Susan N. McCollough "My Journey Through The Arts" - Living Masters

“My vision onto a blank canvas inspires me! Everything I come into contact with inspires me! Sometimes it comes in dreams, thoughts, or playing with composition and/or color. My paintings are all very different. Each comes to life with spontaneity and freedom. I am ALWAYS inspired to paint another canvas!” - Susan N. McCollough

FOREWORD I'm delighted to curate this publication, which we dedicate to the artistic journey of Susan N. McCollough, an artist of remarkable talent and dedication. Susan is a force of nature. It doesn't take long for the viewer to become captivated by McCollough's color-filled compositions, which give the impression of three-dimensional works due to their rich texture and unexpected changes of directions. The audience is drawn in by visual symphonies to uncover deeper meanings and forms in her vibrant paintings. Freedom of expression and spontaneity are some of the highlights of McCollough's works. She goes beyond boundaries, infusing her works with unique visual energy and creating art of aesthetic appeal and profound emotion while inviting the viewer into an intimate dialogue. The consistency of her bold color use carries into each creation. However, the essence and play with texture change each time, showcasing the emotional investment of her art. Both abstract and linear forms take place in the exhibition of her worlds. Her fondness for life and its conceptual complexities gives her audience the intimate experience of seeing her works, where she openly expresses the joy in living possibility within each stroke. Susan McCollough has produced numerous paintings, many of which were commissioned, and has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Her works are showcased in galleries and private collections in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Arkansas and Jamaica. McCollough has served on the Art Committee of the United States Sports Academy (USSA) for more than ten years and is now an Emeritus member. She also serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the USSA’s Board of Trustees. She is also a member of the Women's Art World organization. McCollough owns a gallery in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where she also has a studio in which she creates most of her works. Susan N. McCollough has shown her works internationally and received numerous awards. She is highly collected and has been since the early stages of her career. She has sold almost every painting she has created throughout the years. Her new creations are rapidly acquired and highly anticipated. The artist has a passionate devotion to her work and creates from the point of genuine, pure inspiration. Susan N. McCollough was presented with the "Artist of The Year Award" by ArtTour International Magazine in 2017, one of many awards she has received during her career. I have been an admirer of Susan N. McCollough’s work for many years, and I have had the opportunity to work with her on several projects, curating this publication dedicated to her is an honor. An honor that has allowed me to study her work more intimately, and that has brought me much joy and enlightenment.

IN RECOGNITION In recognizing the individuals who have been instrumental in my career as an artist, it is difficult to know where to begin. However, there are some who immediately come to mind. It goes without saying that at an early age my parents introduced me to the world of art. I fondly recall watching my mother as she painted landscapes, still life, and portraits. My father dedicated the last seven years of his life being with me as I painted every day in my studio. My husband, Gaylon, believed in me when I doubted myself. Without his love and support I would not have begun this journey. And, interestingly enough, my full-time dedication to being an artist began on a Sunday afternoon when he and I were coming home from a Peter Max exhibition in New Orleans, Louisiana. I dragged him to the Angela King Gallery to meet the world-renowned artist. Instantly, we were totally enmeshed with Peter. That event is also where I met Elin Egan and Malcolm Genet, who have become dear friends. With my husband’s encouragement and support, I made a decision to become a full-time artist. I opened a studio and gallery at the McCollough Institute in Gulf Shores, AL and with immense help of Michelle Jordan, who has been there from day one to facilitate everything from the lighting, hanging, shipping world-wide, setting up all exhibitions, photography, and technological support. Having become clearly focused on—and integrally involved in—becoming the best artist I can be, I continue to study, paint, sculpt and enjoy each new creation, along with the ever-expanding relationships with fellow artists and clients each new creation engenders. For allowing me to reach a level of passion and fulfillment about art that I otherwise would never have experienced, I wish to also recognize and express my gratitude to: • All the artist that blazed the paths my fellow artists and I follow • The many art collectors, clients and private collectors of my works • Joel Nomberg: Retired Attorney, Viet Nam Veteran and Purple Heart Recipient, Photographer and Artist. • Alvin C. She sculpts using water-based clay and paints in oils and acrylics, as well as in charcoal and ink, pastels, water-colors, and mixed media. This past summer, Susan N. McCollough celebrated her seventh year in the Gallery and Studio that houses more than 50 representative examples of her work. The theme of her Grand Opening was: "Past and Present. Now, after years of painting, she says she can paint everyday “For the love of it.”. I paint from the excitement of the blank canvas. I paint with freedom of inner-feelings, movement, lighting, connection of space, combination of colors, playing with positive and negative space until it all speaks to me." Most days you will find her working in the studio, where she welcomes all visitors. It is located next to the Villas at the McCollough Institute. MESSAGE FROM THE ARTIST “You know, I have never thought about why I paint. If I go back in time, it would be like the experience of most children. I started trying to draw the heads and pictures they tell you in the back of magazines. And then they say something like, “Do you draw? Do you have an interest in drawing? Enter this contest.” I would always draw it, but never thought about entering. Then I would draw pictures out of the encyclopedia. Then I noticed my mother had an interest in art. Later in life, she took lessons, but mostly she was self-taught. I really never thought about it again, until my freshman year at university. I needed an elective, so I took an art course. Ceramics I, with Frank Engel. After that I took every art course I could I almost double-majored in art without even trying. I married; I painted. I worked; I painted. I had children; I painted. I traveled; I painted. I guess I always came back to painting. I was fortunate early on to have sold every painting that I ever painted. I might have saved one or two, because I did not want to part with them. But, this year, I even let one of those go. I never took great photos or kept any real records. Just scattered here and there records, with a voice always saying, “Susan, you must keep better records.” It was my mother. She would always write down everything, when I would sell them in shows. I now treasure the names of paintings we would come up with and who purchased them —all in her beautiful hand-writing. At the age of ninety two, eight years ago, my mother Dorothy (Dottie to her close friends) passed away. But there are so many things like the journal she kept for me that are irreplaceable. At the opening of the Gallery, my first exhibition was titled “Past and Present.” Also, within the Gallery, is my second

