In times like these, we need the arts more than ever.
HERO BENEFAC TOR
WE SALUTE THIS YEAR’S ARTSWESTCHESTER AWARD WINNERS Kenneth Jenkins Kevin Plunkett Jeffrey Haydon
Thank you for your outstanding leadership in the cultural community.
FROM THE CEO
Janet T. Langsam (photo credit: Leslye Smith)
One of the most cherished aspects of living in Westchester is the exceptional and boundless cultural opportunities we enjoy as residents of every age and income. Whether through literature, music, dance or through artwork viewed in museums or galleries, the arts have always sustained us, and they always will. The power of the arts helps transcend the fear of this current COVID crisis. Facing devastating financial losses and an uncertain future however, the arts are suffering like never before and it is our job to save them. That’s why we’re here tonight. We applaud Entergy as our 2020 corporate honoree which, in its 20 plus years in Westchester, has been the ultimate corporate citizen. Entergy even made it possible for the legendary jazz great Wynton Marsalis to be with us tonight. With gratitude, we also celebrate three arts champions who have stuck by us in good times and bad with their extraordinary arts leadership: Deputy County Executive Kenneth Jenkins; Kevin J. Plunkett, former Deputy County Executive, now Director of Strategic Initiatives, Simone Development Companies and Jeffrey P. Haydon, President & CEO of the prestigious Ravinia Festival and former CEO of Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. Thank you one and all for joining us tonight. With your vital help, ArtsWestchester will be able to continue to keep the arts in all their forms alive and well in Westchester…And we will be able to say we did it together.
– Janet T. Langsam
CEO, ArtsWestchester
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Michael Minihan (photo credit: Leslye Smith)
Today, the survival of many Westchester County arts organizations is at stake – shuttered theatres, empty museums, and cancelled performances have resulted in staggering losses of revenue. Many will never open their doors again. As the county’s largest funder of the arts, ArtsWestchester is committed to keeping the arts alive during and after COVID. With your help, when this pandemic ends, our wonderful, beautiful and inspiring arts world of Westchester will emerge to renew our spirits as only the arts can. Please keep believing that the arts really do matter…they reflect our humanity, our culture and our diversity. They help us recover from grief, express our joy, and understand the world. They are an indispensable tool for healing and a mirror of our society. Please join us as never before to safeguard the cultural life of this county with your continued support of ArtsWestchester. Thank you for sharing this virtual celebration with us because the arts really do matter.
– Michael Minihan President, ArtsWestchester

Entergy Co rporate Award The Corporate Award celebrates a company that has enriched Westchester through innovative arts and business partnerships, significantly contributing to the cultural community in meaningful and measurable ways. Entergy came into our lives in 2000 when they purchased Indian Point Energy Center. As a New Orleans company, they knew how to win the hearts of us New Yorkers. Jazz and Art was the magic formula. Thus, began the powerful partnership with two primary arts organizations—Jazz at Lincoln Center and ArtsWestchester. And, yes-- with its generous embrace and corporate citizenship, Entergy support became transformational to both organizations. And that’s not all. With more than $30 million in contributions, their generosity has touched more than 100 organizations, large and small in Westchester and beyond, such as the Daisy Jopling Foundation, Music Conservatory of Westchester, Hudson River Museum, White Plains Performing Arts Center and Historic Hudson Valley’s The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze. Entergy also gave major support for the restoration of the 1930s historic Paramount Hudson Valley to its former glory. All this, in addition to major support of the Westchester Library System and the Hendrick Hudson Free Library. Entergy’s 20 years of significant investment in the cultural and the nonprofit sectors has been a powerful example for other corporations. As Entergy phases out their business interests in Westchester, its legacy is assured by their deep, meaningful commitment to our community. Their efforts helped to make Westchester better by fostering equity, social justice, community-building, education and accessibility of the arts in under-resourced areas in the county. ArtsWestchester is proud to salute this extraordinary corporation and the many Entergy colleagues and friends we have worked with over the years, especially the formidable Kenneth Theobalds, Vice President of Government & Regulatory Affairs. Thank you for recognizing that art and culture defines a community. Thank you for understanding that the arts are an economic driver that boost cultural tourism and… Thank you for understanding that the arts feed the soul of a country and can help us all heal in this challenging time. After 20 years and $30 million in contributions to more than 100 organizations, we hope that our legacy is one of a more equitable and inclusive Westchester community that is enlivened by a strong arts infrastructure and arts opportunities for all.

