he year 2017 marks the 7th anniversary of ArtTour International Magazine. The first issue in 2011 was (not surprisingly) much smaller than the Winter Issue will be this year and went out to only 1,500 readers. Seven years later, we are happy to share our publication with over 2.1 million readers in 205 countries around the globe. Despite being younger than other magazines in the industry, ArtTour International has for many years been widely seen as the premier international art publication. ArtTour International Publications, Inc. continues to be an artist-led organization, with all its publications and projects, including ArtTour International Magazine, created, designed, and developed by artists. During these seven years, we have published the work of over two thousand artists in 31 issues and articles on our international online platform "Artist Spotlight," of the ArtTour International website. We have traveled to over 35 cities in 12 countries visiting and supporting international art events. We have presented over 300 video interviews on our "ART 2 HEART" Youtube channel. We have brought our magazine to the small screen with our weekly series "THE ARTTOUR INTERNATIONAL T.V. SHOW," which airs every Thursday at 5:30 pm on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, Spectrum 1993 in New York, and worldwide via live stream. We have developed one of the most recognized award programs in the industry, the "ATIM TOP 60 MASTERS," each year selecting sixty artists to be honored during the annual "ATIM MASTERS AWARDS CEREMONY," which is celebrated in a different city each year. rgentinian master artist Fabian Perez has been recognized worldwide as a prominent figurative painter, amassing critical praise as well as commercial success. Perez, considered as one of the most influential and critically acclaimed artists to have emerged in the international art scene during the last decades, creates intriguing and stunning compositions depicting detailed urban scenes, his trademark thematic choice, drawing inspiration from his unforgettable memories and compelling moments. An inspiring overlap of passion and intimacy all through each touch of paint. His works are mostly painted with acrylic based colors, as he desires the creative freedom offered by their rapid drying time, a feature which enables him to work with active overlapping layers and create complex scenes that frequently involve many human forms. works meticulously giving each piece a dramatic or romantic character where color, line, and light are orchestrated with considerable attention to detail giving his subjects a dominant physical presence. Recent works reflecting his romanticism include “El Verso,” “Vanessa Con Blanco” and “Vanessa Last Call,” making use of his trademark figurative depiction as well as his distinctive aesthetic of mystery, eroticism, and vibrancy in his choice of settings. Bringing his audience into the story of a couple embodying the masculine, and feminine; through delicate details such as fabrics, clothing, choice of drink and a romantic haze in the background. His audience is witness to the intimate moments between a man and a woman, as well as the young woman herself as she connects to the moments she is experiencing. Despite being heavily influenced by the artistic heritage of impressionism, Perez has managed to detach and explore a unique approach, a style he calls “NeoEmotionalism.” On his tree-dimensional sensuous works, Perez is not short of the same expert artistry present in his paintings. Working mostly in bronze, Perez creates thoughtful and Cont. Next Page

MNN El Barrio Firehouse

A Community Media Center Supporting the arts and the freedom of expression in these challenging times! by Viviana Puello

uring these challenging times, artists around the world are finding themselves censored, persecuted, banned, sometimes even imprisoned by governments, corporations and religious movements that feel threatened by the powerful influenced of art in all its forms. In times when many cultural organizations are being excessively cautious about the possible legal or financial consequences for the support they may offer to artists exposing challenging artworks, we appreciate the noteworthy work of organizations that are helping build a strong defense for artists’ rights and freedom of expression. 20 | WINTER 2018

In 2012, MNN El Barrio Firehouse, a Community Media Center opened up its doors in East Harlem with the purpose of ensuring the ability of Manhattan residents to exercise their First Amendment rights through moving image media by creating opportunities for communication, education and artistic expression in different languages. Enjoy this interview with Zenaida Mendez, Director of MNN El Barrio Firehouse. What is MNN? “Manhattan Neighborhood Network Public Access Television (MNN), the country’s largest community media center, is a non-profit organization that broadcasts programming on five public-access television cable TV stations in Manhattan, New York City. MNN is dedicated to the exercise of the First Amendment rights through moving image media and creates opportunities for communication, education, www.arttourinternational.com

