The Reality of Climate Change A

by Viviana Puello

lthough some people still remain skeptical about climate change, it is a truly global crisis that has a lot of support from very reputable sources. For example, NASA (together with NOAA and USGS) is currently conducting research, using breakthrough technology to observe all aspects of the Earth's ecosystem. There are satellites and other complex instruments orbiting the Earth right now that are studying the oceans, land, and atmosphere, with more to launch soon. The gathered information provides scientific evidence that proves global warming is really happening and that human activity is responsible for its progress. Earth's temperature has continuously changed throughout its history. The end of the last glacial age (about 7,000 years ago) more or less matches the beginning of human civilization, which could be a factor to determine how much it affects us. Although global warming could be understood as the opposite of a glacial age, there is scientific proof that shows that it is mostly caused by excessive CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. This situation could get out of control and create a global catastrophe.

The emission of carbon dioxide and other gasses from machines has caused a rise in the planet's temperature of 0.9 Celsius since the 19th century. Consequently, the Earth is experiencing changes: the oceans are warming, the ice sheets of the poles are melting, the glaciers are retreating, and the amount of snow is decreasing. Furthermore, the sea level has risen eight inches since the last century; there are more records involving hot temperature records than cold ones, and the acidity of the oceans is increasing due to CO2. Concerned with the global warming problem, the art community is taking a stand by sending strong messages through art. There are two main ways: through practical solutions and through persuasive ideas. In either case, artists are trying to change the world into a better place. The themes and concepts that sculptors and painters (as well as a few architects) use in their works reflect their thoughts regarding the global warming problem. Some of them believe that scientific observations are not changing people's behavior. They, therefore, intend to create art that creates a better understanding of the problem on the part of viewers and persuades them to look for a solution.

Israeli artist, Shyfra Levyathan, alters her photographs with digital technology to create impressive surrealistic images, which she associates with climate change. In her work, "The Haunted House," she puts an elegant house in a barren landscape that could be related to Mars, and that contains strange weeds and flying creatures around it. Maribel Matthews is an artist from Gibraltar who wants to raise consciousness about the problems that our planet is facing. She has started to use more abstract forms and vivid colors to represent scenes with natural disasters (fires, hurricanes, etc.), as well as painting with different mediums (other than oil), to help in this task.

www.arttourinternational.com

In "Underwater HOA, Marker 8," Xavier Cortada put a sign in front of a house, indicating the altitude at which the sea level will rise if global warming continues. He believes that, through this sign, people will be able to visualize the true extent of the terrible problem. Climate change is a reality, and we all must act now before it is too late. We stand by and support the voice of the artists sending their message through the pages of this special issue of ArtTour International Magazine.

Jodi Simmons “Symbiosis At The Border”

T

by Viviana Puello

he mesmerizing cover image of this special issue of ArtTour International Magazine, dedicated to our planet, is an original painting by award-winning artist Jodi Simmons. Using soft brushstrokes, Simmons explores themes like peace, beauty, harmony, nature, and the mystical through imagined luminous scenes. Applying rich natural pigments—yellow and orange ochres, navy blues, and glistening golden hues—she captures the light and emotional force of her subjects. Simmons' skillful use of color creates simultaneous contrasts and defined lines that give a sense of depth and tridimensionality, in which her figures appear to burst beyond the canvas.

Jodi Simmons is known for her icon-sacred images and her masterful application of gold leaf. She uses natural pigments and egg tempera to infuse the canvas with vibrant imagery. The skillfully executed result is then water gilded and placed

Simmons meticulously arranges a variety of forms, figures, and symbols to create a dialogue surrounding her subjects. Her compositions emerge with delicacy out of a golden background in order to provoke and inspire the viewer with themes of faith, love, peace, life, mortality, and the sacredness of nature. Each painting is a provocation, prodding its viewers to reexamine their relationships with their subjects.

