I am worried. And I am not alone. My concern is what’s in store for the bottom lines for not-for-profits this coming year. The predictions in the media are troubling. Some are estimating that a loss of contributions to notfor-profit organizations will be in the billions...perhaps somewhere between $13 and $20 billion. These figures are based upon the anticipated fallout of the recent tax legislation. It’s not that Americans will be less generous. It’s that given a choice, Americans will take an automatic deduction rather than itemize. The motivation to write a check and itemize is gone. What used to be a mental incentive to write that check and declare our generosity on our tax return is now gone. The urge to write the $100, $250 or $500 check has been wiped away and charitable giving is the poorer for it. With federal cutbacks on social programs and growing community needs, there is a case to be made for the idea of making the charitable deduction universal, so that all filers, including non-itemizers, can utilize this provision of the tax code. Until that idea gains momentum, what we call the "safety net" is at risk. And make no mistake, the arts are part of that safety net. For what could be more precious than our freedom of expression?

MONDAY, JUNE 18, 2018 WYKAGYL COUNTRY CLUB, NEW ROCHELLE

At the ArtsWestchester annual golf outing on June 18 at Wykagyl Country Club, records were broken – a record number of foursomes (31) and record proceeds ($100K). Temperatures were high, but refreshments were plentiful and the golf course was pristine, making it a successful day for the players, sponsors and for ArtsWestchester.

It is a season of numbers at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts: the 73rd summer season; new music from 22 living composers; performances on the Center’s expansive 90-acre grounds; live music and family activities through July 29. According to Caramoor’s Vice President of Artistic Programming and Executive Producer, Kathy Schumann: “Live music and [the Center’s] very special setting come together in such a unique way and elevate the concert experience.” An opera performance combines music with the serene environment in a site-specific production of Mozart’s “The Secret Gardener” in Caramoor’s Sunken Garden on July 13. In partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center, a jazz festival on July 21 occupies almost the entirety of the Center’s grounds, featuring performances at various sites throughout the day, ending with headliner Dianne Reeves in the Venetian Theater. On July 12, young pianist Michael Brown will contribute a solo performance in honor of the centennial of Leonard Bernstein’s birth. Caramoor continues to develop its new Chamber Feast event, now returning for its second year on July 15. This year’s Chamber Feast performance features a full roster of alums from its Evnin Rising Stars program, which aims to nurture young talent. Grammy Award-winning Beninese singersongwriter Angélique Kidjo will bring infectious energy, along with pride in her African roots, to the stage on July 28. The summer season is never only for adults. Family offerings include Dancing at Dusk, a series during which guests are exposed to music and dance traditions from around the globe. This year’s series includes an Irish hip-hop hybrid on July 18 and AfroBrazilian program on July 25. For more info, visit caramoor.org.

event highlights ArtsWestchester Triennial Artists Express Meaning Through Process In ArtsWestchester Triennial, fifteen Hudson Valley artists are highlighted in a showcase of “what’s now and what’s new” in the visual art scene. At the core of many of their works is the process by which they were created. These processes bring additional meaning to the artworks. In Michael Brown’s installations, what appear to be broken mirrors are actually the result of a much more involved practice during which the artist uses a broken mirror as a template for his final stainless steel installations. Brown, who was a welder for the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, then cuts everything by hand. This process helps to extend the single moment of aggression that caused the glass to break. Jayoung Yoon’s delicate sculptures are made with the artist’s hair, which she seamlessly weaves, strand by strand, onto the sculpture’s framework. In Yoon’s “The Skull,” the shape of a skull is adorned with this hair. According to the artist: “The skull represents the cycles of life and death and the transparent feeling of the hair sculpture represents the temporality and morality.” Peter Bynum happened upon the practice of his current works due to an accident in his studio; however, the works are purposefully rendered with precision. In Bynum’s large-scale works, acrylic paint trapped between panes of glass is lit from behind. The shifting of paint during this process expresses an energy of movement that bring static patterns to life. The exhibition is on view through July 28 in ArtsWestchester’s downtown White Plains gallery. For more info, visit artsw.org/triennial2018. Detail from Psychedelia: In the Beginning by Peter Bynum

Open Mic Events Offer a Voice to Local Talents

Greenburgh Public Library Series Aims to Preserve Latino Culture

Westchester County is home to a myriad of talent. Several local organizations aim to give these poets, musicians and songwriters the chance to showcase their creative works. Open Mic events foster a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere for those artists to share their labors-of-love or works-in-progress. On the first Wednesday of every month, White An open mic event at White Plains Public Library (photo courtesy of White Plains Public Library and Eric Plains Public Library opens its "Zork" Alan) doors each month for an evening of open mic, slam poetry competition, and performances by guest poets from around the world. Due to Independence Day, the July event will take place the following week. Every first Friday of the month, Antonia Arts hosts an event that offers poets, writers, singers, musicians and actors “five minutes to share [their] voice[s]” at Studio 4 in Peekskill. On the third Friday of the month, Hudson Valley Writers Center (HVWC) asks guests to “share your words, music or comedy in a nurturing, comfortable space” in Sleepy Hollow. HVWC also holds an additional open mic each month. Throughout the month of July, Greenburgh Public Library presents a series that embraces Latin American culture. Café a las Siete aims to “preserve Latino culture for the next generation” with storytelling, music and dance. On July 10, children’s book author Emma Otheguy will help families to discover and protect their heritage through Mariachi Sol Mixteco (photo credit: Tim Grajek) shared stories. On July 14, the band Mariachi Sol Mixteco bring their Mexican values to Westchester. This family band will introduce the mariachi tradition to guests of all cultures. Guests of the series’ July 17 event can expect a workout and education all at once when Maestro Carlos Doñán of Latinshines teaches the basic steps for Salsa dancing to beginner and advanced dancers alike. The final event of the series on July 18 will bring a history of the Milonga and Tango rhythm to the library as professional dancers Carolina Juarena and Daniel Martínez, along with the music of Bandoneón, perform and teach popular steps. This series is supported by one of ArtsWestchester’s Arts Alive grants (see page A3). For more info, visit greenburghlibrary.org.

