Welcome to the second edition of Oswestry Life magazine. We’ve received tremendous feedback from our readers on the first edition. It’s been a whirlwind of meetings and visits this month which have culminated in another jam-packed magazine. Read about videographer Tim, whose films of the town are going viral. If you’re in need of some motivation, read my interview with Whittington man Glen, who is attempting this year’s Virgin London marathon in his wheelchair. And if you’d like to make the most of this spring weather, try one of Graham Mitchell’s local walks.

Eight-time Paralympic gold medallist visits Shropshire charity An Oswestry-based charity had a very special visitor, when their patron, Paralympic champion, Sophie Christiansen, CBE, came along to the centre. Sophie, who is a Parequestrian Dressage rider, became a patron of The Movement Centre in 2014. The charity provides a specialist therapy, called Targeted Training, to children from across the UK who face problems with their movement control. Through a course of Targeted Training some children have been able to lift their head up for the first time to see the world around them, to stand or even to walk.

Centre’s Targeted Training therapy helps children to develop their functional skills, which can help with their confidence and make a real difference to their lives.”

Like Sophie, many of the children who attend the centre have cerebral palsy. “It is very important that children have the best opportunity to be as independent as possible”, said Sophie Christiansen. “The Movement

Victoria Handbury-Madin, head of fundraising and marketing, at The Movement Centre, said: “Sophie is such an inspiration to all us, but especially for children who come to The Movement Centre. We are very proud to have her as a patron and it is very exciting to have her visit us in Oswestry.”

Staff wave off Alex after working 43 years at RJAH

“It’s changed such a lot and some change is good, but I finally decided it was time to go. I’m going to miss all of the people I worked with. I’m now going to be a lady who lunches, do lots of craftwork and see my grandchildren.”

A Nurse who’s worked 43 years at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital has retired. Alex Radford was the blood transfusion facilitator in recovery at the Oswestry-based hospital’s theatre department. Friends and colleagues gave her a proper send off on her last day, with flowers, champagne and a buffet.

Recovery manager Kath Hughes is sad to see her go. She said: “I’ve been working with Alex for 21 years and she was a massive support to me when I first came to recovery. “I was new to the post and she seemed to know everything and she still seems to know everything!

Alex said: “It was very strange on the last day getting ready for work for the last time.

“She’s been a good friend, very supportive, but formidable, she stood for no nonsense. She always put her patients first and I’ve learnt a lot from her.”

“I’ll miss all my colleagues so much, but I am going to meet them as often as possible. I’ve loved every minute of working here, and I’ve had a motley band to work with!

Chief executive Mark Brandreth presented her with flowers on her last day and thanked her for her service on behalf of the trust and the board.

“It’s a remarkable achievement to have worked 43 years in the NHS, and even more incredible that she did it here in the same department!”

He said “I was two-years-old when Alex started working here. It’s a remarkable achievement to have worked 43 years in the NHS, and even more incredible that she did it here in the same department! “She is an outstanding individual who has worked hard to help make the hospital what it is today. I can’t thank her enough for her dedication to the Trust. So many of her colleagues took the time to see her off too. It’s great to see, but ultimately sad that this amazing nurse is retiring.” Kath added: “I am probably the recovery nurse and the manager I am now because of colleagues like Alex. “It’s going to be hard to fill her shoes. I’ve got an amazing team and I’m very lucky with that. But she was special, and they only come around once every 43 years!” Nurse Alex Radford (centre) with CEO Mark Brandreth (left) surrounded by the Theatres Dept.

Tree of Light funds supporting the community After the success of their Christmas Tree of Light 2016, members of Oswestry Rotary Club visited groups benefitting from the appeal to distribute the monies raised. Groups include:

Cambrian Rotary adopt a roundabout The Oswestry Cambrian club have adopted a roundabout in a turning circle and dropping-off point outside of the main entrance of the world-renowned Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital. Since the new wing was opened some years ago the roundabout has been somewhat neglected and had become rather unkempt. One of the hospitals “Friends” and Rotarian Brian Willis brought the situation to the club, who duly offered to refurbish it. After careful planning and permissions gained from the hospital the club engaged local builder Guy Wilkinson - who donated his time with a machine and trailer to remove all the weeds and bushes from the roundabout. Guy also managed to get a local building materials supplier Travis Perkins, to supply materials at cost price. Over two weekends, a team of Cambrian Rotarians and partners laid turf and spread chippings. The roundabout has a fresh new look, ready to receive a sculpture made from old and redundant surgical instruments once it is completed. The team also planted nearly 400 purple crocus bulbs in one segment of the roundabout ready for the 100 years of Foundation and the 25-year End Polio campaign next year. A great example of Rotary in the Community. A few hours of hard work by a team of people has made such an impact.

Summer Spectacular The British Ironwork Centre is hosting a summer evening spectacular. Picnic Proms in the Park, featuring Wrexham Symphony Orchestra will take place on Saturday 10th June from 6.30pm. Prom-goers will enjoy a mix of classic favourites mixed with blockbuster theme tunes. The event will close with a firework finale. Tickets cost £20 for adults and £10 for children. Visit: www. britishironworkcentre.co.uk.

• Oswestry’s Transhouse Trust, which helps patients with life-changing spinal injuries by providing shortterm accommodation and support • Age UK’s Oswestry Day Centre at Monkmoor Court, Oswestry, which meets on Thursdays between 10am and 2pm and, providing social activities to elderly and isolated members of the community • The Cricket Federation for the Disabled (Oswestry) gives people the opportunity to develop their cricket skills up to international level, regardless of the severity of their disability At Hope House children’s hospice, the group met Lynsey Kilvert, area fundraiser, who introduced them to patient Kiki Thomas. For many families like Kiki’s the staff at Hope House become like their own family, providing respite care for both the patient and their families. “Donations from the Tree of Light help us to continue to provide care and support for children with life-limiting illnesses and their families too of course. We are very grateful” said Lynsey. Further details are available on the club website at www.rotarycluboswestry.co.uk.

