Editorial SOUTH AFRICA’S LEADING VISUAL ARTS PUBLICATION
T
he FNB Jo’burg Art Fair, South Africa’s oldest art fair, has always been the highlight of our publications calendar.
It’s the time where we break bread with other art publications, dress up in our best - as one would go to church and try to be on one’s best behaviour - to embrace similarly minded people all sharing the same love and passion, in this case for art and artistic exploration into the human spirit. This months publication is jammed packed with the best that is happening in SA Art today, especially showcasing young artists, many born after 1994. I could go through the magazine contents like an Aeroplane Captain describing the weather before landing. Instead, I will let you enjoy the discovery and delights for yourself of what we have been able to gather throughout this busy month. In saying this, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my staff, our contributors and advertisers who have supported us throughout the years. We are currently in our twelfth year as an art publication and sixteen in the art information business. Our subscriptions as well as our support continues to grow throughout our Social Media platforms along with an increase in email requests. It is an honour and a rare pleasure to be part of such a special creative and warm dynamic group of people who both seek out something better for our society, question the status quo, give a lot of themselves for the search of spirit in our sometimes complex human world. The 11th edition of FNB JoburgArtFair is our most diverse, with strongest representation from across the African continent, to date. This year the Fair will feature over 60 exhibitors within 4 categories including Contemporary, Solo Presentations, Limited Editions and Art Platforms. The selected galleries and organisations hail from 14 countries across Africa, Europe and the United States with continental galleries from Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Our Contemporary section features many exciting first time exhibitors including THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE (Luanda), joining ELA – Espaço Luanda Arte and MOV’ART from Luanda. Gallery 1957 (Accra) will also be making their Joburg debut as well as Joburg newcomer Guns & Rain. This year’s Solo Presentations section represents the diversity of the Fair. Nine galleries will be presenting artists from Ethiopia, Italy, the Netherlands, Senegal, South Africa and the US. Combined with our Featured Artist and FNB Art Prize activations the Fair will also be introducing Large-scale installations and Curator’s Feature to bring even more show stopping, high quality work to the line up. Debuting the Large-scale installation section is Sue Williamson. Her Messages from the Atlantic Passage took the 2017 visitors of Art Basel (Switzerland) by storm with its powerful narrative of the movements of slaves across the Atlantic Ocean. As our Curator’s Feature, Takunda Regis Billiat (Zimbabwe) will be presenting a new large-scale work elaborating on many themes of his practice. The Talks Programme will once again take place at the Auto & General Theater on the Square at Nelson Mandela Square on Saturday 8 September. Curated by Kabelo Malatsi, the Talks Programme is a provocation to art practitioners to tackle the question “Who’s It For?”. An expansion to this question are two quotes by Jorge Ribalta and Marion von Osten, that hope to instigate a discussion beyond the programme. The local is the specific production of the various historical options with which we are presented and from which we choose, removed from any notion of identity. as a means of making clear that the public is created by the place and practice of exhibiting and by curatorial decisions, and, thirdly, which asks exactly what brings about this positive reference to an art public, whom this public is actually supposed to address, and who constitutes it.

tellenbosch-based artist, Jessica Storm Kapp, 22, has been announced as the winner of the 2018 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition.
fragments of retrieved objects and materials in an attempt to illustrate concepts such as loss, trace, place attachment and reflection.
Kapp won the coveted award for her rammed earth columns and embedded object installation piece titled Mapping Time. The artwork investigates whether fine art can evoke multisensory experiences of home through the use of retrieved objects and materials. These objects have value both because of the site from which they were taken as well as their intrinsic value as traces of dwelling - reconstructing
Being a collector of things, the action of retrieval as well as the histories attached to found objects are central themes in Kapp’s investigations into home, following the event of the Knysna Fires in 2017. Kapp is currently completing her undergraduate degree in Fine Art at Stellenbosch University. Through various print making techniques, photography, sculpture and installation, Jessica strives to create

As the winner of Sasol New Signatures, Kapp walks away with a cash prize of R100 000 and the opportunity to have a solo exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum in 2019, which will mark Sasol’s 30th year sponsoring South Africa’s longest running art competition.
Coming in second place was Cape Town artist Peter Mikael Campbell. He wins for his work in pencil titled, Kaisen, which means, “change for better” in Japanese. In this work Campbell aims to evoke a quiet meditation regarding the balance of opposites – in this case between simplicity and complexityas well as the value of aesthetic beauty as a meaningful pursuit. For the artist, the ultimate purpose for creating this work is to evoke a buffer against the tragedy woven into life.

