from the CEO Who's in Charge of Inspiration? By Janet Langsam, ArtsWestchester CEO When I first met George Yancopoulos, I was dazzled... not by his good looks (although he is handsome by any measure)... not even by his scientific acumen (which is impressive by any measure). The thing I admired most about George is his left brain...his artistic side...his je ne sais quoi side... the side that many scientists believe drives a person's creativity. Now, I admit that the guy is a whiz at science. He mixes neurons, and plays around with genes until a spark appears, most likely somewhere in his left hemisphere. To be honest, some people believe that this left brain/right brain theory is just a myth. However, speak to his staff and there is ample evidence that George is an innovator... a dreamer... a cool chap who thinks up new treatments that don’t exist and then invents them, like a recently-announced skin cancer medication. He thinks a cure for other cancers may be just around the Regeneron-corner. This November, ArtsWestchester gave its first Innovator Award to George Yancopoulos, "a visionary leader who seizes the power of an idea to make the world a better place." So, frankly I was stunned by what George had to say when he got up to speak. He said that "most great ideas are old ideas." Then, he reached back to his Greek heritage and proclaimed that "the source of all inspiration and creativity" is the nine muses in Greek mythology. Silly me. I thought it was the left brain. Turns out that George is not only a scientist and an innovator, but also a poet. The way he tells it, these muses are the daughters of Zeus, who gave artists, philosophers and individuals the necessary inspiration for creation. They are the personifications of literary arts, music, visual arts and science. They were brought to life by Zeus to ward off the evils of the past and relieve sorrows. That's just what George does every day at Regeneron...speaks to his muses, and partners with his colleagues on new ways to relieve sorrows.

news in brief In Memoriam: George Newlin
Music Conservatory of Westchester to "Go Digital"
Founding President George Newlin celebrated ArtsWestchester's 50th anniversary at the organization's 2015 gala (photo credit: Leslye Smith)

George Newlin, the first president of ArtsWestchester, has passed away. An accomplished musician as well as a businessman, Newlin had a passion for the arts that remained strong throughout his life. At one point, he moved to Vienna to study piano and sing opera. He also compiled and published a large collection of anthological works, including casebooks about the people and places in the works of Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope and George Eliot. Newlin majored in music at Princeton University and then attended Yale Law School. In addition to these accolades, he served in the U.S. Army, was a legal associate and worked in business management. Newlin was instrumental in building support for ArtsWestchester and laid the foundation for the organization’s 53-year success.
Music Conservatory of Westchester (MCW) aims to “go digital” by the end of 2020 with the addition of five lower-level studios that will allow the school to put more emphasis on technology-focused instruction. The project will tackle about 4,000 square-feet of undeveloped space on the school’s third floor. According to Joel Breitkopf, president of MCW’s board, the learning and rehearsing of music has evolved. He added “[MCW] too must evolve to meet the music education demands of Westchester community.” A recording studio, for instance, will provide the ability to record music and teach recording engineering. In addition, networked pianos will allow instructors to listen in on a student’s progress even in a group setting. The expansion will also allow for rooms for percussion, jazz, ensembles and music therapy.

artsw briefs Brick by Brick: From the Curators The following is an excerpt from a statement by Kathleen Reckling and Aaron Paige, Curators of ArtsWestchester's Brick by Brick exhibition. "Walk down a street in any town or city along the Hudson River and look at the brick buildings… it’s more than likely you will discover that their origins lie in the Hudson Valley, where a once mighty brick industry fed the development of New York State. With its beginnings in the 17th century and New York’s early Dutch settlers, the story of brickmaking in the Hudson Valley is truly an American story, rich with complex and challenging intersections of immigration, industry and innovation, and of family enterprise, environmental impact and economic development… In [ArtsWestchester’s exhibition] Brick by Brick, bricks become eloquent symbols for a range of subjects that are present in the works of the twelve exhibiting artists: the transient quality of the manmade, the fragility of our environment, forgotten histories and shared human experiences. Artworks include large-scale human heads that are constructed from artist-made bricks, commissioned photographs of remnants of the industry, and [more]. Brick-making was one of the Hudson Valley’s most prolific industries…While the brick industry faded after World War II, its byproducts are still present today in the cultural and physical Bannerman Castle by Christopher Payne composition of our towns and cities. Hudson Valley brick is all around us. It lies within our homes and businesses, speckles our forests, covers our shorelines and appears in our stories. This exhibition connects the materiality of brick as a historic and aesthetic object to the intangible stories that local residents construct around it. The adventures of brick hunters, the discoveries of collectors, and the tales and songs of ancestors past, all find voice here." Brick by Brick is on view through January 19, 2019. For more info, visit artsw.org/brickbybrick. The full curatorial statement can be found in the exhibition catalog on this webpage.