At first glance, Jodi Simmons' works seem to reveal classical training and mastery. However, she is a self-taught artist who has developed a style that is all her own and that she has mastered as the result of diligent artistic practice, innate talent, and extensive research. Simmons started painting these historically admired figures following a near-death experience; these modern versions, however, cross theological boundaries. Simmons's icons Cont. Next Page

often combine Orthodox and Catholic symbolism and, therefore, can be seen as bridges between the Roman churches and their Eastern brethren. With frames made by her husband, these paintings are a family affair and a striking example of modern classical art. Her latest work, "A Child Shall Lead Them," inspired by Greta Thunberg, depicts the young environmental activist leading nature towards a brighter horizon, leaving behind—and beneath—the horrors and machinations of industrialized society, as represented by snakes. With the use of clear symbolism, Simmons shows us the location of a more hopeful future, as well as the person who is leading us towards that better place.

FALL 2019

What are the core, fundamental themes of your work? "Any work of art can be symbolic, which indicates the use of the material to represent something immaterial, and an icon indeed has this intention from the beginning. The work of symbols is to unite, to bring together, to join; it is the opposite of diabolical, which is to divide. Throughout the process, painting an icon is striving for unity; unity is the core of the work. When an effort to unite is made in any realm, it can open a space for a new creation, something that is not possible in a state of division. " What do the works in this publication mean to you? An Evening With Saint Francis “Composing the Canticle' All my life, from earliest memories of childhood, the world of nature has been my greatest source of joy. I love it all. I love the sunshine, the rain, snow, wind, trees, creatures big and tiny, the songs, smells, moods, and seasons more

overuse of chemicals. It is a sad and disheartening situation. As I worked through the emotions, I realized this was something I wanted to image. A comparison began to form in me between our country and the Mexican Sunflower. The sunflower has an abundance of nectar, enough to share with all the little creatures who need sustenance. This country has abundance too. Some in this country have a superabundance. How wonderful it would be if we could do like the sunflower and open our petals in a blossoming of recognition, sharing, and celebration of the vibrancy and interconnectedness of life.”

than anything in the whole world. I've never been without a dog as my closet companion. I have moved multiple times, and every single one that I had any say in, had to do with getting me to a spot where I could experience nature. I didn't grow up in any religion, so when I started painting icons, I discovered a treasure trove of reading about the remarkable lives of Saints, including St. Francis. The Canticle he wrote is so beautiful! He speaks of the created world as a family, which I so understand. Plus, he had a wolf buddy. I would also mention that I like painting Saints of old because none of us alive today truly know what they were like in person, so there's lots of room for imagination. In this piece, I imagined being one of the creatures around the fire, listening to Francis as he voiced his devotion to creation and Creator. Working on this icon was a complete joy; it was more like play than work. And it still gives me joy. Every time I look at it, I am right there by the fire, between the chipmunk and the wolf. “

A Child Shall Lead Them “In this icon, I did something I've never done before - I painted it to honor a living person who has become an icon of leadership right before our eyes. I find it extraordinarily graceful that this young lady has emerged as the authentic, righteous voice of a movement - so much so that with her example, the whole thing has exploded across the entire world. She is not alone, and she appeared into a scene which was well primed, but there is something very pure and timely about her presence and voice. She has undoubtedly united the wonderful young people everywhere who sincerely fear for the future of this planet with good cause. I'm scared too. We have everything to lose. We must come together; we must unite. And we can do it. Thank you, Greta, for following your conscience and using your voice for the good of the all.