studio, where I now do most of my painting. It is a new endeavor and one that, now, in this time in my life, just seems to make sense. When my father Max was ninety nine , he was still going into the gallery with me every morning, opening it up and closing it in the evening. He never missed a day unless we all went out of town. He was the Gallery Director and continued going into the gallery after he was one hundred years of age. My father passed away August 1, 2017 when he lived to be one hundred years and six months of age. My husband Gaylon and I decided together that this was a long time in coming. I have always just painted for myself and for commissioned pieces. Early in my career, I would enter shows but not until recently have I begun to do more paintings and more showings, and enjoying it more—I guess because I can. I paint from the excitement of the blank canvas. I paint with freedom of inner-feelings, movement, connection of space, combination of colors, playing with negative space until it all speaks to me. My ideas come from so many things that just fill my head all the time. It comes from our travels, the faces I see, the architecture, the people we meet, but mostly just the feeling I get just waiting to start a new canvas. Before I paint a new canvas, many times I will envision painting it as I fall asleep, and then I work it out in my head until I know the direction that I will take the next morning. Sometimes I do not wait till the next morning. I find it all a labor of love, fun and exciting with every brush stroke I take…” Susan N. McCollough www.susannmccolloughart.media

CRITIQUES “Painting with vivacity and exuberance, Susan McCollough approaches the canvas at turns with nurturing softness and with intimidating force. She engenders a dichotomy of expression that is full of spontaneity and improvisation to produce monumentally scaled works that are grounded in personal experience and infused with emotion. Having studied and worked with first generation Abstract Expressionist artists, she interprets and builds upon that legacy to create a style exclusively her own. Her work is replete with dynamic and energetic gesture which creates a directness of expression through diverse textures, abstract forms, and vivid colors. Working with such intense immediacy to create a profound manifestation of the self, it is little wonder that her work has gathered attention internationally as she exhibits throughout Europe and North America.” Jason Guynes, MFA Professor and Chairperson - The Department of Art and Art History, University of Alabama

“Susan N. McCollough has her own namesake gallery in Gulf Shores, Ala., where some of her breezy abstract paintings fit right in with the coastal lifestyle. The acrylic and oils are fairly large and command attention with their kinetic fields of scratchy lines, arcs, rings and stripes. Included in the show is ‘Transition,’ a mostly gray and white painting that was shown in 2015 in Florence, Italy.” Mike Roberts Pensacola News Journal

“Susan N. McCollough Landscapes of the unconscious in artistic research by Susan N. McCollough opens new creative scenarios, comparable to chimeras of the unconscious and evocative as unexpected windows of the soul. Through a survey, abstract art by Susan N. McCollough are turning towards a dreamlike language of great visual impact. The American artist manages to find her personal style to express their own inner world. The passion and the impetus of the pictorial gesture is witness not only a viable but above all an artist's temperament that expresses itself with spontaneous freedom.” Sabrina Falzone Art Critic and Historian - Milan, Italy

“Susan N. McCollough is a multi-faceted, international artist who captures the essence of her emotions on canvas, reaching deep within her soul. You feel the emotions from canvas to canvas and your mood quickly changes. Bold color schemes of intense hues create excitement unrivaled as you absorb her originality and uniqueness. Spontaneous movement, expressed translucency, veiling of sequences, flickering gold, goes beyond description and can be enjoyed independently of content. She has mastered Contemporary Art. Susan lives and works in Gulf Shores, Alabama where her gallery and studio are a major part of her life.” Kay H. Daughdrill Former Curator/American Sport Art Museum and Archives, Daphne, AL

“May your works Susan travel to many continents and be recognized with all the value and intent you put inside. People do not deceive themselves and recognize your art. You make us travel in magical lights and according to your canvases we feel all the love you put inside. Your creations are wonderful and we have so much fun to watch them. We will always be unalterable on your works because we feel all the intensity that you put there.” Michele Matray Art Agent, ART Cubisme Sculpture, Lyon, France

“OF HEAVEN AND EARTH” This is the name of the wonderful art piece I have been so lucky to acquire from Susan N. McCollough. After several trips to Susan’s gallery I fell in love with all her work but especially “OF HEAVEN AND EARTH” and wanted to bring it home. This painting drew me in from the start. Her unique strokes of color and use of varied composition take our minds to places that stir the imagination. I see something different every time I look at it, so it will forever be fresh, new, and exciting, just as Susan’s gallery is. I often visit to get a glimpse of the new paintings she has created and talk with her about ideas that might become reality on the next big canvas. She always gives us an adventure in art no matter what subject she paints, and I look forward to seeing what her colorful strokes bring out next. Susan is a great friend, mentor and inspiration to my own work. We are so proud of her talent and wonderful success nationally and in the international Art world. And I am very proud to say “OF HEAVEN AND EARTH” is going home with me, where it belongs. Thank you, Susan. Maria M. Bastin - Art Colletor Gulf Coast Arts Alliance

