, which was to take on a historic dimension, offered works by some of the greatest artists of the period : Gauguin, Chagall, Matisse, Kokoschka and even Picasso… The Belgian government was represented at the auction, as was a delegation from Liège that had managed to raise quite a large sum. Belgium acquired several works of art for the museums of Antwerp and Brussels while Liège purchased nine exceptional paintings that today form part of the city’s major collections. Now scattered around the world in prestigious private and public collections, a large number of the works from the auction are being brought together for the first time and exclusively presented at the Cité Miroir in Liège. The exhibition is enriched by numerous documents evoking the historical context of the auction. The Cité Miroir, a building with exceptional architectural style, is a new multipurpose cultural venue in the very heart of Liège. It was built in 1939 and has just been fully renovated. This complex housed the Sauvenière public baths and swimming pool. It is now devoted to public and cultural projects. Within the framework of ‘Entarte Kunst, according to Hitler’, the venue is also hosting varied events, including film screenings, conferences and other events related to the exhibition.

During his stay of almost two years (1878-1880) in the Borinage area and in Mons, Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) ended his career as a pastor and chose the life of an artist. In Belgium, he rapidly developed a preference for painting the daily life of peasants and workers. This exhibition brings together almost seventy paintings and drawings from different international collections as well as original letters written by Van Gogh in the Borinage and in Brussels that have rarely been seen by the public.

Curators : Jan Hoet & Phillip van den Bossche. The sea has always been a great source of inspiration for the arts. Its attraction can undoubtedly be ascribed to its ever-changing nature. Its infinite beauty can soothe, but its unpredictability is laced with threat. The endless play of light, space and movement seascapes offer is of endless fascination to artists. The Sea is an exhibition that is as elusive as a wave, ebbing, flowing and leaving traces that are absorbed by the next. It is a show that is in dialogue with Ostend itself, and is spread over several locations, with Mu.ZEE as the starting point of its voyage of discovery. Jan Hoet was closely involved in the planning of this event. This was to be his last major exhibition, but sadly, on 27 February 2014, we had to bid our curator farewell. He had focused on this project until the very last weeks of his life. The exhibition therefore grew from a tribute to the sea into a homage to Jan Hoet, a man of boundless generosity and imagination. The exhibition brings together artists from different periods, enabling contemporary artists to engage in dialogue with older Masters. The Sea therefore combines works of art by (inter alia) Etel Adnan, Forrest Bess, Marcel Broodthaers, Marc Chagall, Gustave Courbet, Hanne Darboven, Marlene Dumas, James Ensor, Jan Fabre, Hans-Peter Feldmann, Bernd Lohaus, Henri Matisse, Dennis Oppenheim, Panamarenko, Constant Permeke, Roger Raveel, Rob Scholte, Luc Tuymans, Paul Thek and Katharina Wulff, and new work by artists such as Guillaume Bijl, Michaël Borremans, Thierry De Cordier, Joseph Kosuth, Kris Martin, Reinhard Mucha, Pascale Marthine Tayou and Lawrence Weiner.

A new exhibition dedicated to the eye-opening photographic work of Patrice Niset is being held in the elegant setting of an 18th century castle, host to the Museum of Silverwork of the Wallonia-Brussels French Community. Niset’s work documents his encounters with men and women who have mastered skills that have been honed over centuries but that continue to develop today. The photographer explores the bond between materials such as wood, silver, clay, leather, glass, metal, cloth, gold, stone and paper, and individual designers. The design of the exhibition reflects his work by taking books devoted to art-objects as its model. This project marks the twentieth anniversary of the museum (1995-2015). The exhibition will also appeal to heritage professionals interested in the conservation and restoration of ancient buildings and their interiors.