Mexican Sunflower ‘Symbiosis at the Border' Like many of us, I have struggled with the scenes from our Southern border the past few years. The fate of the children is unconscionable. The destruction of the butterfly sanctuary to put up a barrier wall feels like a violation. I read about the sanctuary and how it is so important for butterflies, as well as other creatures and native plants. At the same time, I read about the decline of the overall butterfly, bee, and bird populations everywhere due to the “Mexican Sunflower: Symbiosis at the Border” Egg Tempera and 24k Gold on Archival Kaolin Clayboard, 16"X16"

I have long felt that there is an imbalance between the energies of masculine and feminine that exist in human relations and cultures - and this imbalance has resulted in unnecessary harm. The qualities of sensitivity, tolerance, deference, caring, and nurturance are frequently seen as feminine and inferior to qualities of strength, leadership, independence, courage, and assertiveness, which are often viewed as masculine. None are better than another, and all are important for individuals, humankind, indeed all creation, to reach and maintain balance. But now, it seems our individual and cultural imbalances have spilled over to disturb the entire planet seriously. Individual and collective work is needed to correct this. Many religions include a feminine archetype in the highest wisdom seat. I have always felt that the earth itself is a 'womb' like structure, in which all are connected in a large matrix of abundant nourishment and sustenance. If we are to avoid mass extinction, we need to protect and care for the matrix in a spirit of recognition, sharing, and cooperation with all of creation. In this icon, I have married the idea of the feminine as Mother Earth and her wisdom of the matrix of cycles and seasons, with the Holy Shekinah (the feminine tent of presence and protection) and the companionship of the feminine Spirit of Regeneration in truth. It is an archetypal image, not an individual, but a collective feminine force in cooperation with creation. The open arms of the Mother is an ancient symbol of the pure, internalized archetype offered in service. "

Armen Sarvazyan

A

rmen Sarvazyan is an artist, scientist, engineer, and inventor. As a scientist, Sarvazyan has authored over 100 patents and 200 scientific publications and received numerous prestigious awards for his research work. In the last decade, his creative interests were equally distributed between Art and Science. In parallel with his research activities, Sarvazyan's quest to understand nature inspired him to express her beauty in a variety of media, including wood, stone, concrete, graphics, and outdoor installations. Recently, his sculptures were exhibited in several art galleries in Chelsea, Manhattan. In his New Jersey property, he has built a personal art gallery, named the Temple of Arts where most of Sarvazyan's sculptures are exhibited.
The aim of Sarvazyan as an artist is to elucidate nature's beauty and perfection through his artwork. In both investigating scientific problems and creating artistic works, he seeks to understand and honor nature. His artwork aims to illuminate the hidden beauty in ordinary things. The manifested sculptures intended for outdoor display merge organically with their surrounding landscape to create a natural exhibition. Often he tries to communicate specific philosophical messages to his audience through art so that the message reaches someone through the heart rather than the brain.
One of the manifestations of nature's beauty that Sarvazyan has chosen to explore extensively in his work is that of the female form. Sarvazyan has been able to express the remarkable feminine beauty in a variety of ways, both in material (wood, marble, concrete, metal) and in the form (a mother and her child, a pregnant woman, the female body). The amicable and focused relationship that Sarvazyan's artistry has managed to develop with nature shows just how much hidden beauty and meaning there is in our world and our experience within it.

centimeters rise on sea level. Other glaciers are in similar situation. Most recent researches have found that the rate of ice loss from Antarctic glaciers has doubled in the last six years and is now five times faster that in the 1990's creating a significant reduction in thickness at some sites of up to 100 meters. Satellite data has shown that Antarctica has lost as much sea ice in the last four years as the Arctic lost in the last thirty four years. While this change is concerning for a variety of reasons, it holds the potential to affect both animals and humans significantly. We're starting to feel the effect through the food chain since the changing habitat has already impacted

many species of animals that rely on the cold temperatures of Antarctica for survival. Though the full effects are not known, it is expected to threaten crops, livestock, and aquatic species. These changes can, in turn, affect the availability of food, driving up prices and possibly even making some foods unattainable. For those that travel around Antarctica for fishing or recreational purposes, the rising ocean will significantly change its weather patterns. Regions and channels that have been known to be safe may now become dangerous, a problem that will impact shipping lanes and cause delays. Overall, the two primary changes that we, as humans, will experience are potential food scarcities and higher costs for products obtained overseas.

