Breaking News!!! ATIM Editor in Chief Viviana Puello Awarded Grand Medal of Honor and Honorary Membership by NAFA (National Association of Fine Arts in Brazil) for her relevant contribution to fine arts and culture worldwide through her work with ArtTour International Magazine, ATIM Web TV and the Vivid Arts Network. Written by Jonathan Xuereb ArtTour International Magazine is very proud to announce the recent and welldeserved accomplishment of our Editor in Chief, Viviana Puello. The awarding institution is none other than the National Fine Art Association (NAFA), the most authoritative organization for the arts in Brazil. NAFA is a non-profit institution dedicated to promoting fine arts through the various activities it organizes. The association, in recognizing Puello's outstanding contribution to the arts, is celebrating her by awarding her its Grand Medal of Honor as well as the prestigious title of Honorary Member, which were bestowed by the Association's President Mr. Edilson E. Barbosa. He stated that the award was to recognize Puello "for her relevant contribution to fine arts and culture" through her work with ArtTour International Magazine, ATIM Web TV and the Vivid Arts Network. There can be no doubt that this award was well earned by Puello, when one considers just how passionate her contributions to fine arts and culture have been, not to mention her energetic drive to do even more in the present and future. The positive impact achieved by Viviana Puello in this field has mainly been through her multifaceted role as founder, director, artist and activist for the arts. She has founded ArtTour International magazine, ATIM Web TV as well as the Vivid Arts Network, demonstrating her serious commitment to the arts, which she strives to express in as many ways as possible. While celebrating Puello's individual achievement is more than due, ArtTour International Magazine is very proud to have played a significant role in aiding Puello's promotion of

the arts throughout the world. One of the many virtues of the magazine is that it provides an excellent platform for individual artists to express themselves and further their contributions to the arts by reaching out to other art enthusiasts across the globe. With over two million readers and an ever-growing presence on the international market, ArtTour International Magazine is appreciated by critics, collectors and art lovers alike. It is immensely satisfying when hard work and effort pay off, making one strive to work even harder in the interests of art and culture. Quite apart from the award deservedly bestowed upon her, there is no doubt that Puello's qualities make her an excellent example for other art enthusiasts who wish to contribute in their own way to this industry. Awards given by respected bodies such as the NAFA are a very welcome and laudable incentive, which further encourage art enthusiasts to participate actively in this field, so one hopes that other organizations will also act in a similar way. Having one's efforts recognized is always a highly rewarding experience. Once again, on behalf of everyone at ArtTour International Magazine: Congratulations, Viviana!

RUMEN SAZDOV Born in Bulgaria, based in Prague. His flowing figurative geometries, with their bold tones and manipulation of depth and two-dimensionality, belong firmly to the lineage of lyrical Cubism. Sazdov assembles his arresting images with strong, thick borders around triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids of strong, sharply contrasting hues. His separation of subjects into discrete geometric parts accentuates the power of his exquisite color collisions.

church of the light

Inside Tadao Ando’s Masterpiece by Andrew Kroll In the small town of Ibaraki, 25km outside of Osaka, Japan, stands one of Tadao Ando’s signature architectural works, the Church of the Light. The Church of the Light embraces Ando’s philosophical framework between nature and architecture through the way in which light can define and create new spatial perceptions equally, if not more so, as that of Completed in 1989, the his concrete structures. Church of the Light was a renovation to an existing Christian compound in Ibaraki. The new church was the first phase to a complete redesign of the site – later completed in 1999 – under Ando’s design aesthetic.

For Ando, the Church of Light is an architecture of duality – the dual nature of [co]existence – solid/void, light/dark, stark/serene. The coexisting differences

leave the church void of any, and all, ornament creating a pure, unadorned space. The intersection of light and solid raises the occupants awareness of the spiritual and secular within themselves The employment of simplistic materials reinforces the duality of the space; the concrete structure removes any distinction of traditional Christian motifs and aesthetic. Besides an extruded cross from the east facing façade, the church is composed of a concrete shell; the concrete adds to the darkness of the church by creating a more humble, meditative place of worship. As a testament to minimalist architecture, the crosses void in the east facing wall is the only prominent religious symbol present in the church. Cont. next page

Kyōto 京都

by Suzanne Duncan Photography: Suzanne Duncan © All rights reserved.

The city that once served as Japan's capital and the emperor's residence from 794 until 1868, is now the country's seventh largest city with a population of 1.4 million people and a modern face. Over the centuries, Kyoto was destroyed by many wars and fires, but due to its historic value, the city was dropped from the list of target cities for the atomic bomb and spared from air raids during World War II. Countless temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures survive in the city today.