Volunteering initiative launched Oswestry- based charity, Qube, is launching a brand new volunteering initiative for Shropshire businesses called Teamworks. Teamworks brings local businesses and community groups together so that both organisations can benefit. Businesses can raise their profile in the local press and employees can develop their leadership, decisionmaking and negotiation skills, while at the same time gaining satisfaction from helping a worthwhile cause. Qube is the ‘go-to’ organisation for volunteering in North Shropshire with over 25 years of experience. Coordinator, Alex Drury, said that through its links to over 100 charities and community groups, Teamworks was able to organise a wide range of volunteering opportunities. She said: “Staff may want to take on a team challenge event, like planting a sensory garden in a residential home. Or perhaps individual employees would like to offer specialist support in a specialist area, like business planning or accounting. Either way, we’re able to offer a bespoke service for businesses, depending on the number of employees, their interests and the skills they want to develop.” If your company would like to explore ways to develop its corporate social responsibility package or meet staff continuous professional development (CPD) requirements, please call Alex at Qube on 01691 656882, email: teamworks@qube-oca.org.uk. Take the Oswestry Round Challenge The Oswestry Round Challenge, a 33-mile walking event which is now in its second year will be held on 10th June. It follows a route which forms a circuit around the town of Oswestry. It is a charity event for the benefit of Cancer Research UK and the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The challenge is based on the book ‘The Oswestry Round’ written by local author Dave Andrews with photographs by his wife Jane Trudgill. The book has sold over 600 copies and raised over £3000. Last year’s Oswestry Round Challenge raised a further £17,000. “Jane and I were really keen to repay the wonderful staff at the Lingen Davies Centre where I was treated for prostate cancer in 2014,” says Dave who has written a number of guides to the mountains of Wales. “I presented the idea for the book to the Oswestry Borderland Rotary and they took it up with great enthusiasm. Thanks to them we managed to secure sponsorship from local businesses. As a result, the publication costs were covered which means more money for the two charities we’re supporting.” The Oswestry Round Challenge is a one-day event beginning and ending at the Lion Quays hotel and spa complex to the north of the town. It climbs to Offa’s Dyke Path before heading south to Llanymynech, the southernmost point. From there, the canal system takes walkers through much flatter terrain to return to the Lion Quays. “The Challenge is a great way of getting exercise, meeting people and seeing the glorious countryside around Oswestry. It’s also a great way of raising money for two very important charities.” You can find more information about the Oswestry Round Challenge and about Dave’s book at www.oswestryround.co.uk where you can also register for the event.

In the spotlight

Focus on history

Charlotte Ruscoe meets the man that Oswestry can’t stop watching. If you haven’t watched one of Tim Mitchell’s videos yet, where have you been? Released only four weeks ago (at the time of writing) Tim has already racked up an impressive 84,445 views on social media across nine videos. To put that in perspective the population of Oswestry is just over 17,000. Tim’s unique style of filming, producing and presenting history documentaries has captivated the town and reignited an interest in its history. Tim (41) from Oswestry is probably better known as a wedding photographer, but – following an 18-month illness which stopped him working was advised by doctors to find a focus to help his recovery. “I needed to do something to help move me forward in my recovery and my interest in history and film were the perfect partnership to create something unique in the town,” says Tim, who is passionate about preserving the history of Oswestry for future generations to enjoy. “I’ve always liked history and that’s what inspired the first film about the Hill Fort. I don’t want to bore anyone with hundreds of facts. I like to tell the story from my perspective – giving enough information to interest the viewer and then encourage them to go and find out more,” enthused Tim. Not used to being in front of the camera - after posting his first video on facebook one evening Tim was nervous about the reaction he might get. What he didn’t expect was thousands of views in one evening. He says: “I thought - it’s mad that I’ve got that many views, a typical wedding video might get two or three hundred, I’d never got thousands of views before.” The most popular footage captured by the selftaught film-maker has been of the nearby Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Chirk, which has achieved over 10,000 views, followed by Whittington Castle with 7,500 views. Asked why he thinks his videos are so popular, he

responds: “I always get good feedback on my attitude and have built up a good rapport with my viewers. I think they trust what I’m telling them. I relate well to people, in fact every photography client I’ve ever had has turned into a friend.” When asked how he chooses which historic place to film, he is quick to respond that they have to be free to visit. “I want these places to be accessible for my audience, so that they can go out and touch and see it for themselves. My goal and purpose is to produce films that help preserve the history of the area. Our ancient buildings, sites and artefacts should be respected and conserved for future generations to enjoy themselves, not just on film.” What comes across on Tim’s videos is his infectious enthusiasm, combined with interesting facts and his own take on historic events and artefacts. If you weren’t interested in the Hill Fort before, you will be after watching Tim’s video. The future for the film-maker looks bright as he has inadvertently created enquiries from businesses looking to tap into his online popularity. “I don’t do it for any money,” adds Tim, who has to create the videos in his spare time, around his wedding, portraits and commercial video business. “All my history films are not-for-profit.” Tim has recently set up a go fund me page to cover his travel costs. “If people enjoy the films I’d encourage them to just offer a small donation so I can keep making them. The more funding I get, the bigger the films can become in the future.” www.gofundme.com/historyinthemakingsince1975 www.facebook.com/History-in-the-making-135576623620688/ www.youtube.com/user/timmitchphoto Oswestry life | 9

