Superintendent's Welcome Welcome to the learning community of the American School of Dubai (ASD). The mission of ASD is to challenge and inspire each student to achieve their dreams and to become a passionate learner prepared to adapt and contribute in a rapidly changing world. We understand the power and importance of the learning that occurs for our students beyond their classroom experiences and are delighted to invite you to review the information contained in this handbook. Please read the information regarding the after school activities program at ASD with an eye toward the opportunities that might be of interest to your child. These programs enable students to learn more about their interests and to pursue their passions. Our extracurricular program, which compliments the core academic program, provides additional experiences through which your child will further develop the ASD Core Values of; compassion, excellence, integrity, respect and responsibility. We encourage students and parents alike to get involved in the activities program. Students develop skills that serve them for a lifetime while also extending the range of their experiences as a student at ASD. Parents have the unique opportunity to support the school through engagement in either the parent support groups or parent-led activities highlighted in this handbook. We look forward to working with you throughout the 2013-2014 school year to make this a wonderful year of learning, growth and development for your child. Sincerely, Dr. Brent Mutsch

A Message from PTSA The PTSA is proud to support the After School Program at ASD. We have one of the best After School Programs in the Middle East with several ways to get involved. These include athletics, recreational activities and art enrichment programs as we strive to meet the variety of needs of our community. Being a member of the ASD family means being involved. The After School Program is a great way to utilize your talents as a parent volunteer and also for you and your child to meet other members of our community. Most importantly, it is FUN! By participating in the After School Program, you will also get the chance to interact with many organizations such as PTSA, Booster, CAST, as well as the community service groups on campus. These are all terrific ways to make a difference and to give back to our wonderful school. I look forward to meeting you as the year unfolds. The After School Activities Directors We are happy to present you with our plans for After School Activities this year. The range of activities available to students, faculty and parents is extensive and designed to support the school mission. Research tells us that involvement in sports, arts and recreational activities at school contributes to a child's physical, emotional and social development and the consequent impact on academic success is well known. Whatever the student's interests, skills and aptitudes, there is something for everyone from high level competitive Sports and Athletics, to getting involved in the Arts through musicals, variety shows, plays and dance. There are also many recreational activities for everyone through our recreational and intramural programs. If you are keen to provide more extensive coaching for your child, we host some of the best companies and individuals in Dubai offering high quality programs on campus on a Pay Per Term basis. We also have our parent-led programs including recreational sports run by ASPA, Scouting and our numerous parent and faculty led community service clubs. We encourage you to look through this handbook for the information you and your child need to begin to make good choices for after school activities. Be sure to visit our Expo on September 1st and check the Athletics, Arts and Campus Recreation websites where you will find specific information on the various requirements and procedures for getting involved. We are very proud of our school and what is offered to the students, parents, faculty and staff here at ASD. We are sure you will have a fantastic year. Mark Needs " "

The ASD Athletics Program provides Middle and High School students with the opportunity to participate in interscholastic sports competitions. A wide variety of sports is offered over three seasons: Fall, Winter and Spring. Athletics are offered in three separate age groups: U-14, Junior Varsity and Varsity with both male and female teams represented. ASD is a member of MESAC (Middle East South Asia Conference) and ECC (Emirates Coastal Conference). MESAC consists of schools within the Gulf/South Asia area and include travel opportunities for regional tournaments in both JV and Varsity divisions. Throughout each season ASD competes against eight other schools in the greater Dubai/Abu Dhabi area (ECC) at all three age group levels. All students are invited to try out for a sport at school. This is a great opportunity to develop physically, grow mentally, integrate socially, learn to compete fairly and travel. Get involved and join the great community of American school sports. Our programs are dedicated to developing our in-born creativity as a means of self-expression and communication. We also have opportunities for students to represent ASD through MESAC Arts Festivals, the AMIS Honor Band and Choir Festival and other local festivals. We welcome you with open arms and invite you to get involved in support of the Arts through the Community Arts Support Team (CAST). ASPA Little Falcons Program K1 - Grade 3 Students

The American School Parents “Sports” Activities (ASPA) program offers healthy, parent led, age appropriate after school sports for Elementary students in K1 to Grade 3. These are our “Little Falcons”. The emphasis is on healthy activity, fun, learning new skills and playing games. Competition is not a focus of this program. The cornerstone of the ASPA program is parent involvement. In fact, parents are required to be involved. Campus Recreation will offer basic coaching training and Varsity athlete volunteers will assist. ASPA programs run at a nominal fee to cover some specialized instruction, season ending medals and a Pizza Party.

