SIGN O’ THE TIMES Knitting and Fabric Design CONCEPT
LADY BOMB-DIGGITY Bombdiggity isn’t in any traditional dictionary, but UrbanDictionary.com defines it as the following: [adj] 1) Complete awesomeness to its fullest extent 2) Incredible, beyond anything you could imagine. 3) Awesomeness in its purest form. Example: “That outfit is bombdigity!” GETTING ITCHY FEET FROM THE 2010’s? LETS GO 80’S! (Itchy feet is an urge to get away/move on from one’s current location) CONTEXT: The 80’s Fashion is always finding its way back into the present trends but these trends have much popularity with the younger crowd and celebrities, not the people who have actually lived their lives in that decade. We can only imagine how life must have been then but for the people, who experienced it, mostly find themselves wanting to go back. My initial impression of the 80’s was of shock I believe. I did not understand why someone would dress in those colors and patterns but honestly, it slowly grew onto me. I realized there were a lot of reason why such clothing became popular amongst the people. The music, the movies, the 80’s iconic figures, MTV, all played their roles. What is most attractive is how in the 80’s, dressing was a huge expression of one’s self. Where ideas like power dressing, punk, yuppie, etc, were shaped. All as means of protruding a statement. It is this; the dressing, unique edgy patterns, the colors and the music culture that draws a line between the 80’s from other decades. Even today, some people are so motivated by the 80’s that they find themselves living parallel in the 80’s and the 2010’s with their style and approach to life, which is exactly what has been my driving force. METHOD: Technique: Knitted | Machine: Passap E6000 | Software: DesignKnit8 CRITERIA: An outfit, which would take its bearer, back in those times. Very close to this idea is the band ‘RUBIX KUBE’ which is an 80’s tribute band. An onstage costume for its frontwomen. SILHOUETTE: A fitted short dress with deep arm holes and a tube top. MATERIAL: Cotton/Wool. Metal Hooks. FUNCTION: Party wear/ Stage wear. OUTPUT: A final knitted outfit and the documentation of the process.
