Welcome to Arundel Festival | 2017 The Arundel Festival is a celebration of all that makes Arundel such a wonderful, inviting and unique place. It is an annual highlight for the town for good reason.

The Festival continues to flourish, this year presenting a ten-day long programme, and I am delighted to see the Arundel Festival go from strength to strength.

At Arundel Castle, we are pleased to be participating in the Festival once again, hosting two nights of Shakespeare in the Collector Earl’s Garden. This year marks the 950th anniversary of Arundel Castle’s initial construction, and we look forward to welcoming visitors old and new to enjoy its history alongside these enchanting al fresco A Midsummer Night’s Dream performances.

This year’s Festival also sees the return of Dragon Boat Racing on the River Arun, one of 2016’s stand out events. There will also be a static bike race to benefit Help for Heroes and the much-loved Arundel Festival Duck Race. As well as hosting trusted favourites, the Festival reinvents itself in part every year. An example of this innovation is the inaugural town wide Vintage Day on Bank Holiday Monday, taking Arundel back in time, from vintage cars lining the hill to shops, buildings and townsfolk dressed in the fashions of yesteryear. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Festival committee, organisers and volunteers, each of whom go the extra mile to put Arundel on the map as a destination brimming with vibrant culture. I also offer my congratulations, as the Arundel Festival is now officially an award-winning event – testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. All those who are lucky enough to live in Arundel know of its creativity, cultural heritage and community spirit; we look forward to sharing this ethos with visitors from far and wide during what is set to be an outstanding Festival this August.

The Mayor

As Arundel Mayor I welcome everyone to The Arundel Festival which is now in its fourth decade. Over the years there have been constant favourite events such as the Duck Race, the Gallery and Theatre Trails and the 10K Run. Others have changed over time such as the Bath Tub Race morphing last year into the fantastic Dragon Boat Racing Competition which I’m sure will now become a firm favourite. Vintage Bank Holiday Monday will again celebrate all things vintage including a fairground, a fantastic car display, stalls, entertainment and a competition to find the best vintage outfit. The Festival is the perfect opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones; listening to the eclectic musical opportunities at the various venues throughout town; having a look at the amazing pieces of art on the Gallery Trail or simply being entertained by the street artists at the weekends. Arundel Festival is a registered charity which also raises money for other charities during the ten days. Last year over £11,000 was raised for a number of charities. Home-Start Arun and Help for Heroes are among those who will benefit this year. Finally I’d like to thank the committee, our Events Co-ordinator Sadie and all the volunteers who work so hard to make our Festival a really special event. I hope this year’s Festival is as successful as last year’s award winning one. Enjoy yourselves and have fun!

Angela Standing Mayor of Arundel

Throughout this brochure you will see some wonderful photographs of Arundel people, places and past Arundel Festivals. We are extremely fortunate to have two very talented photographers – Charlie Waring and Nigel Cull – who give their time and expertise for free to produce these lovely pictures. Our grateful thanks go to both of them. 7

The picture shows this year’s committee from left: Natalie Montagni (Marketing); Linda Clark (Street Entertainment); Graham Lane (Logistics); Gill Farquharson (Brochure, Media and PR); Michael Tu (Chairman); Jacqueline Curtis (Secretary); Chris Boustead (Treasurer) and James Peters (not pictured). For some of these members this is the third and last year they will be working for the Festival. It is time for new volunteers to get involved and come up with new ideas, so, if you think you can help, please contact Michael Tu at michael@hardwarespares.com There are however a number of other people and organisations who help make our Festival the success it is. They give their time, money or both to support us and we are very grateful. They are listed on the right. A very big thank you to all of them and to everyone in the community who helps with the Festival every year. 8

Last year saw Drip Action’s most popular Theatre Trail, with great reviews for the selection of plays. This year, its 17th, promises another great mix of new drama. Again there will be the chance to see all plays in a day for those who feel fit and adventurous, or to take in a show or two on different days, combining theatre with other Festival attractions, like, to pick randomly from a fantastic programme, the Gallery Trail, street entertainers and music by the river.

Season Tickets are now available from:

We look forward to seeing you along the way.

Festival of the Year 2016 Last year Arundel Festival was nominated for this prestigious award by the readers of Sussex Life. The committee were thrilled to be nominated and even more delighted when the Festival won! Here is the judgement from Leo Hickish who judged the category and is a Partner at Batcheller Monkhouse, Chartered Surveyors.