ARTSWESTCHESTER SALUTES
Kenneth Jenkins Westchester Deputy County Executive
L e a d e rsh ip Award The Leadership Award recognizes those who have made extraordinary contributions to the quality of life in Westchester through support of the arts. As Deputy County Executive, former Chairman, and member of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, Kenneth Jenkins has put forth a great deal of time and effort to expand the County’s vision of the arts to include many forms of creative expression that organically spring forth from the grassroots community. Jenkins has strengthened the public-private partnership between the arts and government by supporting innovative programs, particularly those for our underserved communities, recognizing the arts as a critical economic engine. Jenkins was instrumental in launching the very successful “Yonkers Arts Initiative,” an innovative approach to promoting arts in the City. Jenkins has been a leader in Democratic politics for over 25 years. During that time he has been actively engaged in serving the public and the community through his work on key committees, and as a leader in cultural and ethnic diversity issues. Jenkins is a people-person, and nowhere is that more evident than in his hometown of Yonkers where he was President, for over five years, of the Yonkers Branch of the NAACP, and as host of a public access cable show discussing issues relevant to the African-American community. Jenkins has served on numerous prestigious boards of community groups and organizations that improve the lives of Westchester residents, including Greyston Foundation; the United Way; Westchester County Crimestoppers; among others. PAGE 10Ken and his wife Deborah have three children and are longtime Yonkers residents.
The arts have long been a part of the unique mosaic that makes Westchester County a beautiful place for us all to call home. I am humbled and honored to be receiving the ArtsWestchester Leadership Award for 2020, and to carry on the terrific partnership that exists between Westchester County Government and our friends at ArtsWestchester.

ARTSWESTCHESTER SALUTES
Kevin J. Plunkett Director of Strategic Initiatives, Simone Development Companies
L e a dersh ip Award The Leadership Award recognizes those who have made extraordinary contributions to the quality of life in Westchester through support of the arts. As former Deputy County Executive, now Director of Strategic Initiatives, Simone Development Companies, Kevin J. Plunkett came to ArtsWestchester as a Board member in 2005 and blessed us with his sage lawyerly advice and strategic wisdom. As Deputy County Executive, he recognized the arts not only for its intrinsic value, but for its economic impact which, pre-COVID, was $172 million, supporting 5,200 jobs. Now, the arts are in trouble with many cultural organizations and artists facing an uncertain future. Plunkett, bless his heart, returned to the ArtsWestchester Board as an Emeritus Member to say, “What can I do to help.” Plunkett, who has practiced law for more than three decades, is currently a member of the American, the New York State, Florida, Westchester and Westchester Women’s Bar Associations. He served on four Governor Judicial Screening committees from 1997 to 2017. He is currently on the board of Tompkins Mahopac Bank and has served on the boards of numerous other not-for-profit and educational institutions including Westchester ARC Foundation and Iona College. He is a lifetime resident of Tarrytown and he and his wife Rosemary have five children and seven grandchildren. PAGE 12

In my current role as Director of Strategic Initiatives for Simone Development and as Former Deputy County Executive and long-time Board Member of ArtsWestchester, I witnessed firsthand the important contribution that the arts make in Westchester to both the people who participate in creative cultural programs and to the economic and cultural well-being of our communities. The arts matter, that’s why they deserve our support.

Jeffrey P. Haydon President & CEO, Ravinia Festival; Former CEO, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts
L e a dersh ip Award The Leadership Award recognizes those who have made extraordinary contributions to the quality of life in Westchester through support of the arts. With 25 years of arts management experience and a lifelong love of music, former CEO of Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, Jeffrey P. Haydon has played a significant role in partnering with ArtsWestchester annually on countywide arts advocacy efforts. With his leadership, he has worked with ArtsWestchester successfully communicating the vital role that the arts play in people’s lives and as part of Westchester’s economy. Haydon has spent the past eight years leading a renaissance at Caramoor, including raising more than $40 million to quadruple the endowment and to invest over $15 million into the Center’s historic Rosen House, as well as the grounds and gardens on the 90-acre estate. During his tenure, Haydon has also launched several new initiatives, including a collaboration of more than six years with Jazz at Lincoln Center, an expansion of Caramoor’s American Roots series, and its acclaimed In the Garden of Sonic Delights sound art exhibition. He also led Caramoor to expand its yearly programming by over 80 percent and initiated numerous community collaborations, all while improving Caramoor’s financial performance by more than 20 percent. We wish Jeff further success at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois, where he now serves as President and CEO of the nation’s oldest music festival.
PAGE 14
As we are in challenging times that try to claim our emotions, let’s just remember that the arts are essential to the healing of our economy, to our communities and, most importantly, to ourselves.