“On Friday, July 18, 2014, we had the pleasure of attending the Gala Reception at the Marx Library on the USA campus for Susan N. McCollough. Viewing Susan’s extraordinary creations spanning over 30 years, we perceived the depth and breadth of her influences, the focus and discipline of her research, and we felt her joyous explorations into the art world. Her works are beautiful, impressive, and inspirational like the artist herself. The show documents her progression as an artist and communicates her love and passion for painting, living, and giving. The Galaxy Series is a special gift… It is Glorious! Susan’s “The Eagle Nebula” is literally breathtaking. A magnificent masterpiece that transcends space and time! Like all the great global masters, Susan creates, the art of the Possible, the true and the beautiful.” Sandra Diane O’Conner-Page Co-Founder Global Motionist Masters ART Movement

Susan is among the top abstract artists in the world today. She is internationally known having her work displayed at the Florence Biennale, the Lourve in Paris, in Canada, South Korea, the New York Expo and many top galleries in the United States. Susan may well be one of the great artists of our time." Eloise Thomley Advisory Board Member of Gulf Coast Arts Alliance - Gulf Shores, Alabama

As a long-time collector of contemporary artwork and other eclectic items, our home is more akin to a museum. Of all the fabulous pieces that surround us the hub of each wing in the house is one by Susan N. McCollough. And, what great joy it brings us both as we remember the story these magnificent works tell; tales of Florence, New Orleans, and other magical places but always a celebration of life itself. Carolyn & Holland Powell - Art Collectors

When I saw The Mysterious Universe, what struck me most, was this is what I commonly see when I close my eyes and relax my mind. I see the dark blue centre with the gold waves surrounding it and pulsing in towards me. Your paintings in blue green and gold resonate with me and I see them as fluid harmonious energies that infuse me and nature. The paintings with a predominance of red, orange and black are more static and structural as are a lot of man-made objects and buildings on this earth. Both have their place here and are infused with creativity. Fiona Steffen National Federation of Spiritual Healers, Shaftesbury, Dorset, United Kingdom

The painting “Pillars Of Fire” is being packaged for shipping to South Korea. It is part of a permanent collection at the Haegeumgang Theme Museum where I was selected as a member of ICAF (International Culture and Arts Federation).

RECENT WORKS This series of works was created in 2019. In it, Susan N. McCollough showcases the mastery of her painting technique after years of experience. Yet, her exploratory and ever-evolving style are very evident. Her narrative in this series depicts how inspiration manifests itself in her life. At this stage, her creative process means connecting with inspiration at a much deeper level. Thus, the figures, landscapes, and places that emerge from her canvas have a spiritual connotation, almost as if the paintings are revealing themselves to the artist.

AFTER THE STORM, WHERE THE BAYOU MEETS THE SEA Oil On Canvas, 72”X48” - 2019

“Looking at a blank canvas I decided I wanted to travel in time and look for a secluded place to disappear as I painted my thoughts onto the canvas. As I continued to paint, I developed the place I would retreat; I found it! I love storms and the quietness that follows, especially as the sun is setting. The pleasant swamp effect that I imagined was chosen as a lazy secluded setting that many people might hesitate to visit. As I painted, I was enjoying the setting I had chosen to feel myself in this imaginary place; and it felt magical.”

NEW BEGINNING SERIES This exciting series created in 2015 showcases a palette of two or three saturated tones, contrasted with areas of solid, deep blacks, and primary colors in the background. The artist explores color, line, texture, and patterns with a powerful ability, and creates juxtapositions for maximum impact.

TRANSITION Oil On Canvas, 48”X60” - 2015 “This Painting Was One of Two Exhibited in the Florence Biennale at the Fortezza Da Basso in 2015.”

“Transition is one of two paintings selected to be exhibited at The Florence Biennale in Florence, Italy that I guess you could say was a turning point or a transition in my style and career. As I was painting this work, I felt an overwhelming sense that my art had just experience a break through into another place and time. It changed me as an artist. I do not know if any other artist experience this or not. That revelation never stopped until nine paintings later. The collection became a series I entitled, New Beginnings. I will always be grateful for this piece and the journey on which it took me – to a wonderful place within my art.”

JOURNEY Oil On Canvas, 60”X48” - 2015

“This is the second painting I did in a series of ten called, “New Beginning”. The first painting was called TRANSITION. As I painted it, I felt as if I were on a journey. That realization took me to this second piece titled JOURNEY—a journey through life. While painting these two pieces the brushes and paint became part of that journey…from beginning to end.”

There is something a bit mysterious, even borderline avant-garde about this piece. At first glance, the viewer is bound to notice the vibrant contrasts the artist creates. The orange and yellow oblong that many observers could interpret as a flaming portal to a mystical destination. There is a distinct aptness of gradient blending between the orange and yellow, so fine that you cannot almost tell how the colors have transitioned. Thematically, the piece could be reflective of our inward journeys and moments of introspection captured with movement, color, light, and shade.

