This collection was to be part of the Melbourne Affordable Art Fair, which sadly has been postponed until 2022. Instead we believe it’s only FAIR that we SHARE it with you. We hope you find some joy and happiness in this collection and help to support our local artists during these trying times.
KATE FLORENCE
What gets you up in the morning? Depends how i’m feeling, it’s usually coffee, and the excitement of the fact I’m living a life I love and am excited to get on with my day of creating! Who’s your favourite living artist? Its impossible to choose one, I have so many. I love Grayson Perry, and performance artist Marina Abramović and right now im obsessing over the dutch painter Peggy Kuiper.
Whats your star sign? I am a cancer sun, Leo rising and Capricorn moon. This is a combination I love, my cancer sun means I’m soft and sensitive, I wear my emotions on my sleeve, I feel it deeply then I move on (or try to lol). Cancers are naturally very nurturing and hospitable, I love caring for people and cooking for my loved ones. My Leo rising is my very extroverted side, where my loud bubbly and fiery side can be found. My Capricorn moon is my work ethic, I am very driven and hard working and love to get shit done! Sometimes it’s great and sometimes I need to know when to stop and let myself rest, I have very high expectations for myself.

What really makes you happy? FOOOOD, most of all sitting down to eat with my nearest and dearest humans, cooking is another creative outlet and expression for me and I can never be bored of eating.
What’s the strangest job you’ve ever had? It was back home in the UK when I was 15, I used to be driven out into a field and left in a trailer to scoop ice cream for people walking their dogs. I would sit there for 8 hours until someone came to collect me, i used to feed cones to the donkey and horses who would be walking past, at the time it felt totally normal, but now it feels hilarious.

CHRISTINE MINTER Who is your favourite living artist? Colin Pennock, an abstract Artist from Noosa. I adore his soft landscapes, the texture and life in his paintings. I could gaze at them forever. What is your proudest accomplishment? My son Harry. I nearly didn’t get to be a Mum. I struggled on the IVF programme for a number of years and then we finally got lucky. What really makes you happy? Where possible I try to deliver my artwork in person. I really love to see my clients reaction when they receive the work. It is so fulfilling to experience that pleasure.

JESSIE FEITOSA What is the first movie you ever saw? The first movie I’ve ever seen was probably a Disney movie or something, but the one that I remember going to the movies and seeing (when I was 8 years old) was the movie Titanic – and I felt all the feels. What really makes you happy? My creative flow and the process of painting brings me so much joy. It makes me really happy. When I start getting annoyed or complain, more often than not it’s because I need to paint – and my husband knows that and says maybe go paint.

What is your biggest fear? I feel all the emotions from the things that I watch and I’d say my biggest fear is scary movies, or a lot of the time the news reports or bad news really play on my mind and it affects my creative flow. What gets you up in the morning? Honestly it’s my art that gets me up in the morning. Besides my two year old daughter, one of the first things that I think about every morning is my art, and it’s the last thing that I think about when I go to bed. It’s my passion.
Who’s your favourite living artist? One of my favourite artists is Prudence Caroline. I love her colourful fluid like artwork. About 4 years ago I drove from Adelaide to Melbourne to do her painting workshop and it was so worth it because it planted a seed in me that this is something that I really wanted... to be an artist.

MARTHA LORD About ‘Shimazu Gozen’ Titled female Samurai from the Shimazu clan I have depicted this unnamed Onna-Musha as a modern day unassuming warrior. The Onna-Musha lived within warring cultures in pre-modern Japan. These women engaged in battle alongside Samurai men and acquired indispensable skills in martial arts, archery and horse riding. They not only defended the household, family and honour in times of war but took part in offensive battles. They were considered members of the Bushi Samurai class and were just as courageous and capable as their male counterparts.