Arundel Festival is a community event run and managed by a committee of volunteers supported by the Town Council. The town has run a festival now for some 40 years, but over this time it has clearly grown and developed hugely. What is very clever about the way this Festival is run is that the committee are there to spark enthusiasm, co-ordinate marketing and engage the local community rather than necessarily run specific events. They do however deal admirably with the gamut of rules and regulations associated with inviting thousands of people into the town. The result is a very full programme of events throughout the entire festival. It was also evident that the town community was totally behind the event.

Like most small rural towns, the economy of Arundel has been under threat for years. This event has clearly generated business, with some shops and restaurants comparing this 10 day period with the surge more traditional at Christmas. This and the social cohesion the event generates is very special. The festival this year ran over 10 days in August. The festival combines an impressive range of over 240 activities. Their goal is to create a festival that will appeal to all and will help support the economy of the town. Raising funds for local charities is also important. The event is very closely monitored and audited. This allows for careful reflection after each year’s event and the introduction of innovations to keep the event fresh and appealing. This year they introduced more street entertainment, food stalls and dragon racing on the river. They have also developed both a very user-friendly website and high profile on social media. The festival show cases so much about the town - its history and architecture, artistic heritage, commercial heart and its place within the South Downs National Park The event would seem to have achieved this all to a very high level whilst celebrating the town, engaging the local community and providing a very appealing event attracting people from a wide area. Whether visiting for a day or throughout the 10 days this struck me as a very appealing and well considered festival.

Recommendation

The 2016 Committee at the Awards Ceremony

One would be hard put to have created a short list of three more diverse festivals. All three would appear to have understood their market place very well, to have recognised the place they fill within the local community and sought to promote the best that is Sussex. Each could, in the absence of the others, be a worthy winner this year. On careful consideration however it is my recommendation that the winner for 2016 should be the Arundel Festival. 17

Words And Music In Private Houses

MONDAY 21 AUGUST 6 PM MURDER BY GASLIGHT

A brutal murder – a police investigation – a dramatic arrest – an Old Bailey trial. Retired barrister Peter Blood leads us through the highs and lows of one of England’s most famous murder trials, revealing the key players, their back stories and the issues involved. He will take us up to the point when the jury retired to consider its verdict. We shall then break for a glass of wine and discussion. After the break Peter will tell us what actually happened and explain how the case has given rise to some extraordinary theories which are still hotly debated today. Note: the name of the trial will not be disclosed in advance! 57 Maltravers Street £10 to include wine

TUESDAY 22 AUGUST 5 PM A MUSICIANS’ TRAIL

Three groups of 15 participants each will be taken by guides on a magical mystery tour to six secret houses, there to hear music played by a professional musician, each on a different instrument. At the end of the Trail everyone will reunite for wine. Starting at 57 Maltravers Street £20 to include wine – maximum 2 tickets per applicant.

We offer a complete architectural service from inception to completion, including conservation projects, interior design & landscape proposals

WEDNESDAY 23 AUGUST 12 NOON GARDENS AND LANDSCAPE IN THE NOVELS OF JANE AUSTEN

Timothy Mowl, Emeritus Professor in the History of Architecture and Designed Landscape at the University of Bristol, has written widely on historic landscapes and gardens. He is currently working on All around is Fairy Ground – Pleasure and the Regency Garden, a project inspired by the twin anniversaries of the deaths of Jane Austen in 1817 and Humphry Repton in 1818. He will discuss the importance of the created environments in Jane Austen’s novels and set them against contemporary garden fashions. Remembering Emma’s expedition into the countryside, Professor Mowl will, by kind permission of Victoria Holland, deliver his lecture at Peppering High Barn above Burpham. A map will be sent with tickets. £10 to include wine.

THURSDAY 24 AUGUST 6 PM MEMORIALISING REVOLUTION

A century after the events of 1917, we look at how the most fundamental revolutionary upheaval since 1789 could be commemorated. Modernity demanded that a ‘monument with a beard’ was no longer appropriate; instead, the strange and visionary artist Vladimir Tatlin developed a concept (no doubt unrealisable in its time) that became hugely famous and remains of lasting interest. We centre our investigation on his so-called Tower and its multiple resonances. Robin Milner-Gulland is Emeritus Professor and 50th Anniversary Fellow at the University of Sussex. Robin has published in many fields of Russian culture, history and literature, as well as in Sussex archaeology and his book The Russians (Blackwell) was described as ‘opening doors into a fascinating but widely misunderstood world’. 57 Maltravers Street £10 to include wine.