artistic expression and other non-commercial uses of video facilities.” What is the mission of MNN El Barrio Firehouse? “MNN El Barrio Firehouse Community Media Center is an intergenerational community media center offering media education programs, community activities, and television production training in both English and Spanish. The Firehouse is also home to MNN's Youth Media Center, founded in 2000, which offers education, internships and other opportunities for low-income youth age 14-24 and curates a five-hour block of programming each week. MNN is a place of learning, creating and collaborating. residents. We also provide social justice focused media education and training to Manhattan's young people through our Youth Media Center” Can you tell us a little bit about the history of this landmark? “Located in a four-story former firehouse, the MNN El Barrio Firehouse community media center, at 175 E. 104th St., lets interested community residents use the latest digital film and editing equipment to learn television production. The building, a landmarked firehouse built in 1884 from designs by architect Napoleon Lebrun, is about preserving New York City’s past while creating its future. It was designed by Kostow Greenwood Architects. In 2007, MNN committed to expanding its media services and identified the East 104th Street Firehouse for this purpose. After a total renovation, the old landmark building emerged transformed into a beautiful state-of-the-art television production and broadcast facility. In 2012, doors opened to the public as an intergenerational community media center. The four-story building houses television production studios, editing suites, and classroom spaces. The Media Center feature state-of-the-art digital cameras, microphones, lighting, and editing equipment, training classes, a conference room and three studios capable of broadcasting live programming to some 620,000 MNN cable viewers and much more through live streaming on the internet.” What services does MNN provide for the community? “As MNN's President and CEO Dan Coughlin says we do three simple things; provide training classes on how to make a television show, provide the equipment to make the show, and then provide the channel space for adult and youth to air their shows. Also, we have a small gallery where local artists exhibit their art. In our monthly Film Club, we feature films and documentaries with a social justice content. We host community forums on issues of concern to the community such as women's rights, health care reform, net-neutrality, police brutality, tenants rights, prevention of domestic violence, the role of local community board, public 22 | WINTER 2018

transportation, LGBTQ rights, affordable child care, local elections, & much more. We also collaborate with local community-based organizations such as the Fortune Society which works with formerly incarcerated people, The National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, El Barrio Operation Fight Back, HOPE Community, Union Settlement, Alianza Dominicana, as well as colleges and schools. MNN broadcasts in over 20 languages and our instructions and workshops are held in English and Spanish.” Something that we would love to share with our readers and we think would be of great inspiration is your journey with MNN. Since the early 90’s you have had quite a fantastic experience with MNN, starting as a producer then serving as Director of External Affairs and for some time now as the MNN El Barrio Firehouse Community Media Center, how has this love story with MNN evolved? “My journey with MNN started when I served as a volunteer at the MNN's board of directors in the 1990's and as you mentioned, became a producer for several years of my own talk show. I stayed away for some years while I was working organizing on various issues at the national level, then in 2006, an MNN board member encouraged me to apply for the position of Director of External Affairs due to my experience working in various communities as well as the political landscape of the borough. Therefore, I see my journey with MNN as a continuation of my activism. Empowering regular working people through digital media literacy, making access to technology available to our young people who otherwise may never have this opportunity due to lack of monetary means is an invaluable service, and I am privileged to be able to do it.”

ousnak fled the Lebanese war with her parents when she was only eleven years old, first to London, then Paris and finally settling in Montreal. Lousnak is the granddaughter of survivors of the horrific Armenian genocide carried out between 1915 and 1923 when the western part of historic Armenia was emptied of Armenians. Her career in the visual arts started as early as seventeen when she worked as an assistant art director with the monthly Montreal Magazine along side her father Hamo Abdalian. She developed her skills as a sculpture under the wings of the great sculptor Arto Tchakmakdjian while attending visual art courses at UQAM. “Escape" Scratched & Painted Acrylic On Wood Panel, 36"x48"

paintings that appear almost threedimensional showcasing the influenced of her experience as a sculptor. The use of black and white allows a non-intrusive expression, leaving the viewer a significant freedom for interpretation. Her signature technique of working with drawing accuracy is an integral part of her works, as it becomes the pillar on which her artworks develop. With the use of textures, lines, and brushwork, she portrays the emotional essence of her subjects frequently including surrealistic elements within her paintings, a feature which introduces a dream-like detail into her work. She also chooses to make use of blurred dark backgrounds that introduce many elusive qualities and recreate a mysterious atmosphere mesmerizing her viewer. Lousnak's work as singer/songwriter is influenced by traditional Armenian music, essentially monophonic creating an exciting blend of contemporary production with elements of folk tradition that honor her cultural roots. Her naturally beautiful voice flows at times sorrowful and angelic, others strong and vigorous. Her song “Doudouk” has been included as one of the theme songs for ArtTour International’s film production “Kintsugi - The Line Of Destiny”. “Armand Vaillancourt" Scratched & Painted Acrylic On Wood Panel, 48"x60"

In her career as an actress, among other roles, she performed the part of Shoushan, mother of the painter Arshile Gorky, (iconic figure in one of Gorky's paintings named "The artist and his mother") in Atom Egoyan's movie Ararat (winner of 5 Genie awards). "Ararat" took her to the Cannes film festival's red carpet along with Charles Aznavour, Christopher Plummer, Marie-Josée Croze, Elias Koteas, David Alpay and the film producer Robert Lantos. As a stage director, Lousnak signed the performance of “Forestare” (Alexandre Éthier) at Le Lion d’Or and Outremont Theatre, “Mes mondes flous” Fredric Gary Comeau at the Quat’Sous theatre. She has also directed shows of her authorship at Le Lion D’or, Frontenac Cultural Center and the Cinquième Salle of la Place des Arts. Lousnak showcases her devotion to art as a way of life, a choice which cannot be limited in only one field but rather explores the full spectrum of artistic expression. Her work is both a reference to the rich past and a voice which considers the future, a production which is fitting within the context of the contemporary artistic society.

