Message from the Athletics Department Dear ASD students and parents,

I warmly welcome you to another exciting year of Falcon athletics. Each year we look forward to opening the athletics season and will look to build on the success of previous years. This year we have a few changes to introduce to our program, which will ensure a continued focus on student-athlete opportunities, sportsmanship and competition.

QUICK FACTS & CONTACT DETAILS The Athletics Department is responsible for after school sports and competitive interscholastic teams. This includes the Mini Falcons, Middle School, Junior Varsity and Varsity sports programs including golf, dance, swimming, volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, wrestling, cross country, cheer, softball, baseball, badminton, and track & field. The Aquatics Department is responsible for running a competitive swim program for elementary, middle and high school students. This also includes coaching the JV and Varsity swim teams. The Physical Education Department is responsible for teaching required physical education courses, in school intramural competitions, and special events such as Sport Days. The Campus Recreation Department is responsible for recreation based activities, intramurals, and pay per session training programs which include a variety of sport-centered activities. Athletics Director Mark Buschini Tel: 04 395 0005 ext. 1810 mbuschini@asdubai.org Associate Athletics Director Jasmine Brawn Tel: 04 395 0005 ext. 1818 jbrawn@asdubai.org Athletics Administrative Assistant Jill Spinks Tel: 04 395 0005 ext. 1820 jspinks@asdubai.org School Colors Red and white Mascot Falcon 4 | ASD Athletics Handbook 2017/18

First, I would like to introduce Jasmine Brawn to the Athletics Department. Jasmine is coming to us from the International School of Kuala Lumpur as our Associate Director of Athletics. Jasmine will oversee the Middle School Falcons and Junior Falcons programs as well as the JF6 and Mini Falcons programs. Jasmine comes to ASD with an array of athletic directing, coaching and playing experience. Jasmin’s focus will be on the fundamental skill development and character education of our younger ASD athletes, setting a strong foundation for our JV and Varsity teams. The Emirates Athletic Conference (EAC) returns for its second year as the local league competition for our MS, JV and Varsity programs. The league is moving from a four team format to a five team format with the addition of the Universal American School (UAS) as a full member. UAS will join the American Community School Abu Dhabi (ACS), GEMS World Academy (GWA), Dubai American Academy (DAA) and ASD in forming a competitive and well rounded local league providing opportunities for our student-athletes to showcase their talents on a weekly basis. ASD has a strong community surrounding its athletics programs, which is only possible due to the outstanding student-athletes and parents. The success of the program is in part, due to your involvement. Parent involvement, whether it be as a supportive fan at a game, team parent, volunteer at the Falcon’s Nest, or host to a visiting athlete is appreciated and necessary. At ASD volunteerism is essential to the success of the programs and we welcome all families to get involved. Thank you for supporting your sons and daughters as they work towards achieving their dreams. In order for our student-athletes to be successful in the pool, field, and gym success needs to be met in the classroom. Being involved with an ASD sports team is a privilege and carries with it responsibilities. With a focus on time management and good personal organizational skills, excellence in both athletics and academics is achievable. Good luck to all student-athletes on the year ahead and congratulations on becoming a Falcon.

Go Falcons!

Mark Buschini Director of Athletics

“

At the American School of Dubai we believe that a dynamic program of student athletics is vital to the educational development of the student as a whole, while offering opportunities to serve and strengthen the community. More specifically, interscholastic athletic programs offer students the opportunity to experience the educational benefits of athletic competition while adding to our school spirit and developing lifelong values.

We believe that: n COMPASSION, EXCELLENCE, INTEGRITY, RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY are to be emphasized, and are representative of a quality athletics program. n Interscholastic athletics is a component of the total education opportunity offered at ASD. n Participation on a team will provide opportunities for students to demonstrate the student profile. n Winning and losing are secondary over how the game was played and how we represent ourselves, and our school. n The coaching staff selects all members of a team based on the necessary attitude, knowledge, skills and experience to compete at the varsity and junior varsity levels. n Every student should have an opportunity to become involved in the athletic program; if not as an athlete, then in other capacities such as student coaches, student broadcasting, photography, mascot and supporter. n Teams representing ASD should exhibit excellence in skill, discipline, teamwork, as well as pride in themselves and in the program. n Coaches and participants should strive at all levels to develop and display the attitudes of sportsmanship, good citizenship, and loyalty to teams and school. n Both athletics and academics together help achieve our philosophical objectives. n Interscholastic athletics are voluntary and not required, and because those participating represent the entire school community; academic eligibility requirements set by the school as well as adherence to the ASD Athletics Code are requirements for participation. ASD Athletics Handbook 2017/18 | 5

ASD Team Philosophies

“

Character, Sportsmanship, Integrity and Respect are the foundation of our program and must be in place at all levels.