NEW YORK NEW YORK Oil On Canvas, 72”X48” - 2015

“New York is a wonderful town! Well, for me it is. I was born in the Bronx. I guess you could say I have come full circle ending up in New York with my art. The painting New York New York was discovered by Viviana Puello and was chosen for the front cover of ArtTour International Magazine in 2017. For that, I was selected as “Artist of the Year” in Florence, Italy where I flew over to receive that award and the award for one of the Top 60 Contemporary Masters. The magazine goes out to over three million readers. The painting was done in the studio using enamel on canvas and painted while lying flat on the floor for the most part. It is an energy of love for the city and the love of bright lights and color that speaks volumes at night in Time Square and around the streets. The following year I came back to exhibit my work in New York with Viviana Puello and her staff and the Top 60 Contemporary Artist for 2018.”

"New York, New York" holds a special meaning for anyone that has ever lived in the Big Apple. Susan N. McCollough captures the dynamism, movement, and vibrant urban energy of the city. This work, featured on the cover of “ATIM Top 60 Masters” in 2017, when McCollough was also awarded Artist of The Year, is what we consider the representation of contemporary expressionistic art, with the unique and personal approach of this master artist.

BETWEEN THE LINES Oil On Linen, 45”X63” - 2015 Private Collection, Holland and Carolyn A. Powell This Painting Was One of Two Exhibited at the Florence Biennale at the Fortezza Da Basso in 2015.

Between the Lines is a painting that has special meaning for me. It encompasses the feeling one gets when one completes a task or (as exists in this case) a painting. It says everything I wish to convey. When I completed this work, I was ecstatic in that it incorporated all the technique and components that make up what I consider my view of achievement.

THE GUARDIAN Oil On Canvas, 45”X63” - 2015 Private Collection

“The Guardian is a figurative impressionistic painting, again using the reds, blacks, fiery orange along with a technique I include in some of my paintings - the black and white stripes. I particularly like this painting because it represents what I consider to be my style of painting. For me, this painting has special meaning. It contains the right amount of work and yet it allows the painting to breathe..”

ETHEREAL Oil On Canvas, 36”X72” - 2015 Private Collection, June Young

“This is a figurative painting with an ethereal twist. With the brush strokes, I let the painting unveil itself to ‘the eye of the beholder’. My vision is that the figures are part human—part spiritual. The colors are intentionally subdued, creating an ambiance of peacefulness that is reflected in the calmness of the figures, themselves.”

FLEETING MOMENTS Oil On Linen, 45”X78” - 2015

MELTING INTO SPRING Oil On Canvas, 48”X60” - 2015 Private Collection, Dr. Robert and Kymberley Oshman

“Melting into Spring was painted while snow was melting in other parts of the world and my memories brought me back to the vivid colors that spring was just around the corner. Most of my paintings center around life and happiness. The melting of snow along with the colors of spring symbolizes the many levels of life cascading down as in a waterfall that we are living through now. As the snow melts, the turning and twisting of the water represents the moments in everyday life and in the end, it and our life’s moments reaches the clear calm of the pool beneath the waterfall.”

FINISH LINE Oil On Canvas, 48”X60” - 2015

“Finish Line represents my interest in speedways and horse-racing. Simply stated the excitement of the competitive chase. In the state of Alabama, we are home to the Talladega Superspeedway. It is a huge draw here every year and thousands come out to see this event. This is a tribute to all the many thrill seekers and supporters of a statewide event, and lovers of the sport.”

ABSTRACT SERIES Susan N. McCollough's abstract works may be interpreted as depictions of human figures, cityscapes, or imaginary objects that create a very engaging narrative. During her creative process, the artist envisions her paintings and designs; once she is convinced of which direction to go, she is ready to place the first brush stroke and let her creativity flow. With a carefully orchestrated use of color, she creates her paintings on over-sized canvases with the use of oil, acrylic, and mixed media, allowing her palette to spread across the canvas, bursting with energy and fluidity.

“Abyss does not represent a bottomless pit, chasm or a catastrophic situation likely to occur or a wide difference between people, (gulf). Rather it was the act of applying paint to a canvas with layer upon layer that seemed to be endless and it keep getting deeper and deeper into the canvas. The more I painted the deeper it became. I felt that it could go on forever. Or perhaps I did not want to stop painting.”

ANGELS FLOAT Oil On Canvas, 60”X48” - 2016 Private Collection, Ben and Michelle Bostick

“I seem to incorporate Angels in many of my paintings. This one represents angels floating in the seas, drawing upon strength with the colors of the seas, oceans or the gulf and with the freedom to move through the waves enjoying life’s journey of contentment and peace. I compare swimming under water with the calm that comes over me - and I upon it - as in life. Everyone has that gift - to choose their life’s path floating through with the angels who are available to guide you as you embark on your journey. You are not stopping to smell the roses you are immersed under water (much as we were in our mother’s womb) where there is peace, contentment and quite...when life’s decisions can be made…or made for us”

BARRIER REEF Oil On Canvas, 36”X36” - 2016

“Living on the beautiful gulf coast, I am always thinking of oceans, seas, and gulfs. I am always in awe of the beauty and majesty of the infinite waters on our continent. The painting Barrier Reef reminds me of the accidental and intentional reefs that are formed in the ocean’s depths where places for smaller sea life to feed and thrive are in a protected environment. I am fortunate to live and work in a beach community where I can see and hear the ocean waves and look out toward the horizon into infinity.”