“From Fashion To Fine Art” The Compelling Works Of Barbara Tyler Ahlfield by Viviana Puello

“Feline Fashion Harem" Oil On Canvas, 60"x48"

T

he name Barbara Tyler Ahlfield has been long associated with the runways of America. She has had a successful run in the global fashion scene working as the lead fashion illustrator for over eight major U.S. department stores among them Hutzlers, Dillard's, Foley's, Lord & Taylor, John Wanamaker, Lazarus and Nordstrom; a journey that has proven to be rewarding and very stimulating for the artist. The head-turner boldly left her lucrative career in Fashion Illustration to follow a very successful career in fine arts, developing a body of work that fuses classical portraiture with fashion illustration. Additionally, she also explores animal portraiture. Ahlfield studied at Ohio State University, Columbus College of Art and Design, and the Schuler School of Fine Arts. The lushness of color, line, form, and texture found in Ahlfield's compositions result in sensuous and extraordinarily compelling works of art. She skillfully blends classic artistic figure painting styles with fashion illustration and modern elements executing each painting with a great sense of femininity and elegance. Her masterful use of luminous, vivid colors gives each of her pieces a strong sense of contrast and dynamism. Barbara Tyler Ahlfield

consistent and smooth line quality to add personality to her subjects while reflecting the shape of character movements such as walking or simply lounging. Her skillful use of light and shadow gives a sense of depth and drama. The artist admits that she is attracted to a dramatization of the characters she portrays. She 32 | WINTER 2018

Ahlfield has dedicated a series exclusively for animals. "Glamour Portraits With Pets" aims at increasing public awareness about protecting the endangered species of wildlife. The contemporary artist's collection includes "Borzoi Strut" where she displays a Russian Wolfhound walking with the tail erect and spread out. The haughty walking style of the breed equaled to the status of the aristocracy. The leashed dog is taken on a stroll by its elegantly dressed owner. "Feline Fashion Harem" is yet another work which has earned critical praise. The lounge-like setting showcases a model named Alexandra laying on a decadent pillowed daybed accompanied by her three pet cats. The artist decks out the female model in a ravishing brown velvet attire. The protagonist is seen lazily reclining; the feline beauties are relaxing on the cushioned bed with plush pillows in the luxuriously self-indulgent painting. Barbara is a proud sponsor and board member for the foundation, Pet Philanthropy Circle. Celebrity Stylist

Irma Martinez

T

he guest star for our Fashion & Art Issue is celebrity stylist Irma Martinez. She has dedicated over twenty-five years of her life to this branch of the fashion industry and is considered to be one of the top 25 most influential women in the Hispanic community, according to People En Español. Martinez's story goes back to a time when being a fashion stylist was not yet acknowledged as a career path, which is why she is now highly recognized as a pioneer in her field. Throughout her career, Martinez has collaborated with many influential Latino figures and showbiz celebrities like Shakira, Sofia Vergara, Eva Longoria, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Carlos Vives, among many others. She has also worked with international brands, taking part in campaigns such as Target’s "Dream in Color," "Make a Move Power," by Procter & Gamble, "Got Milk," and "Orgullosa." Martinez has also been chosen as a spokesperson for Target, P&G’s "Try it, Love It" campaign, luxury brand Birks & Mayors, Transitions Lenses, and Head & Shoulders. Her creative, unique blend of innovative contemporary and retro styles has led to a significant following on social media.

The root of Martinez's success comes is her professionalism, creative style, devotion to her craft, and charisma. Over 20 ago she founded Trendy Group, a group of companies specializing in support services for the fashion, entertainment, and Latino lifestyle industries, with the help of her partner and co-founder Enrique Lopez. How long has Trendy Inc. ben around? "Trendy Inc. has been around for over twenty-two years, I had begun my work individually a few years before that, but once my business partner and husband Enrique saw the potential this lifestyle had to expand; we partnered up, and that's how Trendy Inc. was born”. And how was it to establish your brand as a creator? I know by experience that it is something that does not come quickly to just any artist. "Yes I'm a highly creative individual and can easily organize my artistic goals, however in the business aspect, I don't embody that, as well as my husband, does. The success of Trendy Inc. is due to our partnership, he came in and invested his time in it while www.arttourinternational.com