FRIDAY 25 AUGUST 6 PM OUR LITTLE DUKE

Henry XV Duke of Norfolk died one hundred years ago in 1917. Small and famously scruffy Henry was one of the richest men in England, whose philanthropy was matched only by his lack of selfimportance. ‘The only ready-made thing about him’, wrote a biographer, ‘was his coat’. His churchbuilding career began with St. Philip’s in Arundel, now the Cathedral, and his secular buildings, including massive works on the castle, define Arundel as we know it today. His life and in particular his impact on Arundel are celebrated in an illustrated talk by Oliver Hawkins, art historian and for many years Chairman of the Arundel Society. 57 Maltravers Street £10 to include wine.

PLUS A POST FESTIVAL TREAT............. AT 2:30 PM ON FRIDAY 8 SEPTEMBER WE SHALL VISIT BIGNOR PARK IN THE COMPANY OF LORD MERSEY.

Built between 1826 and 1829, Bignor Park and its gardens fall within Professor Mowl’s Regency remit and we shall have the pleasure of visiting the house in the company of Ned, the fifth Viscount Mersey. Since inheriting the estate in 2006, Ned has restored the stables and overseen extensive repairs to the garden walls, haha, house and parkland fencing. He is now restoring the parkland using a plan based on the original 1820s scheme of William Sawrey Gilpin. Following our tour of the house, we are free to explore the gardens, where we may enjoy our own picnics – or, alternatively, drive down the road to Bignor Roman Villa, where there is a cafe. A map will be sent with tickets £12

www.arundelfestival.co.uk

TICKETS Please note that this year it is possible to buy tickets in advance by post. From Monday 10 July please write to: Zimmer Stewart Gallery, 29 Tarrant Street, Arundel, BN18 9DG marking your envelope “Words and Music” and enclosing a stamped addressed envelope. Cheques should be made payable to “Arundel Music” and, if applying for more than one ticket, write “No more than (the full price of all tickets)” across the top of the cheque, leaving the amount space empty. From Tuesday 25 July tickets will be available in person from the Gallery. (Zimmer Stewart Gallery email james@ zimmerstewart.co.uk telephone 01903 882063 between 10 am and 5 pm Tuesday to Saturday).

Street Entertainment 2017 The quality and amount of the Street Entertainment at Arundel Festival is one of the reasons it was voted Festival of the Year 2016 by Sussex Life magazine. During both weekends and on Bank Holiday Monday the streets of the town are alive with jugglers, singers, stilt walkers, magicians, bands, Morris dancers and many other talented artists who entertain the visitors in style. While partly funded by the committee’s fundraising, the Street Entertainment budget benefits enormously from a very generous grant from the Arundel Town Council which enables the Festival Committee to spend a significant sum making the entertainment first class. The committee’s thanks go to them. Finance apart, there is a huge amount of work to be done to select, book and manage all the acts that appear. For the last two years this unenviable task has fallen to committee member Linda Clark and 2017 is no exception. Presenting a bigger and better array every year has been a real challenge but this year Linda has been helped by the additional skills of Karen Knott and Sharon Blaikie. Linda explains: ‘This year I have been truly blessed in having two wonderful ladies working alongside me. Their support, dedication and hard work has resulted in Arundel Festival 2017 Street Entertainment program offering a wide variety of attractions for young and old alike, and adding the ‘wow’ factor to the Festival. A huge thank you to goes to Karen and Sharon.’

Coaching Enterprises and ‘Music for All’ and Performance Creative Coach. She has worked on various community projects locally including Arundel by Candlelight, previous Arundel Festivals and the Sussex Barn Acoustic Series. Sharon also hosted an International Collaborative Community Event with the spectacular ‘Electric Youth’ and world class ‘Boston Show Band’ in Arundel an event which she will repeat this year in Jubilee Gardens and the Arundel Castle cricket club on July 1st.

Sharon and Anna Thompson who have worked together for over 17 years in their band, Sirens Acoustic, are looking forward to performing on Bank Holiday Monday. Their unique sound will be a treat not to be missed. Sharon will again be compering both weekends’ events at this year’s Festival. Live events obviously depend enormously on having really good sound systems in place and the final element of the 2017 Street Entertainment team is SBS Creative who will be providing technicians and this year’s sound system. They are experts in providing bespoke services in Live Event Production and Management and can be contacted on info@sbscreative@gmail.com

Arundel’s Got Talent!