Antarctica is home to animal colonies, which are now in danger with rising temperatures. The distribution of these colonies has already been affected. We will see a decrease in their numbers over time, and some species may even become extinct. For example, penguins depend on Antarctic krill, a species of fish in the Atlantic Ocean. There has been a longterm decline in their abundance, which means less food for the penguin colonies. Furthermore, many species of seals and whales are dependent on the sheets of ice for their food and reproductive purposes. They are in danger of not having access to these sheets, which will also decrease their life expectancy. The minke whale and orca are, particularly in jeopardy. Global warming in Antarctica is a significant danger, posing a real, but sad, example of how the rest of the world may be affected. Keeping an open mind and staying informed will help us find ways to contribute individually, as families and at community levels. Our contribution is more critical than ever; finding local solutions will help with this global crisis. It is our responsibility not only with our planet, the only home we know, but with all generations to come.

utch creative activist Carla Kleekamp exhibits a deep understanding of Eastern and Western traditional art in her delicately detailed symbolic representations of society. She has used many different means and materials to express her concerns for the environment, including aquarelles, etchings, drawings, watercolor, and engravings. Still, her primary focus is etchings on rice paper. Kleekamp portrays the impact of social separation through spacial elements and motifs. She addresses global economic and environmental issues to bring forth a reflection about how humankind is suppressing, abusing, and exhausting nature by exploiting it in a non-sustainable manner. "My work consists mainly of etchings, collages, water paintings, nijimi, and drawings. The making of these is, for me, a possibility to express my deepest feelings. In my work, the pure line remains, for me, the most important medium. Both a scholarship for a visit to Japan and lessons of a Chinese teacher have been beneficial in this aspect. The questions about the truth of images, news, is for me, a continuous effort to express my vision in themes that concern me. Which values, of me and others, define our interpretation of reality, The human standard is based on interests, economic growth, and I try to express the consequences of these in my work. Most of the themes in my work are focused on the continuous suppression and exhaustion of nature by human beings. The effect

through nature in the nest of her home away surrounded by tall trees and the profound influence of lake waters. Being in touch with the raw essence of these elements triggered a desire for play and expansion, which she pursued creatively.

nternationally renowned painter, rooted from the province of Quebec, Carole St. Germain has had a fruitful career in the arts inspired by natural and figurative elements. Her large scale paintings bounce with color between pop art, abstract, and 3-D perspectives. Germain blends the natural world with a lively and animated play on classic characters and old Hollywood charm using acrylics, oils, proxy, pastes, and mixed media.

Symbolic imagery and words of affirmation are used as her narrative to spread joy, and peace as well as the driving tool that amplifies texture and movement. Germain's work serves as a reminder of life's good fortune, and the inspirational motif of transformation and tenderness is discovered in her butterflies, found passing through in each interactive scene portrayed by her adventurous methods.

Having dedicated a large portion of her life to family and career-building, she rediscovered her inspiration to paint

es Kilfeather's art does not take the backseat, creatively synchronizing his thematic focus of philosophy, science, ethics, and political roles that made an impact in his earlier years. He took moments of trauma and transformed them into a lifelong process of discovery and transformation. While Kilfeather's work often displays an optimistic narrative, it commentates on the ease with which humans ignore their ethical conscience. He is well versed in multiple mediums, choosing to primarily work with oil, ink, watercolor, photography, digital manipulation, and etched copper. What are you currently focusing on? “My philosophical aesthetic still drives my art, totally. Its common objective is to inspire thinking about ethics, history, contemporary society, and the future; life, love, hate, relationships, connectivity, and differences. Being careful to avoid political or religious agendas as these would cause my art to be misinterpreted. But

"My philosophical intentions remain solidly grounded, evolving as more information, knowledge, or emotions become apparent. However, the actual physical and visual presentation of my art does occasionally radically change, and I need to explain to my followers that the underlying philosophy remains in place, but the actual new visual or physical presentation broadens the narrative, taking in new dimensions."