El Manual Del Estilista THE MANUAL OF THE STYLIST, the first literary project by the stylist to the stars Irma Martínez, is a must-have for the new generations of fashion stylists who want to understand what this profession is all about. The message delivered by a successful fashion expert and entrepreneur recognized as one of the most influential Latina women in the United States. Through anecdotes, case studies with more than a hundred celebrities and international productions, Irma Martinez engages with the reader, in a didactic and efficient language, as well as the powerful visual image throughout each page. A source of inspiration, not only for stylists but the public and lovers of fashion and style, this book is an excellent tool for the new generations of stylists who have to adapt to an increasingly competitive world and a job with high levels of demand at a professional level. A manual from A to Z on how the costume design career works.

having his job at the time, once the expansion began to happen, and he saw the possibility for us to run our brand independently he dedicated his time entirely to our brand. This all came to be from our very own clients. They trusted our work so much they would ask for recommendations for photography, makeup, and hair. In time we became the whole package for their needs." Looking to inspire future generations of young designers and fashion lovers, Irma Martinez published her book, “El Manual del Estilista," her first literary project and a source of inspiration for many, the book shares Martinez' success story as a celebrity stylist and entrepreneur. About the book, she said: "It's a book to show future stylists my methods and what I have learned throughout my career. It's a practical book; it's not something you learn in the Universities, it is based on my experience in the industry throughout all these years." The publication of her book has led her to a new stage in her career in which she has become devoted to mentoring. Although still dedicated to styling, Martinez discusses her new passion for supporting rising professionals in the industry: "It has become my primary focus this year. I am still doing styling but more exclusively. I am no longer Cont. Next Page

doing all the shows I was doing before, or I would end up dedicating all my time to styling and not my new love for mentoring. We have a great team that I can count on and trust, and they help with a lot of the styling work. I do the award shows which I enjoy very much, and which come naturally to me. So, with the Latin Grammys, Premios Lo Nuestro, and Premios Juventud, my schedule is full. I'm swamped, but I'm happy, so happy with this new chapter in my life." Martinez' most recent venture, Trendy Academy, an educational center in Miami to inspire and provide tools to young people who want to learn how to develop a career in styling following the vision of a true pioneer, has received a lot of positive feedback from her following. This school serves Martinez's need to share her knowledge of her field. Her years of experience serve as the backbone for the practical education offered at Trendy Academy, ensuring that the instruction will be of a very high quality and forging a strong connection between the older and the younger generations in the fashion industry. "The idea of my classes came to fruition from the response I was getting after writing my book. From that, I created the academy, and I lecture and run courses that offer styling certification, as well as courses for individuals who want to discover and expand their style. Those are the two primary classes. They are practical and intense, I set my students up to success, teaching them all the tools to run their organizations. It's not just about them being stylists but creating their empire."

"It’s gone very well with that class I love the mentoring aspect. People are requesting for the courses to be online as well, this year I will be looking to have the classes available online. lex Osborne lives and works in the Williamsburg section of New York City; he is a painter drawn to motion and the shift that comes with it. His work appears to be explosive, sending projectiles of color careening outward. Osborne’s choice to pursue action is a stand against complacency, a response to societal pressure. “In today’s world I think we feel stuck in a lot of ways, whether it be a job or a relationship,” he says. “However, just like rivers flow and paint spreads, life is constantly moving.” With singleword titles, pop culture references and screwball evocations of electric cheese, Osborne takes his viewers on a trip that careens from the psychedelic to the lovely, creating new space for himself and anyone who dares to follow. He is always drifting through different mediums, exploring resin, acrylic, and digital painting techniques. For Osborne, experimentation is a vital act. He believes artists must be free of fear. During his first painting class, he watched his peers wear coverups to protect their clothing. He looked down at his tshirt and jeans and saw the second canvas. For sales and more information visit:

Carol Carpenter is an intuitive painter who uses experimental processes and a saturated palette to create vivid works of organic abstract art. She uses oil, acrylic, and watercolor mediums to tackle ordinary subject matter such as landscapes and floral images. Her technique and skillful use of color approach a modern expressionistic style. Carpenter is mystified by the natural beauty in nature and uses color to capture the balance between reality and imagination. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1948, Carpenter is an award-winning artist currently living in Columbia, Maryland. ndrea Bonfils is an awardwinning American contemporary painter, photographer, and mixed media artist. Bonfils resides in Connecticut and maintains a studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her recent works from the “Submerged Garden” series is a stunning photographic meditation on an idealized oceanic paradise. Bonfils employs pioneering underwater techniques to create largescale photographs of dreamlike rapture. Through her lens, the reflected images of submerged floral sculptures morph into pure geometric abstractions. She states, “The sensation when viewing this work is serene yet intriguing, as if one is diving, drifting and adventuring within a pristine ocean oasis.” The genesis of this series began 20 years ago when Bonfils was scuba diving on a kayaking expedition to an uninhabited island in Belize and transfixed by the coral reefs kaleidoscopes of colors and life. The recent precipitous dieoff of these reefs and similar oceanic degradation compelled her to create “Submerged Garden” to memorialize their majesty and support their restoration. ArtNetZero the fine art print of underwater floral photographs from artist Andrea Bonfils' "Submerged Garden" series. The 19mm silk charmeuse print is a multifunctional dress, skirt, shawl, and tapestry for all sizes, genders and seasons. elgian artist Frans Frengen has developed a work process that is as intriguing as the artwork he creates. Frengen began drawing as a young boy, and his talent as an artist was quickly recognized. He studied painting and drawing under prominent artists for some years before developing the signature “Fumagine” technique that forms the basis for much of his work. While in Wemmel, near Brussels, Frengen developed the fumagine method, best described as the equivalent of painting with a candle. More than just painting with soot, this technique gives a distinctive, stylized look to Frans Frengen's paintings and drawings. It provides his primarily black and white 52 | WINTER 2018

