Welcome to Arundel Festival | 2016 This year’s Arundel Festival will offer an exciting mix of brand new events alongside traditional favourites and we at Arundel Castle are proud and honoured to be involved once again.

The Festival’s week-long cultural extravaganza rightly positions Arundel at centre stage of the UK arts scene, offering entertainment for all the family from a thrilling Dragon Boat Race along the River Arun to a bolstered Gallery Trail featuring more than 150 artists across 60 venues.

Arundel’s exceptional cuisine will be showcased this year with a roaming restaurant trail and a tour of Sussex’s vineyards. Visitors will also be treated to street entertainment, sporting events, a range of fantastic music and a focus on all things vintage on Bank Holiday Monday. We are delighted to welcome the GB Theatre Company back to Arundel Castle for 2016. The Collector Earl’s Garden will host the troupe for two classic al fresco Shakespeare performances; As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet. I would like to extend my thanks to the Festival committee and to each of the hardworking volunteers, who in only their second year, have delivered an impressive and inspiring event for our community. We look forward to welcoming visitors from far and wide to what is sure to be a sensational week in August.

Welcome from

www.arundelfestival.co.uk

The Mayor

I am very pleased to welcome you to Arundel for the 2016 Festival, many residents and regular Festival goers already know what’s in store, and first time visitors have much to discover and enjoy over the ten days. The Festival is ostensibly an Arts Festival covering music, theatre and the visual arts but it has evolved into so much more than this and incorporates many community events as well. The Arts elements are the mainstay of the programme and include “Murder and Music in Private Houses”, the Theatre and Gallery Trails as well as other performances within the Town and Castle. In total there are 247 events in the programme, 38% more than last year! Wow! The standard for many of these events is exceptionally high with acclaimed author Simon Brett, the Hanover Band and the National Open Art Competition all participating this year. The Festival is a charity, run by a committee of volunteers. As well as providing opportunities for the Rotary Club of Arundel and Arundel Scouts to raise charitable funds this year the Dragon Boat Race will raise funds for the Arundel Lido, a local charity hoping to expand their facilities in the near future. Other charities benefiting from events are the Friends of St Nicholas (via The Duck Race) and Riding for the Disabled (via Sporting Bears Club Rides). As a gateway to the South Downs National Park, it is great to see that there will be guided trails for both walkers and cyclists up into the Park. On Bank Holiday Monday, there will be a themed Vintage Day and I encourage everyone to come dressed up for the parade and competition for best dressed! Finally, I would like to thank the committee for all their hard work in organising the Festival, it is the culmination of many weekly meetings over the last year.

James Stewart Mayor of Arundel

The Ezycal iPhone app for 2016 This year for the first time, we are introducing an app developed by a local company which will enable users to follow the Arundel Festival events. Once installed, following the Arundel Festival via the app will keep you informed of what is going on, when it is happening and will notify you of any updates to our program. You can also use the app to share what is going on with your friends and family. We are excited to offer this new and innovative technology, which we hope will help festival-goers get the best out of their visit to Arundel. You can download the ‘ezycal’ iPhone app at www.itunes. com/apps/ezycal or just click on the red circle icon on our website. See ads on Pages 23 and 64. 7

The picture shows this year’s Festival Committee all of whom are unpaid volunteers. From left to right, Bill Brennan (Chairman), Michael Tu, Gill Farquharson (Marketing and PR) , Graham Lane (Logistics), Linda Clark (Street Entertainment and Events), Jacqueline Curtis (Secretary) and Chris Boustead (Treasurer). If you have any feedback or suggestions please feel free to tell them – all feedback is valuable. The committee aren’t the only people who give their time to ensure the Festival is success. The traders and businesses in the town have been enormously generous in giving prizes and vouchers for fundraising events. The individual event organisers have made sure that the Festival offers a wide variety of attractions across the arts and entertainment spectrum. Both groups deserve our thanks. The Festival Committee would also like to thank a number of individuals and organisations who have supported the Festival with time, or money, or both. They are listed on the right. A very big thank you to them all. 8

Murder and Music in Private Houses

SATURDAY 20 AUGUST 12 NOON – 2 PM MURDER AND MAYHEM AT THE COURT OF NERO

his talks about famous, and not-so-famous, trials through history. For his appearance at the Arundel Festival he has chosen a particularly gruesome 20th century English murder trial, one which has many of the trappings of a good Agatha Christie. He will take us up to the point when the jury retired to consider its verdict. Then we shall break for a glass of wine while we discuss and deliberate amongst ourselves. Finally Peter will tell us what the jury actually decided, and the extraordinary story of what happened next. Note: the name of the trial will not be disclosed in advance! 57 Maltravers Street. £10 to include wine.