It was effortless, but I do know that all paintings work sometimes without the struggles and they just come out naturally. Regardless of the effort I put into a painting, the outcome is always the same-sheer enjoyment in every case.”

CASCADING FALLS Oil On Canvas, 48”X72” - 2017

“This past year I was fortunate to be selected to exhibit in Ontario, Canada at ‘Water for Life’, in The Historical Museum. We were on the border of Ontario and New York where the views of Niagara Falls were breathtaking. The colors of the cascading falls were incredible and mesmerizing. I sat for hours as you never saw the same sight appear in its ever-changing landscape. It is a must see for all to witness. This wonder, whether you are on the United States’ side or Canada’s side, it is in your reach to witness. A few months later an artist sent me photos of these same falls only this time it was in the winter. The photos showed the cascading falls turn into frozen shapes altering this magnificent landscape to an even more awesome sight. Again, I am fortunate to travel, exhibit, meet new artists and to witness Niagara Falls and the greatness in our world.”

“‘Begin Again’ is the story of life and death. It is a cycle in which I attempt to take the viewer on a virtual tour and begin with the earth, dark at the bottom, then travel up through the oceans and seas of turquoise and emerald greens, then to the sunlight, the reds and yellows for nourishment, then to the blacks for the calm death. Then the colors and brushstrokes gravitate back down to the earth where it all begins again. Life is a cycle.”

CONNECTION Oil On Canvas, 48”X72” - 2017

“‘Connection” expresses my love of animals even though most of the message is hidden in the painting itself. Some things may be obvious to the viewer, but the human face is hidden from site. My love for gorillas goes back to my childhood and the black in the upper left-hand corner is the profile of a male gorilla. Viewers should see dolphins, whales, sharks, representations of tigers, and the elephant with the drop of blood from poachers. In the trunk of the elephant I included the eye of the person giving the impression of the human profile. Profiles never let one see the entity of the whole animal or being, it hides the full surface from the full face and gives mystic to all. We never really know mankind and we will never really know animals. It takes a lifetime of study, loving unconditionally, patience, heart, and intuition. Maybe then the true understanding of human nature and the nature of animals can be achieved.”

DESTINY’S ROAD Acrylic On Canvas, 48”X60” - 2013

“Destiny’s Road is a metaphor for many of the pathways we take during our lifetime and the travels that take us beyond our boarders to enrich our experiences for the time we have on this earth. I love the travels I take on a canvas, the movements, the continuance of infinity! Then, I pause many times and know when I have finished my journey. It is there in front of me on canvas! Finito!”

DREAMS WITH NO BOUNDARIES Oil On Canvas, 60”X60” - 2017

“Dreams with No Boundaries is a painting that was sketched and painted while falling asleep. As you know, falling asleep are the best times to design and sketch what you are thinking of doing the next morning. I guess at both times, either falling asleep or in front of a canvas, I feel things are limitless. Of course, it cannot be exact but the beginning, the colors, the size canvas, the technique are all thought out. I begin as planned but then it becomes a little of what I planned...then it becomes limitless, no boundaries, and this is what keeps me painting every day.”

DIVERGENCE Oil On Canvas, 60”X48” - 2016 Private Collection, Joe and Kelly Johnson

“The layers of paint were applied as I felt the growth and the development of a living concept of composition. As in most of my abstracts, the paintings sometime feel as if they are a living puzzle or a maze that needs to be solved or set free. I find such a sense of joy when I know the work is complete.”

Susan McCollough's works underscore the creative mind of an unbridled spirit and an eagerness to bring to the artistic scene the unfolding of her creativity in dazzling colors. "Divergence" showcases abstract expressionism in its most unrestrained form. There is a profound emphasis on freedom that boldly comes out in her choice of dazzling colors and the movements of her brushstrokes. In this piece, there are some hints of geometric shapes that do not entirely crystalize. Instead, they are changed to become aligned with the artist's whim, and these shapes though not distinct, blend beautifully with her colors and background to add aesthetic value to the painting. On close observation, one might see some human elements like a head or an eye, but that is subject to the viewer in question.

FREEWAY Acrylic On Canvas, 40”X36” - 1976 Private Collection, Dr. And Mrs. Bobby Lemay

“‘Freeway’ was an early painting I created after leaving Birmingham, Alabama, with my husband Gaylon and our two children, our son Sted and daughter Chanee. During that year we lived in and traveled to New Orleans, Los Angeles, (Beverly Hills), and Brookline in Boston, Massachusetts. My husband had received his Doctorate in Medicine and was taking a year of advanced training in Facial Plastic Surgery. This painting was finished earlier in my career. The freeways were the first sight coming into these beautiful and wonderful cities. The loops of highways that interchanged and circled going into many different off ramps was an abstract painting in my mind with the excitement of painting a never-ending highway of choices.”

