High School Counseling
High School Counselors
The American School of Dubai High School Counseling program targets the needs of students’ academic, personal/social, and college/career pathway growth. The high school counselors are professionals who serve as student advocates and collaborate with families, educators and community and international resources to ensure optimal support for all students. Working in conjunction with these stakeholders, ASD school counselors facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and skill sets necessary for students to become productive and contributing members of society. The high school counselors help to ensure that the doors of opportunity are open for every student upon graduating from ASD.
Personal-Social & Transitions
How do I contact my counselor? Students should feel free to reach out to their counselor directly via email, or contact one of the counseling support staff for an appointment.
PERSONAL-SOCIAL
When are counselors available?
Counselors support students and work with families on personal, social and emotional issues relevant to the youth of today. Prevention and intervention services include: conflict resolution, stress management, crisis response, creating positive relationships, developing healthy coping skills, managing peer pressure and more.
Counselors are available to meet with students and families before school, after school, during lunch, and during student study blocks. To maximize learning, counselors typically do not meet with students during class time. Appointments are recommended and may be made by contacting the counseling support staff.
TRANSITION SUPPORT Transitions during high school can be both exciting and challenging. Counselors work with students and parents to assist during transition and adjustment periods. In addition to individual meetings, our New Student Orientation, Senior Transition Program and Parent-to-Parent Panel are provided throughout the year to best support students and parents.
College & Career CAREER EXPLORATION Counselors work with students to help analyze and evaluate abilities, interests, skills and aptitudes to develop goals and plans for life after ASD. Counselors further support student career exploration using career interest inventories and assessments, and through activities such as our annual Career Day and Job Shadow Day. COLLEGE PLANNING Post-secondary planning and preparation begins in grade 9 with 4-year academic planning, self-exploration and career interest units. Counselors begin personal one-on-one college meetings with students and parents in grade 11, and continue to meet and advise through the grade 12 college application process

ACADMIC SUPPORT Counselors support students’ academic success. While support will look different depending on the student need, typically counselor support may include: monitoring academic and graduation progress, working with teachers and Learning Support Services at ASD, helping to develop intervention strategies to improve performance and advocating for students. In addition, counselors can assist students in designing schedules and 4-year plans to meet individual academic and postsecondary goals.
