Welcome to Arundel Festival 2018 Our award-winning Arundel Festival continues to be both a major regional attraction and an exemplary community event.

2018 is a very special year as we commemorate the Festival’s 40th birthday. In recognition of this special anniversary, you can enjoy a refreshed Festival programme with many acts appearing for the firsttime. It’s also the 30th anniversary of Arundel Gallery Trail, the largest and oldest walking trail in the UK, which continues to exhibit the work of a huge range of artists, both established and new. As well as the visual arts, the Festival offers a cultural showcase of theatre, music, street performance and more. As always, performance venues range from a front room in a tiny cottage to the huge Gothic Roman

Catholic Cathedral, galleries and roads to public parks and gardens, and even the River Arun. Over the two weekends, the town centre roads are closed to traffic so they, too, can become one huge performance space. It’s a time when the streets literally come alive with music, street performers, street food and stalls. Here at the Castle, we are delighted to welcome Illyria Theatre Company for the first time, presenting a remarkable al fresco production of The Merchant of Venice, in the beautiful Collector Earl’s Garden. Sincere thanks go to the Festival Committee and all the many volunteers who help to bring together this amazing ten-day celebration, raising thousands of pounds for charities through events like the Dragon Boat Race. We very much look forward to welcoming you.

Birthday celebrations all around It started with a simple idea in 1978. A staging of the Bard’s work in Arundel Castle’s Tilting Yard to raise money for the Silver Jubilee celebrations. The one-off event sold out – as did the extra 120 tickets that went on sale. The next year it seemed like a jolly good idea to do it all again. Once again, tickets sold out. Which is how it appeared that the Arundel Festival was officially born.

This was also the year that the first ever Arundel Gallery Trail saw houses around town open their doors to art lovers –and anyone of a curious disposition…

And what an entrance it made! The prestigious New Shakespeare Company from Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre staged William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night within the Castle grounds. Renowned Arundel artist Oliver Hawkins designed the Festival logo, which is still used today.

In 1991, a painting of the Castle seen from Maltravers Street by Arundel architect and artist, Neil Holland, graced the festival programme cover. For the next three years, his paintings captured key scenes around town, including a rapturous audience watching a play on the Castle’s lower lawn.

The following year, it was back to the 1920s for a production of The Boyfriend. Ticket prices were the stuff of memories too – each one cost just £1.

To celebrate 20 years of the festival, 1997 was a bumper year. As part of the Arundel Fringe, which merited its own programme, there was a ‘Spot the Idiot’ event. To quote the programme: ‘This is a new feature of the Arundel Festival Fringe where you are looking for the most hilarious, ridiculous, idiotic, eccentric person or persons spotted in Arundel Square during the festival week.’ Would that... could that... happen today?

For those of you who can, cast your mind back to 1984…can you name any players from that year’s celebrity cricket match? Audiences were transported to New York in 1985, when The Trust Players staged Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, inspired by an Ingmar Bergman film. According to that year’s programme, champagne was ‘provided by Moet & Chandon’. Which suggests that it was free…oh, happy days! In 1987, the Wetlands & Wildfowl Trust on Mill Road took a Gallic flight. The Trust Players staged The Prodigious Snob, an adaptation of the French playwright Moliere’s Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Sadly, Moliere himself was no longer around to play M. Jourdain as he had in the 1670s. So, a Mr. Frank Baker took on the role instead. Fast-forward to Monday 28 August 1989, when just £2 bought a ticket to the centennial celebration of Charlie Chaplin’s birth, during which the comedian’s early masterpieces were show-cased at the Priory Playhouse on London Road.

The first Street Theatre day was held in 1998, and was such a success that it was staged again in 1999, when The Times newspaper proclaimed this ‘The best of British festivals’. Writing in the festival programme, Major General The Duke of Norfolk KG GCVO CB CBE MC DL said: ‘The 1999 Arundel Festival brings for your enjoyment the most wide-ranging programme we have ever presented. In this, the year of our golden wedding anniversary, my wife and I wish you a very happy festival.’ Actress and activist Vanessa Redgrave CBE led the cast of Planet Without a Visa, a programme of readings, monologues, songs and music on the subject of fractured society, refugees, exile and the dispossessed. That was Wednesday 1 September 1999, but it would no doubt be just as relevant today.

