Loving Caramoor by Janet Langsam, ArtsWestchester CEO

If one is to be honored, I would wish it to be in such an idyllic place as Caramoor, where butterflies mingle with guests amidst lush greenery, peonies and irises, now in bloom, and the drumbeat of applause punctuating the air. That was my vision when CEO Jeff Haydon called to say that the Caramoor board wished to honor ArtsWestchester at its June gala. We felt like Apollo, the god of light and (appropriately) music, was shining his light on us for doing what we love to do, which is to give grants to more than 100 Janet Langsam and John Peckham at Caramoor’s Westchester organizations and Opening Night gala (photo credit: Gabe Palacio) artists. That of course includes Caramoor, which brings more than 15,000 folks to its incredible site…very much in the tradition of its original owners, Lucie and Walter Rosen – great lovers of music, who hosted private musical performances prior to 1946, when the House was opened to the public. The rest is as they say “history,” which for Caramoor means a world-class summer music festival with the (pardon, please) bells and whistles and fiddles. On the night of the gala, ArtsWestchester Chairman John Peckham and I were feted by Caramoor CEO Jeff Haydon and Chairman Jim Attwood Jr. before gathering in the Italian Pavilion, a Brunelleschi-inspired outdoor structure where the Bel Canto Young Artists, under the baton of Will Crutchfield, belted out a diverse program of opera music. Every Caramoor devotee, including me, probably has their own favorite Caramoor programs. Sad to say, I missed the annual American Roots Music Festival, a mélange of “folk, country, bluegrass, gospel, blues, singer/songwriter, string band, old time, and everything in between.” But there’s plenty of good music yet to come from the renowned St. Luke’s Orchestra. I’m also looking forward to the double header of Schumann and Shostakovich on July 9 with Daniil Trifonov on piano, the all-day festival with Jazz at Lincoln Center on July 15 and an evening with Sutton Foster on July 29. “Everything we do at Caramoor…is based on the belief that music is an elemental part of a civilized society and a life well lived.” This is straight from the program book and it is well said. Ain’t it the truth!

event highlights Schoolhouse Theater Remembers Artist Gert Mathiesen With Exhibition of His Work When Danish painter, printmaker and ceramicist Gert Mathiesen unexpectedly passed away four years ago, what remained in his wake are more than 1,000 works from his life as an artist. Twenty-five of these works have been travelling, much as Mathiesen did in life, as his wife and fellow artist Pamela Smilow organized a touring exhibition. After being exhibited at the Museum of Danish America in Iowa and Nordia House in Oregon, the pieces return to their rightful home at the Schoolhouse Theater, where the artist met Smilow, had an art studio and created a great deal of his pieces. Prints, paintings, woodcut pieces and more now line the walls of the Theater’s gallery throughout the summer. His use of linoleum as a canvas, as opposed to a means by which to transfer work onto a separate surface, leads as an example of the innovative approaches that Mathiesen took in the creation of his work. Bursting with vibrant colors and bold, expressionistic shapes, many of these works reflect Mathiesen’s life story, referencing his Danish heritage and Viking roots, but also incorporating other cultures into the mix. Schoolhouse Theater is devoted to presenting professional theater to its community in a space where new work is explored. Additionally, it exhibits the work of local artists in an art gallery that is housed in its Croton Falls location. Matheisen’s work is on display Tues, Wed and Thurs, from 11am-2:45pm and by calling 914-277-8477 for an appointment. For more info, visit: schoolhousetheater.org. The Art of Civic Engagement in Port Chester Ceramic artist Teddy Poneman, an artist-in-residence at Clay Art Center, is using his Bowling Together project to incentivize people to participate in civic engagement. Through this project, which was supported by one of ArtsWestchester’s Arts Alive grants, the artist is asking for people to complete four or more hours of volunteer work in Port Chester in exchange for a handmade bowl with a decal of one of the City’s landmarks. Approximately 200 bowls Ceramic bowls by Teddy Poneman (photo courtesy have been made, equating to at least of the artist) 800 hours of volunteerism. On July 15, Bowling Together participants will attend an event at Clay Art Center at which they can pick up their bowls and see works on display, as well as meet and hear one another’s stories, during an open-to-the-public event. Explains Poneman: “It’s special when we can find common ground … this helps us to meet people with different stories and to expand our notions of community… When we disagree, we might have a more nuanced and humanized understanding of ‘the other side.’” The artist has sponsored community volunteer projects once a month since March, leading participants of all ages and backgrounds in clean-up projects. The artist will be accepting volunteers throughout July, until he runs out of bowls. Any remaining bowls will be sold for $20 each with proceeds being donated to Port Chester organizations. New Rochelle Public Library Brings International Music and Dance to Its Stage