compositions a mere appearance, emphasized by the high shading that is created by the fumagine technique. Despite the bold, thick lines, smudgy appearance, and simple nature of Frengen's drawings and paintings, they are still highly detailed and reveal the artist's deep level of skill and technique. In addition to the simple shades of gray smudging created by the fumagine technique, Frengen also adds bold spots of color to the paintings. The primary colors of red, blue, and yellow are often featured in his work. It is clear that this is the work of a talented artist who has spent many www.arttourinternational.com

years studying technique and artistic styles. Most of his art features people and scenes from everyday life portrayed in a unique way and with a great perspective. “A Renaissance Man” Lawrence R. Armstrong by Mia Tina

Award winning artist Lawrence R. Armstrong describes his work in art and architecture as a continuous exploration of the “concept of layers.” Armstrong is an architect, painter, and sculptor who has created a niche for himself as an expert in the fine arts. His pieces represent an ongoing exploration of the concept of layers -- specifically, how they interact and intersect with each other to depict meaning.

happens quickly in a series, with many sketches and pieces being created one after another. Though the process is sequential, they regularly correlate with the first “flash of light” that inspired him. Armstrong says that many of his life's passions manifest in the same way.

He describes his art as having been founded in an awareness and fascination of layers in the natural and built environment, in space and time, intellect and emotion. He finds inspiration in “flashes of light,” which he notes appear involuntarily to him through his sensory perception via artistic mediums, like music and writing, architecture both built and natural, or events, people, and moods. Blends of all of these, create even more complex layers. After absorbing these layers, Armstrong allows the concept to gestate before arriving at the exact media he will use to produce the piece. Then the process

Lawrence R. Armstrong has been called a “modern Renaissance man,” and for a good reason. Not only is Armstrong an exceptional artist and architect, but as the chief executive officer of the international design firm Ware Malcomb, he has seen the award-winning company through consistent growth, with a notable boost in annual revenue of more than 170 percent between 2010 and 2015. A testament to the Renaissance man's artistry as much as to his business acumen and expertise in design and technology. In an “Art 2 Heart” interview with Viviana Puello, editor in chief of Art Tour International Magazine, Armstrong speaks about his process. “I notice layers in the natural world and the built environment; I notice physical layers, and I see events that happen in a very planned way and in a very disorderly way. I listen to layers in the atmosphere of sounds: music that is very orderly and other sounds that are random. The atmosphere of different moods, different people that might fill a room. And so, my work is an expression of the very orderly versus the very chaotic and unplanned.” “I love everything that I do,” Armstrong tells Viviana Puello, “and I think that's a vital part of anyone's life – you have to love what you do. I love being an architect; I love running my company and helping my clients and our people grow. That inspires me, so on the weekends and in my downtime, I'm inspired to go to my studio, and I create this work based on those inspirations. For me, it's an outlet, and it's a way to continue to be creative and to contribute.”

Armstrong's work as an artist blends into his leadership as the CEO of the visionary design company Ware Malcomb. The firm's chief marketing officer, Ruth Brajevich, speaks to this synthesis, “His work as an architect is enhanced and inspired by his work as an artist, and his corporate clients appreciate this unique sensibility. At the same time, his

art is inspired by modern architects and artists, as well as his international travels.” The success of both the firm and Armstrong's personal work are mostly owed to technology, according to Armstrong. We may all have associated him with artistic ingenuity, but it appears this talented artist is not swift to take credit for his beautiful masterpiece. Virtual architectural models, constructed through building information modeling, provide an endless virtual vision of coordinated views for various architectural designs and projects, allowing both the designers and the firm's clients to envision the outcome through the creative process. This tool also benefits Armstrong's multilayered sculptures and paintings, with their intersections and interacting layers. A world traveler who brings his art everywhere his feet land, and design and business-savvy man, Armstrong now lives and works in San Clemente, California. He is an accomplished designer, architect, and CEO of the successful international firm Ware Malcomb. This great visionary has paved his way in his career, earning his place as a master of the arts.

