Go to Start Swamp and learn how to become a star reader. Have your textbook ready and look up the right place.

1 Skim Valley: Skim the text “The Stars and Stripes” on page 81 in your textbook. Write down why the numbers 13 and 50 are important for the USA.

2 Scan Hill: Scan “Lego facts” on page 60. How many Lego sets are sold every second? What does the name LEGO mean in English?

0:4 Using verb tenses

Use the verb list on pages 196–198 in your textbook. Say a verb in the infinitive. Your partner has to say the verb in the past tense and then in the present perfect. Then he or she has to make a sentence using the verb.

0:5 Make verb word maps

Choose verbs from the verb list and make word maps.

The school began at 8:30.I bought a new bag yesterday.

0:6 Play an irregular verbs card game

HAND OUT

Each player gets six cards. Put the rest of the cards in a pile on the table (facing down). The goal is to get a set of three cards that belong together and have the same verb.

EXAMPLE: become – became – have/has become.

1 Player 1 picks one of his cards and chooses one of the other players.

2 Player 1 reads the whole sentence on his card aloud.

3 Player 2 looks for the verbs that belong in the verb group on her cards.

4 If player 2 has the verbs that belong in the verb group on her cards, she has to give these cards to player 1. If she doesn’t have any, player 1 has to draw a card from the pile of cards on the table.

5 When a player has a complete set of cards, he puts them on the table. The one with most sets is the winner.