ART IN THE TIME OF AFRICA Colloquium 13 September 2018 T
he University of Johannesburg Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA), Absa and UJ Arts & Culture in association with the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), will host a one-day colloquium at the Chinua Achebe Auditorium, APK Library on 13 September 2018 with financial support from the UJ Division for Internationalisation and Absa.
Entitled ART IN THE TIME OF AFRICA, this colloquium will cast a post-colonial gaze on contemporary African art practice, criticism, publishing, theory and philosophy of art, within a Pan African context. An impressive line-up of internationally recognised speakers will grace this event with specific insights into the theme under the guidance of chairperson, Gordon Froud, senior lecturer (FADA, UJ), artist and curator. Alicia Knock, adjudicator Absa L’Atelier 2018, Curator: Contemporary art and Prospective department, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France will address the topic of Collecting for Africa and share her recent involvement in the shift towards a more consistent strategy for African acquisitions. She will elaborate on that ongoing-and still growing-strategy, mainly focusing on history and on the blurring of a merely geographic approach (either continental or national). Director of The Showroom in London and lead adjudicator Absa L’Atelier 2018, nominated by SANAVA, Elvira Dyangani Ose, theoretical work on the evolution of artists within new forms of environment, in the absence of conventional institutions and contexts, will inform her contribution entitled About Being Together. Cultural analyst and writer Ashraf Jamal will examine Authorship and the Art Book in Africa. He poses questions such as: What does it mean to write on behalf of Art? Whom does this enterprise reach? What is the basis for this enterprise - is it designed for a closed market? Does it merely speak to a critical cognoscenti? Who and what is the ‘African Artist’ and ‘Contemporary African Art and Culture’ on whose behalf the writer writes?

Ernestine White-Mefetu, Curator of Contemporary Art: Iziko South African National Gallery will interrogate the relevance of art competitions on the African continent and identify the possible short and long-term effects of entering or winning on the artists’ personal and professional development. Her talk is entitled: Platforms of Possibility: The relevance of art competitions in Africa) Johannesburg based artist and curator and winner of the Laureate du Prix sculpture award, Usha Seejarim, will show a short trajectory of process that led to the sculptural artwork exhibited at the Dakar Art Biennale and share insights around what it means to be an artist on the African continent now. Thoughts reflecting the role of prizes and awards in the career of an artist will be touched on. Thabang Menoa, adjudicator Absa L’Atelier 2018, PhD candidate in Art History, (FADA, UJ), will focus on Post-colonialism as reflected in the arts of Africa. He states that the uniqueness of the Absa L’Atelier competition presents an opportunity to evaluate and perhaps even renew our understandings of the various, and often, intersecting issues affecting Africa. The conveners, Annali Dempsey and Gordon Froud, are excited a the prospect of the colloquium and see it as a necessary and relevant event in relation to the role as art educators and practitioners and timely in terms of post-colonial discourse in the Pan African context. The timing too is pertinent with regard to the Absa L’Atelier Competition. The audience will include academics, artists, students as well as the 10 Absa L’Atelier finalists from all over Africa. Academics, arts practitioners, administrators and students are at the frontline of post-colonial discourse and are able and willing to share insights from a philosophical background and practical experience. Stanislaw Trzebinski ahead of his participation in the annual Sculptx Sculpture Fair at Melrose Arch and group sculpture exhibition at The Melrose Gallery. By Eugene Fisher
S
tanislaw Trzebinski moved to Cape Town in 2012 to apprentice in sculpture and bronze casting and now works out of his studio in Woodstock. The guiding thread of his work to date has been an exploration of the symbiotic relationship between humans and the natural world and draws on his intensive exposure to wildlife, cultural diversity and artistic engagement.
What has been the inspiration for your new body of work? This new body of work (of which I have recently started) has more of a conceptual take - My last body of work addressed the physical and spiritual bankruptcy reflected in our society that I feel urban environments perpetuate, resulting in a complete loss of connectivity with nature and therefore ourselves. This new body of work is centred around our historically symbiotic relationship to nature and her elements- more specifically how indigenous cultures all over the world have incorporated these elements in their rituals and ceremonies. It focuses more on our connection with the earth, and the elements and the sculptures I intend on sculpting will each tell a story, and express an idea or emotion revolving around that concept. I’d like to explore how historically indigenous cultures explained seemingly unexplainable (to them at the time) natural phenomenon through storytelling, myths and folk law. The personification of nature in this manner left them with a higher level of respect for the natural world in comparison to today’s “well informed” modern day man. Will your inclusion in the upcoming Sculptex at The Melrose Gallery feature any of your new work? What can we look forward to seeing at Sculptex? Yes indeed. Sculpt X will incorporate some works from this new body I am working onNamely, Yin Yang. As the name suggests this piece was an exploration of how contrary