In the first semester, Intramurals are scheduled to enable students planning to try out for Basketball and Soccer school teams to get some pre-season practice. As always the focus is on fun and fitness. This year there are two Intramural Sports League Seasons in semester 1. We will take a break during the busy second athletics season and end the year with “May Sports Madness”. Students will sign up as a team and play a round robin tournament over 4 weeks. Faculty Teams will also be competing. The Intramural Sports League games will take place twice a week. Teams will be vying for the “Superlative Team” trophy awarded at the end of the year.

Exclusively For Middle School Falcons….. U14 “B” Team Tuesdays Following U14 and JV Team selections in Volleyball, Basketball and Soccer, those students not selected can take advantage of the opportunity to get coaching and game experience led by Varsity athlete coaches. “B” Team Tuesdays is scheduled 3:30-4:30 p.m. every week during the MESAC/ECC season.

Learning to swim and to enjoy the aquatic environment safely is an essential life skill. Swimming is not just great exercise; it is a skill that enhances potential in many aspects of life – physical, social, emotional. Our program contains a scope and sequence from a child blowing his/her first bubbles in the water to potentially swimming competitively for ASD. The After School Swim Program sequence and Semester 1 weekly schedule is outlined below. For more detailed information please visit the Aquatics page on the Campus Recreation Site. For details on the U14, Junior Varsity and Varsity teams please visit the Athletics site.

LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM Beginners/Beginners + (K1 - Grade 1) The goal of this program is to familiarize the beginner with water by instilling confidence, safety and survival skills. We focus on the basic body position for front crawl and backstroke. This is an after school Pay Per Term program. Two – three lessons per week.

Learn to Swim: Stroke Development 1 & 2 (Grade 1 - 5) This phase is an introductory level to competitive swimming and development of the four competitive strokes. In order to begin in the novice levels of our program, swimmers must be able to swim a minimum of 25 meters freestyle/front crawl and backstroke. This is an after school Pay Per Term program. Two – three lessons per week.

COMPETITIVE SWIMMING PROGRAM SEQUENCE Mini Falcons Development Squad (Dolphins grade 2-3 and Sharks grade 4-5) This Squad is for those interested in competing at a casual level and/or in need of further development before qualifying for our Mini Falcons Select Team. Coaches will recommend a swimmer for this program based on results of an assessment in September and January. The focus of this is to continue to build on stroke technique and improve fitness levels. Participation in Time Trials, Invitational galas and duel meets is a feature of this program. The coaches will invite grade 1 students if their skills are strong enough to be part of this group. This is a year round program. There is a fee paid after qualifying for the squad in September. The ASD Swim suit and cap is required. Typical training volume is two to three training sessions per week. Dolphins swim 1200-1500m per session, Sharks swim 1500-2500m per session.

Mini Falcons Select team (Grade 4-6, Grade 3 by invitation of the coach) The main focus of Mini Falcons Select Squad is to compete for the school and to work towards constant improvement over time. Each swimmer should aspire to achieve a time standard qualification (see Time Standards posted on the Aquatics site). Swimmers will be required to swim for the club at all competitions and leagues for which they qualify. These swimmers MUST also act as role models for younger swimmers in the Mini Falcons program and maintain a positive, and enthusiastic attitude towards other swimmers, coaches, training and competition. Swimmers must maintain a strong forward progression as indicated in their timed results in galas and time trials. This is a year round program. There is a fee paid after selection for the squad in September. The ASD Swim suit and cap is required. Typical training volume is three to five training sessions per week, 2500-3000m per session.

Falcons Swim Club (Grade 6-12) The Falcons Swim Club is for swimmers who are not selected to the U14, JV or Varsity teams and for U14, JV and Varsity swimmers who want to continue to swim after the athletics (MESAC/ECC) swim season is over (Mid November). This is a Pay Per Term program. Typical training volume is three to five training sessions per week, 2500-4000m per session.

Arts and Enrichment Programs

Age/Grade Day

The Falcon Swim Club is scheduled around the MESAC swim season. This club provides our advanced swimmers a more rigorous training and instruction in competitive swimming. The club also provides stroke development for G6-12 swimmmers who do not make the school team. Participation in local swim galas is a feature of this club.

