A Message from our Editor-in-Chief Dear reader,

Some of my favorite memories . . .

I wish to thank you for your immense support during these nine years of ArtTour International Magazine. This publication could not survive, let alone thrive, without your loyal contributions. I also would like to thank our incredible team of inspiring cocreators who, issue after issue, pour their gifts, dedication, and commitment into the fulfillment of our vision. The 2000s was quite a fantastic decade for us. We started this publication in 2011, and nine years later, ArtTour International is stronger than ever and growing steadily. Our dreams have evolved, and our vision is now more evident than ever. We want to give voice to artists who work to make this world a better place, particularly in the realms of human rights and environmental issues. Moving forward, as Editor-in-Chief, I would like to start the new decade with a transformative vision for ArtTour International Magazine. These changes are part of my ambition to make an award-winning publication that impacts our world. Our mission is to make sure that we spread the message of artists who are writing history and bringing awareness to shape humanity.

December 2012 - Anniversary celebration of the first year of ArtTour International Magazine. Above, Alan and I with my amazing father in law Massimo Grimandi and my mother in law Giuseppina Careddu. The support of our family has contributed greatly to make this publication a reality.

The dreamers, the provokers, the inspirators, those portraying beauty and realities - all are welcome at Arttour International. They are the force behind this publication, and we will continue to support their causes and missions. ArtTour International will remain an artist-run publication in its original multi-media format, both printed and online, as well as including the popular ArtTour International Show, which offers the artistic community a platform on the small screen. The show airs every Thursday at 5:30 pm on Spectrum 1993- MNN-HD in New York City, or you can catch us on the Livestream of the channel MNN.org News! Our Social Media Management department has officially opened its doors, and now art organizations and artists can take advantage of our expertise to help manage their Social Media pages. Our services help creative entrepreneurs spend more time growing their business and creating their art. We are also opening the doors to corporate advertising. This will happen with organizations whose mission aligns with that of ArtTour International Magazine and its artists.

August 2014 - Yadira Roman, ATIM’s Managing Editor and I during our first visit to the Sahara Desert. This trip inspired my devotion for mother earth and the birth our special issues of Artists For A Green Planet, which later developed into its own entity www.artistsforagreenplanet.org .

The long-awaited podcast will roll out the second semester of this year. Featuring the artists in the magazine, our podcast will be a source of inspiration that you will enjoy. I wish you all my very best for the New Decade. Let's write history! Let's make this world a better place, love mother earth, aim for peace, and create a beautiful future for generations to come. Stay inspired!

or the last few years, American artist Barbara Tyler Ahlfield has worked directly with her subjects to create artworks that engage viewers with the limits and wonder of human connection to all aspects of life. Ahlfield has

seamlessly transitioned from being a prolific fashion illustrator to a highly esteemed contemporary artist. Fashion has been an immense influence in her artistic ventures, and as she evolves, so does her art, now reflecting

the mysticism in natural settings, and human figures. There is a beautiful sensuality to Ahlfield's luscious figurative paintings. Her subjects are often presented with animals beside them and rendered with vibrant color. The masterful work on the cover of our anniversary issue, "Aquatic Highway," conceptually drives the focus into exotic sea life in color harmony. There is an alluring quality to the subjects in this new style of painting for Ahlfield. It is illuminated with bold highlights that take center stage over softly blended layers. The contrast of ornate detail with the depth of background creates an exciting resonance, with both strong contours and soft, expressive lines. "Aquatic Highway" is refreshing with cool tones. While displaying her signature style one can't help but become enticed by the beauty of her female figures with their dramatic poses and admire the background which adorns the beauty of her subjects. This skillful execution enhances the realism of each large scale canvas in her portfolio. Painting thinly and sparingly and applying glazes, the artist acquires the appropriate values, colors, and softened edges, finding power in the accuracy of her portraiture. She prefers the use of graphite pencil combined with India ink line, colored pencil, watercolor, gouache, and oils and applies highly saturated, vibrant tones of pigment in delicate textured Cont. layers with masterful use of light, shape, tone, color, texture, and form. With a strong foundation in art training, Ahlfield studied at The Ohio State University, Columbus College of Art & Design, and the Schuler School of Fine Art. As a fashion illustrator, her roster of clients has included very recognized firms like Coty, Carlisle, Dillards, Foleys, Garfinkels, Hutzler's, Joskes, Lord & Taylor, Marshall Fields, Marshalls, Nordstrom, and J. Wanamaker's. As lead fashion illustrator for Lord & Taylor, she saw her double-page illustrations in the Sunday edition of the New York Times. "I have been honing my skills in 'romancing' the human face and form for many years . . . my expertise is in capturing my subjects at their beautiful/handsome best, while still being instantly recognizable with their essence intact." lined, and laced patterns that require keen attention, and applied accessories with a quiet presence to them. Every aspect of her work has a role, gracing her audience with the luxury of beauty. Apart from her classical environments that are telling of a bygone era that accentuated the quality of