forces can complement one another. Man (alive - flesh) and earth (lifeless - stone), life and death, negative and positive (from a sculptural point of view - the use of negative space to create tension and positive sculpture). You have started to include some limited edition prints and etched copper and brass as part of your portfolio. Are these all related to and part of the process of creating your sculptures? I would say that they are more of an extension of my sculptural work. I started working on more two dimensional work due to a nasty spell of what I suppose is the sculptors equivalent of writer’s block. I couldn’t sculpt for months. It was as if my spark had gone out- as a result of some difficult challenges in my personal life so I turned to another avenue of expression and let the sculpting take the back seat for a bit. Thankfully my sculpting flow returned short after!

But the motif is similar, and draws inspiration from nature as I have done in my work before. They are more process based- and the process its self, deciphers what the artwork looks like in the end. Do you ever find yourself turning down commissions and why? What has been the most unusual request that you have received? I will only turn a commission down if the client is too specific about why he/she wants. The kind of commissions that I do take on are ones that give me the freedom to create an artwork for the client that is within the parameters of the body of work on which I am working on so that I can include the piece in the body of work once finished. I rarely do commissions of one off unique pieces- the time and expenses

(of moulds and production costs) that go into sculpting any sculpture isn’t worth just casting a unique once off piece. Can we look forward to full Stanislaw Trzebinski solo exhibition in the near future? Absolutely! In 2019. Watch this space. This year I deliberately chose not to do any solos after a string of consecutive solos last year which put a lot of pressure on me and subsequently decided that 2018 will be a time to play and just create without that pressure of working towards a deadline. I have been buried in my new studio instead and taken my time working on bigger pieces- it has been deeply satisfying. Sometimes one needs to take a step back in order to take two forward.

It is within the well-rehearsed, well-memorized and often noted “male dominated industry” of gallery and exhibition spaces that it becomes important to stand back and acknowledge the Eclectica Galleries. Too often there is a recognition of need for change or shifting the quotas and representations in various industries but not often enough is there support for those trying. “I’m leaving evidence. And you got to leave evidence too. And your children got to leave evidence… We got to keep it as visible as our blood”. (Jones 1975)

At Eclectica Galleries the team is largely womxn-run, led by the formidable and brilliant Shamiela Tyer. Shamiela Tyer remains the only woman-of-colour gallery director, that I know of, in Cape Town and leads a team of womxn staff. Together the team has been growing the gallery group from a single space to four distinct and impactful contemporary galleries in Cape Town’s CBD over just three and a half years. Initially starting a small antique gallery in Chelsea, Wynberg seven years ago, Shamiela has been collecting art since she was 19 and has an incredible collection of art, design pieces and antique furniture. Her knowledge of aesthetics and notions of value is rich and exuberant and her generosity is endlessly amazing to me, with her time, patience, space and intentions. The Cape Town CBD galleries have been built up to grow rapidly, hosting over 15 exhibitions yearly across the four spaces of Eclectica Contemporary, Eclectica Design and Art, Eclectica Print and Eclectica Collection. The gallery group has exhibited in various local art fairs and will be attending AKAA in Paris later this year, continuing to encourage and promote narratives from and of the African continent. The Eclectica Galleries are growing, building, expanding and leaving visible evidence, exploring crucial stories and representations of bodies and identities who are often seen as tools for a checklist, rather than as insightful and necessary existences.

