Message from the Athletics Department Welcome to the Middle School Athletics for the 2021-2022 year at American School of Dubai. We are looking forward to the year ahead. We believe that sport provides an amazing opportunity for students to learn to understand and better develop themselves as leaders and in their role as part of a community. While the landscape of the ASD athletic program may look unfamiliar, the goal is certainly the same: we continue to be committed to providing student-athletes with a variety of opportunities to engage in athletic activities. ASD core values drive all our athletic programs. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the world, ASD has been working tirelessly to provide students with a safe environment to learn and engage on campus, and this effort extends to the athletic program. While the directives set forth by KHDA provide their own challenges, we are prepared to adapt and create a path forward to safely and legally return to participation, offering the sports and activities our students are accustomed to. We provide scaffolded levels of opportunity for athletes at each stage of their development. All middle school students from Grades 6-8 are eligible for middle school athletic programs. These programs consist of Middle School Falcons, Middle School Junior Falcons and JF6 teams in each activity. The Middle School Falcons is a select program participating in the Emirates Athletic Conference (EAC). The Middle School Junior Falcons is a select program providing athletic opportunities to a wider range of student athletes. They compete in the Dubai International Schools Sports Conference (DISSC). The JF6 program is inclusive of all developmental players in Grade 6. They play in the Junior Emirates Athletic Conference (JEAC). Members of each conference have been in constant communication throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to coordinate and discuss various scenarios and return strategies that will be implemented as soon as it is safe to do so. The health and safety of our students, coaches and community is of the utmost importance and as such each member schools are committed to developing common agreements regarding hygiene expectations and other control measures for future event-hosting and travel. The American School of Dubai sets high standards of performance for our student-athletes in sport and in life. The Athletics Department looks forward to a successful year and would like to encourage student-athletes to continue to work towards their own definition of athletic and academic excellence. GO FALCONS!

TRYOUT PROCEDURE • • • • •
The online tryout registrations will open on SchoolsBuddy one week prior to the start of the season. Athletes report for tryouts on the predetermined dates. After two days of skill assessment, coaches begin to form squads. Emails go out to inform athletes whether they have made the team or not. Athletes report for practices beginning the week after tryouts and the season begins.
TRYOUT NOTES • Athletes trying out for a sport have the claim to know the assessment standards in which they were evaluated. • Upon request the coach is available to meet with an individual. They will be given the time to ask the necessary clarifying questions to understand why they may not have made a particular team. They will be given the reasons based on the assessment criteria standards. • Parents should expect that every candidate is treated fairly and given every consideration at a tryout. • Coaches are sensitive to feelings of disappointment and will handle the task of forming squads as positively as possible. • Coaches are available to answer any questions an athlete may have at any time during the tryout period. • Being cut is disappointing for many athletes and their parents. Unfortunately we are unable to place everyone on a team at ASD. Any athlete cut from a team is welcome to tryout again the following season. • When parents and athletes understand and support a coach’s decision, the challenge is simply overcome. All challenge is an opportunity for growth.
JV/VARSITY TEAM PLACEMENT BEYOND DESIGNATED AGE OR GRADE LEVEL Student-athletes will begin try-outs with their own age or grade level. A head coach may recommend level changes to the Athletics Director upon consultation with other coaches. If administrative approval is granted, the head coach will discuss the move with the player and parents of the player. If all parties agree that the move is in the overall best interest of the player, team, and program, then the shift will occur.

COMMUNICATION The ASD Athletics Office supports over 1,150 athletic opportunities in 14 different sports within 53 different teams over 3 seasons of sports. We strive to provide accurate and up-todate information accessible through a central system of Google calendars and PowerSchool Learning in addition to offering information sessions to both athletes and parents at the beginning of each athletic season. Calendars and Schedules ASD has a variety of calendars available through the Connect ASD Page of their website. The Competitions Calendar is one of the school’s five main calendars and showcases the dates, times, locations, and specific details regarding all games and tournaments of every athletic team. Every sport has its own practice calendar and these calendars can be online located on the SchoolsBuddy page. These calendars are the best resource for accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive information regarding all games, tournaments, and practices. Email The Athletics Office provides minimal email communication to athletes and families throughout the season. However, there will be one email sent to the ASD family account of athletes selected for a team at the beginning of the season. This email will contain links for the Athletics Website and the Athletics Code Card. One additional email will be sent to both the athlete and the family upon selection of MESAC with details regarding payment, travel, and packing list.

PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT AND CONTRACT All students are expected to abide by the rules, regulations, and policies of the American School of Dubai, Emirates Athletics Conference, Dubai International Schools Sports Conference and Junior Emirates Athletics Conference. All Middle School players and their parents must read and sign a copy of the Athletics Code Card, which is issued to families at the beginning of each season. The Code Card includes the Athletics Code, participation consent, medical release contract, and parent and Athlete codes of conduct.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY POLICIES Being a member of an ASD interscholastic team is a privilege. Our student-athletes are ambassadors for our community and as such are expected to demonstrate the highest degree of etiquette in school and in all aspects relating to competition. Student-athletes are expected to remain in good academic standing. These expectations are reflected in our Core Values at ASD. Falling below standard in any of these areas are grounds for suspension or dismissal from an athletic team at ASD. In addition, students must demonstrate punctuality and regular attendance at school. Any student deemed to have excessive tardiness or absences from school or individual classes may be ineligible to participate in athletics activities. In every case, a student must be in school on the day of an after school event, and in school the day before an away trip in order to participate.
11
UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT POLICY Student-athletes are responsible for any uniforms and equipment issued to them by the Athletic Department. Student-athletes are expected to keep all issued items clean and in good condition. Families are financially responsible for all items issued and will reimburse the Athletic Department for all items returned past final due date. Athletes will not be permitted to receive the next season’s uniform unless all items issued are returned and/or paid for. Any refusal to adhere to this policy will prohibit eligibility for athletic awards. Student-athletes are to wear only athletic department approved equipment.
ATHLETIC UNIFORMS An athletic uniform set can cost anywhere from AED 400 to more than AED 1,400 to replace. Uniforms are to be returned to the Athletics Office promptly at the end of the sport season. If the uniform is not returned, lost, or damages have occurred the cost of replacement of the athletic uniform item will be charged to the family.
PRACTICE & COMPETITIONS PARTICIPATION Attendance at practices, competitions, and corresponding team events are mandatory for all student-athletes. Absences should be communicated with a coach and avoided whenever possible. Communication is paramount. Two absences without communication may be considered grounds for dismissal from the team. Student-athletes are expected to attend 100% of practices and competitions. 85% attendance is a minimum standard of acceptable absence at ASD. If a studentathlete’s attendance falls below an 85% attendance record they may be ineligible to participate in games and tournaments.
PLAYING TIME Participating on an athletic team is a privilege, not a right. The coach determines playing time based on the following: respect, attitude, self-discipline, coachability, knowledge of the sport, and athletic talent.
DRESS CODE ON GAME OR TRAVEL DAY Student-athletes should wear appropriate attire on game day so as to represent our school and team properly. Each coach will impose the set guidelines for a dress code at their discretion, with administrative approval.

Depending on the circumstances, the student-athlete may be granted a release by the Athletic Director to participate in the next season. The ASD Parent At ASD parents are vital in making the Athletic Department the best it can be. Parents are called upon to volunteer to support coaches and teams throughout the year. EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS: PARENT SPORTSMANSHIP CODE ASD believes parents are an important part of all programs and students learn and develop best when the adults in their lives model the values we teach and hold dear. We are therefore asking all parents support their athlete in athletics by: 1. Serving as positive role models for their athlete, and maintaining the highest standards of conduct and respect when interacting with students, other parents, coaches, other teams and officials. 2. Remembering athletes participate in athletics to have fun. It is their experience. 3. Supporting the capable leadership of the coaches during events or games. 4. Emphasizing the importance of skill development, teamwork, and acquiring a greater understanding of the sport over the idea of being the “best” or “winning.” 5. Teaching their athlete to adhere to the rules and expectations of them as participants and to resolve conflicts in a positive and controlled manner. 6. Insisting their athlete treat students, coaches, officials, and spectators with respect regardless of race, gender or ability. 7. Recognizing the value and importance of the coaches and volunteers who provide athletics opportunities for their child.
BOOSTER CLUB The ASD Booster Club is a parent volunteer organization that supports the Athletics Department by raising funds, organizing volunteers, staffing concession stands and providing opportunities for community events. All parents of ASD student-athletes are considered a member of the Booster Club. An elected governing board coordinates all efforts of the Booster Club, but all parents are welcome and encouraged to volunteer and participate in Booster events. Information regarding the Booster Club is on the Athletics GO Page, or you can contact the Booster Club at booster@asdubai.org.