What is your biggest fear? PUBLIC SPEAKING and being the centre of attention. I want my work to shine and be the focus. Not ME. Speaking in front of a crowd terrifies me. And I hate being photographed too. If only I could be anonymous like Banksy....and as successful. What is the strangest job you’ve had? Working in a genetics lab at La Trobe University in the 80s part of my work required me to anaesthetise drosophila (fruit flies) and paint a coloured dot on to their thorax so that each fly could be identified in experiments. Valuable research at the end of the day. What is your favourite thing about being an artist? Art is in my soul, in my heart and in my head. It has always been and always will be. Despite the many challenges, both financially as well as creatively at times, the fact that I am in control of my own destiny (or so I think), I decide what I create and the very thought that my art will be around way past I have departed this earth is an incredible feeling. I am so grateful to those who appreciate what I do.

NADIA DÜSSELBERG What’s your star sign? Gemini sun. Scorpio moon. Libra rising. If you know anything about astrology, you’ll know I’m a good damn head case. What really makes you happy? I love anything metaphysical... Tarot, crystals, ghosts, energy, channeling, manifestation, you name it. I am very connected to my own spirituality and use it in my art everyday. What is something people may not know about you? I am one of those ultra sensitive people in all areas of my life, including food. I have over 10+ intolerances and an allergy that requires an Epipen. Urg it’s a sore spot but I need to stop apologising for it.

What did you do before you became an artist? I worked as a prop buyer/dresser/decorator in Melbourne’s TV and film industry for over 10 years. I then started a boutique ceramics label called Bear and Bone. Believe it or not, it was the day after getting a hot tip from a psychic medium that i first picked up a brush. What is the hardest thing you’ve ever had to do? Around that time was one of the hardest chapters of my life. I was met with equal parts of support and judgment. I was lucky enough to be surrounded by those who help space for me while I was slowly building myself up from the void. I am also grateful to myself for being (weirdly) fiercely protective of my artist potential.

KATE QUINN What is the strangest job you’ve had? I trained as a social worker and when I was in my 20’s I lived in the UK, and worked at a sexual health/ relationships clinic for young people. Whenever the young people came to an appointment, they saw the counsellor (me). It was my job to teach them all how to put on condoms. I had a big box of erect plastic penises next to my chair, in different skin tones, and would need to place one of them in my lap to do the condom demonstration! It was certainly one of the most awkward work roles I have had, and produced many funny moments!

Do you have a nickname? Yes, most of my friends call me Quinny! Even my teachers at high school used to call me Quinny. What is your favourite thing about being an artist? When I find ‘flow’. I love it when I get absorbed in a painting, and time passes by so fast because I am completely consumed by the technical creative task I am immersed in. Psychologists say this state of flow is really good for mental health, and I can see why! I feel so great when I have found flow for a few hours - but I can’t always achieve it if a painting isn’t going very well.

Who is your favourite living artist? Ben Quilty, not just for his powerful and evocative work but because he is an artist with incredible social and political conscience and humility, who is motivated to speak out on behalf of people who are significantly marginalised and ill-treated in this world. What is your favourite thing about being an artist? Art making is so much about exploring and getting to the essence of who you are. It’s an incredible position to be in each day. Everything I do in the day feeds my art making in one way or another, consciously and unconsciously.

SARAH ROWE What gets you up in the morning? I’m usually full of ideas. I very rarely write them down so it’s a case of whatever I happen to remember is what will be on the agenda for the day (I keep a very loose schedule) Ideas get me up in the morning. The excitement of trying out something new whether it be a technique, a colour combination or a weird medium. I delight in not knowing where an untrodden path will lead. What is your favourite thing about being an artist? It’s very flexible, working for yourself. I like that. Having three school aged children, it has meant I can be there when I need to for them. I also like that I’m the boss of me. I can work and rest when it suits me.

What really makes you happy? It sounds boring but I’m really appreciating having a good routine at the moment. Lockdown is so challenging but I’m enjoying maintaining little daily rituals - making sure I get out of the house each day, having one thing to accomplish each day (but otherwise keeping my expectations pretty low), and just trying to appreciate little things. What is your favourite thing about being an artist? I love being self-employed and having the freedom to structure my days as I need. It’s also been really wonderful to have to prioritise creativity and inspiration in my daily life. It’s definitely helped me stay sane through such a difficult time and to focus on more positive things.