Harris composes photography by juxtaposing and mixing different shots to create vibrant, bold, and eye-catching images that confound the eye. eRoi, connects references and cultural impact from the past, present, and future in his large-scale paintings, drawing inspiration from social and environmental issues. With an underlying complexity in color and symbolic patterns, LeRoi's energetic pieces represent accelerated modernism, geometric motifs, and pano Africanism. He would define his art as "electric primitive," combining bright, vivid, eye-catching colors creating a story map of life and celebration. Although known for his eclectic style, LeRoi’s recent works display a softer, and warmer depiction of his ancestral roots, and paying homage to his muses through expressionist figurative portraits. Earthy hues take the stage in "Reine Mere" bordered with his signature style patterns and soft textures. His stylistic paintings have caught the eye of many and garnered success, bringing him to exhibit in many different art galleries all around the world.

"I feel very strongly about what's going on around the world, as many of you know. Every day, I open the newspaper and there it is, more violence, more hate, more war, more bloodshed. More, more, more, more... and every day, I cut out these images, these words, and bring them to the studio with me. As I reflect on the needless pain and suffering that goes on daily, I incorporate them into my work so others can maybe, hopefully, reflect on them also. And so, my new series, 'Where Have All The Flowers Gone?' Attempts to do just that. It is a social commentary, as well as an emotional reflection of myself during these times."

hen it comes to this publication, I usually stick to my subject: Art. But as an environmental activist, I could not help but take this opportunity to share a message with our audience, particularly since this issue is dedicated to our planet. As both a mother and grandmother, I do confess to having a sensitive heart for children. However, when children are the ones who call us to action, I think we all need to open our hearts and receive their message. It seems that the world needed a teenage activist to wake us up to the consequences of global warming and climate change. That's precisely what Greta Thunberg has done. She has managed to awaken humanity to a new awareness through her strong message and persistence. Greta Thunberg has stood up for her cause and refused to stop gaining respect from leaders, activists, artists, children, teenagers, millennials, and older adults all around the world. She is a reminder that

we should all stop for a second and think about the world that we are leaving to our children and grandchildren. Along with her message, Greta has traveled the world, always choosing to use eco-friendly means, thus making a statement with her every move. Recently, she was in Alberta, Canada, where she led a climate strike rally. Her following stop was a climate strike rally in Vancouver. September and October were mostly dedicated to speeches in North America. But Greta does not plan to stop there. She plans to participate in the COP25 meetings. Last month, the UN announced that Spain would be the host for November's COP25, since Chile gave up plans to hold it due to deadly anti-government protests. Some 25,000 delegates are expected to travel to the event. The Swedish teenager is currently seeking help getting back to Europe following the

meeting's move from Chile to Spain. Abstaining from flying due to the carbon emissions involved, Thunberg has been traveling by boat, train, and electric car. Greta Thunberg arrived in New York for the UN climate summit in August, after a fourteen-day journey across the Atlantic Ocean in a sailing boat. Since then, she has moved via train and an electric car borrowed from Arnold Schwarzenegger. Her speech at the summit made headlines for her scolding of world leaders due to their inaction on the climate crisis "...You all come to us young people for hope. How dare you. You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet, I'm one of the lucky ones."

Greta has been an inspiration for many artists around the world. British artist Michael Pinsky invited her to visit his latest work called Pollution Pods, which has been influenced by Greta's message. Pollution Pods have been installed in front of the United Nations building. They consist of six chambers that represent air quality in big cities such as London and Beijing. Artists around the world have joined to help her and make her cause more visible. Art often speaks louder than words, and it is excellent when artists support such an important cause. Young Greta Thunberg has acted as a very much needed wakeup call, as well as a call to action. She has inspired many people who are now thinking of ways to contribute to stopping climate change, managing to do it all thanks to her commitment, honesty, and persistence.