“This painting describes living in New York and visiting Times Square or any street that depicts people constantly on the move. It is the bright lights of the city and the darkness of the side streets that create the sense of intrigue that people seem to feel about this big beautiful city. As people are walking at fast paces, the lights are hurriedly reflecting off the buildings. To further describe the city, I use fast brush strokes and the palette knife with curves and lines that intersect to give the feeling of the hustle and bustle when the sun goes down and the lights go on. TOULOUSE AVEC LE CHAT Oil On Canvas, 36”X36” - 2017

“This painting was inspired by many people and events. I was first inspired by my Mother’s love of art. She shared that passion with my brother and me. My mother, Dorothy Bieber Nomberg, was a self-taught artist. She would bring art books home for my brother, Joel, and me to see the artist that she was fond of. My second inspiration was her favorite artist Toulouse Letrec. In our home was a wonderful poster of Letrec’s “Avril”, (April in French) with reds, blacks, whites and yellows. The poster depicted a Cabaret dancer. Understanding now - and looking back - it had a huge impact on me because today most of my works are done in these exact colors. Also growing up my family was dog lovers. Cats were never an option - until much later in life. As we were much older, and had families of our own, a cat took up residence at my parent’s home. The cat would not leave and so they eventually brought her in to care for her and feed her. Shortly thereafter they realized she was pregnant! There - in lies the love and bonding of le chat, (the cat), after which they continued to love and take care of four felines in their later years. Dogs, art, golf and cats were very important in their daily living. Having inherited these loves, could I have any better legacy than this? I think not.”

I relish in the wonderful mistakes that appear. Then for hours on end I solve my journey. Then, there is complete contentment!”

“‘Synchronicity’ was developed in an advanced abstract teaching workshop. It was a two-day work-shop so I chose to use acrylic instead of oil for this project. We used a 68”x80” unstretched canvas set up on two six-foot tables. Every artist was given one block, where he or she chose the colors, and painted an abstract within the block. When they were finished and content with their work, I proceeded to take all the colors they individually selected and used the main color red and added a few more mixtures but demonstrated to them how it is possible to work the canvas using the different techniques done by 10 separate artist and end up with what I consider a workable and interesting abstract.”

BLACK AND WHITE SERIES Monochromatic painting has been an essential component of avant-garde visual art throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century. In her exploration of monochromatic and two-color works, Susan N. McCollough develops this series of works by employing broad, flat fields of color on thickly brushed and layered canvases, changing values across the surface and expressing, with texture and nuance, a wide range of emotions and meanings, while evoking a state of contemplative meditation in the audience.

BLACK AND WHITE CONNECTIONS Oil On Canvas, 48”X48” - 2018

“Black and White Connections is the second painting I created in the Black and White Series. The theme is about making decisions, connecting to roads, or deciding which roads to travel, the ins and outs of trials and tribulations of everyday existence. We all have choices to make. There are many doors and pathways or roads that are sometimes open to us and we have to make sure the doors or roads we choose are good choices, made by sound logic. Whatever the outcome, I work through my final decision. The same thing is true as I am painting. I know that I can travel through and work out anything that appears on the canvas. It is an integral part of most of my paintings. Which door or pathway will take me on this journey? It is what I love the most, the mystic! This is when I get the most satisfaction of a work of art through which I have traveled and when I have finally arrived at its’ destination, then and only then is it complete!”

CROSSROADS Oil On Canvas, 60”X72” - 2018

Crossroads is the first painting I painted in the Series, Black and White. Throughout time, numbers have always been necessary and constant. Numbers tell a story, whether it be through mathematics or numerology. In my personal experience numbers seem to always present themselves either by repetitive appearances or by selective choosing of ones’ lucky numbers. In this painting, as in most of my works, the selection of which road I take, in the crossroad of my life, it has all been a journey. We are all on journeys throughout our lives. Which path will we take and when we do take it, how hard are we willing to work to reach our destination or our goals? The pathway in Crossroads contains many choices. I added numbers for everyone to be able to choose which numbers have meanings for them. It can be single digits or double digits. The numbers represent who and what they have encountered in their lifetime. It contains all the letters in the alphabet that one can relate to in the English language. It also contains songs made popular over decades. Some of which will have a resemblance maybe to your lifetime but definitely a part of mine. This painting was meant to be a puzzle to figure out how to make the right choices. It was time consuming for me, but it expresses the part of who I am, where I want to be, and is more-or-less biographical as an artist. Maybe it is my selfportrait or memoir, in the abstract!

YASENYA 18” - 2014 Private Collection, Sheila Smith and J. William McFarland Jr.

SCULPTURE Susan N. McCollough’s sculptural work emerges as an influential part of an ongoing conversation with her audience, working primarily in areas of figure and abstraction in her three-dimensional objects. Her monochromatic sculptures show the same fluidity seen in her two-dimensional artworks. As a sculptor, she excels in creating forms, clean lines, textures, and a soft movement that pleases with its serenity. "Max", a portrait of her late father, showcases the delicate features of his head. In fact, both works shown in this sculpture chapter showcase a more straightforward and realistic depiction than that which we find in her paintings, where she prefers to stick to an abstract expressionist style.

“Galaxy Series was a series of paintings I worked on, researched and then selected four photographs to paint as well as two abstracts. The two abstract pieces in the series were just from what I felt the midnight sky expressed to me. Those two paintings were Solar Connection and Lunar Eclipse. Solar Connection was selected to be on exhibit in Birmingham, Alabama at the Annual Energen Art Exhibition which was my first exhibition that I entered and was pleased to be accepted. Lunar Eclipse could be described as a complimentary piece to Solar Connection. The other four paintings were from photos that came from the Hubble Telescope off the internet. I have seen paintings done by other artists of the same photos in which I found interesting. The first painting, Eagle Nebula, is one of my favorite paintings. I cannot even begin to tell you the hours I spent doing this painting. It did not matter if it took me a lifetime. I had to get it right. The other three paintings are: Orion Nebula, Eskimo and Starry Night. Orion Nebula is another one of my very favorite paintings. It now hangs in an art collector’s home. It is full of radiance and colors that only the universe could produce. All four names were given to them by the Hubble Telescope scientist and their staff. They were all a joy to paint and was where I learned so much more than just the action of painting but the mixing of paint colors, the depth and putting the fire in the actual colors which excited me to know I could accomplish the essence of what I was truly seeing.”

