FOREWORD
We are pleased to offer you the first edition of MasterArt’s Directory of the World’s Leading Art and Antique Dealers, an overview of 130 high-end galleries known for their sound expertise and rigorous professionalism in the art trade. The idea of publishing a directory came to us in late 2011, when several collectors confided that they would appreciate having a print publication listing galleries by city and art category—a handy reference to locate dealers or check on fair dates, a personal item to be annotated or taken along simply for one’s reading pleasure. Our aim therefore was to create a compact handbook that would complement our internet portal, MasterArt.com, and help collectors become better acquainted with the dealers who are members of the MasterArt network. All of the dealers featured are professionals whose collections have been thoroughly vetted by specialist committees at the major international art fairs. Needless to say, the list of galleries included in the MasterArt Directory—our first written publication—is hardly exhaustive and next year’s edition will feature those who are missing. Gallery entries are listed alphabetically by country, then city and gallery name. Each entry offers the gallery’s details, speciality and a short description of the collection. Some galleries have included “collection links” (QR codes) which take the reader directly to their artworks exhibited on the MasterArt portal. The Directory also offers portraits of thirteen world-acclaimed interior designers. We think that you will enjoy reading about their effervescent passion for design and discovering the more playful aspects of their personalities. Finally, the Directory lists by date all the major upcoming exhibitions and art and antiques fairs. Our acknowledgements go to the MasterArt Advisory Committee, the fairs and partners, and particularly the MasterArt team, who embraced the project with unbounded enthusiasm. We also wish to thank the many art lovers who continue to rely on MasterArt.com to acquire works of truly exceptional beauty and authenticity.

After receiving a PhD. in Art History from Yale University in 1987, Bernard de Grunne was the head of both the Tribal and American Indian Art departments at Sotheby's Worldwide, from 1987 to 1992. He opened his gallery in Brussels in 1995 and has specialized in Tribal Fine Arts from Sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania and Tribal Indonesia since. He is the author of many articles on the art of the Dogon and the Inland Niger Delta terracotta statuary and the arts of the Congo basin such as the Tabwa and the Lega. He has curated the world-acclaimed Masterhands Exhibition in Brussels in 2001 and the first exhibition of Nok statuary from Nigeria.

Depicted as a lion devouring an Asian prisoner, the Pharaoh provides magical protection from Egypt’s traditional enemies. The best parallel is the famous Ramesside lion’s head swallowing the head of a Nubian, from the Norbert Schimmel Collection, kept in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (1989.281.92).

Louis-Félix Delarue (1730-1770) a student of LambertSigisbert Adam, won the First Prize of Sculpture in 1750. He pursued his training at the École Royale des Elèves Protégés, before joining the Academie de France in Rome in 1754. After his return to Paris, he became professor and took part in its exhibitions in 1762 and 1764. Delarue essentially produced drawings and small marble and terra cotta sculptures, intended for the cabinets of the greatest collectors of his time, such as Mariette or La Live de Jully.

Helena Markus has been the forerunner of the passion for Japanese art and culture in Italy. Michael Goedhuis has been committed for thirty years to dealing in the finest works of Asian art with a particular emphasis in the last two decades of later Chinese bronzes (11th to 18th century). Johnny Van Haeften, of Dutch ancestry, was born in 1952 in London and educated in England, at Eton. In 1977 he left Christie's and set up Johnny Van Haeften Ltd with his wife Sarah whom he married the same year. In 1982 he moved to the present gallery at 13 Duke Street, St James's, specialising exclusively in Dutch and Flemish Old Master Paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries. What best characterizes the interiors of Pierre Yovanovitch is the ingenuity with which he embraces the present without yielding to the dictates of passing fashions. Yovanovitch first launched his career designing collections for Pierre Cardin—an experience that significantly developed his taste for geometrical designs, materials and detail. In 2001, he succumbed to his passion for interior design and opened his own design firm. His many commissions include the the house of Mrs. Joseph Losey in Montparnasse, and the villa of Tiffany’s design director, John Loring, in Palm Beach, to name but two. When Patricia Kaas fell in love with his apartment in the rue du Faubourg St Honoré, he designed an apartment for himself overlooking the Place de la Concorde—a signature piece acclaimed the world over. His projects all show his strong predilection for architectural lines that are both pure and radical. The sobriety of his decors is softened by the warmth and mingling of the materials employed. An esthetic coherence flowing between the inside and the outside of the building is ever present in his work, as is the presence of natural light.

Juan Pablo Molyneux is a committed classicist who creates spirited interiors that are rooted in history without being historical recreations. Bold, eclectic and witty, his work is unmistakably his own. Born in Chile and now an American citizen, Molyneux heads the international design firm of J.P.Molyneux Studio Ltd. in New York City and its satellite company in Paris. The many prestigious projects that bear his name include the design of the Pavilion of Treaties at the Kostantinovsky Palace in St. Petersburg and the Hotel Claude Passart in Paris. He has also designed the interiors of a Boeing 737, private jets and a number of suites aboard the ocean liner World of Residensea. His residential projects span several countries and continents, from South America, the United States, Europe and the Middle East. His work has been extensively published in eminent design magazines such as Architectural Digest, and has been featured in a number of books on interiors, including a 1997 monograph on his work. Juan Pablo Molyneux brings to each project a wide-ranging curiosity about all things aesthetic. “I try to distill that which is expected and turn it into something unexpected,” he says.

Jacques Grange, president of his Paris-based design firm, studied at the Ecole Boulle et Camondo a Paris. He began his career at the age of 20, working with French decorator Henri Samuel, as well as with Alain Demachy and Didier Aaron, before establishing his own firm in 1970. A few of the notable commissions Mr. Grange has received during the past two decades include the Salle Christian Berard of the Theatre de l'Athenee, the New York showroom for Paloma Picasso Accessories, and numerous exhibition and residential commissions for Yves Saint Laurent. Mr. Grange has also been honored by the Minister of French Culture with the designation of Chevalier of Arts

Borrowing from various cultural influences from his earliest childhood, Alberto Pinto, an inescapable actor of interior design, has built his works on the interbreeding and mixture of genders from more than baroque to less than bare. Originally trained as an architect, Philip Hooper was senior designer for John Stefanidis, later working on his own. In 2001, he joined Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, internationally renowned London decoration firm, as one of five design directors. Philip’s work reflects his outstanding historical knowledge of architecture. His interiors can vary from those requiring the sensitivity of a painstaking restoration to those meeting the demands of contemporary living, yet without losing sight of his acutely observing eye for detail and modern craftsmanship. Recent commissions include private houses in Chelsea, a Regency Estate in Southern England, a villa in Phuket and chalet in Verbier. Work in progress features a Scottish estate, properties in the Middle East, restoration of an historic listed house in Hampstead, and origination of the new Richard Green gallery in New Bond Street. His interiors reflect his strong interest in contemporary and modern art. Philip is a regular contributor to journals and books, and his graphic skills are evidenced in the V&A archives where his perspective sketches are preserved as significant examples of 20th century decoration

John Stefanidis is a world renowned and much sought after interior designer with a prestigious, international clientele.