“Dans La Confiserie" Oil On Canvas, 39"x55" USD$10,500

The central theme of my work is to show people as figures detached f ro m co n s c i o u s t h i n k i n g a n d actions. The figure is situated in a moment of pure being, lost in thought, unaffected and entirely within their feeling. You probably know this: When you see someone lost in their thoughts and you become the observer of this intimate moment. You immerse yourself in this person's inner thoughts and are almost embarrassed to be part of it. I primarily show my figures in moments like this. I want to capture the intensity of a fleeting moment or expression. This short moment, seemingly so unspectacular and often unnoticed, is so moving and intense, revealing for a brief moment the unfeigned, the inner, it provides a glimpse into the soul.

verse in a Rumi poem says, “Let the beauty you love be what you do.” I am most fortunate that I can create artwork and projects that express my love of peace and beauty. Maybe you are wondering how I became a sculptor. This was not something planned or studied in school. It came about in midlife after a divorce, coupled with a failed partnership in business that took the life out of me. I was depressed and feeling the great loss of a decade of building my business. On a summer day in 1991, I thought it would be helpful for my teenage son and me to have a shared project. I went into an art store as he was outstanding in art. When I saw a pile of soapstone on the floor, I knew he would like stone carving. Well, we both joyously took to it, and when he went back to school, I continued. I found that refining the raw stone into smooth forms was helping me heal my grief. So I carved “The Grieving Man” and the grief transferred into the stone sculpture. I continued carving what emotions I was feeling. When the sculpture was complete, the emotion was expressed and no longer burdening me. I just removed what wasn’t part of the form. This was metaphorical for I was letting go of parts of me that no longer served. I let go of my grief, my shame, my pain, my fears and beautiful sculptures emerged. I joined a gallery, and my sculptures began to sell. Late 2000, I had a premonition. I felt pressure on my head with my body upside down. I carved “Rebirth Totem” to express this feeling. Soon after 58 | WINTER 2018

that, I was evicted from my home and studio, my son was diagnosed with illness, and my father passed away. I asked myself if I only carved one more sculpture in my life what would it be. I wanted to connect with my I AM presence, the place of peace within. So I began my first I AM sculpture, which has become my greatest series. After 911, I started a Compassionate Listening group, for conflict resolution skill building and so my peers could give the gift of listening to others. This led to an i nv i t a t i o n to co - fa c i l i t a te a Jew i s h G e r m a n Reconciliation Project in Germany. Viewing the films and photos of the liberation of the Concentration Camps in WWII as a small child was enough for me to agree to go. It was a life-changing project, for me and the others. Most of us grew up where no one talked about the war and what happened. We were trained to listen, and that broke the wall of silence, and our hearts opened to each other. We reconciled, and we recognized how we all suffered from war. After the Project, one of the participants invited me to visit her in Berlin. We both had the sincere desire to help create peace between divided cultures. We fell in love and married the following year, and we have been creating peace and reconciliation projects together for the past 14 years. In 2013, as I continued to express my love of peace through sculpting and activism, I had a compelling vision. I envisioned a three-dimensional symbol of www.arttourinternational.com

She is an extraordinary watercolor painter, and the winner of numerous international art competitions in the USA, Asia, and Europe. Yuryk has exhibited worldwide and receiving international acclaim. Yaryna Yuryk explains his work by saying, “Art and painting, in particular, can not be deaf to the people's problems: pain and joy that cover their hearts at the same time must be reflected by the artist with a positive-energy to heal. Therefore, every stroke of the artist falls on paper or canvas, cannot be a solid, pasty, dark and dirty, but only-ethereal, sonorous, joyful.”

ward-winning master artist Katrin Alvarez is known for her compelling, dreamlike, surreal paintings that represent the complexity of human situations. Alvarez focuses on the human figure while introducing multiple references such as objects, animals, etc. to enrich the composition conceptually as well as visually. Katrin Alvarez started as a journalist, going in-depth into the writing profession, but along the way she taught herself the art of painting, influenced and inspired by Michelangelo and Brueghel. Alvarez's works are the perfect combination of expressionism and surrealism. Her paintings are troubling and provoking yet soothing, intimate and sensitive yet bizarre, upsetting yet blissful. The the compelling and transcendent imagery in her art has a form of teaching, evoking an array of emotions in the viewer. sing color as a natural communicator in her pieces and the emphasized symbol of expression, Susan N. McCollough brings forth an exciting journey to her audience with imagery filled with freedom of movement and spontaneity. With a carefully orchestrated use of color, McCollough creates her paintings on over-sized canvases with the use of oil, acrylic and mixed media, allowing her pallet spread across the canvas, bursting with energy and fluidity. She accomplishes this by keeping her palette to two or three saturated tones, contrasted with areas of solid, deep black and primary colors in the 68 | WINTER 2018

background. She explores color, line, texture, and patterns with a powerful ability, and creates juxtapositions for maximum impact. Her abstract works may be interpreted as depictions of human figures, cityscapes, or imaginary objects that create a very engaging narrative. The consistency of her bold color use carries into each creation, however, the essence and play with texture changes each time, showcasing the emotional investment of her art. Both abstract and linear forms take place in exhibiting the world she portrays. Her www.arttourinternational.com

