ALL THAT JAZZ by Janet Langsam (photo credit: Cathy Pinsky)

Jazz people love labels. They just can't help themselves. That's probably because their music defies explanation and often challenges logic. Ask Gerry Malkin, the 63-year old tenor sax player, who calls his ensemble "post bop." Hard to explain, he told me. He used the old Alec Baldwin line: "it's complicated." He threw out themes like stretching harmonies and aggressive interpretation of bebop. Finally, he invoked Coltrane, and then, I sort of kind of understood what I might be hearing on Friday night, September 5th from 8-10:30pm, when he sells out the house at the Arts Exchange with pals and Gerry Malkin peers whom he called "the best musicians in the area. Everyone in the band is a major solo artist." Take guest artist Scott Wendholt of Nyack. He's the lead jazz trumpet in the Carnegie Hall Jazz Ensemble who will be jamming with The Gerry Malkin Jazz Collective made up of bass player Mike McGuirk, pianist Jeff Tittson, guitarist Chris Morrison and drummer Bobby Leonard and, of course, Gerry. But that’s not all. There are nine jazz performances spread over six days... all part of Jazz Fest in White Plains. Check out cabaret singer Alysa Haas at the Arts Exchange on Thursday, September 4th from 8-10:30pm, and then on Saturday, September 6th at the WPPAC, The Blue in Green Project: A Tribute to Miles Davis will be presented by ArtsWestchester and White Plains Performing Arts Center (WPPAC) in its the 400-seat theater, starting at 8pm. The ground-breaking sounds and styles of Miles Davis will be rendered by guitarist Wali Ali, pianist Bob Baldwin, saxophonist Ray Blue, bassist Harvie S, trumpeter Antoine Drye and drummer Tony Jefferson. Those interested in catching the ArtsWestchester and WPPAC performances might consider purchasing a Jazz Pass. New this year, a Jazz Pass will grant the holder access to all three ticketed Jazz Fest events at a discounted rate. Limited to the first 50 purchasers, buying a Jazz Pass will allow the holder to attend performances by Alysa Haas and The Gerry Malkin Jazz Collective at ArtsWestchester on Thursday and Friday, September 4 and 5, in addition to The Blue in Green Project: A Tribute to Miles Davis at WPPAC on Saturday, September 6 – for just $50 per Jazz Pass. artsw 50th anniversary Innovative Arts & Business Partnerships Help the Arts Thrive Approaching a milestone 50th anniversary next year, ArtsWestchester invites area companies to join its anniversary celebration by starting an Arts & Business Partnership program. ArtsWestchester offers a diverse menu of partnership ideas for businesses to support the arts while promoting their companies. Custom programs for businesses to participate in the arts include: arts in the workplace programs, arts event and exhibition sponsorships, corporate underwriting of ArtsWestchester’s monthly newspaper and website, and arts education program sponsorships as well as gallery rentals in ArtsWestchester’s downtown White Plains building.

Working artists are the lifeblood of a creative community. With that in mind, ArtsWestchester is celebrating its 50th anniversary by giving special recognition to 50 Westchester artists. We invite members of the cultural community in Westchester and beyond to nominate candidates for this honor.

A Partnership Highlighted: A new Arts & Business Partnership between BNY Mellon Wealth Management and ArtsWestchester will bring contemporary works on paper from a private collection to Westchester in a free exhibition this October. Drawing Line into Form: Works on Paper by Sculptors from the BNY Mellon Collection will be presented at ArtsWestchester’s downtown White Plains gallery in this unique partnership. The exhibition will offer the public a rare glimpse into a significant collection featuring 69 works by some of the art world’s most recognizable artists. Sol Lewitt, Mark di Suvero, Sarah Sze, Louise Bourgeois, William Kentridge, Henry Moore, and Robert Smithson are among the 59 celebrated contemporary artists that will be showcased in ArtsWestchester’s fall exhibition. “Assembling this collection has been a journey of discovery,” says Curator Brian J. Lang. “Each work of art offers a new perspective and opens a new window into the mind of its creator.”

