Letters from our Leadership

Ioften say that what makes the Anne Springs Close Greenway so special is its ability to be a different experience for everyone. Some folks enjoy just a casual walk or sitting in a rocking chair by the Greenway Gateway. Others log countless miles on our trails, hiking, biking or running. We even have a small but loyal contingent that use our horse trails the way they were intended, on horseback.

As we look to the future, we look forward to welcoming people from all walks of life and engaging in whatever ways recreation looks like for them. As an organization, we want to ensure that the outdoors is accessible to everyone, our green space included.

Weekdays on property can often be surprisingly busy. The nature-based preschool program is bustling with our youngest students, busy learning about the seasons or that interpersonal relationships can be best understood through examples found outdoors. You will often see school buses parked at any of our entrances when elementary and middle school students are visiting to learn more about aquatic ecology. You will also witness a range of ages, whether volunteering in the PAR Garden, helping to count Eastern bluebirds, or taking classes through our Master Naturalist program. Some may even be so lucky as to see our Exceptional Equestrians therapeutic riders gain confidence in themselves and others during a trail ride or after a few weeks in the riding ring.

Regardless of what brings you to the Greenway, together we are developing a community that cares for the outdoors. Young, old, from all walks of life, we can gather in our mutual appreciation and need for nature. In the following pages, you will see what we have accomplished this year with your help. It takes a village, and I am proud that I call this one ours.

We celebrate together another milestone year at our beloved Anne Springs Close Greenway. We enter 2023 with more than 17,000 member households, equating to over 53,000 people in this region that consider the Greenway to be an important part of their lives.

Serving as board chair has been a great privilege and honor. As my tenure winds down, I cannot help but reflect on all that has been accomplished in the last few years thanks to your support.

The past year was filled with successes and firsts for the Greenway, including the groundbreaking at the Crandall Bowles Children’s Farm, which promises to bring more youth to the property than ever before, and fulfills a longheld wish of Ms. Close and her eldest daughter, Crandall, to improve and expand our existing petting zoo, in keeping with Ms. Close’s desire to keep thinking of ways to continuously introduce children to nature.

Visitors flocked to the Greenway by the hundreds of thousands this past year. As stewards of this beautiful property, we have doubled down on our effort to mitigate the environmental impact created by our own growing visitor footprint and added amenities, including construction of the stormwater retention pond near the Greenway Gateway and other mitigation efforts near Steele Creek.

Our staff and volunteers continue to cultivate the federally endangered Schweinitz's sunflower and Piedmont prairie habitat, embracing new resources techniques and best practices to ensure we are providing the best land stewardship possible in the acres restored to prairie.

We look forward to another year of continued growth and enhancement at the Anne Springs Close Greenway, ensuring that our mission to connect people to nature and keep this special place at the heart of our community continues forever, just as Ms. Close intended.

In September at the annual Friends of the Greenway Dinner, staff announced the renaming of the Exceptional Equestrians program after Sylvia Epps Baker, a Fort Mill native, charter member of the Friends of the Greenway, and friend to Anne Springs Close. The organization received an outpouring of memorial gifts in her honor this year, all earmarked to support a program that she and Ms. Close both loved deeply, the Exceptional Equestrians therapeutic riding program. After more than 30 years in existence, this program continues to thrive, serving children and adults from area school districts and municipal programs for weekly sessions offered in the spring and fall.

A yearin Review

Crandall Bowles Children’s Farm

In April, the Greenway celebrated the groundbreaking of the new 18-acre Crandall Bowles Children’s Farm, named in honor of Anne Springs Close’s daughter and former CEO of Springs Industries, Crandall Bowles, who spearheaded the expansion of the farm to make their dream a reality.

The Children’s Farm, located at the Stables entrance, will undoubtedly become a flagship destination for daily visitors and school groups, expanding opportunities for natural learning and introducing farm life to visitors of all ages and backgrounds. The farm will include pastoral habitat and observation areas for ducks and farm birds, rabbits, alpacas, horses, and other barn animals. A new loop trail, as well as an interpretive exhibit hall, gathering lawn, educational garden, open-air learning center and expanded restroom facilities will provide space to facilitate daily interpretation and demonstrations for guests on a range of topics. The Children’s Farm represents a large capital investment and fundraising for the project is ongoing.

Growth of Greenway Fundraising Events

Since the inception of The Green Gala in 2016, the Anne Springs Close Greenway has begun to rely on its fundraising events as a critical part of ongoing annual support. Over the last few years two additional fundraising events, The Taste of Fort Mill and The Boil & Brew, have been added. These events are largely supported by affinity groups, the Greenway Ladies Guild and the Colonel’s Club, and raised more than $246k to support the Greenway’s mission in 2022. Collectively they represent hundreds of volunteer hours donated and more than 2,250 tickets sold. In 2022, a new charity golf tournament was also established to benefit the Anne Springs Close Bridge Program and raised an additional $15,000 in support of efforts to bring more children to nature through field trips and education outreach.

National Philanthropy Day

The legacy of Anne Springs Close was recently honored on National Philanthropy Day (Nov. 10)by the Charlotte Association of Fundraising Professionals with the Outstanding Legacy Award. Greenway leadership and members of the Close family were honored to accept the award in her memory.

Conservation and Land Management

Our region, the southeastern Piedmont, has become one of the fastest-growing populations in the country. Historically, much of the Piedmont was covered by prairies of native grasses and flowers, maintained by regular fire and animals like elk and bison, and supported by large numbers of flowering plants, pollinators, and wildlife like the bobwhite quail. After decades of fire suppression and rapid population growth, most of the Piedmont has been converted to agriculture, housing, or has grown into dense mixed forests.

Over the last several years, Anne Springs Close Greenway resources staff have worked to preserve Piedmont remnants for future generations to experience. This year, preservation efforts continued with the cultivation of nearly 25 acres of grassland and other areas back to native Piedmont prairie,

To celebrate and encourage others to adopt more Piedmont prairie areas in their own landscape, we are selecting a native Plant of the Year that we hope you will consider planting.

one of the rarest plant communities in the Southeast and including the federally endangered Schweinitz's sunflower, embracing new resources techniques and best practices in the areas converted to prairie.

This past year also brought a renewed focus of the Greenway’s own environmental impact as visitor numbers have soared and new amenities like the Greenway Gateway have been added. To employ best practices for stormwater management, a retention pond was installed at the Lake Haigler entrance, helping to collect stormwater properly and mitigate the erosion issues caused by runoff and that negatively impact our watershed. Additional plunge pools will be installed down toward Steele Creek to allow stormwater runoff from the Gateway and surrounding developments to dissipate drainage and decrease water volume and velocity.

Spotted Bee Balm

Monarda punctata

This native perennial, also known as Spotted Bee Balm, blooms in summer and has beautiful lilac-purple blooms. Bee Balm is a perfect choice for your flower garden to attract hummingbirds, butterflies and pollinator bees. Find Bee Balm later in the year, tucked along Prairie Loop and down toward the train trestle at Adventure Road.