event highlights Artworks by Incarcerated Men and Women on Display in Ossining Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) uses the creative arts, including theater, writing and visual arts, in order to develop and expand critical life skills of the incarcerated men and women it serves. As a result, more than 60 works by RTA prisoner members from five maximum and medium security prisons will be on display at Ossining Public Library Art Gallery through July 31. The works in Images from Behind Prison Walls range from painting and charcoal to pen and makeup, and tackle topics such as prison life, freedom and mental well-being. Artist Ivie DeMolina painted a pair of red stilettos because, in her words: “it’s the closest [she gets] to wearing them,” while Hector Rodriguez’s painting is inspired by nature since, as he explains, “nature’s magic reminds [him] of [his] mother.” A public reception on July 14 will present an opportunity Magical Garden by Hector Rodriguez for guests to meet two formerly incarcerated prisoners who have work in the show, Jeffrey Clemente and Amaury Bonilla. Bonilla, who served ten years in Sing Sing Prison, explained: “Through this exhibit, viewers will gain awareness that [prisoners are] not just a number. We’re human beings able to express ourselves in numerous ways.” RTA, which partnered with Ossining Public Library, Ossining Arts Council and Sing Sing Prison Museum for this exhibition, has been effective in decreasing its members’ “return to prison rate.” While the national return rate is more than 50%, the rate of members who have participated in RTA’s program is less than 7%. Early and Rarely-Exhibited Works by Louis Comfort Tiffany on View at Lyndhurst Mansion When one hears the last name “Tiffany,” they often think of the jewelry company Tiffany & Co., or its founder’s son, designer and artist Louis Comfort Tiffany. It is the latter Tiffany whose stained glass lamps and windows are recognized in museums around the world. Through September 24, more than fifty early and rarely-exhibited works by Louis Comfort Tiffany will be on display at Lyndhurst Mansion and its art gallery. While his work with stained glass is represented in the exhibition, Becoming Tiffany instead focuses on the artist’s early career and his transition from painter to designer. Early paintings reveal Tiffany’s documentation of industrialization along the Hudson River as well as his consideration of racial inequality in the North. However, in the 1880s, paintings proved too challenging for the market, thereby setting his course as an interior decorator. After this, Near Eastern influences appear in Tiffany’s decorative patterns after his travels to Egypt and Morocco and his work designing synagogues helped him to establish motifs in his decorative pieces. Also emphasized in Becoming Tiffany is the relationship between Lyndhurst Mansion’s owners and the artist. Railroad tycoon Jay Gould and his daughter Helen, neighbors to Tiffany’s summer home in Irvington, were early purchasers of the artist’s work. Helen continued collecting Tiffany pieces even after her father’s death, commissioning memorial windows for her parents and outfitted the Mansion’s rooms with lamps and shades as the estate became electrified. The lamps on display in the exhibition reflect the placement of items during that time. For more info, visit lyndhurst.org.

event highlights Weaving Into the Fabric of History at Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art

Detail of Mystery by Orly Cogan

Israeli fiber artist Orly Cogan collaborates with unnamed women of generations past. The foundation of her work is the utilitarian craftwork of women from previous eras – vintage materials like tablecloths and baby linens – onto which she crochets, embroiders and paints her experiences as a modern woman. Summer Lovin’, her solo exhibition at Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA) in Peekskill, displays seven of the artist's works through July 29. According to HVCCA Co-Founder and Director Livia Straus: “[Cogan’s works] bring back memories of visiting grandparents’ homes…but upon investigating, the imagery is raw, feminist and family-based – domestication stripped of second-skin clothing.” Cogan’s works tell parallel and converging narratives that address the modesty of times gone by with a contrasting portrayal of a more liberated contemporary woman. Narratives, literally woven into the fabric of history, are updated to explore and address themes such as sexuality, relationship dynamics, stereotypes and sex-positive imagery. For more info, visit hvcca.org.

International Music and Dance at New Rochelle Public Library This July, New Rochelle Public Library will bring Greek, Jewish, Native American and Middle Eastern cultures to its stage through the artistic customs of each respective culture. For the 35th year, the Library’s International Music and Dance series embraces traditions of music, dance and song as told from unique perspectives. The series kicks off on July 10 with the Holy Trinity Dance Troupe of the New Rochelle Greek Orthodox Church. The troupe will perform authentic dances from mainland Greece and its islands. On July 17, traditional Jewish dance and music take the stage with the multi-generational Westchester Klezmer Program. Consisting of children, teens and adults, the group implements both classic and modern Klezmer music into its repertoire. On July 24, performing artists from Redhawk Native American Arts Council will educate the public, in full regalia, about Native American heritage through song, dance and theater in an event that will encourage audience participation. The series will end with Arabian dancing by Aszmara. The performer will be accompanied by music from Armenia, Turkey and Egypt. All events take place in the Library’s Ossie Davis Theater.