RAISING FUNDS For many years now, Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital and Severn Hospice have enjoyed a successful partnership and 2017 will see the hospital raising more funds than ever before in memory of a colleague. On 16th January 2016, Mr Jan Sobczuk sadly passed away at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital, a place he called his ‘home’. Jan was the hospital’s serving pharmacy manager, a position he had held for the past 15 years and died from cancer following a short period of illness. Following the requiem mass and cremation, which was attended by over 65 current and past employees, Jan’s family had asked for donations to be made to Severn Hospice. Carol Evans, who had worked with Jan in the pharmacy department began a collection at the hospital and was delighted to hand over a cheque for £200 to Severn Hospice. A book of remembrance was also given to Jan’s family by the hospital. Mike Haffenden, Nuffield Health Shrewsbury hospital director comments: “We have worked with Severn Hospice for many years and it seems a fitting tribute to our dear colleague Jan, to be working with Severn Hospice in 2017. Jan was a committed and dedicated member of the team and he will be sadly missed.” Lucy Ruff, fundraising manager at Severn Hospice said: “We are very grateful to Nuffield Health for this donation. Severn Hospice provides specialist care and support free of charge to families across Shropshire and Mid Wales who are living with an incurable illness. The care we provide is free of charge, but not without cost and every year we need to raise around £7 million. We are only able 10

to care for people when they need it most,” added Lucy.

This is only the start of events that the hospital will be doing to raise money in memory of Jan. In May the hospital’s annual charity quiz evening will be dedicated to Jan and in June a team from Nuffield will be taking part in the Severn Hospice Colour Run – whilst another team will be part of the ‘paint brigade’ and will be armed with the green paint!

“We are delighted that Nuffield Health has joined us as a sponsor for our Severn Hospice Colour Run. This is all set to be a really great day. On Saturday 10th June Telford Town Park will be turned into a kaleidoscope of colour as people walk, jog or run the 5km course and get covered in powdered paint. As well as being great fun for all ages and abilities, everyone taking part is raising money for Severn Hospice and helping to ensure we are here

Marathon man Glen

As world-class athletes prepare to take to the streets of the capital in this year’s Virgin London marathon, a Whittington man is preparing to take on the challenge in a wheelchair Glen Leversedge suffered life-changing injuries after a fall at work in March 2014. The 50-year-old, who was working as a scaffolder at the time, fell backwards when a strap he was tightening snapped, sending him hurtling head-first onto a concrete landing. The tenfoot fall rendered him unconscious with a fractured skull, bleed on the brain and a broken spine. He was airlifted to Stoke hospital where he remained for two weeks, before being transferred to the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen. Despite his life-threatening injuries, Glen made a remarkable recovery thanks to the air ambulance who he credits with saving his life. “It was really hard adapting to life in a wheelchair. When I returned home I was confined to a couple of rooms downstairs, the chair wouldn’t even fit past the doors. I became severely depressed, even considering suicide.” With the right medication and counselling, dad-of-six Glen eventually found solace in sport. “My physio recommended I could go rowing in an adapted boat and that gave me the confidence to try more sports. I started playing tennis and met a friend called Craig – a really inspirational guy who has been paralysed for 17 years. It was him that suggested we should do the Shrewsbury half marathon together. That was my first marathon and I finished in two hours 18 minutes.” After eventually being re-homed in Whittington, Glen decided to use his new-found enthusiasm for sport to pay back those who had helped him in his time of need. His schedule over the coming months is nothing short of inspirational. In preparation for the London Marathon in April, Glen will do a 12-hour continuous ‘push’ around the grounds of the RJAH hospital to raise money for the spinal ward. Following this he will be taking part in the London marathon on 23rd April as he competes in the gruelling 26-mile race for charity Back Up. On 30th April, he takes on the Oswestry half marathon and 22nd May he has set himself the challenge with two other wheelchair users of completing five marathons in five days, all from the seat of his NHS-issue wheelchair.

“I’ve accepted I’m in a chair for the rest of my life. But I haven’t accepted there’s things I can’t do he says. “I’ve laid a block paved patio, I do all the gardening myself – operating the lawnmower in my chair is a bit of a skill. I’ve also recently re-decorated my bungalow, I just adapted the paintbrushes to allow me to reach up from my chair to do all the cutting-in. “I’ve accepted I’m in a chair for the rest of my life. But I haven’t accepted there’s things I can’t do. I’ll just find a way around it.” Glen challenges himself daily – recently pushing uphill from the fire station to the racecourse car park. “That was hard,” he admits, “I had to fight to stay in the chair as the incline was forcing the chair to tip backwards, but it felt great getting to the top. I reached 34mph in my chair on the way back down!” Glen trains for his marathons at midnight when the roads are quiet. He’s adapted his chair to feature some make-shift head and rear lights. When the weather is fair, he’ll train up to four times per week. “I recently got stopped by the police on the Nesscliffe bypass cycle path on my way to Shrewsbury at 2am. They just checked I was okay and let me carry on.

“I’ve been saving up to get another chair,” said Glen who has been covering 30-50 miles each week in training. I can only get my chair replaced by the NHS after five years use and because I use it for daily life and training, it’s becoming a little worn out.”

“I feel lucky. There are so many more facilities around for wheelchair users than there used to be. And I’ve got a wonderful family and community who support me. My daughter Beth in particular is my rock, my hero and I’d be lost without her.”

Not a person to let a wheelchair stand in his way, Glen lives an independent lifestyle and works as a volunteer at Café Life on Cabin Lane. “I don’t like to rely on anyone, I want to be as independent as possible,”

To sponsor Glen for the London marathon, visit: http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/GlenLeversedge and help him reach his target of £2000 for Back Up, a spinal cord injury charity.

