I’m also very proud to present a photojournalism article by one of our own team members, photographer Marco Zanotti, who takes us on a tour to Ferrara and introduces us to his hometown through his lens, with an amazing selection of images from his book “This Land of Marks”. Don’t miss this article! Our cover story features exclusive content: an interview with the brilliant fine art photographer, Suzanne Duncan, whose breathtaking work made the front cover of this issue. “Life is a wonderful endless journey… if you know how to live it.” Lorenzo Quinn’s work focuses on humanity and life’s energy. For Quinn, sculpture is primarily an art of communication; he enjoys making his work’s meaning clear, so it can sometimes be months until his finished product is revealed. His masterful sculptures are visually symbolic pieces that represent our journey through life, filled with joy, fear, insecurities and a wide array of emotions. Calling Lorenzo Quinn an accomplished sculptor and artist would be an understatement. His masterful sculptures are visually symbolic pieces that represent our journey through life, filled with joy, fear, insecurities and a wide array of emotions, they evoke in the viewer the need to search beyond the physical realm and into the spiritual. Born from the union of Mexican-American actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Lolanda Addolori, Lorenzo belonged to a world that stretched from the United States to Italy. His love for art was fostered by his father as a child and he

18

followed that path into adulthood when he attended the American Academy of Fine Arts. It was there that he realized his passion for a specific art form, sculpture. He decided that sculpting allowed him to better display his originality and energy. In 1988, Quinn married Giovanna Cicutto; shortly after that, he and his wife decided to leave the hardened city of New York and move to Spain, because Quinn felt Spain's family values would better benefit his growing family. The spirit of artists could

also be felt in the city to which so many other artists of Spanish heritage had come before him. Despite a brief stint as an actor in his twenties, Quinn decided to focus solely on sculpting. His work focuses on everyday emotions and life’s energy. For Quinn, sculpture is primarily an art of communication; he enjoys making his work’s meaning clear, so it can sometimes be months until his finished product is revealed. Quinn has a unique way of working, preferring to find inspiration by writing poetry. He begins with a poem whenever he makes his sculptures. By doing so, he creates a three-dimensional poem about, for example, a flower growing, instead of a model of a flower. Anyone wanting to see Quinn's works would be able to find plenty of pieces in private collections around the

world, but some have also been featured in international exhibits and monumental installations within the past 20 years. His work, “The Tree of Life,” produced for the United Nations, was published on a stamp issued by the organization in 1993, and in 1994, the Vatican commissioned him to create a sculpture of Saint Anthony that was blessed by the Pope in St Peter’s Square, Rome, in front of a crowd of 35,000. The sculpture resides in the Basilica del Santo in the city of Padova. If you want to see some of his public art, try looking across from the Museum of Modern Art in Palma de Mallorca, Spain for his piece “Encounters” (2003), a massive globe enclosing a pointing hand, or in Birmingham, you can find the “Tree of Life,” which the stamp was modeled on. ARTTOUR INTERNATIONAL FALL 2015

Michael Lam Spontaneous Strokes With A New York Line by Viviana Puello

Michael Lam elevates the human spirit through simple yet powerful images and compositions that evoke feelings of peaceful harmony, spiritual simplicity, and freedom. As a small child, Lam was enchanted by ancient calligraphy characters he discovered in a Chinese herbal medicine book. His present works reflect that experience. Each painting is infused with both motion and emotion as he explores the nature of the individual and of life. Rather than a realistic representation of what he sees, his works are an emotional self-expression in which the brush strokes correspond with the complexity of the physical world, allowing the spontaneity of the ink to flow with the nature of the universe. A common theme in Lam’s work is the interplay of light and dark, through which he explores concepts of opposites such as good and evil and balancing the yin and the yang. Though Lam’s paintings generally tend to be monochromatic, he creates texture with varying concentrations of ink. The result is a fluid image that guides viewers through his story. As a skilled, self-taught artist, Lam has been acclaimed as a master of single stroke painting, a technique in which an entire painting is created with a single brush stroke, he has devoted many years of his life to the development of a good understanding of the properties of paper, ink and brush, and the application of pressure and speed. As his works have evolved and become more complex, he continues mastering this technique, inspiring viewers as he illuminates the emotional elements of his subjects. Lam’s art has often been referred to as representing a “New York Line” due to his strong line technique; however, to appreciate Lam’s work, one must transcend beyond the superficial manifestation of his

excellent technical skills to understand the spiritual freedom of his art, which focuses on the spontaneous nature of the universe. Two important messages in his works are that everything in the world has a natural state and that one should strive to attain a state of complete spontaneity in order to become what nature intended. During his creative process, Lam’s masterful skills allow the ink to take on a natural life of its own, emphasizing the unity of the self and nature, implying a freedom from worldly complications, and providing inspiration, enlightenment, and the consciousness of spiritual liberation.