The galleries’ exhibition plan and focus to constantly bring in new ideas is reflected in the work of artists from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Egypt, DRC, Zambia and even Germany and the United States of America. The practice of seeking and exploring new perspectives and to support emerging artists rings true in the exhibitions produced and the artists that are invited in. of the planning and working, with five solo exhibitions by women artists taking place from August to November, including a womxn-only exhibition at Eclcectica Print earlier this year. The gallery is currently supporting Femme Projects by hosting a donations drive for art supplies in support of a camp and workshop they will be hosting later this year. On each of the group exhibitions, there has been a focus on accessing new womxn artists and finding new voices to include into the often-exclusive art scene. For the month of September,
Eclectica Contemporary will host Nina Holmes, for her solo exhibition Un|safe and Eclectica Collection will exhibit Leila Fanner’s solo Ceremony for the Soul. During the month of August, Georgia Lane exhibited her solo In this Time and in October, Eclectica Contemporary will welcome Japanese, Joburg-based artist Asuka Nirasawa for her highly anticipated solo exhibition. In November, the Eclectica Collection invited artist is Kara Taylor, an American-born artist and gallerist who has been working in South Africa over the past two years. She presents her body of work titled Everything I have seen and heard for the month of November. At this year’s FNB Joburg Art Fair, Eclectica Contemporary will show Leila Fanner’s work alongside Hussein Salim and Lars Fischedick, in conversation as to

how the work is singularly striking and yet also complementary paired amongst other artists. The galleries that fall under the Eclectica name resound and vibrate with constant change, yet remain singular in the focus of encouragement, support and accessibility for a wider notion of inclusivity. The galleries function as exhibition spaces but also welcome discussion, engagement, workshopping and interaction. With nine womxn involved in the day to day running, the conversation changes and allows for new narratives to be accessed. This, I am sure, is cause and a call for celebration. T
here is something exquisitely, almost painfully, expressed in the very painterliness of Nigatu Tsehay’s work that quite simply takes one’s breath away. No photograph, indeed no other medium of art (and Tsehay does work in other media, for example animation) could, in my view, possibly convey the complex and dense emotional energy that one finds in his paintings. Each appears to be a tightly wound spring that at any time could unwind and release its embedded force. Looking at them, one is immediately struck by the tautness of their composition; the psychological tension each one wields and the patent ability of the artist to convey a great deal in his brushstrokes whilst still leaving us with profound questions once we drag ourselves away from the canvas, still reeling from the residual (and metaphorical) punch in the solar plexus that each one delivers. It is easy to seek out comparisons with other artists (Frank Auerbach and Francis Bacon leap to mind) but Tsehay’s style of expression is uniquely his own and emanates from his life experiences having grown up in Ethiopia, studying at the remarkable School of Fine Art and Design at Addis Ababa University and subsequently living and working in Germany. That school’s rigorous training in technical skill and the ability to represent the human form shines through, but there is also something of the solemnly playful, incisive introspection and social commentary that one finds in the German Expressionists, for example, that seems to be at play here. One grasps for clues to the source of his style but it is clear that it is one that has emerged from his own experience, wisdom and daily existence as a twenty-first century African living in Europe.

“Looking at them, one is immediately struck by the tautness of their composition; the psychological tension each one wields” Although his figures seem somehow immobilised, static and inactive, they are clearly imbued with considerable pent-up energy and vigour. His characters are very much alive (and sometimes he juxtaposes them with fragments of lifeless dummies just to make the point more clear). This energy also conveys a deep empathy with the people he represents; we are under no illusions that these are human beings for which the artist cares deeply. The passion (and compassion) displayed by Tsehay is, it

sometimes seems, at odds with the way that humanity has become commodified, hypedup and repackaged for easy consumption by the information society of today’s world. Here we have a savvy and thoughtful observer of the fractures that occur between the human and the way that is re-packaged and broadcast over endless streams, channels and platforms in our hyper-globalised and digitized society. – Andrew Lamprecht.

n September 2017, seven artists from different countries arrived in Venice to partake in a printmaking workshop. These individuals would soon bond with each other in a professional printing studio that form part Scuola Internazionale di Grafica Venezia. As a group they would bring with them a rich mixture of cultures, ages, races and experience. In the spirit of the Biennale, evenings were spent around an Open Table (Tavola Aperta). As printmakers they discovered what inspired and drew them in, resulting in a feeling of connectedness that would seem perfectly fit for the 57 Venice Biennale’s theme of Viva Arte Viva. The Printmakers of Venice Exhibition is all about artmaking, laughter, friendship and fun. Of all the secrets and talents they have, the most divine is the humour they share.