Impressionistic

IMPRESSIONISTIC SERIES In her impressionistic series, Susan N. McCollough explores the technique born in France and later brought to the American art scene. Her compositions reflect the teachings of Impressionism, as she emphasizes the effects of light and atmosphere with a brighter palette and spontaneous, gestural brushstrokes. This series of paintings depict a range of classically impressionistic subjects, from quotidian objects like fruits and vases ("A Pair of Pears" and "Vessels") to landscapes and architectural scenes like houses and urban views ("Hidden City" and "Tuscany"). In her most recent painting, we find mystical figures that seem to emerge from the artist's subconscious, such as those in "From The Sea," a work that demonstrates the artist's desire to explore new subjects more in tune with her present state of awareness and depth of inspiration.

CAROUSEL Oil On Canvas, 36”X72” - 2017

“‘Carousel’ was painted as a reminder of the days when I walked to class in Florence, Italy. Studying the Old Master’s Technique at the Accademia d’ Arte, I would pass the square where a large carousel of horses and children were riding and where opera singers were dressed in the fashion of the Renaissance Period, entertaining the passers-by or having an espresso at an outside cafe. My fondest memories for a lifetime!”

“‘From the Sea’ is an impressionistic painting that features three figures that could be from the beginnings of humanity; or, perhaps the highly evolved species that we might become, in time. The colors of blue and green are intended to represent life emerging from a variety of dimensions.”

METAPHYSICAL Oil On Canvas, 48”X60” - 2015

“This painting incorporates the bodily dimensions of the Universe with the spiritual. The mix of colors I chose for this painting is not ordinarily found on my palette. I am unable to say why. It just is. The figures I painted can either be viewed as animalistic, or human. Various scenarios as to my intentions in this painting have been shared with me; but again, the viewer is always correct. To date, no one has actually saw what I felt as “Metaphysical” was being painted. However, I gladly welcome interpretations.”

HER EARTHLY VISION Oil On Canvas, 60”X48” - 2016

“‘Her Earthly Vision’ is one of my favorite paintings. I believe it was because of the journey I was on while painting it. I was completely lost in the motion and the moment! It developed on its own with an oriental dimension, that as a decorator and artist, I always added to finish a project. Whether it was a pillow, a piece of jade sculpture, or rose quartz defined by so many of the decorative oriental pieces with semi-precious stones in screens or animal objects. This painting reminded me of the earlier Chinese or sometimes Japanese paintings where the women and men were always out in the fields harvesting and taking care of the land and their crops. This is an impressionistic woman, Mother Nature, if you will, who is caring for the land, nurturing it, and overseeing all that she surveys.”

FRACTURED Oil On Canvas, 48”X36” - 2013

“‘Fractured’ a painting with a story. It was raining very hard late one evening and our power went out. My father, Max (who was living in a house across our driveway on our ranch) was calling me on my cell phone to ask me if we have power because his TV went out. So, I walked back to the bedroom to see if our TV was working. The screen was all pixelated. I thought what a great design, so I went and snapped a photo of it to paint that image the next morning. It had the actress’s face in the middle with all colors imaginable surrounding it. I was so excited about painting it that I forgot to get the name of the movie or the actress, but yes, I did get back to my father and told him the picture was pixelated but we still had power, and yes,...I did start painting the pixelated imagine the very next morning. However, I believe this is one of the only times I have ever changed a painting’s name. One day a very elegant and sophisticated lady came into my gallery. She stared at the finished painting for a very long time. Then she said, “I think I would name that painting “Fractured” and then she went on to tell me what she saw in the painting and then she explained how so many family members in their lives were fractured as a family but in the end seem to always work things out. As she went on to elaborate what else she was seeing in the painting, in my mind I was beginning to change the name I gave it “Pixelated”, from what I saw that evening. Because in the end, the picture did come back on as did the fractured family members she was describing come back together. This lovely lady is a college professor from Mississippi and who is now a dear friend. I enjoy and value clients that emerge themselves in a painting and explain what they see and how it makes them feel. It is the joy of an artist and gallerist.”

SINAI Oil on Canvas, 48”X72” - 2019 (Recent Work)

“‘Sinai’ is intended to arouse ethereal thoughts. It is my interpretation of a biblical miracle---that of Moses atop Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments. He is portrayed as a meta-physical being—capable of interacting with the spiritual side of humanity. The fact that Moses interacted with the entity we have come to know as “God,” is addressed, in that one of Moses’ shoulders represents that of his “angel” being. His other arm represents his human side, as it reaches into the container of everlasting oil.”

PORTRAIT AND FIGURE Figures and portraits complete this body of work, which bursts with emotion through bold lines and romantic rendering. This series ignites a sense of nostalgia and is imbued with Susan N. McCollough's signature shapes and warm colors. Each canvas is a walk through her memories and treasured moments. The artist contemplates the essence of emotional freedom and the celebration of the untold stories, the silence of transitions, and the whispers of life during each waking moment. McCollough's uplifting figurative compositions and portraits exhibit a masterful interplay of colors that reveal her ability to evolve through each stroke on the canvas.