Nero: emperor of Rome, homicidal maniac, selfproclaimed artistic genius. Attached to his inner circle, two of the strangest, most violent writers in the Western canon – dramatist and moralist Lucius Annaeus Seneca and his nephew, the epic poet Lucan. Classicist and performer James McKay discusses the role of suicide, murder and bodily outrage in Neronian literature, and reads substantial extracts from both authors in a range of translations, including brand new versions of his own. He also traces the lasting influence of these texts through Jacobean tragedy, the Grand Guignol and contemporary horror fiction. A fascinating look at the dark side of the classical tradition. 57 Maltravers Street. £10 to include wine and pie.

FRIDAY 26 AUGUST 6 PM THE ART OF CRIME WRITING

President of the Detection Club and holder of the Crime Writers Association’s highest accolade, the Diamond Dagger, Simon Brett is the author of 96 crime novels. In 2015 he was elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Literature, and for some years he has been on the committee of the Royal Literary Fund, which gives grants to writers who have fallen on hard times. On New Year’s Day this year he was appointed OBE for services to literature. Simon has said that he can’t remember a time when he didn’t want to write and we can’t remember a time when he has not delighted us. To have Blotto & Twinks, those delicious parodies of aristocratic ‘20s literary sleuths, to say nothing of the laconic Charles Paris, unpacked for us will be a real treat. 57 Maltravers Street. £10 to include wine.

Arundel Festival | 2016

A History of

Arundel Festival // Sian Lewis looks back at some of the highlights of past Festivals It started with a simple idea. A staging of the Bard’s work in the castle’s Tilting Yard to raise money for the Silver Jubilee celebrations. The one-off event sold out - as did the 120 extra tickets that went on sale.

In 1987, the Wildfowl Trust on Mill Road took a Gallic flight. The Trust Players staged The Prodigious Snob, an adaptation of the French playwright Moliere’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Sadly, Moliere himself

The next year it seemed like a jolly good idea to do it all again. Once again, tickets sold out.

Which is how, in 1979, the “Arundel Festival” was officially born. And what an entrance it made! The New Shakespeare Company from Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre staged William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in the castle’s Tilting Yard. Arundel master-of-arts Oliver Hawkins designed the Festival logo, which is still used today. The following year, it was back to the 1920s for a production of The Boyfriend. Ticket prices were the stuff of memories too – each one cost just £1. For those of you who can, cast your mind back to 1984…can you name any players from that year’s celebrity cricket match? New York came to town in 1985, when The Trust Players staged Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, which is inspired by an Ingmar Bergman film. According that year’s programme, champagne was “provided by Moet & Chandon”. Which suggests that it was free…oh, happy days! 16

was no longer around to play M. Jourdain as he had in the 1670s. So, a Mr. Frank Baker took on the role instead.

Forward wind to Monday 28th August 1989, and just £2 bought a ticket to the centennial celebration of Charlie Chaplin’s birth, during which the comedian’s early masterpieces were shown at the Priory Playhouse on London Road. This was also the year that the first ever Arundel Gallery Trail saw houses around town open their doors to art lovers –and anyone of a nosy disposition…

www.arundel.org.uk

www.arundelfestival.co.uk

Maybe because it struggled to contain the festival’s stellar cast, the 2005 programme was the biggest yet – and since. Bursting from its pages were Romeo and Juliet’s doomed romance played out in the Castle’s Open Air Theatre, the strains of La Traviata from the Baron’s Hall and a firework concert by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Singer songwriter Katie Melua, whose album “Call Off The Search” was the UK’s biggest selling album of that year, also performed.

In 1991, a painting of the castle seen from Maltravers Street by Arundel architect and artist Neil Holland graced the festival programme cover. For the next three years, his paintings captured key scenes around town, including a rapt audience watching a play on the castle’s lower lawn. To celebrate 20 years of the festival, 1997 was a bumper year. As part of the Arundel Fringe – which merited its own programme – there was a “Spot the Idiot” event. To quote the programme: “This is a new feature of the Arundel Festival Fringe where you are looking for the most hilarious, ridiculous, idiotic, eccentric person or persons spotted in Arundel Square during the festival week.” Would that, could that, happen today? The first Street Theatre day was held in 1998, and was such a success that it was staged again in 1999, when The Times newspaper proclaimed this “The best of British festivals”. Writing in the festival programme, Major General The Duke of Norfolk KG GCVO CB CBE MC DL said, “The 1999 Arundel Festival brings for your enjoyment the most wide-ranging programme we have ever presented. In this, the year of our golden wedding anniversary, my wife and I wish you a very happy festival”. Actress and activist Vanessa Redgrave CBE led the cast of “Planet Without a Visa”, a programme of readings, monologues, songs and music on the subject of fractured society, refugees, exile and the dispossessed. That was Wednesday 1st September 1999, but it would no doubt be just as relevant today.