This is a competitive swim program for students in grades 2-5 with the necessary proficiency. The program includes participation in competitions. It includes Dolphins (G2-3), Sharks (G4-5) and a select squad (G3-5 + 6)

Open to students in K1—Grade 5 at the elementary pool. Lessons focus on water discovery and awareness, safety around water, buoyancy, mobility and body orientation, propulsion and competitive stroke development.

ASD provides private and small group music instruction on campus. The music teachers are amoung the most sought after professionals in Dubai. We currently offer guitar, brass, woodwind, percussion, piano and voice instruction. Please visit the Campus Rec website for more information. After School Arabic is available for all K1 - Grade 1 Students with Mrs Sarah Aboul Hosn and Miss Nora Makansi. The emphasis of this activity will be on practicing what they learn in class by playing board games, arts and crafts, singing, story telling and other fun activities. There are several yoga classes on campus each week for students and adults. These classes are led by Joanna Macdonald of Keen Fit Center for Holistic Health. Please see the Campus Rec website for the schedule of classes as well as venues.

Mad Science has always been on a mission to spark the imagination and curiosity of children in K1—Grade 5 by providing them with fun, entertaining and educational activities that instill a clear understanding of what science is really about. Mimi offers authentic Mandarin language teaching and Chinese culture introduction. Mandarin, the national language of China, is the most widely spoken language in the world. There are over one billion people who speak Mandarin Chinese as their native or second language and there is increasing demand for Mandarin speakers in the western world.

Drama and musical theatre courses give kids in K1 a great creative outlet to make new friends and have fun. Along the way their confidence gets a boost, their concentration improves and they learn fundamental life skills.

Our very popular ASD Dance program continues this year and offers a wide variety of dance classes. These include: Ballet, Bollywood, Irish, Tap and Jazz Dance. The year concludes with the ASD after school dance showcase in the ASD Theater.

Description

Pay Per Term Program

The table gives you some general information you may need to plan your child's after school schedule. We have also provided the contact email address for each provider for your convenience.

Detailed information is available on the Campus Rec website as well as program fees. Many offer free "taster" sessions prior to paying for the term so you can make good choices for your child.

After School Activities Program Timings The students' safety is our number one priority. Elementary students in particular are not to be on campus unsupervised. There are areas Middle and High School students can go for quiet study while waiting for an after school activity to begin. Each school division will set their policy on this. Parents are asked to review the following timings and make after school pick up plans for your child accordingly. Please check the Campus Rec site regularly for up to date information once the programs start.

Elementary Students (K1 – Grade 5) K1 Students: We are pleased to be able to offer a few activities for K1 students after the end of their school day. Please check the information in this handbook and on the Campus Recreation Site for details on these programs. The child must be met after school by their parent or designated adult and taken to their activity to assist them in getting changed if necessary. A K1 child involved in an activity beginning after 3:15 p.m. will have to be supervised after school by a parent or designated adult and brought to the activity. If you are interested in coordinating an activity for K1 students at 1:45 pm please contact the Campus Recreation Office.

K2-Grade 1 Students: Most activities for these students take place at 3:15 p.m. Please check the Campus Recreation Site for specific program timings. A parent or designated adult is required take their child to their activity and if necessary assist their child in changing clothes for their activity.

Grade 2-5 Students: In most cases children in grade 2 – 5 can make their own way to their activity and get themselves changed and ready where necessary. At the beginning of the season parents are asked to assist in familiarizing their child with the location of their activity if necessary. Please contact Campus Recreation if you require assistance with this.

K1 – Grade 5 Pay Per Term Programs Pay Per Term programs are scheduled at varying times after school and on Saturdays. During the school week some Pay Per term programs take place after 4:00 p.m. If a student is not in a supervised location on campus or an organized after school activities at 3:15 p.m., they must be supervised by a parent or designated adult OR picked up at 3:00 p.m. (1:45 p.m. for K1) and brought back to school for their activity.

Middle School and High School Students (Grade 6—12) After School activities for Middle and High School students will take place as follows:

Intramural League Games and ASRP Activities (1 - 2 Times per week) " Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday" " Tuesday " " " " " " " "

Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts Boy Scouts: Grade 5—12 Boys Girl Scouts: K2—Grade 6 Girls Cub Scouts: Grade 1—5 Boys

Boy Scouts of America Troop 813 The Boy Scouts of America is one of America's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness. For nearly a century, the BSA has helped build future leaders by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes — and, through nearly a century of experience, knows — that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society. Contact Jeff Hoyt at hoytjk2@aol.com to find out more.