life, she chooses natural settings that bring each painting to life. Natural elements and details such as the change of a season, or charisma in a city bring to life her dreamy scenes. During her extensive career, Ahlfield has received several honors, including the NORMA award for lingerie advertising and cosmetic advertising, the Seklemian award for reflective color advertising, the Federated Dept. Store advertising award (Lazarus Division-three consecutive years), and she is a member of the Society of Illustrators. She was named one of the top 50 new international artists by Art Business News magazine in 2014. This year, Ahlfield has been chosen as an "Artist of The Year" at the Top 60 Masters 2019 Awards by ArtTour International Magazine, an honor presented to her during the ATIM Masters Award at the Museum of Art and Design in New York. We are happy to have her as this year's Cover Artist, honoring our Sacred Waters through an awe-worthy rendition of life under the sea.

nne D. Grandin’s work explores the connection of all life forms in synchronized harmony. The American artist's inspiration draws heavily from Native American culture, especially its emphasis on evolution. Grandin's works can be best described as an abstract expressionist, her primary media of choice are oil paint and acrylic on canvas, though she may occasionally use charcoal on paper. An astute mastery of color is instantly recognizable in her paintings. A careful selection of various hues and skillful blending of gradients create a dazzling combination of both realism and mysticism rife with emotion.

essence. The shifting and ebbing of these shapes portray a supernatural euphony; her drawings culminate in a simple message of peace. Some of her work takes on forms where natural elements interact in unique ways. Her scope of imagination is limitless, and she is not afraid to challenge the ordinary. Visually pleasing aesthetics and organic, earthy colors draw the viewer closer to nature, Grandin's exhibits stunning waterscape and landscape paintings. She has also written a book entitled, "Circle of Life – A Spiritual Journey of an Artist and her Message of Peace."

Armen Sarvazyan

A

rmen Sarvazyan is an artist, scientist, engineer, and inventor. As a scientist, Armen has authored over 100 patents and 200 scientific publications and received numerous prestigious awards for his research work. In the last decade, Armen’s creative interests were equally distributed between art and science. In parallel with his research activities, Armen’s quest to understand Nature inspired him to express her beauty in a variety of media, including wood, stone, concrete, graphics, and outdoor installations. Recently, Armen exhibited sculptures in several art galleries in Chelsea, Manhattan. In his New Jersey property, Armen has built a personal art gallery, named the Temple of Arts where he displays most of his work. The aim of Armen as an artist is to elucidate Nature’s beauty and perfection through his artwork. In both investigating scientific problems and creating artistic works, Armen seeks to understand and honor Nature. His artwork aims to illuminate the hidden beauty in ordinary things. Armen’s sculptures intended for outdoor display merge organically with their surrounding landscape to create a natural exhibition. Often Armen tries to communicate particular philosophical messages to his audience through art so that the message reaches someone through the heart rather than the brain. One of the manifestations of Nature’s beauty that Armen has chosen to explore extensively in his work is that of the female form. Armen has been able to express the remarkable feminine beauty in a variety of ways, both in material (wood, marble, concrete, metal) and in form (a mother and her child, a pregnant woman, the female body). The amicable and focused relationship that Armen’s artistry has managed to develop with nature shows just how much hidden beauty and meaning there is in our world and our experience within it.