Lagom Your Life

Last year saw many of us striving to reach the pinnacle of cosiness, buying in to the Scandinavian trend Hygge. Now there’s an even better, more sustainable and gratifying lifestyle dominating 2017… Lagom (pronounced Lar-gom) translates to “not too much, not too little,” and is a way of living as opposed to a momentary state of bliss. The idea of being frugal, fair and leading the perfectly balanced life is something we can all adopt. While hygge encouraged followers to indulge with luxurious candles, expensive wool blankets and mounds of rich cakes and coffees, the concept of lagom is quite the opposite, encouraging attitudes, behaviours and choices that benefit your overall wellbeing and happiness, your bank balance and the environment. Catharina Bjorkman, Contura Marketing and Style Director, says: “Following the popularity of Hygge in 2016, 2017 will be all about ‘Lagom.’ Lagom is a Swedish term describing balance and moderation. It’s a lifestyle

Midnattssol small wooden candle holder £32, Isak.co.uk

Upcycling, recycling and using sustainable materials where possible is the Lagom way to enjoy the home comforts you love, without taking too much from the planet choice, of not having or taking too little or too much of anything. As well as being applicable to work-life balance and frugality, the term defines a sustainable way of living, which translates aptly into the context of homes and interiors. Upcycling, recycling and using sustainable materials where possible is the Lagom way to enjoy the home comforts you love, without taking too much from the planet. “Wood burning stoves are central to those looking to style their home around a Lagom ethic, since wood is one of the most environmentally friendly fuels. It is a sustainable, renewable energy source, virtually carbon neutral and is also very cost efficient.”

Secret Agent

CREATE YOUR DREAM HOME

Kate Howell, of Woodhead Oswestry Sales and Lettings in the centre of town, is our ‘Secret Agent’, lifting the lid on the world of property. This month, Kate is full of the joys of the spring property market Spring is traditionally the busiest time of year for the residential property market as more homeowners look for a move and this year will be no exception. Despite the Government failing to act in the best interest of the property market in their latest budget, we still expect to see the usual upturn in listings for April. The spring budget announcements did not address the stamp duty tax thresholds that are strangling the middle and higher end of the market. It also failed to backtrack on recent stamp duty hikes for landlords or the lettings fees ban, slowing down sales at the lower end. But, politics to one side - as the weather starts to improve and gardens come into bloom, our homes start looking their best and naturally this is a great time to display them for sale. After all, Rightmove report that two in five buyers have already decided on whether they’re going to buy a house before they’ve even reached the hallway – making outside spaces, kerb appeal and garden areas a major influence.

BEFORE If you’ve outgrown your current home, moving to a new house doesn’t have to be your only option. Many homeowners are choosing to extend or remodel their property instead. This unassuming three bedroom semi-detached in Park Hall near Oswestry has been transformed into a contemporary and extremely stylish family home. Architectural designer Craig Marston of Ke-design suggested knocking down the existing 1970’s single storey flat roof extension and starting again with an open plan, spacious and light extension that turned it into the clients’ dream home.

More houses come on the market in April than any other month, which means your house will be getting the maximum amount of attention on it from others actively looking to move. Market trend data from the Land Registry shows that sales figures start to rise quite noticeably in April, peaking in August, indicating those properties were likely listed in spring. You could sell your house for more too, as pricing trends from Halifax Price Index show that prices tend to be higher in the spring and summer months’, sometimes by as much as 6.5%. Despite it being a confident month in sales terms, the same rules still apply – the market is price sensitive with buyers reluctant to buy if property is priced just a few percent too high. Sellers are 40% more likely to sell if priced correctly when they first come to market, so it’s vital to take advice from a qualified valuer. There’s never a bad time of year to start showing off your home to potential buyers, and at Woodheads we can help you reach the right buyer, whatever time of year. 16

The power of three

An independent estate agent is offering a more individual approach to selling property, thanks to a unique valuations team which helps streamline the sales and lettings decision process for their customers. Woodhead Oswestry Sales and Lettings created the team to provide a better service to their customers who need advice on the best course of action for their property. The team of nine, led by owner Kate Howell, lettings manager Glenys Pritchard and valuations manager Jill Gannon will be working in collaboration to deal quickly and efficiently with both new and existing customers. Their combined knowledge and experience spans over 60 years in the Oswestry market. With unique access to the lucrative London market through representing the Guild of Property Professionals in Oswestry, Woodheads are able to display properties in their prestigious London Park Lane office. The trio of valuers are equipped to offer three different routes to market to suit the clients’ needs at that time. Owner Kate Howell says: “Sometimes property owners are in situations where they don’t know or can’t decide what to do with their property. That’s when we can present the best option for them. We can advise on

lettings prices, how quickly their property might sell on the market or, if an auction might be right for them.” The agent, who this month has agreed sales on three properties within an hour of coming on the market, is desperate for properties to satisfy demand from proceedable or cash buyers, with a budget up to £1 million. She is increasingly seeing situations where she is brokering deals for properties before they even come onto the market, due to the number of buyers waiting for popular areas. Kate adds: “The buyers I have waiting know what they want, so I endeavour to ‘marry’ them up to the right property. It’s a sellers’ market right now, and if any house is priced and marketed correctly, it will sell quickly. I believe we offer the best marketing package for any property in Oswestry and the borders and that’s why we continue to lead in house sales for this area.” To arrange a free, no obligation valuation of your home, call Woodhead on 01691 680044.

The school ethos is underpinned by shared Christian values. It’s a fun place to be, with both creativity and enjoyment celebrated, alongside academic achievements. Above all, it provides a safe place at the heart of the community, where every individual is valued. Due to convert to Academy status on 1st April 2017, the school will become part of St Chad’s Multi Academy Trust within the Church of England Central Educational Trust (CECET). The move provides opportunities to further increase the educational outcomes for pupils. The Church of England Central Education Trust (CECET) is a unique and forward thinking strategic partnership which brings together the Dioceses of Birmingham and Lichfield and the University of Wolverhampton. CECET’s purposes are threefold: • to secure high standards so that all children and young people can achieve;

• to provide a strong framework for school improvement and the professional development of school staff and leaders; and

• to facilitate the systematic expansion of academies and other new educational structures and partnerships. The trust’s aim is that all church schools should be at least good schools where children can be offered the richness of experience that