Karen has lived in Arundel for four years and says ‘I’ve always been struck by the sense of community there is here’. She certainly adds to that community as a volunteer for both the Chestnut Tree House Hospice Shop and Arundel Museum. She also writes for The Bell, the town’s magazine, and has somehow found time to complete a BA (Hons.) degree in Literature and Creative Writing at the Open University. Sharon is a highly experienced performer, event specialist, coach and collaborator in the creative arts industry. She has an honours degree from Trinity College of Music, London and has held positions as Head of Music, Choral Director, co-founder of WOW! Creative

For the first time, this year we are going to have our very own Arundel’s Got Talent Competition! Open to young people aged 8-16 who can sing a song or perform an instrumental piece. The winner gets the exciting opportunity to record and mix any song in a professional recording studio. Auditions are being held on Monday 24th July 5 pm- 8pm at the Victoria Institute, Tarrant Street, Arundel, BN18 9DG. An alternative date may be given under exceptional circumstances. The Competition itself will take place during the Acoustics Hour in Jubilee Gardens during the Arundel Festival with the Preliminary Round on Sunday 20th August 11pm -12pm and the Grand Final on Saturday 26th August 2017 2.00pm - 3.30 pm. Sharon Blaikie the organiser says ‘Arundel’s got Talent this year offers an exciting recording studio and CD prize so please get involved! To enter just email Sharon@landonsounds.com giving your name, the act and your contact details. 23

Arundel Festival | 2017

Just some of the acts who will perform this year

the world. He has worked 24 in Covent Garden, the home of street theatre, for many years learning to draw and control a crowd as well as entertain them, turning that crowd into an audience. His years of experience in performing magic, and injecting his brand of quick wit and hysterical sense of humour into his act already set him aside from most other magicians.

Chameleon is a multi-generation dance cooperative from Horsham. The group’s unique style has developed over many years, influenced by a variety of genres from gothic to gypsy, tribal to traditional with a sprinkling of comedy, drama and magic to surprise and delight. Dan the Hat

Once again we will be featuring the traditional Mr Punch and Judy show performed by Benjamin Hasker. All the classic characters will be on display this year which is also Mr Punch’s 355th birthday. Eight Beat Jive Dancing the Lindy Hop, Eight Beat Jive is one of only a few dance groups teaching ‘Savoy’ style Lindy Hop (also known at the Jitterbug) which comes from the Savoy ballroom in Harlem New York. Here’s your chance to see them live. Celebration Samba is returning to the Festival, getting us off to a flying start at the Opening Ceremony. Dan is a comedian and juggler - a truly funny man with a whole host of skills. He has worked on stages and streets all over the world to the Far East, the Middle East, North America, the Caribbean, Europe and all over the UK. Dan is a regular at Glastonbury as well as a whole host of other big UK festivals. He wows any audience with supreme yo yo skills, awesome hat manipulation, juggling with finesse, ball spinning, slick Diabolo, the Tennis can and the one and only ‘Cups and Spoons’. He shouts, cries. Lots of fun bound together in a daring attempt to rid the world of the mundane! Nick Stein, a professional magician, based in the UK although he has been performing magic for the best part of 10 years, wowing spectators all around 24

2017 will mark the band’s 14th year having been founded originally in 2003 by Janice and Ivan Mitchell simply because Worthing needed a samba band! The band was named Celebration Samba “…as it’s about celebrating life – life’s too short not to!” says Janice. The band now boasts more than of 40 members in its “ Bateria “of all ages. From the sudos (players of the large drums) who provide the main beat for many of the pieces, to reps and snares who play some great rolling rhythms, to the high pitched tams, bells and shakers. They all play their part in creating the sweet sound of samba music.

Arundel Festival | 2017 Nick Clark

Nick Clark’s clown persona Tricky Nicky is a sure favourite with young and old. A favourite at the Festival he can juggle, model balloons, do slapstick or just roam the streets making people laugh. A professional magician as well, he has played the Palladium as a supporting act to Paul Daniels as well as making countless appearances throughout Europe in clown shows and circus troupes. Anabel Mather is a remarkably talented, 16 year old musician. She is a first year music student at Northbrook College and has previously performed at Arundel by Candlelight and Arundel Festival – definitely one to watch!

Another happy return to the Festival for the ever-popular InChoir this year after their brilliant performances at the Festival in 2016. In fact all the best acts from previous Festivals will be with us again this year – Ladies that Boogie, Bubble Jo, St Nicholas Barber Shop Quartet, Worthing Steel Band, Renegade Dogs, the inimitable Marvin and many more… It all kicks off at 11.30am on Saturday 19th in Town Square with our very own rock band, the Alternatives – see you there!