GALA 2020 SPECIAL GUEST PERFORMANCES BY LEGENDARY JAZZ MUSICIAN
WYNTON MARSALIS Managing and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center
Wynton Marsalis (Trumpet) is the managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and a world-renowned trumpeter and composer. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961, Marsalis began his classical training on trumpet at age 12, entered The Juilliard School at age 17, and then joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He made his recording debut as a leader in 1982, and has since recorded more than 60 jazz and classical recordings, which have won him nine Grammy Awards. In 1983 he became the first and only artist to win both classical and jazz Grammys in the same year and repeated this feat in 1984. Marsalis is also an internationally respected teacher and spokesman for music education, and has received honorary doctorates from dozens of U.S. universities and colleges. He has written six books; his most recent are Squeak, Rumble, Whomp! Whomp! Whomp!, illustrated by Paul Rogers and published by Candlewick Press in 2012, and Moving to Higher Ground: How Jazz Can Change Your Life with Geoffrey C. Ward, published by Random House in 2008. In 1997 Marsalis became the first jazz artist to be awarded the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in music for his oratorio Blood on the Fields, which was commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center. In 2001 he was appointed Messenger of Peace by Mr. Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, and he has also been designated cultural ambassador to the United States of America by the U.S. State Department through their CultureConnect program. Marsalis was instrumental in the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief concert, produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center. The event raised more than $3 million for the Higher Ground Relief Fund to benefit the musicians, music industry-related enterprises, and other individuals and entities from the areas in Greater New Orleans who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Marsalis helped lead the effort to construct Jazz at Lincoln Center’s home—Frederick P. Rose Hall—the first education, performance, and broadcast facility devoted to jazz, which opened in October

This moment of crisis has put the life-affirming value of the arts into sharper focus. Art has always been an indispensable tool of survival, teaching us about our history, helping us to process turmoil and grief, and delivering serious meaning with joy. Let’s face this challenge by challenging ourselves and choosing to rise to the occasion. -Wynton Marsalis

ARTSWESTCHESTER: WHO WE ARE
ArtsWestchester is your connection to the arts Through the years, ArtsWestchester has become one of the most important funders in Westchester County for cultural institutions, as well as for emerging arts organizations, community-based arts groups and artists. It is the County’s designated agency, responsible for the distribution of funds that are allocated for the arts. ArtsWestchester’s mission is to provide leadership, vision and support in order to ensure the availability, accessibility and diversity of the arts. ArtsWestchester provides programs and services that enrich the lives of everyone in Westchester County. ArtsWestchester helps fund concerts, exhibitions and plays through grants; brings artists into schools and community centers; advocates PAGE 18
for the arts; and builds audiences through diverse marketing initiatives. In 1998, ArtsWestchester acquired and renovated a nine-story neoclassical bank building at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains, NY. The historic building in the heart of the downtown not only serves as ArtsWestchester’s headquarters, but also as a cultural resource for artists, cultural organizations and the entire Westchester community. Today, the arts are thriving in Westchester largely because ArtsWestchester, in partnership with Westchester County Government, has put the arts on the public agenda, investing more than $40 million over the years in arts and culture in the county.

Our vision is for a Westchester in which every person can explore their creative impulses; where the arts are accessible to every sector of society and are an educational priority in our schools; where opportunities for artists are plentiful; where public art is fundamental to the landscape and cityscape; and where a new generation can use the arts as a window to the world.

OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH WESTCHESTER COUNTY ArtsWestchester grants reach every part of the County and make possible an extraordinary array of cultural activities. Our grants help Westchester’s cultural organizations grow and support individual artists in the creation of new work. The 2020 Challenge Grant Program is a funding opportunity open to cultural organizations that received a Basic Program Support, Project Support, Yonkers Arts Initiative or Mount Vernon Arts Initiative grant in the past three years or an Arts Alive (Westchester County only) grant in the past five years to help boost their operating income by attracting new contributions. This grant is made possible with support from Westchester County government.
Thank you Board of Legislators for adding $250,000 to the Challenge Grant Program!