osendal Art and Framing is delighted to announce the first of what will become an annual small printmaking competition for both experienced and emerging artists. The gallery exhibits art from southern Africa with special focus on works on paper, including all graphic and printmaking techniques. There will be a first prize of R10Â 000 cash sponsored by Compcare Wellness Medical Aid Scheme and a second and third paper prize of Fabriano Rosapina 285g paper sponsored by Prime Art & Graphics. The world of printmaking is a uniquely rich method of artistic expression by the transferring of images - while at the same time developing unique characteristics. The aim is to encourage artists to explore the miniature print format and provides them with an opportunity of exhibiting . All miniature prints will be exhibited. It is also an opportunity for artists and the public to view the current concerns and trends of printmakers from South Africa. The idea behind the printmaking competition is to support, preserve and to advance the art of the original print and the connection between printmakers. It is the perfect opportunity to develop the printmakers network within the graphic art world. Printmaking today is what it is because of that tradition , and that is why a lot of new and talented artists have found their niche in printmaking. The call is therefore for work that have been made using any traditional printmaking technique, such as woodcut, etching, lithography, screen printing, monotypes and so forth. Art must be hand-pulled and generated using traditional printmaking methods. Computer generated art will not be eligible. Work must have been completed within the past two years, and not have received a prize before. Editions of one, that is 1/1 , such as in the case of mono-prints, will be accepted.
A hand-made print is created by the artist who prepares the print using a variety of methods depending on the type of print involved. It is not a finished piece of artwork that is copied and printed by mechanical means. Each artist may submit up to four (4) entries on a paper size of 200mm x 200mm (20cm x 20cm).The print size must be 100mm x 100mm (10cm x 10cm) exactly. The square format was uncommon in art until the advent of abstraction and presents distinct challenges of composition and expression. The prints will be exhibited at Rosendal Art and Framing in Durbanville from 27 November 2018 to 20 December 2018 from 08.30 – 17.30 Monday to Friday and 10.00 to 13.00 on Saturdays. n September 2018, three South African artists – Julia Cavalieri, Sue Martin and Sharon Sampson – will present their individual collections in a collaborative exhibition entitled Illusion/Allusion.
Sharon echoes the alchemy theme…“I believe there is an alchemy between print and oil paintings,” she says. “I work on several paintings at any one time. The prints ignite the canvasses, the canvasses feed off each other. Inspiration for one painting might be found in another – a thread of narrative emerges.” Julia, Sue and Sharon will be launching Illusion/ Allusion on 12 September 2018 at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) in Illovo, Johannesburg. The official opening will be followed on subsequent days by a series of talks from the likes of Jeremy Sampson (a.k.a. The Brandfather). “Each of us is fascinated in our own way with spaces,” says Julia. “In Illusion/Allusion we present our personal points of view on the concept of creating, inhabiting and retreating into spaces.” The artists have focused on creating a form of super-exhibition that’s made up of three solo installations. “The working title for our collaboration is Solo x 3,” explains Sue. “There’s an alchemical quality to the works that allows them to be seen as separate, but together – almost like there’s some form of magic taking place as you make your way from one artwork to the next.”

Julia Cavalieri is to a large extent a selftaught artist. Graduating with a law degree in South Africa, she spent years working in Paris in a corporate environment. It was only on her return to Johannesburg, that she moved into the art world and is now painting and sculpting full time. Julia prefers to work on large canvasses, predominantly using oils and mixed media. Exploring sculpture as a new medium, her Illusion/Allusion installation is central to her new body of work called Shadow Nests comprising clay figures encased in organic Perspex shapes. Julia’s paintings are projections of the subconscious, the allusion of a very private space – an inner nest moulded by an outside world. “Julia paints not to make pictures, but to use paint as a poet uses words, to put before us and to invite us into, a ‘place’ of special experience.” – Ricky Burnett. Sue Martin completed her Fine Arts degree at the University of Natal Pietermaritzburg before moving to Johannesburg in the early 1980s. Her work incorporates various media, including painting, printmaking and photography. Her subject matter is fundamentally about figures within a landscape, walking or floating above, together or alone. Part of her current work, Lie of the Land, incorporates the printed word that has either been cut-and-pasted or painted onto the surface, which she sees as being as important as the image itself. Sue’s growing passion for this process has led her to explore the spatial considerations within a painting even further, laying down words or marks and then pushing them into the distance, layering not only different surfaces but also meanings. The process is a work in progress that has its own journey, much like the people who feature so prominently in her work.