“I receive inspiration from the blank canvas —expression of inner-most feelings, freedom of movement, emerging shades, connecting space and colors. Even negative spaces speak to me. Ideas come from many sources, incessantly filling my head. They originate from travels to distant places, from faces I’ve seen; from natural works of Nature and creations at the hands of Man. The excitement I feel just waiting to start a new canvas is beyond description.” - Susan McCollough fondness of life and its conceptual complexities is what gives her audience the intimate experience of seeing her works as she openly expresses the joy in living possibility within each stroke. Originally from the Bronx, New York, Susan N. McCollough lived in Dothan, Alabama from the age of six until she graduated from high school. Her works are held in gallery collections in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, New York, California, Florida, New Jersey, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington DC and Arkansas. McCollough has served on the Art Committee of the United States Sports Academy for over ten years and is now artist Emeritus and serves on the Board of Trustees. She is also a member of the Women’s Art World organization in Marrakesh, Morocco. McCollough owns a gallery in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where she also has a studio where she creates most of her works. During her creative process, the artist envisions her paintings and designs; once she is convinced of which direction to go, she is ready to place the first brush stroke and let her creativity flow. "Before I paint a new canvas, many times, I will envision painting it as I fall asleep and I work it out in my head until I know the direction I will take the next morning. Sometimes I do not wait until the next morning. I find it all a labor of love, fun and exciting with every brush stroke I take . . . " Freedom of expression and spontaneity are some of the highlights of McCollough’s works. She goes beyond boundaries, infusing her works with unique visual energy, creating art of aesthetic appeal and profound emotion while inviting the viewer to an intimate dialogue. McCollough has shown her works internationally and received numerous awards. She is highly collected and has been since the early stages of her career. She has sold almost every painting she has created throughout the years, a large part of it created by commission. Her new creations are rapidly acquired and highly anticipated. The artist has a passionate devotion to her work and creates from the point of genuine, pure inspiration. We congratulate Susan N. Meet Miroslav Marsik The composer for the theme song of “Kintsugi - The Line Of Destiny” the thought provoking documentary produced by ArtTour International Magazine in collaboration with Create4Peace.org

W

hat a pleasure to reach out to you! I've listened to your work and have to say it is indeed impactful. It positively aligns with the theme in “Kintsugi - The Line Of Destiny.” It feels earth-shattering in powerful ways. I would like to know a few things about your connection to the vision of ATIM’s Green Planet project. When did you discover your passion for music? I started to compose music relatively late. I had been studying software engineering, and after I finished university, I had finally time for a serious hobby. I bought a guitar, and three months later I found a drummer and a singer. We have established a pop band called Instinct. Thanks to the group I realized that I like composing music.

Tell us a bit about your hometown and how has your culture influence your art? I was born in a small mountain village Strba in Slovakia, but now I am based in Prague in the Czech Republic, where I studied. Prague is a great city with awesome people. The most significant advantage of living in Prague is a high probability to find people to establish a band or to co-work on short movies and games. Thanks to these opportunities I started to compose music. How do you define your style? I am not sure if I can define my style precisely. I like dramatic music the most. I don’t like composing a happy music which tells “everything is okay.” I need to bring a story into the harmony. I need to feel some tension and mood changes during the composition. I use a variety of instruments to express the emotions. I use band instruments like guitar, piano, bass, drums. I like orchestra instruments, various unusual instruments and also synths, vocals, etc. Computer software and sound samples bring no limitations in music production today. What artists inspire you the most? I am strongly influenced by film music and by rock and pop music as well. I love emotions which Hans Zimmer brings into the music. I am inspired by Ramin Djawadi, composer of Game of Thrones series music. I need to mention Nino Rota, whose Godfather movie theme is one my most favorite. And many many others. In rock and pop music I am inspired by a lot of contemporary artists you can hear on the radio today. What is your stand for environmental preservation? I think we should be more friendly to our planet. There are various ways in our everyday life we know about. Just do not ignore them. What can musicians do to be in contribution for the stand for a Green Planet? I think that musicians and another artist, who is followed by people should lead their fans to be more active in environmental preservation. I am pleased I can be a part of ATIM’s

