Oswestry Life November 2024

Page 1

to Oswestry Life Welcome

Remember, remember the 5th of November...well, in town it’s going to be the 2nd because that’s when the Council and Oswestry Borderland Rotary hold their annual fireworks display in Cae Glas Park with laser light show and live music. If you then fancy a traditional bonfire, head to The Sweeney’s on the 5th. They’re running free shuttle buses from town to the Sweeney and back.

Top tip for children: if your little one is particularly sensitive to noise, you’ll find ear defenders for kids easily with a quick search in Google for shops in Oswestry selling them.

Have a safe and fun Bonfire Night.

Volunteers urgently needed

A local charity is urgently seeking volunteer helpers to lend a hand at Oswestry Day Centre. The day centre, run by Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, is situated at Monkmoor Court, Oswestry, and is open to members each Thursday. Day centre helpers assist with the running of the day centre – meeting and greeting the regulars, making and serving refreshments, chatting to guests and getting involved in the activities. The role requires volunteers to be available on Thursdays between approximately 10.00am and 2.00pm (times may vary slightly).

The day centres take place weekly and offer local older people the opportunity to socialise with others, enjoy a two-course hot meal and take part in a variety of social activities. This is a great opportunity to join a friendly team and to help make a difference to lonely older people in the Oswestry area.

Applicants must be over the age of 18 years and a DBS check will be needed for this role (will be arranged for you).

Please contact Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin’s volunteer recruitment team on 01743 233 123 ext. 283 for further information and an application pack. Alternatively, visit www.ageukshropshireandtelford.org.uk or email volunteering@ageukstw.org.uk.

Garden for recovering children at RJAH

Work has commenced building a special community garden for paediatric patients at the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt (RJAH) Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen. Fundraising for the garden is still ongoing but, to date nearly £200,000 has been raised. This has allowed the landscaping and infrastructure along with a glass building for patients to undertake schoolwork or play sessions all year round, whatever the weather. However further funding is still required to include play equipment, plants, tools and extras to complete the garden.

“Visit Oswestry” was delighted to welcome The High Sheriff of Shropshire, Brian Welti to their new home in Oswestry Town Market on 2 October. Mr Welti was shown the wide range of tourist information and local crafts before visiting The Guildhall and viewing a presentation on Oswestry Borderland Tourism Ltd’s current activities and plans. A quick tour of the Market Hall and the town centre followed, with Mr Welti determined to return for a longer visit. As with all visitors, he also was keen to interact with our wonderful new mural.

The ‘Garden for Alice’ fundraising appeal aims to create a stunning outdoor garden for paediatric patients and their families at the hospital. Alice Ward, the dedicated children’s unit at the Oswestry-based hospital, provides specialist advice, diagnosis, and treatment for children between 0-18 years with bone, joint and muscular disorders.

Anyone wishing to donate to the project under the RJAH Charity, can do so via the Just Giving page: www.justgiving. com/campaign/gardenforalice

Oswestry GP receptionist retires after 37 years

An Oswestry GP receptionist has hung up the telephone for one last time following 37 years’ service at the same practice. Muriel Marston started at The Caxton Surgery as a temporary worker in June 1987 when the practice was based on Church Street. Starting in records and prescriptions, Muriel was then offered permanent employment by the much loved, late Dr Hughes as a typing coordinator in 1988.

The practice moved from Church Street to the new location on Oswald Road in 1993 where hundreds of paper files were moved by the team. Muriel, who celebrated her 75th birthday in July, later moved into a part-time Fund-Holding position before moving into a full-time role. She continued in her full-time role whilst bringing up her three children, Craig, Scott and Kirsty, and in 1998 returned to the front desk on records and appointments which she says she loved.

Following a retirement lunch and presentation of flowers and gifts from the doctors and the team,

James Bradbury, practice manager said, “Muriel has been a dedicated employee for 37 years and seen many changes through the practice and the NHS as a whole. She has gone from paper prescriptions and handwritten patient notes and files to the computerised system of today. Muriel has never been phased and embraced every change with enthusiasm and pride.

Alison Lee-Birch started work at the surgery as a school leaver and has worked with Muriel for 35 years.

“Fondly known as ‘Mu’ by so many of us, she has taught, supported and shown us all what true hard work and dedication looks like. We will miss Mu greatly as she begins her new much deserved chapter.”

Muriel said she has loved every day of her working life at The Caxton and will miss the team terribly. “My colleagues, past and present, have been my friends for 37 years and I will miss them all so much. Now is the time to support my family and enjoy a slower pace of life!” Muriel said.

Free Workshop about growing sports clubs

Oswestry Sports Forum is pleased to be hosting a free workshop for member and non- member club representatives on Monday 11 November, 7pm-9pm at Oswestry Rugby Club with the theme of “Growing Sports Clubs through Increased Volunteering and Funding”.

Many of our local sports clubs, particularly since covid, need help with this subject which is about improving knowledge about volunteering and funding. Volunteers are the “engine room” of our clubs, and without them they can’t function properly, whilst raising additional funding is a constant theme for helping kick start club initiatives to increase their activities.