“It’s not about making a painting but rather about making space,” she says. Sharon Sampson graduated in fine art and graphic design at what was then known as Natal Technikon. She subsequently embarked on an award-winning international career in advertising. She now specialises in oil painting and printmaking across numerous techniques. In Illusion/Allusion, Sharon’s works are presented as oil paintings and prints. Her most recent body of work – Evocation, Sharon revisits the human form, exploring the human body’s relationship with its surroundings and space. The intermingling of lustrous inks and oils provides the perfect platform to express the ebb and flow of human relationships, encapsulating the act of bringing or recalling a feeling, memory or image to mind.

lare Menck is the festival artist of the Tulbagh Arts Festival taking place from 28 to 30 September.
She will also curate an exhibition at Saronsberg Cellar where the existing gallery space has recently been expanded. This exhibition, titled “SECOND TAKE” will showcase the work of 26 artists represented in the Saronsberg collection. Clare has approached each artist for a new “conversation piece” to enter into dialogue with their work currently in the collection. The idea is that the new work should not be too similar, but that a comparative chord will be struck through contrast versus similarity. This could perhaps be a then-and-now look at the artist’s output. Participating artists are

Clare will also hold a cameo solo exhibition at the Epi-Art gallery, 10 Church Street, during the festival. Clare’s work explores water and the inevitable existential experience thereof. Water as subject is prevalent in her work. She is a figurative painter and printmaker known for her bathers and nudes, with retro themes revisited occasionally. Her love of colour and the human figure have become apparent over years of semi-autobiographical exploration. She has, however, diversified into the mediums of clay ceramic sculpture and painting on ceramics. The Tulbagh Arts Festival features several solo exhibitions in and around the historical Church Street as well as on wine estates like Schalkenbosch, where a “studio sale” exhibition in The Barn promises to bring well-known names to the public at reasonable prices.

Sotheby’s – a blue chip name, listed on the New York Stock Exchange – gives credibility to this market on a global scale.” With its first two sales Sotheby’s achieved outstanding results for artists in this field, breaking over 35 artist records and attracting collectors from 33 countries across 6 continents. The most recent sale saw over half of lots selling above their high estimates and set fourteen auction records; most notably Nigerian master Ben Enwonwu’s ‘Africa Dances’ which soared above its presale estimate, realising £187,500/$265,744 (est.£20,000–30,000). The sale also saw stellar results from artists from the Democratic Republic of Congo, including the young Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga, whose Mangbetu achieved £65,000/$92,124 against a pre-sale estimate of £8,000-12,000, and Bodys Isek Kingelez’s Base King, which stormed past its pre-sale estimate of £10,000-15,000, selling for £42,500/$60,235. Kingelez will return to Sotheby’s this October with another intricate ‘maquette’ entitled, New Wax (est. £20,000-30,000). The artist, who passed away in 2015, is the subject of a large scale retrospective, on view at MoMa until 1 January 2019.

This October, Sotheby’s presents a selection of works from across the African continent, featuring standout pieces by leading artists in this category, including El Anatsui, Ibrahim El-Salahi, Chéri Samba, Ouattara Watts, David Goldblatt, Kudzanai Chiurai, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Kader Attia and Marlene Dumas. Following on from William Kentridge’s sellout performance of ‘The Head & the Load’ at the Tate Modern this July in London, commemorating the African involvement in the First World War, Sotheby’s is pleased to present the artist’s ‘Kinetic sculpture’ (est. £70,000-90,000). The work is constructed out of found objects: the wheels and chain from a bicycle, a megaphone, a tripod and rulers. This animated sculpture by Kentridge draws on the ready-mades of Marcel Duchamp, demonstrating the artist’s process of reclaiming old objects for new uses. Sotheby’s also has the pleasure of offering Gavin Jantjes’s seminal work ‘A South African Colouring Book’ (est.£40,000-60,000), a set of 11 screen-prints made up of collages of photographs, newsprint, drawings and sections of handwritten text. Each one is titled with the instruction ‘Colour me…’, referring to

the discrimination based on race that occurred in South Africa at the hands of Apartheid. The artist combined personal details such as his ID pass, identifying him as ‘Cape Coloured’ and elements from current affairs, such as financial market reports, cultural texts and photographs by the photographer Ernest Cole, who recorded the toil of black South Africans during the 1960s. Other editions of Jantjes’s work are held in significant museum collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and Tate in London, and The South African National Gallery in Cape Town. house Sotheby’s. The performance of such flagship works at auction can artificially skew the picture of what is happening in the market at a deeper level. For one thing, these eight and nine figure prices are only really possible for works consigned by museums or large art institutions, though there is a small elite of high net worth individuals who compete to acquire these rare works at auction.