“We celebrate British diversity and equality, welcoming all faiths and no-faith into schoo, because we value and respect all God’s children and their families. With good links to Holy Trinity Church alongside other special places of worship - pupils can support and enrich each other’s understanding of being part of a multi-cultural society. “We celebrate British diversity and equality, welcoming all faiths and no-faith into school, because we value and respect all God’s children and their families. “We aim to ensure that our pupils make good progress by feeling safe, secure, confident and enthusiastic about their learning experiences. Nurturing each child’s uniqueness and responding to their individual needs matters here at Holy Trinity.” The school encourages families to come and meet them and take a look at the impressive facilities on offer for themselves. Mrs Edwards adds: “We love to show the pupils at work, so you can discover how your child could thrive here. Trinity Twos Holy Trinity C of E Primary Academy and Nursery ‘Trinity Twos’ is the new name for the 2 year old provision at Holy Trinity CE Primary Academy. We have now been up and running for a month in our new specially converted toddler classroom with great success! We offer 15 hours of free childcare under the governments 24U scheme with plans to offer additional ‘paid for’ spaces if parents are not eligible for the 24U scheme. As Easter approaches and Summer Term starts we have spaces available in the 2 year old class and also in the Nursery. Children can start Nursery

The Marches School recently took 40 students skiing to Zell in Austria for the opportunity to learn and progress in snow sport skills whilst embracing Austrian culture. Annabel wins bronze

“I enjoyed rising to the challenge that the competition gave me.” Annabel said: “I enjoyed rising to the challenge that the competition gave me and it has set a bench mark for what I can expect next time I am invited to a high calibre competition. Beethoven’s beautiful borderlands Oswestry is surrounded by beautiful countryside and boasts a proud history, but what has inspired a London-based tour company to offer to spend a week at the Wynnstay Hotel to enjoy all these things is the Whittington International Chamber Music Festival with its six evening concerts of Beethoven in May. “Beethoven in the Borders” is the fifth Whittington Festival to present a sequence of spring concerts celebrating just one famous composer. Previous festivals have focussed on Brahms, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Mozart, and the immersion into the music and mind of each genius in turn has succeeded in building an audience from all over Shropshire, the Midlands and Mid-Wales. The one-composer model has also contributed to the festival’s success in attracting world class musicians from around seven different countries. It provides a rare opportunity for them to break from their schedule of flitting between big cities to spend ten days in spectacular surroundings rehearsing and performing seminal works they can either add to their repertoire or study afresh with friends. The brilliant Elias String Quartet are among this year’s fifteen artists.

The brilliant Elias String Quartet

Schools and community groups in and around Oswestry benefitting from this residency, and a highlight of the festival is a short performance given at the Friday concert by young musicians together with the professional ensemble. A key aim of the festival is to introduce young people generally to the magic of live classical music and that’s why tickets are free for anybody aged 8-25. If it applies to you, you just need to book online. Tickets at £15 can be ordered through the website www.whittingtonmusicfestival.org.uk or bought at Rowanthorn, Old Chapel Court (next to Oswestry’s main car park), or Whittington Post Office. Or you can try your luck at the door of Whittington church.

Non-surgical Lipo Suction treatment Jane Millington, owner and head practitioner at Body and Face Options clinic in Maesbury Marsh, is our beauty expert. This month she reveals a cuttingedge non-invasive treatment called My-Lipo, which removes inches off specific body areas. Q. Is this like liposuction? A. No, My - Lipo is an alternative to surgical liposuction. It is very different to other surgical liposuction treatments, because surgical liposuction is where a calendula is inserted into the problem area, and then sucks out the unwanted fat in lumps often leaving the skin with indentations and a dimpled effect after treatment. Jane Millington M.S.B.T.H I.F.H.B.C I.H.B.C

Q. How is My–Lipo different then? A. Non surgical My-Lipo treatment is very different. By using heat paddles, it heats the fat in the problem area which supponifies the fat itself making it into a liquid form, therefore easier

Aprils consultation with Jane Millington to drain from the body. This then collapses the fat cells and gives a smooth finish after treatment. The fat itself is then stored as energy in the addipose tissue hence why we recommend that within 24 hours after treatment the client should commence some form of exercise from anything from a 20 minute walk to a full workout. Q. What results can I expect? A. Clients have lost anywhere between two to six inches over a course of treatments. Q. Will it get rid of cellulite. A. Clients have noticed an improvement in the appearance of cellulite. Q. What happens after my treatment? A. Hydration is critical. Drink plenty of water (ideally eight 8oz glasses of water) spread throughout the day. Coffee and alcohol are discouraged. We also offer Endermoligie which contours and sculpts the body and is also used within the medical field. We have also launced Promax Lipo which tightens up skin on problem areas such as under arms, abdomen, thighs and any other area where loose skin is a problem.

Vegan wines You might be a bit confused about the term ‘vegan wine’ – surely all wines are vegan? I’ll try to explain why some wines might contain animal products. To make wine, grapes are picked from vines, sorted, de-stemmed and crushed. The juice is then separated from the solid remains of the grapes, by pressing, either before fermentation (for white wine) or after fermentation (for rosé or red). The fermentation turns the sugar in the grapes into alcohol, giving us wine. Before the wine is ready for sale, other processes take place. For example, any obvious ‘bits’ (such as grape skin or dead yeast cells), are removed by various methods, such as racking. Another method for clarifying the wine, which is widely used, is fining - and it is this process which can make the wine either suitable for vegans or not. Fining agents remove the haziness and any tiny bits of skin that are suspended in the wine. Wine producers can choose from a range of fining agents, some of which are derived from animals. Egg whites, casein (a protein from milk), gelatine or isinglass (from fish bladders) can be used, none of which would be acceptable in a vegan diet. There are alternatives which come from mineral sources like bentonite clay, or activated charcoal from carbon. Vegans who want to avoid such wines need to know which are available to them. Unfortunately, many producers, especially in Europe, don’t label their wines as vegan friendly, so although many wines on the shelves are suitable for vegans, it can be hard to tell which! Speak to your local wine expert, who will be able to pick the best wine for you.