DeSerres has a distinct style of choosing angles as if searching for a natural reflection of her subject in the environment, building up layers of images before settling on a surface—the depth revealing something palpable. capturing movement in the background through the fluidity created in the detail of a pond, while drawing in focus to a fading image of flowers. Thus, keeping just enough clear focus to honor the views gifted by nature. DeSerres doesn't intend to slow down anytime soon and continues to be inspired and inspire us all by her art.

ransformationalism is a well-chosen word for the millennialism. Every end of the century has met doubt and theological fear, and we have just been rounding a millennial, which has been marked by a technological revolution and massive religious wars and climate debate. The most important role for visual artists has always been to witness the development in the culture, to make people think and reflect over their lives, and that's how I see myself: A representative witness to a transforming culture, where there is something about everything. We are load with such a volume of information that we get so heavy that we must sit down and better with a helmet on to make sure that we are not getting hurt by some unforeseen accident."

Who creates who? "There are times where the painting creates itself! Without having the slightest idea - what I just painted yesterday happens today! My painting is my guideline, though not even I understand the direction myself. That's why I and my art are two sides of the same coin and become what we become through an internal dialogue between me and my painting. My primary mission in art is to make my art be a picture of the time I'm a part of. That each of my artworks as a two-edged sword cuts a piece of myself and the world that made me."

In my patented process, I use photographic constructions, a single often abstracted image is layered over itself on clear acrylic surfaces and superimposed on a subtle grid. The resulting visual phenomenon infuses the image with a sense of dimensionality and fluidity affected by such changes as the angle of viewing and light. However, perceptual mechanics are only part of the equation. Equally essential are universal principles of design that produce qualities we perceive as beauty. This is my aim: to combine technology and aesthetics in a way that expands the viewer's experience of photographic art. "

Jelena Rukavina Rukavina is a contemporary painter who lives and works in Wellington, New Zealand. When you look at the first abstract paintings/prints of Jelena Rukavina, you turn back to the Jveryelena basics of modernist art, the interplay of lines, shapes, colors; you feel the power of these structural elements as those most fundamental forces of nature that shape us. The motive of water or a wave is tranquil, contemplative, and fluid in its nature, in both its form and its meaning. The moments of water movements, wave motions as well as the rhythms of their moves are the

creators of a continuous but u n f o r t u n a t e l y, e p h e m e ra l spectacle. This is captured in Jelena's paintings. She acquired academic art training through secondary and higher education from an early age and is now inspired by the elusive nature of water, revealing her intuitive side.

anice Alamanou specializes in Fine Art Photography; her passion started at a very young age. Images taken at the age of 12 are published in the book 'A Personal Account of Time & Tide' - an insight into the destruction and devastation of tidal surges on the North Norfolk Coast, including her home twice. What advice would you give yourself ten years ago as an artist? "I would advise the same to any artist - enjoy and love what you do - the highs and the lows. Realize what the lows are and create from both. See the same in others and from this create with beauty, passion, and meaning. Listen to opinions, even if you disagree. The more knowledge, the better equipped we are to transfer this into our art and study your media and hone the skills to use them to the best effectiveness." What intention would you like to set for the next ten years? "In the next ten years, I would like to take all the skills I have learned over the years to create some outstanding pieces. Something worthy to be left behind in years to come, and that may be remembered in the future. With my newest photography with precious metals, I would like to create new unique pieces that resemble our world and where we are at this time. New amalgamations in the Soul Elements Collection also and new pieces for The White Collection - all of which highlight the beauty of our varied environment and people."