In 2007, Girls Aloud rocked the stage on the Lower Lawns. Sharing the bill were Jamelia, X Factor winner Shayne Ward, Alfie Boe and Level 42. Festival-goers got the chance to fly high in 2011, with balloon flights taking off from the Mill Road meadows and soaring over town. In 2012, the first ever children’s area was opened opposite Jubilee Gardens. There were music workshops, crafts and face painting – which probably attracted some older visitors too! Last year, the clever photo on the programme cover perfectly summed up the festival that we know today. An incredible 38 years after it first began, the Arundel Festival is now a fantastic mix of equal parts art, music, street theatre, kid’s fun and sporting events. 17

Street Entertainment 2016

This year we’ve pulled out all the stops to make our weekend street entertainment better than ever. A generous grant from Arundel Town Council has helped us to get some of the best in street entertainment in the South. This is just a taster!

DAN THE HAT

not to!” says Janice. The band now boasts more than of 40 members of all ages. From the sudos (players of the large drums) who provide the main beat for many of the pieces, to reps and snares who play some great rolling rhythms and the high pitched tams, bells and shakers – they all play their part in creating the sweet sound of samba music.

RENEGADE DOGS

Dan is a comedian and juggler - a truly funny man with a whole host of skills. He has worked on stages and streets all over the world – the Far East, the Middle East, North America, the Caribbean, Europe and all over the UK. Dan is a regular at Glastonbury as well as a number of other big UK festivals. He wows any audience with supreme yo yo skills, awesome hat manipulation, juggling with finesse, ball spinning, slick diabolo, the tennis can and the one and only ‘Cups and Spoons’. He shouts, he laughs ….. sometimes he even cries. Lots of fun bound together in a daring attempt to rid the world of the mundane!

Old favourites at Arundel Festival, Sussex folksters The Renegade Dogs return with their unique style of family fun and play a selection of big songs on a variety of small instruments!

NICK STEIN

CELEBRATION SAMBA

Celebration Samba is now an established favourite on the Festival scene. The band was formed originally in 2003 by Janice and Ivan Mitchell simply because Worthing needed a samba band! The band was named Celebration Samba “…as it’s about celebrating life – life’s too short 20

Arundel Festival 2016 Event Listings

The next 22 pages show you when and where all the events are happening at this year’s Arundel Festival. The huge variety of events will ensure that the Festival is amusing, entertaining, educational and, above all, enjoyable!

BURLESQUE CABARET NIGHT 19th August

Even before the official Opening Ceremony on Saturday 20th, Jubilee Gardens will kick off with a fabulous Burlesque night starting at 8.30pm. Dawn Gracie, the undisputed Queen of Burlesque, is back! Fresh from her very own Cabaret Club in Chichester and resident Starlet’s Burlesque Show at the Worthing Pier Southern Pavilion, Dawn will present and perform in a show to thrill and entertain. With her will be headline professional performers alongside debut acts.

THE BIG ARUNDEL DANCE Following the huge success of our first flash-mob style opening number last year which saw over 100 people of all ages joining the professionals in a mass ‘Up Town Funk’ adaptation, this year’s Big Arundel Dance is aiming to be even bigger. The dance is being organised by

Kelly Mikulla from Sussex Film Office and produced by Regnante School of Performing Arts in Worthing. Using various soundtracks, we aim to get the whole town dancing throughout Tarrant Street and the High Street as part of the opening ceremony. Everyone is welcome and there will be rehearsals announced in plenty of time for you to learn the moves. For rehearsal details check out www.facebook.com/thebigarundeldance/ or visit www.arundelfestival.co.uk

THE OPENING CEREMONY Saturday 20th August The Big Arundel Dance will finish in Town Square at approximately 2.00pm and Angela Standing, the Town Crier, will then announce the official opening of the 2016 Festival. Georgina, the Duchess of Norfolk, and James Stewart, the Mayor, will raise the flag to mark the start of the celebrations. Enjoy!

VINTAGE BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY This year it’s Vintage Bank Holiday Monday. Timed to coincide with the Queen’s 90th Birthday, everything will be Vintage themed. The stalls, the cars, the music, the food and the dresses – it’s all about Vintage. There will be a Best Dressed Parade and Competition so make sure you come suitably attired! 27

info@echobarrier.com More than 30% of the population are regularly exposed to noise that impacts negatively on their health.

...by using Echo Barriers, you will assist in reducing the effect noise has on individuals!

The Echo Barrier temporary noise reduction barriers are quick and easy to install. They are aimed at sites where it is important to reduce noise levels and maintain good community relations. They are effectively used around construction and demolition sites, as well as around road improvement works and rail maintenance projects.

They are waterproof and can be designed to include the branding of the contracting organisation, helping to make a site more aesthetically pleasing, onto any type of metal fencing product including scaffolding. To enquire about a free trial, information on costs and company news please see our website at www.echobarrier.com.