Nominees may be emerging or mid-career artists, or those who have reached a level of life-time achievement. All nominees must be active in their fields. A panel will make the final selection of awardees. Each of the 50 artists selected will receive an award of $1,000 and public recognition. A selection of these artists will also be featured in Beyond NYC:

The oldest financial institution in the United States, BNY Mellon has a strong history of supporting the arts in all of their forms. With a corporate art collection built over 20 years, the organization has acquired superb examples of art in a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking and photography. “We feel privileged to partner with ArtsWestchester, one of the nation’s leading arts councils to bring artwork from our private collection to the greater Westchester community,” says Jean Marie Connolly, Senior Director for BNY Mellon’s Wealth Management division. Drawing Line into Form opens to the public in ArtsWestchester’s gallery on October 3, 2014, and will be on view until December 6, 2014.

NOMINATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 19, 2014

With over 40 Arts & Business Partnerships initiated since January of this year, ArtsWestchester is well on its way to reaching a 50th anniversary goal of 50 new Arts & Business Partnerships. If your company is looking for a creative way to connect with the community, an Arts & Business

highlights When Modern Was Contemporary: The Roy R. Neuberger Collection

Upcoming Exhibition Raises Funds to Meet Housing Needs

The Neuberger Museum of Art (NMA)’s current exhibition, When Modern Was Contemporary, provides a unique insight into the development of modern art in the United States. The show chronicles the private collection of the museum’s namesake, Roy R. Neuberger. Amassed mainly between the end of World War I and the start of the Cold War, the works remain among the finest personal art collections in a public The Barber Shop by Edward Hopper institution in the United States. The 850-object collection, on view through December 25, is the foundation of the museum and highlights the extraordinary work of Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko, among many others. In conjunction with the exhibition, NMA will publish a 276-page fully illustrated hardcover collection catalogue that chronicles the exhibited work. For more info, visit: www.neuberger.org.

The Preservation Company, a nonprofit organization that helps low and moderate income families of Westchester County to meet their housing needs, will host the Building Hope exhibition and auction in ArtsWestchester’s 9th floor gallery space, Gallery9. The featured artwork, which is all for sale, has been generously donated by local and international artists, many of whom are giving back after being recipients of the organization’s support. Building Hope is on view from September 2-6, from 12-5pm. For more info, visit: artsw.org/buildinghope or contact our gallery at 914-428-4220 x330.

Rye Arts Center Debuts Work of Influential Designer Professionally, the mid-century Modernist designer Irving Harper created some of Herman Miller’s most iconic furniture pieces. His personal work, however, includes hundreds of paper sculptures that Harper has never before allowed out of his Rye home. With an emphasis on simplicity and clean lines, the architectural masks and figures are made with simple tools – paper and Elmers glue – yet are extraordinarily imaginative and detailed. Now, more than 50 years of personal works will be debuted for the first time in Rye Art Center (RAC)’s Irving Harper: A MidCentury Mind At Play exhibition, on view from September 14 through November 8. According to Katharine Dufault, who co-curated the exhibition with Jeff Taylor, “[RAC] hopes to give the viewer a sense of what it is like to live with the art as the artist intended, as these works represent an extension of his personal life and surround him on a daily basis.” For more info, visit: www.ryeartcenter.org. Film Sheds Light on the Healing Power of Dance On September 15, the Steffi Nossen School of Dance and Music Conservatory of Westchester will present the Westchester premiere of Musical Chairs, a film about the healing powers of dance. Directed Still from Musical Chairs by award-winning filmmaker Susan Seidelman, and produced by Westchester resident Janet Carrus, the romantic film follows a former dance instructor recently disabled in a car accident, and her determination to dance again. The screening will take place in the Music Conservatory’s Stadther Recital Hall in White Plains. Proceeds will benefit both the Moving Wheels & Heels adaptive dance program at Steffi Nossen School of Dance and the Music Therapy Institute of the Music Conservatory of Westchester. For more info, contact the Steffi Nossen office at 914-328-1900 or info@steffinossen.org.

BNY Mellon Wealth Management has a long history of supporting the arts in all its forms. This fall, BNY Mellon gives the Westchester Community a rare glimpse of major works by some of the most prominent artists of today. “Drawing Line into Form: Works on Paper by Sculptors from the BNY Mellon Collection” will be on view in ArtsWestchester’s galleries from October 3 – December 6, 2014.

Supporting the arts is more than just writing a check (although we like those, too). There are many ways to improve employee morale and community involvement with your own arts and business partnership. Imagine Westchester without the arts. Then help us make sure that never happens.