This will be an interactive evening with the objective that every participant goes away with constructive ideas of how to improve their club’s ability to cope with these vital areas of management to help grow your club.

Key speakers: Amy Griffiths – Energize Shropshire -Empowering Communities Manager - will lead on the Volunteering and Fundraising agenda items, whilst Corrie Davies Project Development OfficerOswestry Town Council will cover local initiatives including Oswestry Youth Forum and Carole Moreton - Funding and Grants Team Lead -Community Resource will cover grant aid.

If you would like to attend or need more information, Oswestry Sports Forum members or non-member clubs from around Oswestry and beyond, please contact Clive Knight via clive.knight182@hotmail.co.uk or call 07964 615 858.

Get Ready For The 2024 Illuminated Tractor Run

After the success of the last year’s Choc’s Oswestry Illuminated Tractor Run and the raising of £12,000 for the Lingen Davies Cancer Charity based in Shrewsbury – local resident Mike Lade and the Whittington and Oswestry Young Farmers are doing it again.

Santa will be ready to greet everyone at the start and finish of the Illuminated Tractor Run at the Livestock Market, Shrewsbury Road in Oswestry from 3.30pm till 5pm on Saturday 14 December. So why not come along and get your photo taken with Santa and Choc’s tractor?

The run is being organised with the Young Farmers Club in memory of Will Roberts of Pennant Farm in Gobowen. Will, the much-loved son of Dave and Sue Roberts, was known by all as ‘Choc’ because of his love of chocolate. Sadly, Choc died from a brain tumor on 12 December 2022.

Dave Roberts, father of Choc and leading light in the Whittington and Oswestry Young Farmers says, “Its lovely to organise the second Oswestry Illuminated Tractor Run, in memory of our son Will (Choc) Roberts. He was a wellknown and well-loved young farmer in the community and also raised money for Lingen Davies Cancer Fund.

“They were a tremendous support to Will and us during his illness. It’s also to bring townspeople and surrounding villages together to see what else agriculture can do with the common goal to raise money for a wonderful local charity that touches so many lives.”

Will Jackson from Young Farmers says, “Raising awareness of the work young farmers do in the local community is important in these challenging times facing their future.”

At the market, you can walk around the tractors and talk to local farmers before and after the run. There will be hot drinks to purchase by the Young Farmers and a BBQ with hot food provided by the Lingen Davies Charity. You’ll see marshals and bucket collectors at the market, in the villages and towns to raise money for Lingen Davies, so please have cash ready on the night so you can support the run.

This year at 3pm, local kids can bring along their own illuminated ride on toy tractor, or any ride on toy, in their own tractor procession in the market hall of Oswestry Livestock Market.

Judging of the Best Illuminated Tractor will be done by Helen Morgan MP and Oswestry Mayor Councillor Mike Isherwood, before the start when they wave the procession off at 5pm. The tractors will make their way to West Felton, Ruyton XI Towns, Baschurch, Burlton,

Cockshut, Ellesmere (diverting through centre), Duddleston Heath, Ifton Heath, St Martins, Gobowen, Whittington, Oswestry and Morda, then return to the Livestock Market approximately 8.15pm. Check the map link on the Facebook page @oswestryilluminatedtractorrun to see the exact route and estimated arrival times.

Mike Lade commented, “We’re very grateful to Oswestry Market, Lingen Davies for the bucket collectors, Richard Hughes of Hughes Brothers for the supply of the lead vehicle, local farmers for their support and taking time out from all from their other farm work to wash and illuminate their tractors to make the run the spectacle it is. But most of all to our wonderful residents for coming out to cheer and their generosity.”

Karen Roberts, Volunteer Fundraiser at Lingen Davies Cancer Fund explains, “We’re so very grateful to everyone at Whittington and Oswestry YFC for their hard work bringing this event back for 2024. It was such a brilliant spectacle for everyone last year, and a fitting way for the community to support Dave and Sue and remember Will.

“We look forward to seeing people on their doorsteps, watching and cheering the tractors on. We’re also keen to hear from anyone who would like to support us by collecting donations in their town or village,” she added.

LOCAL HERO AWARDS

With autumn well and truly here, and winter feeling like it’s not so far off, it must be that time again and boy did it come around fast. The fifth year of the Oswestry Life Local Hero Awards are here, which means it’s time f or you to get involved again!

The awards are an opportunity to highlight those who have been giving it their all and working away, perhaps a little too quietly, but you feel deserve some extra special recognition for their hard work and behaviour.

A total of twelve awards are up for grabs, each one very kindly being sponsored by local businesses, charities or organisations. All you need to do is select your nominee and let us know why you decided to nominate them. Is there somebody in your local community who’s gone above and beyond? Perhaps an unsung hero, showing exemplary behaviour, dedication and compassion? Then take a minute to vote for them and give them the recognition they deserve.

With so many different awards to nominate for, be sure to get your vote(s) in. Voting is open as of now, you have until mid-January 2025 to have your say. With winners being revealed in our March 2025 issue.