“Trees - Colours of Life” Hand Gilded With 24Ct Gold and Copper, 32” X 32”

What are the core fundamentals themes of your work in the past, and now in the present? "I began with landscape and seascape photography. My love for the environment was triggered at a very young age, depicting my surroundings, and later developing this into panoramic, multiple images stitched together. I went on to include portraiture and fine art nudes, my passion for people and their lives - a constant source of inspiration and intrigue, and the next natural step from this was to amalgamate the two passions into my 'Soul Elements' Collection. I now do each separately and together. My newest work is going back to the landscape and cityscapes but creating in a predominantly white - The White Collection. Ultimately I have my 'Photography with Precious Metals' Collection. Photography with 24Ct Gold, palladium, and copper - hand gilded. These are unique and pioneering pieces. The concept of the pieces, including copper, is that the image will verdigris and continue to change within the picture itself. Each step from landscape to portraiture, fine art nudes to amalgamations with the environment, back to the environment in whites, and photography with precious metals have all been my work evolving over the years. The core fundamental theme is and has always been the environment and people."

ean-Jacques Porret is a seeker of expansion, and knowledge-he chooses to embody this through art. Though he studied engineering, art has always had a special place in his heart. Entirely dedicated to the craft of sculpting, he uses Bronze as his preferred medium to convey his artistic impulses. Porret’s work, at first glance, captures focus with its smooth motions. He expresses a personal connection with Bronze, highlighting the special attention required by Bronze when casting and its responsiveness to even the slightest touch. Over the years, Porret has mastered the lost-wax process to crystallize his vision of honoring what it is to be a sculptor. His works are graceful, bold, elegant, and seamless. They replicate the harmony of blissful moments while exhibiting a sense of escalated movement in each figure. The result of his imagination manifests in ebullient forms that are mostly human figures. The sculptures are shrouded in grace as each movement seems intentional with the perfect balance of “Lady of the Night: Edition of 3” Bronze, Size 21 in Height

John Nieman

“If the Shoe Fits” Installation, Watercolor

A

by Daniel Limo

merican artist John Nieman is perhaps best known for harnessing the power of words in his art and using catchy phrases to challenge ideas of power, identity, and humanitarian issues. His portfolio spans from installation art to frames with a story; he skillfully combines pastel and watercolors to achieve photorealistic effects. Nieman has an extensive career that spans over 30 years as both an artist and author; his books often used as a reference in Creative Writing College settings.

Nieman's "Wanted" series is a prime example of sparking curiosity and bringing forth inspiration through the remembrance of positive figures through history in culture. "What is Missing" was a high impact installation in which Nieman used milk cartons to focus on the statistics of missing children. Nieman's forte is his ability to capture the depth of emotion and reaction in each project. In the span of his career, Nieman has exhibited notable advancement in his style, and technique always venturing into new forms of expression, stagnancy has never been an issue for him, a curious multifaceted artist with an impressive portfolio. "Art can never be static. That's not to say that the exploration of a style shouldn't be pursued to the hilt. It's just tough to know when it is time for the next big thing. As a painter and a writer, I have always been partial to art that somehow tells a story. Perhaps that's why in my early days. I developed a style that combines words and images. I found that the images could provide an immediate impact and a residual mental tickle. But despite my success in this genre, I have found in the last decade that art can never be static. The artist has to keep pushing himself to explore new boundaries and new challenges. My first foray into the unfamiliar was to create a series of "Wanted" poster—not of people that should be arrested, but the type of people we need more than ever. This led to even bigger explorations. I explored "Private Lives"—a series of large paintings against a large brick wall frame, reminiscent of the movie "Rear Window" and captured the voyeuristic thrill of looking into someone's window. Even bigger projects followed. I discovered installations. My first one was a take-off on those milk cartons that used to advertise missing children, like Etan Patz. I interpreted it as missing American values (modesty, compromise, monogamy), and built a milk cooler to house the exhibition. It has been shown in Art Basel, Geneva, Florence, and Manhattan. My most recent installation is called "If

merican Master Artist Jim Fitzpatrick exhibits emotive portraits and natural settings with a human narrative behind them. He aims to capture much more than the beauty or outer shell of his subjects and instead provides a gateway into the intricacies of feelings. His works demonstrate a p r o f o u n d l ove f o r n a t u r e a n d humanity and an ardent determination to capture the entirety of it in photographs, drawings, and paintings.