A Palo Seco Flamenco Company to Perform at Kykuit

This summer, New Rochelle Public Library will kick off its 34th annual “International Music and Dance” series – a program that highlights cultural traditions from around the world. The five-event series begins with the traditions of Russia on July 11, when folk ensemble Barynya presents dances and songs with balalaika accompaniment. Barynya Ensemble (photo credit: Ken Mahnke) The group’s founder will offer explanatory narration and music. The Japanese Folk Dance Institute introduces the culture, history and spirit of Japan on July 18 through various traditional folk dances from all parts of the country. Arabian Dance by Aszmara on July 25 will be accompanied by folkloric music of Armenia, Turkey and Egypt. The stage comes to life again on August 1, when Bokandeye African Dance and Drum Troupe showcases the drumming, colorful costumes and dancing of African villages. The series closes on August 12, when Calpulli Mexican Dance Company are joined by students of the library’s Mexican dance classes. These dancers will celebrate Mexico’s diverse cultural history. All events will take place at the Ossie Davis Theater, aside from the August 12 event, which takes place in Ruby Dee Park at Library Green. For more info, visit: nrpl.org.

Among its many roles, Tarrytown’s The Pocantico Center, which is managed by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, offers cultural events and lectures to the public as part of its support of artists and arts organizations in the greater New York City area. These programs aren’t chosen by the Fund, but rather by other non-profit arts organizations that nominate artists for performances and residencies. Rebeca Tomás (photo credit: Lee Wexler) While the Fund’s support was previously limited to organizations in New York City, July 18 marks the first event that presents an artist based on a Westchester organization’s participation in the nomination process. Among the artists nominated by ArtsWestchester was flamenco dancer and choreographer Rebeca Tomás and her company A Palo Seco. Under the artistic direction of Tomás, who was named one of ArtsWestchester’s “50 for 50” artists when the organization celebrated its 50th anniversary, the group will perform flamenco styles that range from the masculine Las Farrucas to the improvisational Bulerias on the Kykuit tennis lawn stage on July 18. Often performing with only singing or percussive accompaniment, Tomas is hailed for her ability to present the traditions of flamenco with an innovative and modern context. event highlights Caramoor’s 72nd Season Offers a Variety of Cultural Performances Through July Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, where emerging and established musicians alike shine equally bright, is home to both world premieres and beloved masterpieces. The Center’s 72nd season continues through July 30, during which jazz, opera, country and classical music all take the stage. Selections of American roots music draw from soul, country and bluegrass genres and will feature country folk-rock star Emmylou Harris on July 22, while Broadway favorite Sutton Foster makes her Caramoor debut with a selection of songs from the Great American Songbook on July 29. Jazz offerings include the popular all-day Jazz Festival, presented in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center (July 15). Bel Canto Young Artists, who receive vocal technique training before demonstrating their operatic talent in a set of performances, celebrates its 20th and final year at the Center. They take the stage on July 8, 13 and 23. Singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane will reunite with sextet yMusic for a memorable pairing of classical and pop music in the Spanish Courtyard on July 7. Along with the world premiere of a new work by Kahane that was commissioned by Caramoor for the event, yMusic and Kahane will each choose their favorite songs from the other’s repertoire to provide the framework for the night’s program.

Family-friendly “Dancing at Dusk” programs introduce guests to music and dance from around the globe, including Canada, Mexico and Russia (July 5, 19, 26). In addition to music on the stage(s), Sonic Innovations, three site-specific sound installations commissioned by each Hugh Livingston, Taylor Deupree and Margaret Noble, are installed on the Caramoor grounds throughout the summer. For more info, visit: caramoor.org.