Cub Scouts Pack 813 The Cub Scouts program is open to boys in Grades 1—5. Cub Scouts means doing. Everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have boys doing things. Activities are used to achieve aims of scouting—citizenship training, character development and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in the den and in the pack during weekly den meetings and monthly pack meetings. Apart from the fun and excitement the Cub Scout activities bring, the cub scout promise, the Law of the Pack, the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, and salute all teach good citizenship and contribute to a boy's sense of belonging. Contact Valerie or Garry Presdee on valerie@presdee.com or garry@presdee.com if you would like to join.

Girl Scouts USA Girl Scouts Overseas serves American girls living overseas and girls attending American or international schools. USAGSO members enjoy the same excitement, fun and adventures in Girl Scouting as their state- side Girl Scout sisters. Girls relocating to another country will find that USAGSO provides them with the security of knowing that they will have an instant group of friends when they reach their new home. Girl Scouts is the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self- worth. Contact: Tindley Gilbert on girlscoutsasd@gmail.com to join this group.

Community Service at ASD Service Learning is integral to our school mission and core values. Faculty and parent volunteers work hard to provide opportunities for students to engage in meaningful service. ASD has several clubs and organizations operating with parents, faculty and students involved as part of the curriculum or as an after school activity. Besides a host of curricular service projects students are involved in, the following After School Service clubs provide opportunities for students and adults to come together in support of some very worthwhile causes. These clubs meet regularly after school and work on several events and fundraising projects throughout the year. Kids For Wish Kids Club - Middle School The KFWK Club offers Middle School students the opportunity to fulfill the wishes of children living in the UAE with lifethreatening medical conditions. This community service club is part of the Make A Wish Foundation of the UAE. It provides a positive, caring, and fun experience in which members can help make a difference in a child's life. Students who wish to join this club will be participating in a number of school wide events to raise funds for this great cause throughout the year. The club sponsor is Tia McSherry, ASD LSS teacher along with Jane Elliott, ASD parent volunteer. To sign up, email kidsforwishkids@asdubai.org Seeds Of Change - Middle School and High School The Seeds of Change runs an organic garden as an after-school club for Middle and High School students. It is led by student officers, parents and two faculty coordinators. SOC focus on three components - growing organic food, consuming it, and making compost. We encourage ASD families to "taste the difference" at our weekly Tuesday Farmers Market. We also use food waste from the Cafeteria / Subway / from home to make compost, which in turn is used as an organic fertilizer for the garden. Club members also have the opportunity to help with fund raising and publicity through blogging and maintaining a webpage. The faculty leaders are Mr. Juan Fuentes and Mr. Sean Whitney. The parent leaders are Maya Abou Jaoude and Namita Khanna. To find out more about this program, email them at seedsofchange@asdubai.org . Club GAIA (Global Awareness, Inner Awakening) Club GAIA focuses on some exciting projects around the theme of "Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling" in partnership with faculty in the ES, MS and HS. The email contacts for each division are: gaia.es@asdubai.org, gaia.ms@asdubai.org and gaia.hs@asdubai.org . SEENAH (Sustainable Economics, Education, Nutrition and Health) - Middle School and High School Our Mission: SEENAH supports communities by connecting reputable NGOs with organizations and individuals who want to make a difference. SEENAH is a platform where High School students have the opportunity to lead and contribute to a variety of community service efforts. Students are encouraged to identify and promote projects to help the underprivileged while collaborating with peers, administration, faculty and parents. It is a place where students can brainstorm, develop and lead initiatives that can make a difference. MS and ES students often pitch in and help on various fundraising projects such as the SEENAH Jumble Sale and DUCE. Student officers for 2013-2014 are Sarah Syed (President), Brittany Wiltshire (Vice President), Sophia Syed (Secretary), Sami Malas (Publicity), Aheem Siddique and Deena Habib (Treasurer) and Sanjana Kumar (Photojournalist and Newsletter). For more information please go to www.seenah.org, or email seenah@asdubai.org . Room To Read - Elementary School and Middle School? R2R partners with local communities throughout the developing world to establish schools, libraries and other educational infrastructure. R2R seeks to intervene early in the lives of children in the belief that education is a lifelong gift that empowers people to ultimately improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries and future generations. Through the opportunities that only an education can provide, R2R strives to break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time. The adult leader is Mimi Yang and to sign up, you may email: roomtoread@asdubai.org . DUBAI ULTIMATE CHARITY EVENT Mark your calendars for January 31st 2014 when we will have our 8th annual Dubai Ultimate Charity Event. The main event at DUCE is our Ultimate Frisbee Tournament and there will be additional events and activities for the whole family in support of our ASD sponsored service learning programs.

