The Collection of the late Judith & Bruce Terry
Judith and Bruce Terry shared a love of collecting and travel. This passion would take them to London and regional England, sometimes twice a year, where they would attend the exhibitions of many of the most prestigious antique-dealerships, such as Partridge and Mallett, whose clientele included many of the world’s wealthiest antique collectors acquiring exceptional furniture for grand homes in the UK and Europe, as well as America.
Judith and Bruce secured many fine pieces in the 1970s and 1980s at a time when not many Australian antique collectors were buying on the International market in such a way.
Bruce was very well-known in vintage and classic car circles, but Judith also shared this
love of great British cars and together they owned and drove fabulous examples by RollsRoyce, Jaguar, as well as those by Triumph and MG to name just a few. These they housed in a separate property opposite Teychel in Moule avenue, with exceptional and purpose-built garaging facilities. Building was in Bruce’s blood. He was a self- made man and was very successful in first building, and then developing, properties around Melbourne.
Judith was also very successful as a fashion model under her maiden name Judith Baker and she had a love of interior design. It was Judith that was the driving force of collecting the antiques and the art and putting it all together stylishly at their Brighton home. Her
love of European houses and landscapes is evident both in the way Teychel was developed as a property with its Italianate influences and also in the collection itself with a strong focus on European art.
Judith and Bruce Terry’s daughter Bettina and son Gavin grew up at Teychel and being surrounded by this collection seemed normal to them in their youth, as they played around the property, with its glorious beach-front position. Summer memories that will stay with them for life. But time moves on for everyone and so now the property is being sold, as is the collection of art and antiques, that will go on to grace other collections here in Australia and Internationally.

144
A very rare Chelsea porcelain floral and bird in landscape painted blue and white glazed lobed circular plate from the Mecklenberg Strelitz service, English, circa 1763/5
This exceptionally grand service was completed in March 1765; it marks a change in the custom of using silver to furnish dining tables by including ceramic candelabra and the large centrepiece although they retain metalwork shapes. This is not surprising given the manager of the Chelsea Porcelain Factory at the time was the silversmith Nicholas Sprimont (1716-71).
In October 1766 the traveller Thomas Nugent noticed among the other 'curiosities' in the palace at Neustrelitz 'a complete service of Chelsea porcelane, rich and beautiful in fancy beyond expression. I really never saw any Dresden porcelane near so fine; her Majesty made a present of this choice collection to the Duke her brother'. The Duke was Queen Charlotte's older brother, Adolphus Frederick IV, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1738-94).
There are 137 Chelsea pieces in the Royal Collection UK with five replacement pieces from the Königliche Porzellan-Manufactur, Berlin.
The dinner and dessert service, known as the Mecklenberg Service, was commissioned by King George III and Queen Charlotte, by whom it was presented to her brother, Adolphus Frederick IV, Duke of Mecklenberg-Strelitz in 1764. Other pieces from this famous service belonged to legendarty art dealer Sir Joseph Duveen and James Oakes by whom it was presented to HM Queen Elizabeth, 1947 for her Silver Wedding anniversary.