The ASD Coach Coaches can be the most influential aspect of a young person’s life and with that comes a great deal of responsibility. Because of our commitment to excellence, coaches at ASD become one of the most important components of our athletic program. Coaches are responsible for modeling positive behavior and attitude at all times. Coaches are both a participant and teacher at the same time. In order to be considered an effective coach and role model, our coaches must be knowledgeable in their sport, prepared, motivating, and able to make adjustments during competition. In short, coaches have great responsibility and opportunity to mold young lives.
ASD COACHES: • Act professionally at all times, putting students first. • Keep open lines of communication with their players, parents and the Athletics Department. • Serve as a liaison between players and their teachers if additional support is needed for academic success • Know and follow policy set by the American School of Dubai. • Work with the Associate Director of Athletics when concerns arise. • Fulfill paperwork required to ensure students can participate in JEAC, DISSC & EAC. • Create and communicate meaningful practice schedules to allow for the improvement of athletes. • Ensure players are prepared for all upcoming competitions. • Supervise teams at all times. • Teach and model good sportsmanship as well as grace in both victory and defeat through both words and actions. • Maintain a team page on PowerSchool Learning. The team page may include training videos, encouragement, reminders, team photos and more. • Keep attendance records of practices and games as required by the Athletics Department.
ASD CONSIDERS THE FOLLOWING WHEN APPRAISING ITS COACHES • Was the season a positive experience for the athlete? • Did the players learn and improve throughout the season? • Did the individuals and team represent the school in an exemplary fashion? Success is measured if the above criteria are met. Wins and championships take care of themselves and will occur if and when everything else falls into place. ASD Coaches are respected and not judged on the basis of record. Both winning and losing are contingent upon any number of factors, including available talent, injuries and more.
2 0 2 1 - 2 022 MI DDL E SC HOOL ATHLTEICS HA NDB OOK
EXPECTATION OF COACHES: COACHES CODE OF ETHICS ASD believes coaches are the cornerstone of our program. Athletes are motivated and excel in sport when they have a coach they respect and admire. We have the highest expectations of our coaches at ASD: 1. Respect: A coach shows respect towards coaches, officials, players, opponents, oneself, the sport, the organization and property. 2. Fairness: The coach is fair to all athletes. The coach provides athletes with fair opportunities to demonstrate their ability and contribute to the teams’ success. 3. Caring: The coach maintains a positive, caring and encouraging attitude. 4. Integrity: A coach acts with integrity, keeping to their own personal values and the core values of ASD in word and action. 5. Responsibility: The coach’s role is to develop skills, confidence and self-esteem in every athlete. The coach promotes the values of team spirit and fair-play. The coach models leadership, composure, respect and fairness and makes decisions in the best interest of the athletes. The coach provides consequences to team members who display unsportsmanlike behavior. 6. Excellence: Coaches are expected to strive toward excellence in what they do, not only in the outcomes for our program but in the process of working with our athletes.
16
CHILD PROTECTION POLICY The American School of Dubai is committed to the protection, safety, and welfare of our students. ASD has adopted a Child Protection Policy that guides our professional practices for the safety and security of students. In accordance with the child protection policy, ASD strives to ensure understanding of child protection issues by all members of the community. ASD hiring practices include steps to ensure safety of all children. Employees have mandatory child protection training at the start of their tenure and regularly thereafter, as requested by the school. All ASD employees sign a code of conduct affirming their commitment to child protection and understanding of this policy. ASD students receive age-appropriate child safety education as part of the school’s curriculum. ASD parents have access to this policy and handbook and to educational sessions at ASD. Child protection resources are available to all employees on the ASD website.
