ye Aye Paw’s* heart pounded as fast as the gunfire exploding all around her. “Where’s Mother?” she silently screamed. Aye Aye quietly groped around in the dark looking for her, but discovered she was not with the group. “Protect my mom, Jesus.” The sound of bullets kept coming. Would they ever stop? “Are the Burmese soldiers inside the house?” Aye Aye wondered. With a surge of courage, she left her safe hiding spot and ran up the old wooden stairs of her home. “Mother?” she called out hesitantly when she got inside. Then she heard a small voice coming from a corner. “I’m okay! The bullets didn’t hit me,” her mother said weakly. Aye Aye Paw scooped the fragile, elderly frame into her arms and carried her to safety. “Thank you, Jesus, for saving my mother!” was her simple, grateful prayer.