Easter treats for sharing Easter is the perfect excuse to entertain family and friends and to indulge in a few sugary treats, especially if you’ve been holier than though cutting back on the carbs over Lent. Hot Cross Buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday. These fruity favourites are steeped in superstition and sharing one is said to cement friendships. Having said that, when they’re warm, buttered, and delightfully tempting, it’s easy to forget your pals.

Hot cross buns (www.fabflour.co.uk)

Makes 12 buns, cooking time 20 mins Ingredients 25g/1oz fresh yeast or 10ml/2 tsp fast action easy blend yeast 150ml/6 floz milk 2 eggs 400g/14oz strong breadmaking flour 5ml/1 tsp salt 5ml/1 level tsp mixed spice 2.5ml/½ tsp cinnamon 2.5ml/½ tsp nutmeg 75g/3oz golden caster sugar 50g/2oz butter 150g/5oz currants 100g/4oz mixed peel Method Mix butter and milk and warm until the butter has melted. Add the yeast and sift the flour, salt and spices into a bowl. Add the

currants and peel and stir to ensure they are well coated. Add the sugar. Stir in the liquid and beaten eggs to form a soft dough. Turn onto a well-floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes until smooth and no longer sticky. Divide the dough into 12 and shape into buns. Place the buns well apart on greased baking tray. To make crosses, slash the buns with a sharp knife or use thin strips of pastry or pipe on crosses using a paste made from 2tbsp each of plain flour and water. Cover the buns and leave to rise in a warm place until double in size - about 1 hour. Bake in a hot oven, 200C/gas 6 for 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Brush hot buns with a sugar/water syrup.

Meet the chef Tom Roberts from Llynclys is head chef at Sweeney Hall Hotel, Morda. He is just 30 years old and has worked at Sweeney Hall for an impressive 14 years. What made you want to become a chef? I went for a job as a waiter/kitchen assistant when I was 15 for some extra money and as soon as I walked in and watched the head chef plate up a meal I was hooked, and his style of food was classic British dishes with continental influences. I guess you could say that shaped my style of cooking from then on. Where else have you trained and worked? I started at the Bradford Arms in LLanymnech at 15 as a waiter and kitchen assistant and towards the end I managed the bar, before moving to Sweeney Hall. All the training I’ve had has been on the job, it’s the best way to gain experience and hone your skills. I recently started working towards NVQs in management and professional cookery. I’ve been privileged to work with some good

chefs over the years and have always kept an open mind about learning new things What chefs do you admire most? I enjoy the comfort style of food at the moment, so someone like Tom Kerridge. What do you enjoy about working at Sweeney Hall? The building is incredible to look at and my colleagues are hardworking and passionate about the job. I love that our menus are forever changing with seasons and trends and using local ingredients and suppliers. What is your favourite dish? My current favourite is a lovely local lamb rump that’s slow cooked and melts in your mouth, with a leek mash and a port reduction. What’s your favourite tipple? I always used to be a beer man, but in the last couple of years I do enjoy a glass or two of red wine and a good gin. It’s hard not to like gin working at the Sweeney, we have such a wide range of gins and different tonics. This year’s gin festival is being held 21 – 23 July. What is the secret of really good food? There’s no secret, just don’t over-complicate

a dish and most importantly; use the correct seasoning. What ingredient couldn’t you live without? Salt, it’s something that transforms a whole dish and brings out the flavours. Do you have a top tip for keen cooking enthusiasts? Don’t worry if you mess up when trying something new, most of the time you have to fail before you can succeed. Always be open minded to trying new dishes and learning new skills.

Food for all at Brooks Oswestry restaurant Brooks around the Corner is passionate about serving food that everyone can eat and have adapted their menus to suit their customers’ changing dietary needs.

Established 11 years ago, on Church Street in Oswestry, Brooks have seen a huge increase in the demand of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan meals. “Our biggest change to the menus over the years has been to accommodate the changing dietary requirements of our customers. We have always tried to move with times,” explains head chef Matthew Newton, “we’re passionate about creating food that all our customers can eat. Just because someone can’t eat a certain ingredient, we’re determined that shouldn’t impact their dining experience and will always come up with a series of alternatives for them that are just as delicious.” Dishes on the restaurant’s menu are marked as vegetarian and glutenfree, but the restaurant always recommend that customers prewarn them if they have any special dietary requirements: “This gives us a chance to source additional ingredients and preprepare a special menu for them,” adds Matthew.

The early bird menu (5.30pm – 7.30pm Tues to Friday) has had to extend its hours on a Thursday due to it’s popularity Head Chef Matthew works alongside Paul Baker and Dale Dyke who all endeavour to provide the same quality dining experience regardless of how restricted the diet is. Brooks are currently running a popular early bird menu, available 5.30pm – 7.30pm Tuesday to Friday and on Thursday night the menu runs until 8pm due to its popularity. Customers can choose between two courses for £14.99 or three courses for £17.99.

Couple fired up for pizza business venture Husband and wife team Amber and Jolyon Iles started Amber’s Woodfired Kitchen after a lifelong passion for food and hospitality spanning over 20 years. A mobile events and wedding caterer, the firm specialises in wood fired pizza, mezze, world foods and street food, taking inspiration from the couple’s travels around the world. With a kitchen in Selattyn, just outside Oswestry, the couple boast a five star hygiene rating.

We are lucky to have so many good quality butchers and food producers on our doorstep.”

“We met while we were both ‘cheffing’ and after a brief spell away from the industry, we took a giant leap of faith in our cooking abilities and started a business together in 2013,” says Amber.

built pizza van, which is fitted with a top-of-the-range wood fired oven and everything we need to serve pizza to the masses.”

Since then the business has grown significantly and caters for multiple events every weekend during the summer months.

