“Some day, I want to paint like that.” When we see great art, it can spark our creativity and imagination and helps us see the world in a different way. Wells Fargo celebrates ArtsWestchester.

FROM THE CEO These are trying times: so many needs... so many challenges... so many pressures. It is daunting. If 2016 has taught us anything, it is that making choices is wrenchingly difficult, but our democracy demands it. The world has changed, and so has the cultural community. As “arts people,” we are making the arts more available and accessible to more people. That effort has come a long way, but continues to grow. Now our mission has expanded to use the arts as a way to inspire, unite, heal, change lives, educate, inform, and on and on. Not a bad thing. The arts, are more and more, perceived as something that is relevant to our life’s journey. Janet T. Langsam (photo credit: Cathy Pinsky)

As Americans, we treasure our freedom of expression, which has given to us the arts, in all its forms, as a universal language – one that connects hearts and minds in conversation, imagination and thought. Most significant for the near term, and for the future, is the acknowledgement that children are our future. We need to recognize that the arts are an essential ingredient in giving them the tools to navigate what has become a divisive national dialogue. Your presence here tonight means that you know, as we do, that “the arts matter.” After the brutal national debate that we have all witnessed in somewhat disbelief, I believe the arts matter more than ever before.

A Word From Our 2016 Gala Dinner Chairs

The Honorable & Mrs. Robert P. Astorino Honorary Dinner Chairs

My wife Sheila and I are pleased to be serving as honorary chairs for ArtsWestchester’s gala. Westchester wouldn’t be the place in which we love to live and work, if it were not for the arts. Music, dance, theatre, movies, museums – our county has them all. But that’s not by accident. Like everything else of value, the arts need advocates and supporters. Westchester County is proud to be a partner of ArtsWestchester. The vibrancy of Westchester’s arts scene, and its quality of life, depends on ArtsWestchester.

We are truly thrilled and honored to be serving as chairs of the 2016 ArtsWestchester Gala. The funds from this event will support arts and culture throughout our community, touching everyone at all stages of life. Whether it is bringing artists into our schools, exhibitions into our galleries, or performances into our theaters, ArtsWestchester improves the quality of life for everyone.

Emily Grant The arts have given me and my husband Eugene a lifetime of joy. Now more than ever, the arts are vital for our nation. They offer us a way to bring our country together.

NY State Senator Andrea StewartCousins is a longtime supporter of ArtsWestchester’s mission to keep the arts accessible and thriving in Westchester. Elected by her colleagues to serve as Leader of the Senate Democratic Conference in December 2012, Stewart-Cousins is the first female leader of a legislative conference in New York State history.

For more than sixty years, Emily Grant has been a driving force in the cultural community. She and her husband Eugene have positively impacted almost every cultural organization in the county, including Purchase College Foundation, ArtsWestchester, Emelin Theatre, and many more. Their love of, and commitment to, the arts will benefit generations to come.

Who We Are

For more than 50 years, ArtsWestchester has been the community’s connection to the arts. An organization that began in 1965, as a conversation among arts advocates and volunteers in a living room, has grown into a nationally recognized private not-for-profit arts council, the largest of its kind in New York State.

Over the years, ArtsWestchester has become one of the most important funders in Westchester County for cultural institutions, as well as for emerging arts organizations, community-based arts groups and artists. It is the County’s designated agency, responsible for the distribution of funds allocated for the arts. ArtsWestchester’s mission is to provide leadership, vision and support in order to ensure the availability, accessibility and diversity of the arts. ArtsWestchester provides programs and services that enrich the lives of everyone in Westchester County. It helps fund concerts, exhibitions and plays through grants; brings artists into schools and

community centers; advocates for the arts; and builds audiences through diverse marketing initiatives. In 1998, ArtsWestchester acquired and renovated a nine-story neo-classical bank building at 31 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains, NY. The historic building in the heart of the downtown not only serves as ArtsWestchester’s headquarters, but also as a cultural resource for artists, cultural organizations, and the entire Westchester community. Today, the arts are thriving in Westchester largely because ArtsWestchester, in partnership with Westchester County Government, has put the arts on the public agenda, investing more than $35 million over the years in arts and culture in the county.

Campaign for the Arts ...quietly moving forward.

Artist residency at School 17 in Yonkers with teaching artist John Rizzo (photo credit: John Rizzo)

Nationwide support for the arts is declining and the impact is being felt right here in Westchester County. Concurrent with this decline in funding is an explosion of need. • In Westchester County, 10.1% of all families live at or below the poverty level. • Individuals of Hispanic origin have more than doubled to over 175,000 people. • The number of seniors is now projected to grow to 243,518 – a 69% increase by 2030. • 8.5 percent of Westchester residents have a disability that impacts daily life. The Campaign for the Arts will help secure the future of the arts in Westchester for generations to come, bringing new Janet Langsam models red hats to be worn at 2016 county budget hearings (photo credit: Leslye Smith) PAGE 16

funding for grants to artists, cultural organizations and for arts education.

ArtsWestchester is the single most important funder in Westchester County for cultural institutions, as well as for emerging arts organization, community-based arts groups and artists. With your help, the Campaign for the Arts will: • Increase support for cultural organizations and artists. • Expand arts education and community programs to reach more children and adults, especially in underserved communities. • Bring more arts programming to children and adults with special needs. For students who have difficulty learning or anyone with special needs, art opens up new avenues, builds self-esteem and a sense of achievement. • Heighten public awareness awareness by utilizing new technology and maximize the use of digital newsletters, social media and the web to build arts audiences.