he business of investing in art for financial return is a notoriously tricky one. While many contend with some justification that art is not an investment asset class in the same way as stocks or bonds are, it is also possible to view the art market as a financial instrument, and trade in art as an investment asset. ArtPrice reported recently that the global auction turnover on fine art rose 18% in the half year to June 2018, totalling $8.45 billion. The market grew on all continents, with a massive 48% increase in turnover in the USA, to $3.3 billion. The other major markets followed suit, with $2 billion in turnover in China, which is a relatively isolated market, and turnover up 18% in the UK to $1.9 billion. A note of caution should be sounded about this growth from an investment viewpoint, however. A whopping 46% of this turnover growth is accounted for by the modern art segment, and was led by works by Picasso and Modigliani, both scoring results of over $100 million for globally dominant auction

While much rides on the performance of these works at auction, it also detracts from the fact that healthy growth exists at lower price points, which in turn points to a resilience in the market for investing in art.
Globally, the average value of artworks in the historic, modern and contemporary segments has averaged a 25% increase. The attractive returns on art over the last few years have outperformed many other investments and the art market has become an independent, liquid and efficient market on all continents. Along the way it has resisted the fallout from global crises such as 9/11 and the financial crash of 2007-8, proving its resilience. The consistent growth in the art market over the last 20 years has also been fuelled by other factors. There has been a rapid increase in the art-buying population from roughly 500,000 after 1945 to approximately 90 million in 2018; there has also been a significant reduction in the average age of market players, including

buyers, and a major geographical expansion of the market to nearly all of Asia, the Pacific Rim, India, South Africa, the Middle-East and South America. As Artprice also points out, another massive market driver is the way in which the museum industry had changed. More museums opened between 2000 and 2014 than in the previous two centuries – some 700 new museums per year! In South Africa, while obviously on a much smaller scale, the same process has gone on, with the recent opening of the Zeitz MOCAA museum and the Norval foundation in the Cape, and the impending opening of the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria. While it is too early to tell in the South African market, we might expect the same effect as has been the case worldwide – that the hunger of museums for top-quality works will be a driver of growth. Globally, the average value of artworks in the historic, modern and contemporary segments has averaged a 25%
increase. The contemporary segment on its own has averaged an 88% increase! While this does not only refer to ‘star’ artists, since there has been an average annual yield of +9% on works above $20 000, Aspire has seen spectacular performances for better-known signatures. A world record of R1 932 560 was realised in November 2017 for Mythological Rider (1970) by Sydney Kumalo, and a South African record price of R5 456 640 was fetched for a William Kentridge drawing, Drawing from Mine (Soho with coffee plunger and cup) (1991), both in November last year. Kentridge also features on Aspire’s upcoming auction sale in October, with another of the drawings for projection, Drawing from Stereoscope (Double page, Soho in two rooms) (1999). The auction company will hope to capitalise on Kentridge’s stellar profile in the wake of his critically accalimed performances of The Head and the Load at the Tate in London this year.

Visitors to the Art Hub will be able to view a selection of works consigned for Strauss & Co’s upcoming sales in October (Cape Town) and November (Johannesburg). The exhibition will also include highlights from the company’s second standalone Contemporary Art Auction, scheduled to take place in February 2019 in Cape Town.

Engaging with artist Jonel Scholtz When I met you in the early 2000â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, I was drawn to your work because I could see your distinct style, use of colour and talent. Those days you mainly painted soft interiors that invited the viewer to sit down and take a moment to reflect. If I look at your work today - what an amazing privilege it has been to be apart of your journey. Q You are always connected to your work and currently you are focused on mainly figures and nude studies. How did this come about? A I am in a period of reflecting and healing and I think it comes through in the work as I try to celebrate woman, their beauty as well as their strength. With my figure studies I depict a moment from the past and drag it back into the present. This serves as a metaphor for an experience or feeling that made me grow. I analise my life, mistakes and victories, by painting figures. Nudes are a wonderful way to let feelings meet. Vulnerability and self confidence; beauty and flaws; honesty and secrets. Q You have over the last two decades, used the same colour palette. Your tonal values moved to the subdued, resulting in a more sophisticated work A Wow, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a long time to reflect, leaves one exposed - a lot like my current works. Tonal values for me speaks to mood, it definitely helped me getting the message or connection across. I think it gives me the opportunity to highlight a growth in self-worth that comes with age, belief and confidence in who we are. I find Jonel to be a great spirit to be around. I always feel her energy and her love of life. She is one of those people who influence who you are. Always a great pleasure to have her and her work in the gallery.