Arundel Festival 2017 Event Listings

This year’s Festival has over 200 individual events involving hundreds of people all waiting to entertain, amuse and enthral you. The following 22 pages give you times, venues and details all of which were accurate as the brochure went to press! We hope you enjoy them and have a great time at this year’s Arundel Festival.

OPENING CEREMONY – Saturday 19th August

The traditional opening ceremony this year starts at the Kings Arms Pub in Tarrant Street at 1.45pm. The Celebration Samba Band will open proceedings with a drumming and dance display moving down Tarrant Street and into Town Square. There they will be joined by the Arabesque Dance Troupe who will perform until the official flag raising ceremony at approximately 2.30pm. This will be conducted by the Duchess of Norfolk, who will be accompanied by members of her family, and Angela Standing, the Mayor of Arundel.

VINTAGE BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY Following the successful introduction last year of a themed Bank Holiday Monday, we are again organising everything Vintage this year. Vintage stalls selling all manner of goods; a funfair in Crown Yard for children; a superb display of vintage cars in the High Street; vintage organs; visitors dressed in vintage outfits and a competition to pick the Best Outfit– all form part of what will be a fabulous day. So come suitably dressed and join in the fun!

BURLESQUE CABARET NIGHT Friday 18th August Traditionally the Jubilee Gardens live music festival opens with a saucy, burlesque cabaret on Friday night and this year will be no exception! Returning to the stage is Dawn Gracie, the Queen of Burlesque, with her risqué mix of dance, performance, music and entertainment. A performance teacher and artist, Dawn performs all over the South East at events and theatres producing her special blend of entertainment. At Arundel she is always accompanied by a variety of burlesque acts suitable for adult audiences. Come along and enjoy. The performance starts at 8.30pm.

Help for Heroes

Help for Heroes is a wonderful charity that supports those with injuries and illnesses sustained while serving in the British Armed Forces. No matter when someone served, ex-service personnel are given the support they need to lead active, independent and fulfilling lives.

the ride itself is therapy.’ Andy is now an enthusiastic supporter of the charity and, in September Andy will ride again, this time through the Ardennes to Arnhem, another 300 mile ride over 5 days. So at this year’s Festival, Andy will be mounting a static bike challenge to raise money. The bike will be in a gazebo on Mill Road just outside of the Castle gates opposite the Museum. There volunteers will help to ride the target 60 miles a day. The Bear (pictured here at last year’s Arundel by Candlelight) will make a welcome return to Arundel too and will be there to help and encourage the riders.

Here in Arundel we have our very own Help for Heroes fundraiser, Andy Batty. He explains how he got involved in the first place. ‘I got into it as a result of taking part in their annual flagship Battlefield Bike Ride. Last year about 250 of us, including about 100 servicemen or vets with various mental health or physical disabilities, cycled through the WWI battlefields of Northern France to raise money and awareness for Help for Heroes. For many,

52

If you would like to help Andy raise money for this worthy cause all you have to do is volunteer for a one hour session on the bike by contacting andybatty@hotmail. com or just go to Mill Road and cheer the riders on. Having moved to Arundel in 2016, Andy is hoping that the town will join in and support the fundraising effort, already, some retailers and pubs have agreed to have collection tins during the summer. Last year, at Arundel by Candlelight, a resident of Tarrant Street donated their copper coin jar and Andy hopes to persuade other residents to do the same this year.

Beer can design competition

Arundel Brewery has always been a great supporter of the Arundel Festival. In their shop on Town Quay they sell their delicious Fine Sussex Ales as well as sell high quality water, wine and cider. The Brewery always supplies the bar for the annual Arundel Festival Fundraiser in July and for many years has run a beer mat design competition. This year that changed however – Samantha Walker, a director of the Brewery, explains:

the Arundel Brewery Quayside shop from late July while stocks last! 10p from the sale of each can will be shared equally between the Festival and Gallery Trail funds. Oliver will be exhibiting the original art works in the shop during the Gallery Trail.

‘After a number of years hosting a Beer Mat competition to promote the Festival and Gallery Trail, Arundel Brewery wanted to ring the changes and appeal to an even wider audience, so it had to be a Beer Can Design competition this year!’ All the artists on the Gallery Trail were asked to submit designs and Oliver Hawkins’ colourful and modern design was chosen as the winner. The design will be produced on a limited edition can {shown above) and will be available exclusively from