“This painting was done some years back, when my husband and I moved from Birmingham, Alabama to the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama. It is not always easy to have a live model but I have found excellent subject matter and quality photos in National Geographic publications. This young girl’s photo was captured at a celebration in India. The painting created from her portrait now hangs on the wall in the waiting room of The McCollough Institute for Appearance and Health and is also on the cover of THE APPEARANCE FACTOR, a consumer’s guide used by the Institute for patient information regarding surgical and non-surgical procedures. The book was written by Dr. E. Gaylon McCollough and is now in its thirteenth edition.”

“‘Dottie’ is a quick study of a portrait in oil of my Mother, Dorothy, nicknamed Dottie. Here she was in her late eighties and then passed away at the age of 92 in 2011. She was a self-taught artist in her early days and in her later years studied in one or two workshops. Dottie always had art books in our home and music from operas. She loved learning and taught us about the great artists from The Renaissance to the artist of today. Her favorite artists were Toulouse Lautrec and Salvador Dali. She loved Broadway and her music filled our home from Peter and the Wolf, to opera, and musicals from the Broadway theater. My family were all born in New York. We moved later to the south where my brother Joel and I grew up I was five or six and he was two years older. Therefore, we would always go back every summer to visit our grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousins. We grew up with the love of theater and attending art museums, thanks to our Mother Dottie. She gave us love and so much more. She is so loved and missed every day!”

He sat for his portrait for two weeks. He proudly served as the director of the gallery. He retired a month before his passing at 100 years and six months of age. The character of the people that come across—in person—or in my mind, I imagine their story feel a compelling desire to paint their faces. SELLA Mixed Media, 48”X60” - 2013 Permanent Collection, University of Alabama; Clark Hall “Due to his raw personality, I thought it befitting to keep the raw canvas and use only slight color and shadowing. It was representational of how strong he was in his beliefs in art, along with the blacks and reds, it aided in summing up this dynamic artist.”

“The ‘Sella’ painting was a commissioned piece for The University of Alabama. It was Dean Bob Olin, Dean of Arts and Sciences from the University, who contacted me. This painting was to honor Alvin Sella, Professor of Abstract Art and my mentor and later in life a long-time friend. The painting now hangs in Clark Hall in perpetuity. Even though Sella taught other art courses, I studied abstract art under his mentorship. In contemplating what piece of work I would do to honor him, I initially felt that I should paint an abstract. I wrestled with this for two weeks thinking through the process. It never occurred to me to do anything but an abstract. Until approximately 2:00 a.m. I woke up and knew exactly what I would paint. I remembered a photo that my husband Gaylon took one afternoon when we were visiting Alvin, (better known as Al) in his studio. As we were leaving the studio, Gaylon said, “let me take a picture of you and Al)”. So, I had the picture. It could not have been any better. We were standing together and he had his bike, (which was just as famous as he was). Everyone knew him and everyone saw him always riding his bicycle. Al was a strong personality. Most of his students were anxious in his classes because they never wanted to disappoint him. He expected the best and nothing less was acceptable. You were never late and never unprepared. I too was on edge in his class; but regardless everyone wanted to be in his classes. It was not until after I graduated and came back to campus to pay him a visit did Al and I become friends. Gaylon and I enjoyed many wonderful evenings with him. I am proud to say that Al was not only my mentor but became my friend. He is sorely missed.”

THE FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE Oil On Canvas, 60”X48” - 2016

“‘The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate’ was painted from a photo from the movie. The setting was aboard a ship.”

There is something quite majestic about this piece by Susan McCollough. The man dressed in all black is surrounded by a beautiful eastern background and appears in a somewhat pensive gaze. The artist paid keen attention to detail in this painting, each stroke correctly calculated, as seen in the calligraphy on the overhead lamp, which she does with high accuracy. The piece follows with her characteristic figurative style, she achieves a perfect balance of black and white, with just the right amount of lighting to enhance the realism and spatial dimensions of the piece.

“This painting was inspired by oriental figures that are sometimes incorporated in home décor. In our home, we have four such figurines. And, 2:00 a.m. while sipping coffee I looked at them and thought, “It might be fun to paint them. So, the very next day, as I studied the 4’ by 6’ blank canvas before me, I realized I needed to have one extra figure in order to fill the six feet horizontal canvas. In looking at their faces I saw Wisdom, Kindness, Knowledge, Charity and I decided to add the fifth one: Honesty.”

DRAWINGS AND COLLAGES Susan N. McCollough's collage, charcoal, and ink works on paper reach out to her international audience. She draws from her travels and multicultural experiences to produce this series. Her drawings from the early years of her career showcase strong line work and rendering, almost predicting the successful journey of the artist. They represent an initial repertoire of images and forms that manages to stay fresh with a new discovery of elements each time the viewer has a chance to examine them. For her collages, the artist pulls materials from books, newspapers, and magazines found during her trips around the world, before manipulating and incorporating them into the final pieces. This body of works depicts fun characters like "Papa Pasquale" or events during history. Her early practice combines a variety of source material and textures, providing an alternate route of development for the artist.