What advice would you give yourself ten years ago as an artist? "To always be open to learning and trying new things and improving my techniques for creating realistic portrait drawings as well as continuing to improve on my photography. Also, to purchase a much higher quality camera and zoom lens to help me capture much higher quality photographs. It will be an expensive investment, but it will be well worth it! " What intention would you like to set for the next ten years? "I hope to continue to improve and refine my techniques but also to focus more on creating works that will hopefully touch and bring meaning to others. This has been one of the most significant evolution as an artist and photographer that I've started to go through! It's something I want to focus on and continue to experiment with and improve. I'm not getting any younger and know too well, nothing last forever so while I still have an opportunity to create I want to use my life experiences (of being a former professional Roller Derby skater, firefighter, reserve police officer, dreamer, husband, father. etc.) interests and love of creating art and photography to not only entertain but inspire others especially those suffering with chronic pain, somethings I've been faced with for years. ArtTour International has been an enormous blessing for me, not only motivating me to continue creating and improving but also giving me an international platform to showcase my works!" What are the core fundamental themes of your work in the past, and now in the present? "In the past, I mainly focused on trying to draw realistic-looking portraits as well as the photography of people, animals, and sports. Now I've broadened my works to include digital abstracts. I've also evolved into creating a wide variety of storytelling works and scenes created by combining my portrait drawings with my photography, showing the wonder, beauty, and even the tragedy people experience in life. Despite so many in the media trying to spread fear and distrust or stir the pot of hatred, along with those people who are filled with anger and negativity, often eager to "fight" or insult others from the safety of their computer; I want to convey with my works that there still is good, beauty, wonder, and hope in the world! My next two images feature birds that are on the endangered species list, such as Flamingoes and Bald Eagles, surrounded by underwater realms teeming with life that includes marine plants and animals.

During the four decades of my career as an academic and social issues activist, I have been producing art that brings attention to these issues. At this time, our Mother Earth is experiencing significant climate change problems that have been aggravated to the point of being critical to her survival. I feel that artists have an obligation to fight for Mother Earth, and plan to continue to create art that supports these vital issues. Katrin Alvarez

C

ontemporary German expressionist Katrin Alvarez has a fresh and uninhibited approach to art. She creates metaphorically charged imagery that gives voice to the harsh realities of child abuse, and her growing efforts to continue to be an advocate for surviving victims.

Her subjects brim with intensity and power, and skillfully applied spacial elements give her viewers time to reflect and take in her message. Alvarez has an acute eye for detail, even with a flat surface created by her soft and warm palette; she is successful in highlighting the many layers and reactions in each story she shares through the use of depth in her fascination with shapes. She primarily uses oils, but often incorporates the use of objects to illustrate the manipulation of technology into each theme. Alvarez exhibits a stunning grasp on the structure of images and lands a poetic display of metaphorical combinations between animals, objects, and human relationships. She does not steer away from issues that are of great importance to her. She has led an impressive career driven by her transparency, and direct attitude about her own experiences and continued desire to do more for critical humanitarian issues. Alvarez paints all that makes life both beautiful and painful; through her bursting imagination, she continues to exhibit the dualities of our world. "The ability to make thoughts and feelings visible by means of my paintings, that means the highest value in my life."

Alvarez's "The Human Digital" series breaks away from her usual commentary on social issues. Her latest works delineate the remarkable relationship between humans and technology.; a somewhat novel relationship that has morphed into interdependence. Just like in her previous works, her subjects are still bold and pronounced and not just for visual appreciation, but to provoke thought and relay a particular message to her viewers. Details remain paramount in her latest collection. She meshes human elements with electrical components like circuit boards. In doing so, she accentuates the growing dependence of humanity to technology and how technology

has impacted our livelihoods. Alvarez renders her paintings with purpose and intent. She meticulously calculates each stroke to reflect her intuitiveness and accurately bring out her subject matter. In several works such as "It's all a question of technology," showcased on the back cover of this issue, she exhibits parts of her human subjects meshed into technological elements to become part of the piece of technology. This fusing shows how human nature, which is a far cry from technical nature, can become substantially similar.