YAYOI KUSAMA: Between A Dot And An Art Place by Cody LaVadaWith a career that has spanned nearly six decades and continues to stretch onward into the future - and which has certainly inspired some of the most well-known artists of our time - the Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama has been referenced multiple times as,quite possibly, the most influential living female artist ever. In a arena typically dominated by men such as Van Gogh, Warhol, Picasso and the like, Kusama stands out as an epic keystone – the very foundations atop which so many modern artists built their creations. Her successes spread across many fields, including film, performance art, literature, fashion, sculpture and installations. With such a burgeoning repertoire, she holds many accolades and accomplishments that also help her to stand out as a giant among artists. Born on March 22, 1929 in Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan, Kusama was the fourth child in a wealthy merchant family that made its living selling seedling nurseries. Her childhood was rife with complications, including physical abuse at the hands of her mother, witnessing the infidelities of her father, and severe mental health complications, such as visual and aural hallucinations, severe obsessive and suicidal thoughts, and fixations that Freud would have a field day with. In 1948, Kusama took up senior classes at Kyoto Municipal School of Arts & Crafts to hone her life-long love of art and creating, which she claims helped her to erase the misery of her early years by transporting her to a happier place. Despite having graduated the following year, she explains that she felt great disdain toward the rigid structure of the Nihonga style of painting that she was taught. The “master-disciple” tradition by which students develop their talents through close work with the sensei was not for her, and she sought to expose the world to her originality. When asked about her time in Kyoto, she claims that she feels like vomiting. Cont. Next Page.

ARTTOUR INTERNATIONAL FALL 2015

Over time, Kusama taught herself the arts of cubism, abstraction and surrealism, incorporating her own unique spins on the classic styles, implementing the obscuring polka dots that had been an integral part of her artistic works since her childhood years. The oldest example of this motif of Kusama's is a drawing from when the artist was ten which depicts a Japanese woman, presumed to be her own mother, nearly obliterated by the enormous polka dots. Even all of these years, this particular style still finds its way into her pieces, and has since become her trademark. Capitalizing on both her love of art and her ability to churn out fascinating pieces with surprising speed, Kusama began exhibiting her works in Japan and receiving critical acclaim and interest from the public. However, her wanderlust drew her

to the teeming metropolis of New York City; with its bohemian ideals and artistic freedom, it seemed to be an antithesis to her strict native Japan. Following a long correspondence with Georgia O'Keeffe, which Kusama had initiated after buying and being inspired by a book of O'Keeffe's artwork, Kusama set out for the Big Apple to continue her career, where she would spend over 15 years. At the age of 27, in 1958, she began her American endeavors. Due to severe political stringency, Japanese travelers had many restrictions, including the amount of currency they were allowed to bring out of the country, to dissuade them from leaving. Always the ingenious opportunist, Kusama sewed bills into the lining of her clothes and conquered the city, convincing a small gallery to stage an exhibition of her work. However, she soon fell on hard times: her meager apartment was unheated, and she describes winters as being brutal – “a living hell,” though she stayed up all night sometimes, painting to keep warm and to exorcise the demons of her mind and expel the creative fervor raging inside. “A Sacred Place Down Under”

Inside The Cathedral Of Salt In Zipaquirá by Disha Sanghvi

Within the unassuming little city of Zipaquirá lies one of the most enthralling marvels of Colombian architecture - the Salt Cathedral. However, many literature lovers are attracted due to its connection with the world famous author, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The university there was once frequented by him, and today allows his admirers to get a glimpse of his past. However, it is still the Cathedral that steals the show. Salt deposits in Zipaquirá were formed 250 million years ago, and were raised above sea level during the late Tertiary period, when the Andes were formed. The Salt Cathedral is considered one of the most notable achievements of Colombian architecture.[3] Also it has been denominated as "Jewel of Modern Architecture". The cathedral represents for the Colombian people a valuable cultural, environmental and religious patrimony.

The cathedral is part of a larger complex including "Parque de la Sal" (Salt Park),and a Museum of mining, mineralogy, Geology and natural resources. The complex is located in Zipaquira, town of Cundinamarca Department (49 km (30 mi) north of Bogota), at 2.652 m Altitude. The travel can be done by train from Bogota, in the Tren Turistico De La Sabana (Savanna tourist train). The town is recognized, not only for the Cathedral, but for being near one of the oldest human settlements in the Americas, El Abra archaeological place. The halite mines were exploited already by the preColombian Muisca culture since the 5th century BCE. Being one of their most important economic activities. The traditional halite mining was described by Alexander von Humboldt during his visit to Cont. Next Page
