For John, the creative process starts with a concept. He draws inspiration from current events, American culture, world icons, and other artists to create unique pieces of art. He combines English words and slang with images to create an immersive experience.
John’s choice of medium is also an essential part of his creative process. He primarily works with watercolor and pastels, allowing him to create fluid and vibrant pieces that evoke emotion and tell a story.
One of John’s most notable installations, “Milk Cartons,” features world icons representing the absent qualities in our society today. The installation profoundly impacts viewers, highlighting the qualities we should strive for as a society. One of John’s notable installations, “Milk Cartons,” portrays the old milk cartons that police once used to exhibit missing persons. However, instead of missing people, John’s artwork displays the absent qualities in our society today. Each milk carton in the installation features a world icon representing those qualities. The installation profoundly impacts the viewers, and the accompanying words enhance the narrative, emphasizing the qualities we should strive for as a society.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC STYLE?
“I tend to paint realistically with watercolors and/or pastel. When I succeed the image is engaging to the viewer.”
WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
“I don’t start with an image I see on the street. I start with an idea...then I search for an appropriate image or invent one. Often, it takes weeks to link it all together.”
HOW AND WHEN DID YOU DISCOVER YOU WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST?
“I didn’t start as an artist. For several decades, I was the creative director of several large advertising agencies. In midlife, I decided to pursue art and writing so I could feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and reborn.”
WHAT MESSAGE DOES YOUR WORK TRANSMIT TO YOUR AUDIENCE?
“There’s a meaning beyond your first impression. If you study my art for a few

seconds, you will find a deeper meaning, and maybe even discover a smile.”

HAS ANY PART OF YOUR STORY INFLUENCED WHAT YOU DO NOW?
“Sure. My decades as an international creative director definitely influenced me. It involves words and images...and usually aims for an emotional payoff. I still do that with my artwork.”
AWARDS, RECOGNITIONS AND PUBLICATIONS
“I have exhibited art throughout America, all of Europe, and even Tokyo. I have enjoyed more than a dozen solo shows. I have been awarded Best of Show in Hamburg and the Blue Door Gallery in NY.
I have exhibited in the Carrousel du Louvre (Nat’l Society of Beaux-Arts) Art Tour International Magazine Collector’s Choice Award, Top 60 Masters, Ardya, and Emerald Awards.”
I like to create art that has an immediate impact and residual mental tickle. To achieve this, I often employ contradiction, words, lists, sheet music and of course paint. I strive to create art that engages the viewer beyond their initial view. Look at it for a few seconds and you’ll appreciate it all the more.