Alvarez's striking often thought-provoking subjects, rendered in vivid colors and precise brush strokes, evoke dream imagery, and defy natural interpretation. Her groundbreaking style of vibrant background colors against paler figurine-like human characters immediately captures the interest of the viewer, invited to explore the surrealistic connections to the consuming addiction further, and a kind of slavery, to the world's use of technology. Her inclusion of

awrence Armstrong is an award-winning American contemporary artist who uses his knowledge and creativity in architecture to create masterful works. He gets inspiration from flashes of light that appear to him spontaneously, which are triggered by sensory influences. The unannounced inspirations derived from the natural environment, architect drawings, pieces of music, and his numerous travel experiences all over the world. He presents his work in small series and the pieces frequently come out in rapid succession after the first flash. Armstrong's paintings and sculptures represent the ongoing tension that exists between opposing forces. The opposing forces one finds within the themes of emotion, intellect, and paradigms such as chaos and order, solid and void, simplicity and complexity, shapes among many others, all of which are fascinated by the natural and built environment and the forces in space and time.

“Emergence” Layered Metal, 27” X 16”

The Layered Vision work is ongoing scrutiny of the concept of layers. Armstrong explores the depth of layers by connecting visual essentials through color, form, shapes, and texture. He uses unique details to grab the attention of viewers by highlighting elements that were buried in the background. Many pieces of the layered vision work involve the square shapes drawn in bold black colors. In this series, Armstrong shows the concept of forms, how they can interact and intersect to create harmony and beauty.

His education has been a considerable influence in his work as

well as his livelihood in urban environments. Throughout his 45 years as an artist, LeRoi has tweaked and refined his style, exhibiting exploring pre-colonial and post-colonial African heritage and pan-Africanism. He fuses these elements with dazzling colors in electrical frenzies. The result is stunning visuals that accentuate the subject of his paintings and adorn the simplistic beauty of traditional African artistry. Using acrylic and oil paints on canvas, LeRoi reflects his tremendous knowledge, experiences, and creative ideas in dazzling, interspersed colors. His early works adopt a subtle autobiographical theme that is telling of his early childhood down to his mature years. His works are a perfect blend of cubism and African, Caribbean, and South American influences. A strong mastery of colors in its various hues is evident in his pieces. This quality, coupled with ingenious geometric abstractions, broad knowledge of African heritage, and firsthand experiences, make LeRoi's works stand out amongst the crowd. y journey to become an artist is the result of unsuccessful attempts to express myself through poetry writing and music composing. After the biggest financial defeat of my life in 2010-11, I lost everything I owned and everyone who loved me! Not only had I failed those who cared about me, who believed and trusted in me, but I had also failed myself ... (this part of my life is a description of how to fail oneself and sink so deep into the endless darkness) ...I needed (or had to) have an anchor to hold on to in life, to fight defeat and rise again. It was this journey that brought me to art. ‘My thoughts run wild tonight they are like wild dogs painful sins have gathered next to the wine glass now it should be bestowed like a celebration of my ruins ... There are times like this I will bend time and space

and come to your dreams remove the distance between two lost souls created through millions of years of tenderness and stay with you under the echo of the birth of the time ‘

As a person, I am well known for being someone who does things their own way, rather than following others. While I love many great characters including great artists, I do not follow their footsteps; they are just starting points in my perceptions and understanding. My particular interest in fractals is based on the fact that I believe nothing exists in the way we perceive it, and everything that exists, or existence can be confirmed based on the repetition of the smallest particle, simple shapes, fractals. That mindset (which is the driving force behind my visual art) started when I first saw "Electron microscope" images of butterflies and