Get Involved In The ARTS!

“An arts education helps build academic skills and increase academic performance, while also providing alternative opportunities for students.” The reality for all of us at ASD is that quality education must include the Arts. Participation in the Arts allows us to discover and nurture the strengths of our students and they also open the doors to self-discovery. The Arts can create student success and meaning to not only themselves, but also to others throughout their lives. At ASD, the parents play a major role in community participation and advocacy for the Arts. Everyone in our community benefits when the school succeeds and we can't succeed without Art education. We promise our students and our parents that the Arts have a well loved and revered place in the curriculum as well as after the regular school day finishes. The Arts Directors

There are three ways to stay in the KNOW. 1. The ARTS website (https://sites.google.com/a/asdubai.org/the-arts/) maintained by Mrs. Barb Wallin. This site will keep you informed of when auditions, rehearsals, and shows are. 2. The school daily bulletin at each level will keep students informed of when auditions, rehearsals, and shows are. 3. Finally, the Arts leaders at each school level will have the answers to any of your questions that you believe are not covered in the bulletins. Please contact any of them by email: " " Elementary - "Kristen Roemer" kroemer@asdubai.org " " Middle School - "Emily DeRosier" ederosier@asdubai.org " " High School - "Phil Ridley" pridley@asdubai.org " " After School Activities - "Mark Needs" mneeds@asdubai.org

Kristen Roemer Elementary Art Leader

(Believe it or not, we even have an adult theatre class and an adult painting class for moms and dads.) Yes, a lot of the activities take place during the school day after school, but our evenings and our weekends are also filled with performing and visual art opportunities. What are you waiting for? Get in the know - we are waiting for you!

Audience ETIQUETTE 1. Please do not bring in any food or any liquid drinks into the theater. 2. Refrain from talking during the presentations and performances, however we encourage laughing and clapping. 3. 2. ASD ATHLETIC PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY 2.1 UNDER 14 (U-14) The philosophy at the U-14 level is to provide the student-athlete with fundamental skills to develop them for the next level of participation. It is our intent to provide playing time for all qualified team members. Within reason, playing time is more important than winning and losing. We encourage all U-14 student-athletes to also participate in our intramural programs. 2.2 JUNIOR VARSITY (JV) Almost all players on the Junior Varsity team have had prior experience in that sport and have decided to make a commitment to that program for the next couple of years. The balance between playing time for everyone, the improvement of individual skills and the introduction to more advanced team concepts for the more advanced player is beginning to shift. No longer will the emphasis be on every player getting playing time, but it will change more towards team concept. A key is how well do the player's individual skills fit into the total team framework. This is not to say that only the starting players will play, but the team concept must be developed and a winning attitude established. 2.3 VARSITY This level is the ultimate in Interscholastic Athletics. By this time, the student-athletes have been exposed to their individual sport for several years and have the background to make the commitment necessary to play at ASD. Winning is very important, but only within the ethical concepts of competition. The most important factor for a student-athlete to be successful at this level is that he/she knows and understands his/her role on the team. Character, Sportsmanship, Integrity, and Respect are the foundation of our program and must be in place at all levels. 2.4 JOINING AN ASD ATHLETIC TEAM All students will receive an informational bulletin and announcements leading up to their season. The bulletin and announcement has a link attached to sign up online one week prior to the start of the season. Students should report for try-outs on the predetermined date. Student-athletes have a right to know the standards upon which participants are selected for a team. All student-athletes will have an opportunity (at least two days) to demonstrate their skill and abilities before team selection takes place. Parents should expect that every candidate is treated fairly and given every consideration. Coaches are sensitive to students' feelings of disappointment at not being selected for a team. Upon request the coach will meet with each individual and attempt to explain reasons why he/she did not make the team. While we understand that not being selected is disappointing for many athletes and their parents, team roster sizes are limited. Athletes not selected are welcome to try out again next season or to try another sport. There are also extensive opportunities in after school sports through the Campus Recreation Intramural and Clubs program. Students who are selected must understand that they are committing to the team and that they are a valuable member of the team. The team cannot move forward and progress without a full team in attendance. Please refer to the Athletics attendance policy in the Athletics handbook.
