Robert Jacks AO (1943 – 2014) We are delighted to present this exhibition of wonderful artworks by Robert Jacks, being the third catalogue that we have produced to date for this important artist. Robert Jacks is widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading abstract colourists. Order and Variation was the ground-breaking retrospective of Robert Jacks life as an artist which was held at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2014/15. This exhibition cemented his reputation and was seen by a very large audience at that time. In his review of this important exhibition highly respected art critic John McDonald drew attention to how Robert Jacks drew his inspiration from artists such as Brancusi and Picasso, Miró and Arp. In his review of this major exhibition and writing in the Sydney Morning Herald on November 8th 2014, McDonald commented: "In the sensuous silhouette of a guitar or the subtle juxtapositions of colour in a grid, he (Jacks) was revisiting his life’s work, constructing a summa and testament for a career in which the analytical impulse strove for dominance with an irrepressible sense of beauty”. Jacks as a young artist had demonstrated that abstract art need not be burdened with tragic overtones: it could be light and free, full of colour and dancing rhythms. Jacks understood colour better than most and with it, how to make a powerful impression on the viewer, stimulating a range of instinctive, emotional responses.

Robert Jacks was represented in the famous exhibition The Field, at the NGV in 1968 which was both groundbreaking and controversial in its era. Jacks always had an awareness of the world around him, especially with the era’s progressive art movements. He immersed himself within the avant-garde thinking of the day and this was evident in his work throughout his life. From the minimalist works inspired by New York city art culture of the late 1960s and 1970s, through to the vibrant and powerful large-scale works he produced in Sydney during the 1980s and beyond, Jacks never stopped assessing, recalibrating and moving forward. At the conclusion of his life, when you observe Jack's work from the mid to late 2000s you see an artist that stayed true to himself into his sixth decade as a practicing and exhibiting artist. Observing the paintings in this exhibition in 2022 they appear remarkably comfortable in our era and still powerfully contemporary. We are delighted to present this group of 20 works from the artists estate, many of which have not been exhibited in public before. In particular I would like to draw attention to the five jewel like works on masonite that we have included in this exhibition (Cat. no. 7–11). Very few of these works have been seen in public before and they have a wonderful lustre and vibrancy. We predict that these works will become keenly sought by collectors in the future.