Our philosophy has and always will be to provide the opportunity to students-athletes to participate in as many sports as possible, in order to emphasize community development and school spirit. Our program will have the best possible facilities and equipment, and will be operated in a first class manner. We intend to continue a winning attitude but at the same time keep in mind our primary goals, which are to teach self-control and good sportsmanship. We also keep in mind the values of learning responsibility, daily needs of our athletes and look to carryover values which will remain for a lifetime. By being involved in ASD athletics, students will benefit from an experience that will make him/her a better person for having participated.

JUNIOR VARSITY (JV) PHILOSOPHY Almost all players on the junior varsity team have had prior experience in a chosen sport and have decided to make a commitment to this program for the next few years. The balance between playing time for everyone, the improvement of individual skills and the introduction to more advanced team concepts for the more advanced player is beginning to shift. No longer will the emphasis be on every player getting playing time, but it will change more towards team concept. A key is how well do the player’s individual skills fit into the total team framework. This is not to say that only the starting players will play, but the team concept must be developed and a winning attitude established.

VARSITY PHILOSOPHY This level is the ultimate in interscholastic athletics. By this time, the students-athletes have been exposed to their individual sport for several years and have the background to make the commitment necessary to play at ASD. Winning is very important, but only within the ethical concepts of competition. The most important factor for a student-athlete to be successful at this level is that he/she knows and understands his/her role on the team. 6 | ASD Athletics Handbook 2017/18

The ASD Student-Athlete Being a member of an ASD interscholastic team is a privilege to be earned and maintained throughout the season. Each time participants visit a school, step onto a practice field, or compete in a contest they are expected to represent themselves, their family, their team and the ASD community in a responsible and sportsmanlike manner. Every athlete will have the athletic capability and the academic worthiness to participate in the sport of their choice.

10 | ASD Athletics Handbook 2017/18

TRYOUTS At the beginning of each sport season, a three day tryout process will occur. Each student is required to sign up online one week prior to the start of the tryouts on the Campus Life or Athletics webpage. Student-athletes have a right to know the standards upon which participants are selected for a team. All student-athletes must have an opportunity (at least two days) to demonstrate their skill and abilities before cuts are made in any sport. Upon request the coach will meet each individual and attempt to explain reasons why he/she did not make the team. Parents should expect that every candidate is treated fairly and given every consideration. Coaches are sensitive to feeling of disappointment and will handle the task of forming teams as positively as possible. Coaches are available to answer any questions an athlete may have. While we understand that being cut is disappointing for many athletes are their parents, unfortunately we cannot place everyone. Any athlete cut from a team is welcome to tryout again next season or to try another sport in following seasons. When parents and athletes understand and support the coach’s decision, this difficult process becomes less painful and an opportunity for learning.

TEAM PLACEMENT AT A LEVEL OTHER THAN THE DESIGNATED AGE OR GRADE LEVEL

Student-athletes will begin practice with their own age or grade level. After consultation with coaches, the head coach will recommend any level change to the Athletic Director for approval. If administrative approval is granted, the head coach will discuss the move with the player and parents of the player. If all parties agree that the move is in the overall best interest of the player, team, and program, then the move will be allowed. The physical, emotional, and social well-being of the athlete will be the main criteria for decisions. The above criteria are designed for sports that have two or three levels of competition. Some sports, such as wrestling, tennis and cheer do not by their nature fit the above criteria.

MEET THE COACHES NIGHT

The ASD Athletics Department hosts a Meet the Coaches Night every season. The evening is mandatory for all athletes and their parents to attend each season of sport participation. Detailed information including athlete expectations and policies relating to sport will be presented. During the evening administrative requirements for each sport season will be completed and payments for uniform and travel deposits will be made. Families should come prepared to make these payments of up to AED 1000 per athlete. Athletes will not be permitted to practice, travel, or compete in their sport season until all the expectations and requirements that are presented at Meet the Coaches Night are fulfilled. PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT AND CONTRACT

All students are expected to abide by the rules, regulations, and policies of the American School Dubai, and the MESAC/EAC tournaments. All Junior Varsity and Varsity players and their parents must read and sign a copy of the Players Code Card, which is issued to team members at the beginning of their first season of sport. The Players Code Card is to be returned to the Athletics Department and will be kept on file for the duration of the school year, failure to complete this form will result in students not participating in athletics. Documents must be read, understood and agreed to by both parents and student. This includes the Athlete Code, Participation Consent, Medical Release, Reciprocal Housing, Contact and Medical Information forms. The form which is given by the coach on the first day of practice and must be returned to theAthletics Department within the first week. Violations of the contract may lead to dismissal from a team or the student being sent home from an event, in addition to being referred to the school administration for further possible consequences.