Last Chance to Experience ArtsWestchester’s Street Art Exhibition ArtsWestchester’s From the Streets spring exhibition comes to a close on July 15. The exhibition chronicles the rise of street artists, from vandal to cultural trendsetter, by exploring the evolution of a subculture that has become a global movement. The murals, paintings, photographs, installations and more highlight works from legendary artists of the 1980s in addition to showcasing artists who create innovative works that are informed by those pioneers. The show, cocurated by Marc Leader and Melissa McCaig-Welles, displays the work of more than 35 artists in ArtsWestchester’s historic landmark building. On July 14, ArtsWestchester presents a screening of Saving Banksy in its gallery. Guests will mingle with artists and enjoy a drink while watching a screening of the acclaimed documentary. The film follows a misguided art collector’s attempts to save a painting by renowned artist Banksy from destruction and the auction block. All proceeds from the event will benefit arts programming at the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester. On July 15, “Sound Check” celebrates From the Streets with a closing party reception that will feature live music by local performers. The Shop at ArtsWestchester, open during gallery hours and programs (Tues-Fri 12-5pm and Sat 12-6pm), features works by artists from the Greater New York area, including exhibiting artist Wane. With each exhibition, the shop is re-curated with new artist and designer products that complement artwork that is currently exhibited in the gallery. Docent-led tours of From the Streets are also available by appointment through July 15. For more info on the exhibition and events, visit: artsw.org/fromthestreets.

event highlights Hudson River Museum Presents the Monumental Floral Gardens of Robert Zakanitch Through September 17, Garden of Ornament will adorn the Hudson River Museum with whimsical painted gardens, carefully inhabited by creatures that weave in and out of its floral arrangements. This solo exhibition will feature the large-scale paintings of Robert Zakanitch, one of the founders of the Pattern and Decoration (P&D) movement of the mid-20th century, which was inspired by patterns of home furnishings. The vibrant works-on-display highlight the artist’s stylistic expansion, from his work with abstract patternmaking to his focus on nature. In the 1970s, Zakanitch began to experiment with pattern and ornamentation, which directly challenged dominant art movements of the time, including Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism. Zakanitch explained: “I started doing paintings that were influenced by the linoleum floors we had as kids—these big roses, mostly flowers, and all these curlicues. I wanted to go in just the opposite direction of ‘less is more.’” Garden of Ornament will display Zakanitch’s recent monumental 8-foot gouache paintings. In these extravagant works, Zakanitch breaks the rhythm of floral patterns with delicate birds, butterflies and hummingbirds for the viewer to contemplate. In “Tureens,” his 2007 series of oil paintings, Zakanitch demonstrates his desire to convey compassion through the decoration of objects that are associated with the home. Empire City Casino, an Architectural Gem in Yonkers The recent $50 million expansion at Empire City Casino revamped the way in which a modern casino can be conceived. The design that New York City-based architecture firm, STUDIO V, created for the casino won a New York Design Award for “Commercial and Constructed Architecture.” Setting out to reinvent the modern casino, STUDIO V created a space that reflects functional, technical, social and aesthetic considerations. While a typical casino is cut off from its environment, Empire City Casino features a four-story high arc of frameless glass that expresses the internal energy of the casino on its exterior, and brings the structural drama of the unique architecture into the gaming hall. High above this 35,000 square-foot gaming floor – the sixth largest in the country – rests laser-cut steel “clouds” that are covered with dichroic glass discs. These “clouds” offer a new interpretation of a traditional chandelier, illuminating the space. Along the length of this gaming floor also sits the “New York City Nail Wall” mural, which features Manhattan landmarks such as the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges and the Statue of Liberty. A dramatic curved exterior façade features what is hailed as the largest window in the Northeast. More than 45 feet of frameless low iron glass in a 300-foot arc creates a window to the interior of the casino. The internal environment benefits from the wall as well, as natural light floods the atmosphere. The modern departure from typical casino architecture presents a cohesive energy between the casino’s energetic interior and its organic exterior, making each reflective of one another.