On December 2, New Choral Society opens its 25th anniversary season New Choral Society (photo courtesy of New Choral with Part 1 of Messiah, as Society) well as selections from Parts II and III. The chorus will be accompanied by a quartet of opera and oratorio singers and a chamber orchestra at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church in Scarsdale. On December 9, Westchester Oratorio Society (WOS) will present a “Scratch” version of the holiday favorite. This edition will invite audience members to join the WOS chamber chorus and St. Luke’s choir in singing the choruses of the song. The concert will be accompanied by a pipe organ in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Somers. newchoralsociety.org and westchesteroratorio.org

Mr. Dickens Tells a Christmas Carol In 1867, Charles Dickens toured the United States to perform the story told in his own classic novel, A Christmas Carol. Today, M&M Performing Arts has adapted these presentations by recreating the author’s performances. Actor Michael Von Brodeck will play Dickens, telling the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the many spirits and characters that fill his life. “Dickens” will wander the rooms of Lyndhurst Mansion, which is decorated for the holiday season. For instance, the parlor is staged to represent a traditional Victorian Christmas display. Performances take place between December 14 and 30. The Klezmatics are America’s foremost Klezmer band. This energetic ''Jewish roots music” from Eastern Europe has found international acclaim, in large part because of this vibrantly exciting ensemble. They are, indeed, the face of contemporary Yiddish culture, with deep roots in traditions. Some call them revivalists, but more accurately, they are prominent cultural ambassadors of proud and beautiful Yiddish traditions. Woody Guthrie’s daughter Nora, who resides in Westchester, has made The Klezmatics (photo courtesy of the artist) lyrics by her father Woody available to her friends. Woody wrote numerous Hanukkah songs, inspired by his wife Marjorie, and it is beautiful to see these lyrics come alive with one of the best purveyors of the genre today. The Woody Guthrie Foundation stated: “Guthrie’s Jewish lyrics can be traced to the unusual collaborative relationship he had with his mother-in-law, Aliza Greenblatt, a prominent Yiddish poet who lived across from Guthrie and his family in Brooklyn in the 1940s. Guthrie – the Oklahoma troubadour – and Greenblatt – the Jewish wordsmith – often discussed their artistic projects and critiqued each other’s works, finding common ground in their shared love of culture and social justice, despite very different backgrounds. Their collaboration flourished in 1940s Brooklyn, where Jewish culture was interwoven with music, modern dance, poetry and anti-fascist, pro-labor activism.” Expect exuberance, frolic and pure musical fun. This month’s “picks” also include: • December 1: Joan Osborne’s DYLANOLOGY featuring Anders Osborne and Robert Randolph at Tarrytown Music Hall • December 8: Ellis Paul and Hudson Valley Sally, presented by Walkabout Clearwater Coffeehouse at the Memorial United Methodist Church • December 9: “The Nutcracker” at Tarrytown Music Hall • December 9: The Calidore String Quartet, presented by The Westchester Chamber Music Society at Congregation Emanuel-El of Westchester in Rye

event highlights Gordon Parks Foundation Fellows Use Family as Subjects to Discuss African American Life The Gordon Parks Foundation presents the work of the Foundation's Fellows, Deana Lawson and Derrick Adams, in its American Family exhibition through January 25 in Pleasantville. Each artist’s personal approach to their familial subjects lends complexity to the definition of a broader subject at hand – a contemporary look at the daily lives of African Americans. Multidisciplinary artist Derrick Adams uses collage and photography to examine the influence of popular culture and media on one’s self-image, using family members as his subjects. Lawson redefines the common image of black life, freeing her subjects by redirecting the viewer’s negative misconceptions. She explains: “Like Parks, my motivation is to give meaningful texture and complexity to images of global black culture.” Gordon Parks was an influential photographer in the twentieth century who had a strong commitment to social justice. As such, the Foundation’s fellowship program supports artists who work within the topics of social justice and representation. Along with the work of 2018 fellows Lawson and Adams, the exhibition will showcase a selection of family portraits taken by Parks. According to Executive Director Peter W. Kunhardt, Jr., Lawson and Adams “are creating narratives about the American scene in much the same way as Gordon Parks did throughout his life… they each take such bold approaches to exploring connections between people.” For more info, visit gordonparksfoundation.org.