“I

think of my work as celebrating the spirit of the ‘inner child’ through an improvisational eviscerated and evocative energy. I feel this expressive energy retained in the strokes, lines, forms and colors encompassing their fleeting application, yet everlasting presence. Over the past decade, I have enjoyed exhibits in New York City and Dublin and have also been able to use my art to assist various fundraising efforts. I have come to conceptualize my work as a bridge between fantasy and abstract reality that I have seen challenge peoples' thoughts, perceptions, follies and wits, and most of all, bring joy to those that have exhibited and purchased my artworks."

was born in Ciudad Real, Spain. The environment in which I lived and trained professionally, both as a person and as a professional, decisively influenced the creation within the world of art, in a very personal style and different from what exists, which I have called Rivismo. Over the past ten years, I have continued research to reinforce the concepts and philosophies that predominate in Rivismo. My works have been exhibited in Spain, China (Shanghai), Italy (Florence), and in the United States (New York). They occupy permanent spaces in several museums, among

them, in Spain and Denmark. The written media and, above all, the Webs, Blogs, and Social Networks, have contributed to publicizing my artistic proposal, possibly to several million people."

Sam Dobrow

S

am Dobrow’s Mystic Collection is an evolving body of work comprised of surreal visions that depict mystical female characters. Mystic stretches the boundaries of photography farther than anything Sam Dobrow has done to date. Dobrow’s mystical characters take us on spiritual journeys that bring us to question the meaning of our existence. Not only are his landscapes transformed into spiritual places, but his figures are icons of feminine beauty, flawless in every way. Dobrow’s mystical worlds are parallel universes to the world we know. They coexist with our society but in a different dimension of time and space. We are transported to this world that seems familiar but isn’t. Its places we’ve been but have never seen. Its things we’ve seen but could not touch. Dobrow gives form to the extraterrestrial female. Beautifully enchanting, seductive, and hypnotic. Our feelings evolve from primordial instincts. Deep in our subconscious lies a burning desire, an erotic encounter, and a frightening gesture. Sam Dobrow applies many of the art techniques in Mystic that he employs in his Surreality Collection, including melting landscapes, starry skies, and moody color schemes. Sam goes further in creating an altered reality by combining images to tell a story that unfolds in the mind of the viewer. Although influenced by the darkroom arts of Jerry Uelsmann, Sam Dobrow does not merely create imaginary objects. He conjures up imaginary worlds where his subjects melt, and concepts evade articulation.

Ric Conn

R

by Yadira Roman

ic Conn is an American expressionist master artist who focuses primarily on figurative depictions of the feminine essence. He is inspired to empower and look into the experiences women face in Western culture. Utilizing oil, acrylics, gouache, charcoal, and ink to exhibit the many forms and textures of the female body and often portraying women with symbolic animal motifs and applying a soft and muted palette, creating space for his audience to entirely focus on his subjects. Conn's work is a modern take on expressionism, using his unique method of evoking emotion and reaction as he tackles relevant topics through subtle additions to each canvas. His work with shape and the usage of enclosed space drives the many layers of his message through his use of texture, Conn's work carries a great deal of depth. "I believe in equality, and I want my work to reflect that. The stories in my paintings are situations that can happen to anyone. I paint them from the female perspective because, unfortunately, women are still mistreated. Since I am a man and the subjects of my paintings are women, I attempt to show equality because the stories can, and sometimes have, happened to me as well."

Yu-Whuan

I

n this new work of paintings and conceptual works, Yu-Whuan writes time, in a manner of speaking, as it arrives, each moment with its attitude. Spending time out in nature, she has said, is something that goes wild in her art. This show includes such raw expression with its signature piece, a full wall “sign,” a complete moment of the kind of encounter with “now” that the artist has likened to her experience of eating wild mangosteen in the mountains. This range of work signals the interpenetrating rhythms and moments of meeting that exemplify the artist’s love of how nature, with time, makes its own culture. Yu-Whuan’s wide-ranging art explores the relationship between nature and culture in her sculpture, paintings, drawings, photographs, and installations. Her work, while bold and direct, includes mystery, gentle humor, and a philosophical aspect. Her process plays with the work of seeing, bringing a deft touch to potent human passions and dilemmas, in a way akin to sunlight on a tree.