ASD Athletics Handbook 2017/18 | 11

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY POLICIES

Students participating in cocurricular programs are considered to be in positions of leadership; therefore, it is an honor to represent ASD, not a right. Students represent their school and the community. In order to participate in cocurricular activities at ASD, a student can not be earning more than one grade below a C- on the aggregate scale. Eligibility is reviewed three times a year at the following times: 1. First midsemester progress report issued 2. First semester report card 3. Second semester report card (to determine eligibility for 1st season following year)

UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT POLICY

Student-athletes are responsible for any uniforms and equipment issued to them by the Athletic Department. Student-athletes are expected to keep all issued items clean and in good condition. Families are financially responsible for all items issued and will reimburse the Athletic Department for all items not returned within one week after the season. Student-athletes will not be permitted to try out for another sport unless all items issued are returned and/or paid for. In addition, any refusal to adhere to this policy will prohibit eligibility for athletic awards. Studentathletes are to wear only athletic department approved equipment.

ATHLETIC UNIFORM DEPOSIT

An athletic uniform set can cost anywhere from AED 400 to more than AED 1400 to replace. Each player is required to pay a AED 500 Athletics Uniform Deposit. This fee is due upon notice of being selected for the team and is refundable to the student-athlete upon return of the players’ individual uniform in good condition. No athletics uniform will be given out to any student-athlete prior to receiving their deposit. The athletic uniform deposit is to be paid at the Meet the Coaches Night or ASD Business Office. The deposit will be held until the student-athlete has returned his/her uniform in good condition by the designated date for return. If the uniform is not returned by this date, the return of the deposit will be delayed. If the uniform is not returned or damages have occurred, this deposit will be applied towards the cost of replacement of the athletic uniform item. Should the cost of the lost or damaged athletic uniform exceed the deposit, the student-athlete will be informed of the replacement cost of the uniform and balance owing (less the initial deposit) will be charged. Athletes competing in consecutive seasons of sports will not be issued their uniform for the second season until the previous season’s uniform has been returned in its entirety. The athletic uniform deposit will transfer automatically to the next season. There is no need to pay an additional uniform deposit for multiple seasons of sports. Season

Student-athletes should wear appropriate attire on game day so as to represent our school and team properly. (e.g. white dress shirt with red tie or red travel polo, khaki, black or navy dress slacks, closed-toe dress shoes) Each coach will impose the set guidelines for a dress code at their discretion, with administrative approval. Students will travel in game day attire to and from all MESAC events and must be in travel attire to attend the MESAC Awards Banquet.

12 | ASD Athletics Handbook 2017/18

PRACTICE & COMPETITIONS PARTICIPATION Practices, competitions, and attending corresponding team events are mandatory for all student-athletes. To be excused, the student-athlete must notify the coach prior to the practice or competition with a valid reason. Absences should be avoided whenever possible. Anyone missing a practice or an event without permission from his/her coach will be unexcused. Two unexcused absences could be grounds for dismissal from the team. A 100% attendance is expected, however, in order for student-athletes to Letter or receive an award they must attend a minimum of 85% of all scheduled practices and games which would be monitored through attendance taken by the coach and recorded on the Haiku team pages. If a student-athlete does not make the 85% attendance requirement they may NOT be allowed to participate in the travel tournament whether it is a home tournament or away. In addition, the student-athlete is NOT allowed to leave the sporting event until all ASD teams have finished playing. PLAYING TIME

Participating on an athletic team is a privilege, not a right. The coach determines playing time based on the following: respect, attitude, selfdiscipline, coachability, knowledge of the sport, and athletic talent.

DROPPING OUT OF A SPORT

When a student-athlete decides to participate in a sport, and is selected for a team, the Athletics Department and coaches expect the studentathlete to complete the season. If there are extenuating circumstances during the season which necessitate dropping a sport, the studentathlete must consult the coach and explain the circumstances. Depending on the circumstances, the student-athlete may be granted a release by the Athletics Director to participate in the next season. If a student-athlete decides to quit a sport or is dismissed for disciplinary reasons, that individual will be deemed ineligible to participate in the following sports season.