Original and Latin American Music Inspired by Wind, Water and Motion
Hudson Valley MOCA Presents Art History With a Twist
A concert by Vento Trio on January 12 pays homage to “wind, water and motion.” This theme is reflected both in the songs that will be played and the instruments that will fill the room with those melodies. Janet Grice, who plays bassoon in the group, Vento Trio (photo courtesy of Vento Trio) explains: “We play wind instruments – clarinet, bassoon and flute – and use wind to produce a sound.” The Latin American songs magnify connections to the environment with a repertoire that is inspired by water, like Grice’s arrangement of Cascades by Oliver Nelson. Grice also composed several of the program’s works, including Lake Tear of the Clouds, which is based on the source of the Hudson River in the Adirondacks. Lastly, the concept of “movement” plays heavily in a selection of songs that represent motion, such as birds and trains. Movement also refers to songs written in protest about people who have been forced to leave their homelands for better economic conditions. For instance, Expresso 2222 is a nostalgic tribute to a train that the composer Gilberto Gil took in his homeland of Bahia, Brazil. Kevin Willois (flute) and Sarah Bednarcik (clarinet) round out the Trio. The concert, which is supported by ArtsWestchester's Yonkers Arts Initiative grant, will take place at Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site. For more info, visit ventotrio.com.
Hudson Valley MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) presents a three-part lecture series, Art History With a Twist, led by artist and art historian Marcy B. Freedman. Each lecture focuses on works of art that relate to an unusual topic not often examined in art history. Freedman then connects those works to the politics and cultural values of their time. A slideshow accompanies each lecture, which will be infused with humor and expertise. First, “Inebriation in Western Art” looks at the presence of alcohol in visual art, from a woman who drinks beer in an ancient Egyptian The Absinthe Drinker by Pablo Picasso wall painting to depictions of Dionysus, the god of wine (12/9). Next, “Representing Dance in Visual Art” examines techniques used by artists to suggest movement: for instance, Degas’ famous ballerinas and Nick Cave’s Sound Suit performances. This lecture will be accompanied by a dance performance by Andrea Elam (1/6). Last, “Bodily Functions as Subject Matter” observes the use of bodily functions, such as blood, semen and urine, in contemporary and modern art. This lecture discusses controversial works like Chris Ofili’s The Holy Virgin Mary, which incorporated elephant dung, as well as works by Hermann Nitsch, Vito Acconci and more (2/3). event highlights Whimsical Jewelry at Katonah Museum of Art Expands the Boundaries of Body Ornamentation Through January 27, Katonah Museum of Art (KMA) reinterprets the traditional boundaries of body ornamentation during its exhibition, Outrageous Ornament: Extreme Jewelry in the 21st Century. Curated by the former curator of modern and contemporary design at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Jane Adlin, the show features 50 provocative pieces by artists, jewelers, architects and designers, all of which defy typical expectations of personal adornment. Renowned contemporary artists, such as John Baldessari, construct works that were designed to be worn on the body. One of Baldessari's pieces consists of a shoulder-perching bluebird with diamond eyes. Works like Marjorie Schick’s neckpiece and Ted Noten’s acrylic handbag question whether jewelry is defined by its wearability. Several artists, including Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen, explore the relationship between adornment and the human body, as well as how these pieces play with the human form. In an avant-garde garment by Van Herpen, umbrella ribs and cow leather are transformed into a golden vest and skirt with protruding fanlike shapes. KMA will host a diverse program of events related to Outrageous Ornament, including a private tour of galleries, designers and jewelry studios in the Pot Shots by Daniel Jocz (photo courtesy of Katonah Museum of Art) Hudson Valley on December 1. An artist-led “Victorian Hair Jewelry” workshop for adults will be held on January 12. Throughout the exhibition, visitors can participate in the hands-on design lab, “Design Studio: Wear Your Art,” in the KMA Learning Center. On January 25, “Stroller Tours,” “Senior Socials” and “Imagine it! After School” programs will offer tours of the exhibition along with activities for all ages. For more info, visit katonahmuseum.org.
All-Beethoven Festival in Yonkers Yonkers Philharmonic will present its allBeethoven festival concert on January 27. The fourth annual concert was originally initiated in memory of the late Maestro James Sadewhite, former Yonkers Philharmonic Conductor and Music Director. The Marcy Rosen (photo source: marcyrosen.com) and Daniel Phillips (photo source: chambermusicsociety.org) community orchestra, comprised of about 60 professional and amateur musicians, will perform Symphony No.3 Eroica as well as the only triple concerto composed by Beethoven. Triple Concerto was written for piano, cello and violin and will feature three professional soloists: Daniel Phillips (violin), Marcy Rosen (cello) and Morey Ritt (piano). The Beethoven festival, the Philharmonic’s second of four season events, will take place at Saunders Trade and Technical High School in Yonkers. For more info, visit yonkersphilharmonic.com.
Beloved Disney Musical Takes the Stage in White Plains
A beloved tale will come to life on the White Plains Performing Arts Center (WPPAC) stage this winter. With fully-designed costumes and set, the Disney classic Beauty and the Beast will tell the story of Belle, a young woman who, when she wanders into a castle, meets a cast of quirky and unusual characters. The crux of the tale is rooted in the fact that these characters are all imprisoned under a spell: Lumiere, the candlestick, is actually the castle’s maître d'; Mrs. Potts, the teapot, is head of the castle’s kitchen; and Beast is the young prince who is to blame for getting them all trapped under the spell. The curse will be lifted once Beast can learn to love and be loved in return.