Some of Amber’s most memorable moments, include feeding actor Rhys Ifans, comedian Josh Widdicombe and Indie band Athlete.

“I love being my own boss,” adds Amber, “I get an immense sense of satisfaction from seeing people eat the food that I have cooked. The reward is instant. I also love working with good quality local produce in my recipes. We are lucky to have so many good quality butchers and food producers on our doorstep.”

The business, which employees up to six people in the high season, recruits and trains employees from April each year and encourages anyone with an interest to get in touch with them.

As well as countless weddings across Shropshire and Cheshire, the couple cater for four national festivals each year. This year sees them return to The National Eisteddfod of Wales for an impressive fifth consecutive year. They will also be debuting at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod this summer. “We’re particularly excited to return with our brand new, custom

The future for Amber’s Wood Fired Kitchen looks set to be a bright one. “The new pizza van will open up so many opportunities for us. It is especially appealing to the wedding and corporate markets. We would like to take our van into town and city centres and in time my ambition is to open my own bistro, café or restaurant in Shropshire.” To taste some of the delicious food on offer, you can find them at Stonehouse Brewery on Fridays between 5-7pm and on Saturdays 12-5pm from Easter.

Nostalgia

The Cross through the ages

From castle courtyard to thriving market, David Owen examines the history of Oswestry’s Cross. The Cross has been the commercial centre of Oswestry since the 16th century, located on the junction of three important town streets; Church Street, Willow Street and Cross Street. The central area of the Cross was occupied by a market building until the early 18th century when it was demolished and replaced by a wooden cross and benches which lasted until the 1780’s. In 1784 a well was sunk and a pump installed and survived until 1862 when it was replaced by an ornamental fountain. The fountain itself was removed in 1882 and rebuilt in the castle grounds where it stood until 2006 when it was restored and moved back to its original home. The shop buildings that surround the Cross have changed remarkably little since the 19th Century, apart from those that stand between Santander and The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, which were demolished in the mid 20th century. The Edinburgh Woollen Mill building was, of course, the entrance to the Cross

Market and the right-hand side of the building housed the town’s police station until the 1920’s. Opposite the Cross is M & Co. which will forever be known as R&R’s to those of a more mature age. Richard and Robert Hughes established R&R Hughes in 1868 and for many years it was the town’s premier drapery store. The frontage of the building has changed several times over the years with the current ‘mock Tudor’ fascia being added in the 1930’s. Next door to R&R’s (now Costa) was the Maypole Dairy Company, one of many grocery stores that stood in the area surrounding the Cross until the 1960’s and 70’s. The HSBC (formerly the Midland Bank) have occupied their current building since its erection in 1890. As can be seen from the oldest of the pictures on this page, the old building on the site (demolished in 1888) housed several different businesses including a printers, auctioneers and grocery store. The secret to seeing Oswestry as it was over 100 years ago is simply to look up! Whilst all the frontages may have changed, the buildings behind them, in the main, have not and nowhere is this more so than the area around the Cross. Oswestry life

Doctor, Doctor Gimme the News R Palmer

I don’t know how many of you will remember the song in my title from 1979? But that’s really the point of this month’s message: How much of what the doctor tells you do you think you remember? Research suggests it’s certainly less than half, and probably not the half the doctor wanted you to remember either! Part of the problem is that doctors speak another language. When I studied medicine in my teens they taught me to speak “medical”. It’s a bit of a throwback to times when doctors didn’t really have many effective treatments and long, impressive (often Latin) words at least gave them some credibility. Having said that it is still with us: You go to see your doctor with a painful, red lump on your ear that’s been there for some time and getting you a bit worried. “Ah” the doctor says, “You’ve got Chondrodermatitis chronica helicis”. You are very impressed! The doctor might even add “dolores” to make it even more stunning. “And what does that mean?” you ask “Well” says the doctor hesitantly “it means you have a painful, red lump on your ear that’s been there for some time….and you’re a bit worried about it” Exactly what you originally said – but in Latin now! Being a GP involves dealing with the anxious, the ill and

sometimes the difficult patient. Uniquely in medicine GPs do this behind closed doors: there is no team of other doctors or nurses who have seen this patient for the same problem. More than 90% of cases are managed with no other referrals or tests. It can be a real challenge and involves more uncertainty than patients realise – perhaps more than they want to realise too! Doctors can sometimes resort to medical language to help cope with some of this uncertainty. No-one knows why patients get this painful swelling on the ear and, other than surgery, there is no treatment. Giving it an impressive name makes us look at least a bit knowledgeable! So, if you don’t understand something: Ask. Try and find a doctor who “speaks your language”. Often GPs go into medicine because getting to know their patients as individuals is more important to them that getting to know about individual diseases. Good communication is the key as Rudyard Kipling reminds us: “Words are the most powerful drug used by mankind.”

Can I stop my husband from cashing in his pension?

Stevens Lucas

Solicitors, Solicitor-Advocates & Barristers

Q: I am intending to start divorce proceedings against my husband as we have not been intimate for 15 years and I really cannot live like this anymore. I recently retired and I am looking forward at long last to being able to relax and enjoy life, but I do not want to be spending the rest of my retirement without having sex. However, my husband is due to reach retirement age soon and he intends to cash in his pension which could affect my future if I divorce him. Is there anything I can do to stop him cashing in his pension? A: Within the divorce you will need to ask the Court

to make a financial Order. Before making a financial Order, the Judge will want to see disclosure of all yours and your husband’s financial affairs before making a final decision. If you suspect that your husband is trying to hide or spend any of his assets, which may include savings, property or even pensions or investments, under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 you can ask the Court to make an Order which will effectively ‘freeze’ those assets and will prevent your husband from dealing with the asset in any way until the Court decides what it wants to do with the asset. In light of the above you should make an urgent appointment with a Solicitor who specialises in divorce and financial matters relating to divorce and explain the situation. Provided you can convince the Court that your husband has a real intention to cash in his pension it should be relatively simple to obtain an Order preventing him from dealing with the pension until the Court has decided what to do with it.