PARTICIPATING ON AN OUTSIDE TEAM

Student-athletes of an ASD team must remember that their first commitment is to their school sponsored team. Practice and competitions with the school team come before any outside team, unless given prior approval. Should the student-athlete violate this policy, it could be grounds for dismissal. ASD Athletics Handbook 2017/18 | 13

LEAGUES & TOURNAMENTS EAC & MESAC ASD participates in a two conferences. The Emirates Athletics Conference (EAC) and a regional conference known as MESAC (Middle East Schools Activities Conference). EAC is a local league consisting of four member schools within the UAE. EAC organizes weekly competitive exchanges amongst the member schools and a one-day championship tournament during the latter part of the season. The Middle East Schools Activities Conference (MESAC) tournaments are three day competitions hosted by member schools on a rotating basis. Members of the EAC: American School of Dubai (ASD) Dubai American Academy (DAA) American Community School - Abu Dhabi (ACS) Gems World Academy (GWA) Universal American School (UAS) Members of MESAC: American School of Dubai (ASD) Dubai American Academy (DAA) American Community School - Abu Dhabi (ACS) American School of Doha (ASDoha) American Embassy School - New Delhi (AES) ABA - An IB World School - Muscat (ABA) Reciprocal Housing Requirement

Housing visitors is an extra responsibility for our busy families but it also provides a wonderful opportunity for international exchange and new friendships. When traveling on overnight trips to other schools, ASD student-athletes are housed by families of the host school. In turn, when teams visit ASD they are housed with the families of ASD athletes. During tournaments,100-200 visiting athletes need to be housed. All athletes are housed in groups of a minimum of two to assist in making both the hosts and the visitors more at ease. The success of MESAC is dependent on this reciprocal housing arrangement between the international member schools. Many of our host families speak fondly of their experiences with students from all over the world. Often our students request to house athletes who had housed them on a previous occasion and remain in contact long after the season is finished. By accepting membership on a sports team and participating in the Athletics program, the student and family also accepts this responsibility

14 | ASD Athletics Handbook 2017/18

for providing housing for our visiting teams. This responsibility extends to match the number of sports and activities respective students participate in throughout the school year. Therefore, an athlete who participates in three seasons of sport may be requested to provide housing to visiting athletes for up to three competitions in a school year. Hosting may extend to an unrelated sport tournament for the host family. The Athletics Department will do everything it can to make housing as practical for host families as possible. MESAC Rules & Guidelines All athletes must abide by MESAC Regulations, which are outlined in player code cards and the Red Travel book: • The use of tobacco, drinking of alcohol, or use of illegal drugs will not be allowed during travel or while in the host city during the period of time covered by the MESAC activity. • Any sightseeing or travel in the host city will be done only with the permission of the host family and the coach/sponsor. • Under no circumstances will housing arrangements be changed without permission of the hosting Tournament Director and the knowledge of the coach/sponsor. • All laws of the host country will be adhered to by student-athletes. • Any unusual circumstances or problems which occur during a stay in the host city will be reported as soon as possible to either the hosting Tournament Director or visiting coach/sponsor. • Visiting students will be in the home of the host family no later than the curfew set by MESAC at 9:30 p.m., or as soon as possible after a schedule activity is completed, whichever is later. The hosting Tournament Director may list an earlier curfew time.

TRAVEL POLICY Travel Policy & Costs • It is the student’s responsibility to inform the coach of his/her intent to travel with the final MESAC team prior to the final roster being announced. • The coach submits the MESAC final roster in order to secure the group airplane booking. • Any student wishing to use Skywards points or individual booking must notify the Athletic Department prior to the final MESAC roster being announced. No students will be allowed to travel on standby tickets (only secured seats will be allowed). Failure to follow this process allows the airline to charge penalty fees and these fees will be charged to the individual student-athlete through a deduction from their travel deposit. International Travel ASD pre-arranges group travel for all traveling teams. This keeps prices lower and affords special abilities to make last minute travel changes when needed. You can predict the season’s estimated cost by scanning the entire season schedule in the JV/Varsity Sports sections to see how many teams travel internationally. Please note that the costs noted are estimated prices for airfare. Tentative dates and prices will be posted on the Athletics website at the beginning of the school year. Location