Maybe because it struggled to contain the Festival’s stellar cast, the 2005 programme was the biggest yet, and since. Bursting from its pages were Romeo and Juliet’s doomed romance played out in the Castle’s Open Air Theatre, the strains of La Traviata from the Baron’s Hall and a firework concert by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Singer songwriter Katie Melua also performed, whose album, ‘Call Off The Search’ was the UK’s biggest selling album of that year. In 2007, Girls Aloud rocked the stage on the Lower Lawns. Sharing the bill were Jamelia, X Factor winner Shayne Ward, Alfie Boe and Level 42. Festival-goers got the chance to fly high in 2011, with balloon flights taking off from the Mill Road meadows and soaring over the rooftops in the town. In 2012, the first ever children’s area was opened opposite Jubilee Gardens. There were music workshops, crafts and face painting – which probably attracted some older visitors too! In 2016, the clever photo on the programme cover perfectly summed up the festival that we know today. An incredible 40 years after it first began, the Arundel Festival is now a fantastic mix of equal parts art, music, street theatre, kid’s fun and sporting events. So happy 40th birthday Arundel Festival and happy 30th birthday Arundel Gallery Trail. May they both continue for many years to come.

Street Entertainment 2018 JANE CLARITY

We are absolutely thrilled that Arundel’s own opera singer, Jane Clarity, will accompany the flag-raising ceremony led by the Duchess of Arundel. The children of St. Philip’s Catholic Primary School will join her. They will be led and conducted by Juliet Robinson, a specialist music teacher who has taught music in both primary and secondary schools for over 30 years. The children will be singing songs in a wide range of styles from African, Scottish, Gaelic to Hip-Hop!

TOT ROCKIN BEATS ‘Putting Families on the dance floor and babysitters out of business!’ Sunday morning will be a party in Market Square as DJ’s, dancers and lots of bubbles and games get tots and toddlers and their parents dancing. Tot Rockin Beats have got tots in Worthing, Brighton and London dancing and now it’s Arundel’s turn.

STEEL STRUM Steel Strum’s Alex turns heads at any venue. After winning an award for Innovation at the UK’s largest Music Competition, Steel Strum were invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall. This led to a performance of Tubular Bells on Classic FM. Mike Oldfield acknowledged their arrangement in glowing terms. Other accolades include winning First Place at ‘Perfect Pitch’, (the World’s first Steel band Collaboration Competition) in 2014.

DAVID STEWART – MAGICIAN A life-long love of occult mysteries has led to a worldwide adventure for the travelling magician David Stewart. Some of his feats include guessing your birthday, seeing your future and even stopping his heartbeat. Watch closely but try not to look him in the eye! THE FRONT ROOM is an intimate mix of music sounds and upbeat spoken-word poets. They will be presenting several sessions throughout the Festival and providing opportunities for others to also participate in open mic sessions.

CIRCO RUM BA BA 1970’s Rock babes, Roxy and Dixie, are slim hipped and glossy lipped and entertain with stories about each rock star they’ve pulled and every tour bus they’ve hung out in. They think every audience member is a potential agent and each group a rock band and are always looking for an entree into their ideal dance group… Pan’s People. Ignore them at your peril!

SUSSEX STEEL BAND Bringing the sunshine of the Caribbean through their music to Arundel, you can’t help but smile when you hear and see the enthusiasm and energy in their performance. Not to be missed!

SOUTH DOWNS FOLK SINGERS Acapella style choir singing traditional Sussex songs, unaccompanied, as they would have been sung in homes and pubs in Arundel in the past.

ARABESQUE Founded back in 1992 and based in Chichester, their aim is always create a happy environment where children feel safe to learn, have fun and make friends. Arabesque has been delivering outstanding training in dance, drama and singing for many years.

WORTHING SILVER BAND Formed in 1975, so just a little older than Arundel Festival, Worthing Silver Band are a 20-strong brass band with acclaimed conductor, Laura King.

LANCING TOWN BAND Who doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t love the sound of a brass band and we couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hold the Festival without an appearance from this fabulous community group.

Thirty Years of the Arundel Gallery Trail Home is where the Art is

The Arundel Gallery Trail started in 1989 to be the visual arts element of Arundel Festival. Ann Sutton, MBE had the original idea and within hours had the support of Oliver Hawkins, Renee Bodimeade and Derek Davis. They achieved their aim to create a circular walking trail within the town centre, on which visitors could see ‘50 temporary galleries in cellars, conservatories, front rooms and back yards of houses, shops and offices’. Artists who took part in the early years will be familiar to Trail goers. Incredibly many of them have been regular exhibitors over the years, and some will exhibit in this special anniversary year. It is the variety within the Trail which visitors enjoy; they are able to see new work by regularly showing artists and follow their development, and at the same time see the work of other artists who may only show for one or two years. The Gallery Trail has helped to establish the reputation of artists and does so much to introduce visual arts to an extended public. Many gallery owners and curators from London and the South East come to the Trail in search of new artists.