Rambles with a camera Walker, photographer and artist Graham ‘Grum’ Mitchell focuses on some of the region’s hidden gems on a walk around his beloved hometown of Oswestry

A spring in your step After being teased with unseasonable temperatures and battered by gale force winds, spring is finally here. March 20th, the vernal equinox, was officially the first day of spring, but most of us have been saying spring is on its way since the first snowdrops appeared in January. I suppose spring is my favourite season. Day by day the trees start showing a pale green tinge, and the whole countryside starts to wake up. There is some warmth in the sun, and the hedgerows start to blossom. As well as the flowers, spring is an ideal time to watch and photograph our wildlife, especially with the young beginning to make an appearance. The migrant birds are returning, and the lack of thick summer foliage makes spotting easier. The bees and butterflies start to appear, and birdsong reaches a peak. The cuckoo returns in late March but you’ll be lucky to see one. The yellowhammer stays all year, and is easier to spot once you hear its call. It is said to sound like “a little bit of bread and no cheese” with a bit of imagination.

A great spot for yellowhammers is on the Old Hillfort. The skylarks are also beginning to return to their breeding sites. Unfortunately declining populations mean their beautiful song is not so commonly heard today. Ifton Meadows , however, provides a perfect habitat. On your walks, It is worth looking twice at some of the birds that flash past. They all are wonderful, and many surprisingly colourful. Most people wouldn’t instantly recognise the wood warbler or reed bunting, but they are part of our wonderful local environment. So where to go? From early April look out for early purple orchids at Llynclys common and incredible displays of cowslips toward the Moelydd, once you have climbed through Jones’ Rough at Nantmawr. Then the main event starts mid-month, when primroses, violets and lesser celandine give way to bluebells and then wild garlic. Price’s Dingle at Ifton Meadows has the most spectacular display of wild garlic you have ever seen. You may still catch some scarlet elf cup fungi there. Other great bluebell locations are the Old Racecourse, and of course the Hillfort with the ramparts swathed in blue. Oswestry life | 57

Hatching Easter chick

Lambs are starting to appear in the nearby fields, daffodils are out and we’ve even had a few days of early Spring sunshine! Celebrate spring by doing with this super cute Easter chick craft with your little ones :)

You will need:

2 pieces of card (one colour of your choice, the other yellow) Child scissors; Felt tips; Googly eyes Glue; Stickers; Metal paper fastener

Method:

1) Cut a large egg shape from your non-yellow card. Next cut a zig-zag line across the egg shape. 2) From your yellow card cut a basic chick shape (body and head with beak) ensuring the chick is smaller than your egg shape. 3) Decorate your egg with stickers, add an eye to your chick and any decorative touches you’d like to add. 4) Glue your chick to the non-decorated lower side of your egg, ensuring the chicks head peeks above. 5) Secure the upper section to the lower section of the egg at the corner with a paper fastener so the egg hinges & ‘hatches’.

LAST WORD Once in a while I come across a store that really puts a smile on my face. Somewhere that welcomes children, somewhere that actively encourages them to interact and Booka is one of those places.

New mums, working mums, stay-at-home mums, step-mums, foster mums – being a mum (or a dad for that matter) is hard work, that’s why once a year we get to celebrate being mum. If you’re a mother to young children you’ll know the feeling of waking up on Mother’s Day (at 6am!) to be greeted by your darling angels arguing over who is going to give you their homemade card and proceeding to fight over who is going to open the present they carefully made and haphazardly wrapped for you. It might sound a bit chaotic, but it’s a pleasure, because it won’t last forever and I cherish every moment. Sometimes I have to remind myself how lucky I am. Having a five-year-old and twoyear-old can sometimes test not only my patience, but also my detective skills, resilience and occasionally my sanity. A quick trip to the supermarket can often turn into a lengthy game of hide-andseek, while trying to walk across a car park without getting run over is often a game of chance. Sometimes we just have to roll with it and play along with them. Yes, that’s right I’m letting my daughter re-stack the store shelves and my son push the trolley. I might get a few strange looks from shoppers, but at least I know I can get the shopping done this way. Once in a while I come across a store that really puts a smile on my face. Somewhere that welcomes children, somewhere that actively encourages them to interact and Booka is one of those places. Not only do they have a dedicated children’s book corner, they have play tables full of books and toys. It’s so refreshing to visit somewhere that mum’s can feel at ease letting

66

| Oswestry life

their children play and explore, while also sparking their interest in books. With the weather starting to thaw, it’s wonderful to start to see Oswestry come alive again on the streets. Tables start to appear outside of cafes and the park is teeming with families once again. More options open to keep children occupied and the town becomes an even better place for a family day out. As a working mum, the weekends I spend with my children are precious and I’m always keen to take them out so we make the most of our time together. My current routine involves pancakes at Liar Liar, followed by sweets at Mollies, a trip to Booka bookshop and then heading for the play area in Cae Glas Park. All mothers need some time out every now and then. And I got mine this month with a visit to two businesses, both hidden away in barn conversions outside Oswestry. The first is Body and Face Options in Maesbrook, where I enjoyed a session of microdermabrasion. Established over 26 years it is one of the most advanced aesthetic clinics in Europe. Next stop was to a brand-new business, located on Racecourse road. Hayes Barn is a newly-opened luxury venue. It’s got a really impressive bar area and a very homely atmosphere, with freshly cooked food served-up with witty banter from owner Sophie. However you spent your Mother’s Day this year, I hope it ended like mine. Seeing your children tucked up in bed, fast asleep realising what a great job you’re doing. Because whether you’re a new mum, working mum, stay-at-home mum, step-mum or foster mum, we all have a job to do and we’re doing it the best way we know how.
