FROM THE CEO

2019 ArtsWestchester Annual Report

Dear Friends of ArtsWestchester:

4

If there is an underlying theme in our work in 2019, it is one of enlivening communities. Working together with artists and arts groups, we supported creative and compassionate arts activities throughout Westchester. With support from county and state government, our $1.3M grants program supported hundreds of community arts groups in both Westchester and Rockland Counties. With vital support from White Plains Hospital and Con Edison, ArtsWestchester launched the ArtsMobile, a groundbreaking program to bring hands-on arts activities to diverse communities throughout the County. Site visits to senior communities, family centers and housing projects served more than 2,200 children and adults in 2019. Through our public art and folk arts programs, we celebrated the vibrancy that both contemporary and traditional arts lend to our varied communities. ArtsWestchester brought art

activities to schools, mental health communities and neighborhoods all over Westchester. We thank all of you for your support and participation in ArtsWestchester’s growing community and encourage you to find new ways of getting involved next year! We need your help now more than ever. Cordially,

Janet T. Langsam CEO, ArtsWestchester

FROM THE PRESIDENT To the Many Friends, Supporters, Patrons and Lovers of the Arts:

Now at the end of 2019, our Young Adult Leadership Council, supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is designed to be a career and college readiness program for youth aged 16-21. I am proud to lead a diverse, creative and proactive group of individuals who take great pride in this organization and the incredible growth that it continues to foster in our community. Thank you all for your support throughout 2019,

Michael Minihan President, ArtsWestchester

2019 ArtsWestchester Annual Report

When ArtsWestchester first rolled out its Gotta Love the Arts campaign, it was with the intent of expanding people’s notions about what art is and what it can be. We wanted people to know that the arts include dancing in the streets, painting murals on construction barricades, drumming circles, Instagram Stories, poetry, folk arts and more! We wanted to help people to embrace their creativity. When it came to inspiring neighborhoods with activities led by professional artists, ArtsWestchester’s new ArtsMobile was there with hands-on activities designed for entire families to enjoy. Sometimes it was through painting, other times it was through clay projects, music or dance. Our pairing of professional artists with the new arts van brought free ArtsMobile activities to underserved communities throughout Westchester. Additionally, our Teen Tuesdays & Thursdays program continued to expand, providing a safe and inspiring place for teens to create and socialize in a free after-school arts program held in ArtsWestchester’s gallery.

Building & Restoration

RESTORING OUR HISTORIC BUILDING

2019 ArtsWestchester Annual Report

IS A LABOR OF LOVE

8

ArtsWestchester continued its renovations and improvements to its historic home at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue. With the objective of beautifying and branding its exterior façade, the building’s original first floor windows were enlivened with the addition of custom-designed brise soleils that feature ArtsWestchester’s logo. The custom-built window decor adds vibrancy to the uniform windows of the former bank, better aligning its exterior façade with the building’s present function as a home for the arts. Additionally, on the Martine Avenue side of the building, ArtsWestchester installed ground-level poster cases that allow the organization to better promote its arts events and programming to pedestrians and vehicle traffic in the City of White Plains. With climate change an ongoing concern, ArtsWestchester has successfully converted every light fixture in the building to energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures. This overhaul has allowed ArtsWestchester to reduce its overall electricity consumption while bringing a modern feel to its artist spaces and creative offices. Two new energyefficient air conditioners are also on the way. In addition to new lighting, ArtsWestchester converted several individual offices into a shared co-working entrepreneurial hub introduced by the White Plains-based company Koi Creative Spaces.

Located on the 5th floor, this newly designed space offers a creative office environment for local start-ups to establish and grow their businesses. ArtsWestchester now offers cutting-edge business space as an alternative to Manhattan.

ArtsWestchester continued to provide communities throughout Westchester with shortand long-term artist residencies. These programs brought art into schools as a way of enhancing existing curriculum with hands-on performing, literary and visual art activities. Throughout the year, ArtsWestchester’s community education program also served individuals who struggle with mental challenges by providing creative activities for clients of mental health services. ArtsWestchester’s Teen Tuesdays & Thursdays drop-in program for 11-17 year-olds was expanded. In addition to the sculpture commission, ArtsWestchester worked with GDC to acquire interior sculptures, paintings and prints by Hudson Valley regional artists for its 50 Main Street property. Rounding out the organization’s public art efforts for 2019 was a mural project with LMC, a Lennar company, which brought six colorful murals to the temporary construction walls of 60 South Broadway in White Plains.

2019 ArtsWestchester Annual Report

2019 was a year of memorable arts programming that engaged diverse audiences and expanded ArtsWestchester’s capacity to serve the greater Westchester community through exhibitions, performances and public art. Opening the exhibition season was Modern Families, a photography exhibition that focused the camera lens on the “families we’re given and the families we choose.” Rarely-exhibited group portraits by Harlem Renaissance photographer James Van Der Zee were presented alongside contemporary photographers who illuminate the diverse definitions of family in our communities. The exhibition was supported with a $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). Also supported by the NEA with a $30,000 grant, DATAISM featured artists who use data and data collecting in their artistic practices to probe present realities and reimagine the future. In addition to our in-gallery activities, ArtsWestchester’s curatorial staff worked with the private and public sectors to expand public art in Westchester. They worked with the New York State Thruway Authority to identify artists for 10 commissioned works of art for the shared use path of the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Winners were also selected for large-scale public sculpture commissions at 42 Broad Street with Alexander Development Group in Mount Vernon, and at 50 Main Street with Ginsburg Development

2019 ArtsWestchester Annual Report

Throughout 2019, ArtsWestchester focused much of its marketing and public relations efforts on building the ArtsWestchester brand and growing arts audiences through digital media platforms and in-person events. Throughout the year, much effort was focused on producing compelling online, video and social media content that highlighted the artists, arts programs and cultural events presented by ArtsWestchester and its affiliate arts organizations. The arts council also launched a ”Gotta Love the Arts” social media and print ad campaign that aims to broaden the ways in which people think about arts and culture. ArtsWestchester connected people to the arts community through its artsw.org website, its comprehensive calendar, monthly ArtsNews publication, weekly e-newsletter and social media. Through its weekly Arts(e)News email, which features a “Top 5 Arts Picks,” ArtsWestchester delivered more than 250 cultural happenings directly to people’s inboxes throughout the year. Through strategic partnerships with Westchester Business Journal and Examiner Media newspapers, ten issues of ArtsNews, were published and distributed throughout Westchester as a means of promoting the arts events, exhibitions and classes of affiliate arts organizations. ArtsNews was also redesigned to give it a more contemporary look.