1996 saw sculpture on the Causeway roundabout for the first time, and this was a large 12 ft high “Flatman” sculpture by Giles Penny. In recent years the Trail organisers Mark and Rebecca Ford have created several memorable large woven sculptures, some hanging from the Castle walls or floating on the River Arun! To commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the Trail, Arundel based film maker Jane Mote of Beech to Beach, has created a short film which includes interviews with Ann Sutton, Oliver Hawkins and many others involved with Trail. This can be seen on the Gallery Trail website (www.arundelgallerytrail.co.uk) and will be shown during the 2018 Festival. The 2018 Arundel Gallery Trail is set to be another bumper year with a larger than normal guide, many names from years past taking part as well as new ones. It is no wonder that Arundel is now seen as the ‘Home of Art’ in Sussex and the South East or the “St Ives of the South”.

Giles Penny returns this year with a sculpture called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Waving Manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on the Causeway roundabout. This will be placed on a 12ft tall corten steel plinth kindly made for us by Booth Engineering. They are a dynamic, forward-thinking engineering company based in Ford, providing sheet metal, medium and heavier fabrication to clients across the UK and around the world.

Jody East , curator of the Pavilion and expert in the period, will tell us about these remarkable years. Thursday 23 August, 6pm Checkmate to Murder Retired barrister Peter Blood will walk us through the build-up to one of the 20th century’s most fascinating and controversial murder trials. He will then take us through the trial itself up to the point when the jury retired to consider its verdict. We too will retire to deliberate over a glass of wine before reconvening to hear Peter explain what actually happened and why this trial continues to fascinate true crime devotees.

With the Arundel Festival celebrating its 40th anniversary and the castle marking its 950th year, the theme for Story Factory’s imagination-inspiring workshop this August will be – HIP HIP HOORAY! Taking place at the Town Hall, this Bank Holiday Sunday session will focus on celebrations throughout history, and young creatives should prepare to party their way through a day filled with games, story making, art and music. Led by Story Factory’s resident practitioners, occasions from weddings to wakes and birthdays to Bingo wins will be the key ingredients of inventive fun and activity. Beginning life almost four years ago as a one-off workshop to gauge interest in storytelling through different mediums, Story Factory has grown into regular well-attended workshops that allow children to explore their imaginations, giving their creativity a free rein. While guided, workshops are not prescriptive, enabling a broad age range of participants (children 6-13 years) to work happily alongside each other. Past guests include authors, publishers, illustrators, story massage practitioners, and newspaper editors, all of whom have loved being part of such inventiveness and originality. In this year, the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, Arundel is taking part in the “There But Not There” national commemorative project.

93 transparent silhouettes of fallen WW1 soldiers have taken their position on the pews of Arundel Cathedral and nearby St Nicholas Church. Each silhouette is accompanied by a name from Arundel’s Roll of Honour. The charitable project has three simple but significant aims: To Commemorate the Fallen through highlighting the sacrifices made. The 2018 Armistice Project, There But Not There, will be the Centenary Commemoration for the end of the First World War. To Educate all generations, particularly today’s younger generation, born nearly 100 years after the outbreak of WW1, to understand what led to the slaughter of 888,246 British and Commonwealth men. To help Heal those suffering from the hidden wounds of post-traumatic stress disorder and other lasting legacies of combat, by raising funds for our beneficiary charities. Arundel Festival Fundraising The Festival is funded in a number of ways and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all that donate so generously. Fundraising events make an essential contribution, such as our annual fundraising party. This year it was a unanimous decision to bring back the Big Party Marquee, on the stunning Lower Lawns of the Castle. Driving and parking

The A27 is the main arterial route from the east and the west. If you are travelling from the North, link roads include A24, A29 and the A284. Regular buses from Brighton and Chichester are provided by Stagecoach and Compass. Parking is available all day at £5 on the left hand-side as you enter the Causeway in to Arundel. For SatNav, use postcode BN18 9JJ. Huge thanks to Arundel Rotary Club who give up their time to help us with the car parking. Cycle parking available in Lido car park, by museum, Town Quay and High Street.