KEYES ART MILE
Innovative art, design, food and more at Joburg’s Keyes Art Mile Johannesburg’s Keyes Art Mile, situated in the ever-expanding commercial and residential suburb of Rosebank, is fast becoming the art and design darling of the city. Known for its hub of galleries, shops and restaurants, as well as the regular Pantry Markets, Art and Design Saturdays, and Talking Art events, the Keyes Art Mile has become a popular hangout for Jozi’s young and old. If you’re not yet familiar with Keyes, here’s a rundown of what’s on offer. By Dave Mann
SHOPS Shelflife was first founded in Cape Town as a streetwear store. 10 years later, they opened their second physical store on the Keyes Art Mile. Shelflife are perhaps best known for their sneakers and clothing, but they also stock a wide range of graffiti and street art products, as well as books and magazines on the artform.
Okapi produces and sells high-quality, locally designed products, the majority of which are artisanal handbags and clutches. Founded by the painter Hanneli Rupert, Okapi has a global presence, and its store on Keyes is a standout on the strip. On the design front, True Design provides a wide range of bespoke dĂŠcor and interior design items through Kartell and Cassina, two stores under the True Design umbrella. Interior design-lovers can also browse the showroom of Anatomy Design, which focusses on bespoke products with crafted detailing. A vacant showroom reserved for pop-up stores and activations also sits along Keyes and has been home to various fashion and art-related pop-ups featuring emerging and established local designers and artists.

RESTAURANTS If you’re looking for a quick bite, BGR churns out burgers, fries, milkshakes and more. Their build-your-own burgers, however, are the main attraction. And if you’re in the mood for a sitdown meal, Milkbar is a firm favourite. Known for their great coffee and locally-inspired menu, Milkbar also has a well-stocked bar and regularly hosts live music events that spill out of their doors and onto the street.

“Situated in the everexpanding commercial and residential suburb of Rosebank, is fast becoming the art and design darling of the city.” If you’re more of a luxurious wine-and-dine type, the Trumpet Building’s own Marble restaurant should do the trick. The restaurant boasts an open-fire grill overseen by top SA chef David Higgs, lavish design, fine artworks from a host of local artists, and a balcony that’s perfect for sundowners. And if you’re at Keyes so often that you’re practically a member, consider joining The MESH Club, a curated member’s club for entrepreneurs. But if members clubs aren’t your thing, you can always head through to their bar for after work drinks and bespoke cocktails.

GALLERIES In terms of galleries, SMAC is one of the highlights of the Keyes Art Mile. The gallery, which also has spaces in Stellenbosch, and Cape Town, has hosted a variety of shows from its collection of artists, including Asha Zero, Marlene Steyn, and Georgina Gratrix. The space is currently relocating to another venue within the Trumpet Building and is set to re-open this month. SMAC also features an impressive number of publications on sale at the front desk and their Saturday morning openings, which are never without a steady supply of mimosas, are also an excellent way to begin your day.

A building that’s been witness to the rapid change of Keyes and surrounds, Everard Read is something of a landmark in the area, having celebrated its centenary in 2013. In the late 70s, the gallery left the city centre, where it was first built, and established its new premises on the corner of Keyes and Jellicoe. The space itself is grand – vast rooms with high ceilings, wooden floors, and a number of secret gardens which see the gallery’s sculpture works spilling out onto the grass. Many will know the large-scale sculptures that occupy the top of Keyes, which also belong to the gallery, courtesy of artists such as Norman Catherine and Brett Murray.

Trumpet Building and Circa Gallery
Just across the way from Everard Read is its partner gallery, CIRCA. One of the most wellphotographed galleries in the city, CIRCA has been called one of Joburg’s best examples of innovative architectural design. The gallery is split up into a small exhibition and front desk space on the ground floor, while its spiral walkway leads towards an expansive exhibition space further up. On the top of the gallery, which looks out onto a bustling main road and a view of the leafy suburbs, is another small gallery space which is used for workshops and lectures. Lastly, you’ll find the newest and most exciting addition inside the Trumpet Building:

The Mixed Reality Workshop, or TMRW for short. The space was established to make existing, immersive and interactive digital technology more broadly accessible to both artists and audiences. The best example of this was Mary Sibande’s exhibition, A Crescendo of Ecstasy which opened earlier this year. Through a collaboration with Digital Foundry, Sibande’s well-known work ‘The purple shall govern’ was both expanded upon and given new life through a blend of installation and virtual reality.