Green Planet project in the ďŹ lm "Kintsugi - The Line Of Destiny" and motivate people to save the nature. What projects do you have coming up? We have released our debut album with my band, and we are preparing for a tour, now. Beside this, I keep making new compositions. It is my biggest hobby, relax, and fun. Music is excellent because you can always ďŹ nd something interesting in it and it is lifelong learning. I am composing music for some short ďŹ lms here in Prague, too. I hope that one day I will have an opportunity to produce music for a full-length movie because this is what I love to do: Making music to bring emotions. Working solely with a palette knife, I pull multiple colours on both sides of the knife, mixing the colours directly on the panel. Working flat, I create from all sides, ensuring that the piece works compositionally from all sides. defined portraits, rich in its realistic delivery; he frequently includes objects or surroundings that alter the reality and create dream-like scenarios that unfold on the canvas. The characters portraited in his works might be real or imaginary, but all of them include an effeminate side influenced by the great appreciation and admiration he feels towards the feminine world and the detachment from the frigidity of the masculine. As per the artist, some of them are projections or alter egos, but all are part of reflections from life and idealizations of a parallel world that symbolizes a refuge to escape the dull side of social rules. In his work “Artificial Illusions,” a piece that encompasses many of his trademark characteristics as a painter, a Barbie-like feminine portrait is immobilized by a chin strap, and her face is approached by a crayon and an injection. While it can be considered as an unnerving image, her facial expression is oblivious, featuring a frozen smile and a blank stare while these objects menacingly touch her face. native of Russia, now based in North Carolina, USA, award-winning artist Sveta Long, has a unique style given the name of "Faberge Art Deco." Her work is a colorful nod to the Faberge eggs and Art Deco era. A walk into the innovative window of her work is a precious gift to all. Long's artistic techniques are a unique craft; she takes us into an imaginative world of play and craftsmanship drawing intricate lines, flowers, faces, and mermaids that catch the light to shimmer on vases, plates, fabrics, and eggs. Long incorporates the use of kitchen appliances such as plates, cups, utensils, and a variety of objects to depict her abstract world. She has a love for all things that shimmer and brings her fresh new style to numerous subjects. What once was a form that was traditionally kept to elaborate and ornately painted eggs has expanded to multiple items. She recreates well known and highly desired Russian crafts, using designs that at some point were solely made for royalty. Her exploration of this concept started at home, as she recreated and developed household items. Sveta Long's work is exhibited in selected international public and private collections and museums. “Works of Faberge and Erte have always been a fascination of mine. I wanted to try to see if I could create something like the masters. For years, I have imagined my artwork painted on a variety of garments. Finally, this idea came to life. I now have shoes, dresses, scarves, shirts, and jackets, and I love it! Now, the clothing is my canvas” - Sveta Long. 88 | WINTER 2018

Star Trauth

Marlene wearing Caged choker inspired by Caged Totems

"My love for the tactile nature of fiber began at a very early age, sitting at my Great Grandmother’s knitting basket and running my fingers through fibers, something I still think about while manipulating my fiber works today. I graduated with a concentration in fine art and worked for many years as an interior designer. is further nourished my love of the limitless color and texture of textiles. As an adult, I have become very influenced by Japanese and Scandinavian craft culture. I am drawn to the creation of something that causes the person to pause their eye and be attracted to touch, as I did at my Great Grandmother’s knitting basket. My passion is creating mini pieces of fiber architecture; I call totems. My vision is a departure from traditional fiber works while employing some traditional methods." - Star Trauth

O

riginally from Cincinnati, Ohio, award-winning artist Star Trauth creates magnificent installations using organic materials. Starting with a cylindrical canvas and creating a tapestry of fiber and other elements like metals, bark, insect parts, papers, etc. have been used in addition to traditional fibers she brings her vision to life. Her work has been featured in private collections, galleries, and museums in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Star seeks to entice viewers with experimental and visually compelling manipulations of media on her signature cylindrical canvases. She unapologetically devours inspirations that feed her creativity, borne of living unburdened by consumerism, negativity, and fearful social influences.

onna Bonin never anticipated being an artist. Upon Graduation from Queen’s University, she pursued her career as a physical education teacher and gymnastics coach at Moira Secondary School in Belleville, ON. She was also a successful equestrian competitor and coach. Physical activities abruptly and prematurely halted upon contracting Guillain Barre Syndrome leaving her partially paralyzed. Bonin was motivated to take her first watercolor course in 2000 by finding something meaningful to do “sitting down.” Success and recognition as a watercolorist came as a surprise that has resulted in a full time second career as an artist, an instructor at Loyalist College, and a leader of travel painting workshops in Europe and across Canada. An exhibition of Bonin's paintings in New York City in 2012 garnered international interest in her work and has led to numerous shows and awards in Europe and North America. Her works have shown in Florence, Brussels, Barcelona, Cannes, Miami, Vienna, Toronto, and Montreal. She is most proud of being selected to represent Canada three times at France’s National Society of Beaux Arts Exhibition in the Louvre and being named one of ArtTour International’s Top60 Masters of Contemporary Art for 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
