Message from the Campus Recreation Coordinator Dear ASD community, The opportunity to serve our school and continue the tradition of academic and co-curricular excellence is an honor. The 2019-2020 school year will be an exciting year of activities. In 2018-2019, ASD’s Campus Recreation programs offered 3,000 opportunities for healthy active living. I’m very proud to serve a community that is active and committed to promoting balance beyond the school day with safe, fun, and inclusive activities. In our commitment to supporting the school’s mission statement, to challenge and inspire each student to achieve their dreams, Campus Recreation partners with Athletics, the Arts, Aquatics, and Service Learning to provide comprehensive programs that meet the varied interests of our students and adult community.
This handbook provides information to help you understand the various options available in Campus Recreation, and general overview of the Campus Life Activities program. In addition to our guide, more information is available online via the Campus Life GO Pages. We are here to serve others by contributing to our community in a positive way as respectful global citizens. Finding balance between work and play is both a commitment and a challenge for our 2019-2020 school year. We are confident community members will find diverse learning opportunities that promote balance beyond the school day academically, socially, and emotionally. Looking forward to great year!

Campus Life 2019-2020 Campus Recreation Guide
What is Campus Life? Campus Life is made up of five ASD departments that provide extracurricular activities for the community.
CAMPUS RECREATION Campus Recreation supports the school mission by providing a wide variety of positive, healthy activities for students, parents, faculty and staff in order to foster and encourage within each participant the desire to pursue a healthy lifestyle. Campus Recreation activities include After School Recreation Programs (ASRPs) and Intramural Sports Leagues led by ASD faculty and staff. The Campus Recreation department also organizes activities for the ASD parent community such as basketball, soccer, fitness classes, yoga, and zumba. Parents have access to the indoor and outdoor running tracks, fitness center, and tennis courts. In addition, Campus Recreation facilitates activities offered by external providers on a pay per season basis. These providers are among the best in Dubai and ooffer students professional instruction in a variety of disciplines conveniently hosted campus.
ATHLETICS The ASD Athletics Program provides upper elementary, middle, and high school students an opportunity to participate in interscholastic sports competitions. The Athletics Department supports over 1,000 athletic opportunities in 14 different sports within 53 different teams. Athletics are offered in five age groups: Mini Falcons (Grades 4-5), MS Junior Falcons and MS Falcons (Grade 6-8), and Junior Varsity and Varsity. ASD is a member of the Emirates Athletics Conference (EAC), Junior Emirates Athletics Conference (JEAC), and Middle East South Asia Conference (MESAC).
AQUATICS Learning to swim and to enjoy the aquatic environment safely is an essential life skill. Swimming is not just great exercise; it is a skill that enhances many aspects of life. The Aquatics program contains a scope and sequence from a child blowing his/her first bubbles in the water to potentially swimming competitively as part of ASD’s Athletics program. The after school swim program sequence, schedules and pricing (where applicable) is available online on the Aquatics GO Page. Our Red Cross Learn to Swim program is run in cooperation with Campus Recreation. The competitive Middle School, Junior Varsity and Varsity school swim teams are coordinated through the Athletics Department.

THE ARTS The Arts are an important part of Campus Life. Everyone in the ASD community is encouraged to develop their aesthetic, theatrical, and musical potential to the fullest. The Arts program is dedicated to developing our inborn creativity as a means of self-expression and communication. Students have a number of opportunities to represent ASD through MESAC Arts Festivals, the AMIS Honor Band and Choir Festivals, and other local festivals.
SERVICE LEARNING AT ASD Student organizations at the American School of Dubai exist as a co-curricular forum for students to express or explore interests, to build student leadership, and to enrich campus life. Students have opportunities in three categories: school leadership, academics, and service. Service organizations are coordinated and developed by the Service Learning Coordinator. Students may learn about service organizations through their division, with opportunities available both during the school day and after.

The ASRP Program The After School Recreation Program (ASRP) provides faculty and staff led activities for elementary, middle, and high school students. ASRPs are offered each of the three seasons and take place once or twice a week for one hour. Faculty and staff led activities enable our teachers to share some interests and passions they have with students. Most activities provide students the opportunity to apply some of the things they are learning in the classroom to explore further and have fun. The types of activities vary from sports to leisure, arts, technology, and general interest. ASRPs are free of charge. To sign up for ASRP activities, Campus Recreation publishes and promotes the list of activities before the beginning of each season. Parents can visit the Campus Life GO Page or the Campus Recreation GO Page to view what is offered. This is followed by an online signup via SchoolsBuddy.
Elementary School Elementary ASRPs are created and scheduled to accommodate the following grade levels: K1, K2-G1, G2-3 and G4-5. Students at each grade level have a variety of activities to choose from throughout the week and within each seasons. Rollerblading, basketball, soccer, minecraft club, iMovie animation, climbing, Arabic playgroups, and ping pong are some of our popular activities. There are many more exciting faculty and staff led activities scheduled throughout the year.
Middle School MS Students have the opportunity to get involved in Campus Recreation ASRP activities including Tuesday Intramural Sports Leagues, climbing club, Food Revolution cooking club, chess club, and more. Middle School students sign themselves up online.

Community Programs 2019-2020 Campus Recreation Guide
Community Programs SCOUTING AT ASD Campus Recreation supports a wide variety of opportunities for the ASD community to learn, develop new interests and participate in community activities. ASD hosts Troops 813 and 528 of the Boys Scouts of America (BSA) as well as the USA Girl Scouts Overseas (USAGSO) troop. Campus Recreation facilitates holiday camps exclusively for ASD students and organizes charitable events. Campus Recreation also manages activities for ASD Adults including evening sports activities and use of the ASD facilities for personal fitness. Girl Scouts: K2-Grade 12 girls Cub Scouts: Grades 1-5 boys Boy Scouts: Grades 5-12 boys The Scouting programs are run by parent volunteers. More information is available on the Campus Recreation GO Page.
USA Girl Scouts Overseas (USAGSO) USA Girl Scouts Overseas (USAGSO) serves American girls living overseas and attending American or international schools. Girl Scouts is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, they build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. USAGSO members enjoy the same excitement, fun, and adventures in Girl Scouting as their stateside Girl Scout sisters.
Cub Scouts Pack 813 The Cub Scouts program is open to boys in Grades 1-5. Cub Scouts means doing. Everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have boys doing things. Activities are used to achieve aims of scouting – citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen during weekly den meetings and monthly pack meetings. Apart from the fun and excitement the Cub Scout activities bring, the Cub Scout promise, the Law of the Pack, the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, and salute all teach good citizenship and contribute to a boy’s sense of belonging.
Boy Scouts of America Troop 813 The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is one of America’s largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness. For nearly a century, the BSA has helped build future leaders by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. The Boy Scouts of America believes – and, through nearly a century of experience, knows – that helping youth is a key to building a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society.