CODE OF ETHICS FOR PARENTS & FANS

Parents have a vital role in their child’s life and being a positive and supportive sports fan is one of them. Parents want the very best for their son/daughter and being a positive and supportive role model is one of them. Parents should: • Conduct themselves as mature role models, supporting the team in a positive manner. • Respect the decisions made by the game officials and tournament personnel. • Cheer for their team whether they are successful or not and use phrases that are positive and uplifting. • Never boo the visiting team or cheer when the opposition makes a bad play or performs poorly. • Recognize outstanding performances on both sides regardless of the team. The athlete expects parents and fans to: • Support the players, team and coach regardless of the outcome of the game. • Cheer in a positive manner at all times during the game. • Not interfere with the coaching, officiating or practice routine of any team. • Support the athletes with enthusiasm and composure. Sportsmanship demands parents and fans to:

• React in a respective manner to a coaching or officiating decision that may seem questionable. • Treat visiting teams with respect. • Cheer for both teams during the player introduction and at the end of the match.

HOST FAMILIES GUIDELINES AND RESPONSIBILITIES By accepting membership on a sports team and participating in the Athletics program, the family also accepts the responsibility for providing accommodation for teams visiting ASD for competitions and tournaments. This responsibility extends to match the number of sports and activities respective students participate in throughout the school year. Therefore, an athlete who participates in three seasons of sports may be requested to provide housing to visiting athletes for up to three competitions in a school year. Hosting Guidelines

These MESAC Guidelines are intended for the use of parents hosting visitors for tournaments and friendly international matches. 1. Curfews are set by the school for each event, however host parents may ask their guests to observe an earlier curfew, but they may not extend the curfew or modify any other MESAC rules for their guests. 2. During the period of the tournament or competition, hosts will provide ample care and supervision to the visiting athletes. 3. The regulations for student behavior are listed on the player contract. The visiting athletes will have already agreed to observe these rules and regulations. 4. Any violations must be reported immediately to the responsible official as designated by MESAC: Tournament Director, Housing Coordinator, and Athletic Director. 5. Neither host families nor students may negotiate changes to the MESAC regulations for students with respect to curfew, housing arrangements, the use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs or any other rules or provisions set forth by the host school. 6. Host families are to contact their assigned athletes at the time designated by the host school. 7. Host families must arrange for suitable transportation to and from the sporting events, which is normally a private car. Taxis are an appropriate means of transport only if a host member accompanies the guest. Students with a UAE driver’s license are not allowed to drive visiting students. 8. Host families must provide visiting students with suitable meals when applicable: breakfast and dinner 9. Host families should offer a box lunch to the visiting students during the competition unless declined. 10. All athletes will be expected to provide housing during the year regardless of the sport.

The ASD Coach

“

Because of our commitment to excellence, coaches at ASD become one of the most important components of our athletic program. Coaches are responsible for modeling positive behavior and attitude at all times. Coaches are both a participant and teacher at the same time.

Coaches have great responsibility and opportunity to mold young lives. Our coaches are knowledgeable in their sport, prepared, motivating, and able to make adjustments during competition. ASD Coaches: • Act professionally at all times, putting students first. • Keep open lines of communication with their players, parents and the Director of Athletics. • Serve as a liaison between players and their teachers if additional support is needed for academic success. • Know and follow policy set by the American School of Dubai. • Work with the Director of Athletics on issues and concerns.

Coaches can be the most influential aspect of a young person’s life and with that comes a great deal of responsibility.

• Fulfil all paperwork that is required to ensure students participate in MESAC or EAC competitions. • Create and communicate meaningful practice schedules throughout the season to allow for the improvement of athletes. • Ensure players are prepared for all upcoming competitions. • Provide ongoing communication throughout the season to athletes and parents via the team’s Powerschool Learning page. • Keep attendance records of practices and games as required by the Athletics Department.

ASD CONSIDERS THE FOLLOWING WHEN APPRAISING COACHES • Was the season a positive experience for the athlete? • Did the players learn and improve throughout the season? • Did the individuals and team represent the school in an exemplary fashion? Success is measured if the above criteria are met. Wins and championships take care of themselves and will occur if and when everything else falls into place. ASD coaches are respected and not judged on the basis of record. Both winning and losing are contingent upon any number of factors, including available skill, injuries and more.

CODE OF ETHICS FOR COACHES • Treats players as well as opponents with respect. • Inspires the student-athletes to love the game and to compete fairly. • Models good sportsmanship at all times. • Disciplines team members who display unsportsmanlike behavior. • Understands that the athletic arena is an extension of the classroom. • Respects the official’s judgment and interpretation of the rules. • Understands that student-athletes are students first and athletes second.
