FROM THE CEO
GOTTA LOVE THE ARTS • OUR ORGANIZATION
Dear Friends of ArtsWestchester:
4
ArtsWestchester CEO Janet T. Langsam (photo credit: Leslye Smith)
2018 marked 20 years of occupancy in our historic downtown White Plains building… 20 years of loving care, restoring and transforming the former People’s National Bank & Trust building into what has become a cultural hub of arts activity by artists and creative businesses. In honor of our “building birthday,” we installed new signage on the exterior of the building and commissioned a public art street mural. Bringing this art to the street was our way of taking all of the creativity that happens inside the building out in front, as a kind of vibrant welcome mat for the community. We expanded our Teen Tuesdays programming, (adding Thursdays), which offers free hands-on arts workshops for teens in transition. The ArtsWestchester Triennial got off the ground, the first of a once-every-three-years art happening that features outstanding works by artists in the Hudson Valley region. More than 90 artists were nominated. A milestone year for ArtsWestchester, 2018 was all about bringing the arts to the community and celebrating the diversity among our arts organizations. In 2018, ArtsWestchester’s vision to launch an ArtsMobile became a reality with the vital support of White Plains Hospital and Con Edison. Next year, there’s more to come. Thanks to all… we couldn’t have done it without your support.

2018 ArtsWestchester Annual Report
When it comes to the arts, what is your passion? What makes you smile? What inspires you? No matter what your answer – be it sculpture, dance, jazz, visual arts or any other form of art – you can find it in Westchester County, thanks in large part to the hard work of ArtsWestchester. We know that the arts touch the lives of so many residents and visitors of Westchester, yet still many of our initiatives are intended to dramatically increase our reach. At the end of 2018, plans were well underway to (literally) roll out our brand new ArtsMobile, to bring the arts directly to the people. We were also in the process of expanding our after-school arts education programs. And these are just two of our many initiatives. Our Board is working hard, and reaching deeply into our networks, to strengthen the whole ArtsWestchester organization. I am proud to lead a diverse, creative and proactive group of individuals who take great pride in the organization and the incredible growth that we continue to foster in our community. It was a great 2018, and I look forward to reporting even bigger, bolder, brighter, better accomplishments for 2019!

“If I could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.” – Edward Hopper
2018 marked twenty years of ArtsWestchester owning and operating its nine-story home at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue in downtown White Plains. It marked the anniversary of the ambitious decision by ArtsWestchester’s Board of Directors to purchase what was a vacant bank building. Their vision was to transform the unique building into a cultural destination that is filled with creative energy, including arts programs for residents and visitors to Westchester County. Since ArtsWestchester acquired 31 Mamaroneck Avenue in 1998, it has been hard at work restoring and creatively adapting this cultural treasure into an arts incubator. Originally owned by People’s National Bank and Trust Co, the landmark building
is now a multi-use arts center. With a goal of creating a supportive environment that would encourage artistic collaboration, ArtsWestchester undertook a labor of love to renovate studio, office and gallery spaces in its downtown headquarters. Today, ArtsWestchester is home to artists, artisans, architects, designers, curators, arts administrators and other creative businesses. It also provides County residents and visitors with easy access to a wide range of cultural programs, including exhibitions, concerts, family art workshops and performances.

“Creativity takes courage.” – Henri Matisse
ArtsWestchester provided more than 30 group tours in conjunction with these two exhibitions. It also presented numerous public programs that engaged audiences of all ages, including a free handson brickmaking workshop, a brick swapping event, and the “Untold Story of Haverstraw’s African American Community,” a story told through storytelling and song. ArtsWestchester unveiled a vibrant street mural by artist Wane One, which was marked by a ribbon-cutting with White Plains Mayor Tom Roach and the artist, to commemorate ArtsWestchester’s 20th year in its historic building. The public art installation, entitled “Brighter Colors Better Life,” now serves

as a colorful welcome mat that invites residents and visitors into ArtsWestchester’s gallery and building.
2018 ArtsWestchester Annual Report
ArtsWestchester mounted two major exhibitions in its Peckham and Shenkman Galleries in 2018. The inaugural ArtsWestchester Triennial showcased the vanguard of our region’s arts community by offering a snapshot of “what’s now and what’s new” in contemporary visual art. The Triennial, a onceevery-three-years exhibition, featured artwork by 15 Hudson Valley artists and was curated by Paola Morsiani and Marc Straus. The gallery’s fall exhibition, Brick by Brick: The Erie Canal & the Building Boom, which was inspired by the shared story of the Erie Canal and the Hudson Valley brickyards, was funded with a $75,000 grant from New York’s Regional Economic Development Council. Artworks by 12 regional artists were positioned alongside historic materials, as well as colorful personal accounts of brick-industry descendants and brick enthusiasts.

“Art is standing with one hand extended into the universe and one hand extended into the world, and letting ourselves be a conduit for passing energy. – Albert Einstein current exhibitions in the gallery. The program provides a safe and inspiring space for youth to positively collaborate and socialize with other area teens. It was supported by a major grant from the Wiener Family Philanthropy. In 2018, ArtsWestchester secured funding from White Plains Hospital and Con Edison to make its ArtsMobile proposal a reality for 2019. The goal of the ArtsMobile is to bring free arts programming for audiences of all ages to community sites and events. Professional teaching artists will provide hands-on arts workshops, designed to spark imagination and encourage creative expression, to those who have little or no access to the arts.

Throughout 2018, ArtsWestchester continued to provide short- and long-term artist residencies, bringing art to schools in order to enhance their existing curriculum with handson performing, literary and visual art activities. Throughout the year, ArtsWestchester’s community education programs helped individuals who are struggling with mental challenges. These programs are designed to foster meaningful creative activities that boost confidence and self-esteem in youth. They also increase socialization and improve dexterity and cognitive abilities in older adults. ArtsWestchester’s Teen Tuesdays & Thursdays dropin program for 12-16 year-olds was expanded as well. “Creativity is a habit, and the best creativity is the result of good work habits.” – Twyla Tharp
ArtsWestchester kicked off 2018 with a community program that featured hiphop poet Toni Blackman, who worked with youth from the Carver Center, Children’s Village, Safe Harbor, the Boys and Girls Club of New Rochelle, and Family Services of Westchester in a freestyle poetry program offered in its gallery. ArtsWestchester presented Westchester County’s firstever Paraguayan cultural festival in May, which had more than 350 people in attendance. The following month, it presented West African dance workshops to Mt. Vernon youth, followed by an outdoor Ghanaian music and dance festival that attracted more than 500 people. During the month of September, ArtsWestchester collaborated with the City of White Plains and the White Plains BID to present the seventh annual JazzFest White Plains festival. JazzFest
offered 23 performances at 13 diverse venues over a five-day period. The festival reached an audience of more than 3,500 jazz enthusiasts of all ages. The Folk Arts program presented two robust events in conjunction with ArtsWestchester’s Brick by Brick exhibition. In October, three generations of ItalianAmericans, along with funders from the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 1 NY, led a workshop about bricklaying and discussed the history of masonry in the region. In November, the Haverstraw African American Connection, joined by five Rockland County gospel legends, premiered “Songs of the Brickyards: The Untold Story of Haverstraw’s African American Community.” Weaving history, personal story and song, the theatrical program traced the history of Haverstraw’s AfricanAmerican brickyard workers, from the 18th century to the present. The program was met with a packed house.