Conn's work is a modern take on expressionism, using a unique method of evoking emotion and reaction, as he tackles relevant topics through subtle additions to each canvas. His technique of using enclosed space and representational, symbolic elements— the interpretation of which the artist leaves to his viewers—drives the many layers of his message and manifests its depth. “The Statue of Liberty in Kevlar" highlights Conn's signature style by utilizing women to speak to relevant topics such as recent social movements towards women empowerment and equality. He taps into various points of view and expressions of sexuality, doing so with a welcoming invitation to eliminate stereotypes on what a "woman" must embody to gain acceptance from society. With a lengthy career and well-deserved series of awards, Conn continues to make his mark in the international art community.

ost recently, Grimandi Art Gallery presented "Heads Up," a solo exhibition by award-winning master artist, Hélène DeSerres. Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, Hélène DeSerres is an awardwinning artist, photographer, sculptor, jewelry designer, and producer, whose work revolves mostly around natural themes that offer the viewer the splendor of our natural world.

The exhibition showcases DeSerres' latest series of figurative paintings, most depicting faces that emerge f r o m v i b ra n t b a c k g r o u n d s o n h e r p o w e r f u l expressionistic canvases. Her whimsically colorful works showcase a skillful use of form and light with the application of acrylics and mixed media organic items, which the artist collects from her daily life experiences. The result is masterful compositions that attract her audience and keep the eye of the viewer traveling around her canvas. Heavily influenced by her natural surroundings, Deserres is at the forefront in the fight against the destruction of wildlife's natural habitat and the battle for the overall preservation of the environment. DeSerres' heartfelt love for nature drives her to campaign for the conservation of our ecosystem. How has the world around you inspired you to advocate for environmental conservation? "I've been concerned about the world around me, i.e., environment, for the last 45 years. Was "granola" before

They taught us not to waste, to reuse things, what we now call recycling. It is part of me and stimulates my creative juices. It is what I am. What role do you think art is taking in the healing of our community right now? "I hope art touches the subconscious in those that see and appreciate it. It won't affect those who do not see any artwork, unfortunately. Healing is a long process; it cannot be measured. Also, I don't know if it works, except for art therapy." Helene DeSerres follows the totality of nature in her artworks, presenting a body of work that evokes vibrancy and intimacy on every image, continuously luring her viewers in from a place of love, honesty, and commitment. DeSerres' work has been recognized all over the world through many exhibitions and galleries in countries such as Italy, Spain, France, Canada, Portugal, Mexico, Tunisia and the Czech Republic. The versatile artist has also embarked on a mission that will delight every nature conservationist - exhibiting artwork in such a way as to draw attention to the need to preserve and protect nature. Fragile Coral and Vanishing Elephants are just some of the pieces that are part of her "Environment My Life My Heart" collection. artworks rich with symbolism, color, movement, and form. Her paintings tell a story that shifts according to the viewer's perception. Her signature style and technique seem to reflect on her unique sense of inclusiveness, mystical patterns, and opaque pigments. While some of her themes seem to reflect her admiration for Mughal and Rajasthani art, the others stem from her strong emphasis on Hindi and Sanskrit passages. Marrying Eastern and Western experiences into her vibrant composition style and delicate color technique, Maheshwari allows her audience to experience emotional, personal, humorous, and spiritual upheaval. Throughout the decades, veteran artist Subodh Maheshwari has utilized color in unique ways to express the wonders, afflictions, and beauty of the world. Each of her multiple pieces tells a story, helping the viewer see life from Subodh's point of view. With her paintings, Maheshwari expresses anguish, spirituality, humor, happiness, and, most importantly, hope. There are layers of symbolism in the colors she uses, showing that hope can be expressed in color, and color brings hope to her.