Get your vote in now and show someone their hard work and efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Who’s your local unsung hero? Votes can be cast on the Oswestry Life Facebook page, or by visiting our website at www.oswestry.life

A big thank you to all of the sponsors who are involved with the awards, without you this wouldn’t be possible. It really goes to show how great of a community we live in.

St George’s Cross Planted for Veterans

Helen Morgan MP, Councillor Joyce Barrow and Jim Holland visited Woodhill Park Estate in North Shropshire to plant 1,000 trees with Carma, who support veterans through tree planting activities throughout the UK.

Hedges of dogwood, guelder rose and hawthorn were planted in the shape of a St George’s Cross in memory of the veterans who have served their country. The trees and the day were sponsored by Clearwater whose leadership team planted alongside the veterans.

Jim Holland and Iain Gurney created Carma to help employ UK veterans on the pathway to resettlement to plant trees in the UK.

Since co-founding Carma | B-Corp, they’ve planted thousands of trees every month.

“I’ve had the best life. Thirteen years in the Royal Navy was just the start,” says Jim. “We started by working with the Green Task Force, which provides pathways to employment for veterans and service leavers.”

A staggering 6% of serving and former personneland 17% of those that have been in a combat situation - suffer from some form of PTSD. Service leavers also face a lot of stress and anxiety when transitioning from service life. It’s been proven that getting veterans involved in Nature-Based Therapy (NBT) has a positive effect on their mental health.

In September, they planted 66,113 trees and created 660 workdays of employment across the globe.

“This cause means a lot to myself and my family,” said Helen Morgan MP for North Shropshire.

Feed your adventurous side with real survival skills

Bushcraft will teach you how to ‘be in nature’, giving you real survival skills. It will test your limits and teach you how to rely on your own capabilities in the wilderness.

Have you ever wondered if you could handle being self-sufficient in a natural outdoor environment? Would you know how to make simple tools out of wood if you needed to?

Imagine during the summer, being out camping for the night with a group of friends - it’s an adventure and worlds away from the day job. You hang your hammock off the cool ground and pitch a tarp overhead to keep it dry. You know exactly what you need to do to prep for a comfortable evening, and your friends are so impressed at how resourceful you are.

When they sign up for their first bushcraft course, most people are completely out of their comfort zone. But with local experts Woodland Roots, based on the Llanforda Estate in Oswestry, you’re carefully guided through every element of the course you choose, leaving with a list of accomplishments that will set you up for anything.

Burnout is a serious problem in the working world, so switching off from technology has a wealth of benefits – mental and physical. Spending time in nature has been scientifically proven to enhance mental well-being, reduce cortisol levels, and boost mood, and bushcraft will offer you an experience away from the distractions of everyday life, calming anxiety and reducing stress levels.

What is Woodland Roots?

Run by owner Tom Wright, who’s an experienced outdoor trekker, Bushcraft Instructor and Outdoor First Aider, the Oswestry expert

is keen to introduce the art of bushcraft as a beneficial life skill and stepping stone towards confidence and becoming more adaptable. With a corporate career behind him, Tom is all too familiar with the pressures of work and has personally experienced burnout. So, he understands first hand, the necessity for downtime away from stress and technology.

But being in nature isn’t just about getting muddy, it can be a transformative experience when you include learning new physical skills, building on your personal development and sense of adventure. When you’re led by a bushcraft expert such as Tom, you’re learning in a controlled, safe environment that still allows you to explore things such as knife cutting techniques and managing fire.

Courses for Individuals, Schools, Clubs & Businesses

Popular with teenage children, bushcraft allows the development of problem-solving skills, selfconfidence and offers opportunity for teamwork.

Whether you’re someone looking to improve your self-confidence or a business owner looking for teambuilding days, attending a bushcraft course is not only unique, but it’s also going to give you practical skills that translate into daily life.

Meet Tom on his stall at Oswestry Christmas Live, 6 December from 6pm.

But don’t just take our word for it…

“We learned how to make fire and build shelters in a beautiful, peaceful setting. Everything was hands-on and fun, and we left feeling more connected to nature. It was an awesome break from our daily routine, and we’re already excited to come back for more! If you’re looking for something relaxing but still adven turous, this is it.” – AK

Meet Oswestry Artists:

Amy Brown: Caught Doing a Doodle

It’s not often we hear of people being ‘discovered’ whilst doing their day jobs, but that’s exactly what happened to Amy. She was at work in Oswestry’s Morrisons, scribbling a doodle on scrap paper when Stephen Turner of Turner Fine Arts saw what she was drawing and started asking questions. It went from there.

Amy has a degenerative nerve condition meaning she won’t be mobile in the next 10 years. Speaking with her, her story has a message of acceptance, “We should appreciate everyone for who they are. It’s so wrong how people judge each other, so when someone looks at my art, I want them to find something beautiful in it that resonates with them.”

Being in such a rural area inspires Amy and she hopes people look at her work and appreciate it as much as the local area. Amy started painting in 2019 and has had her work on show in the Oswestry Framing Company. “I’m at peace when I paint, and I paint because I like doing it. I would love for my artwork to provide for my family, especially because of the condition I have.”

Amy actually sold her first piece recently (‘Seasons’), to a couple who hung it proudly in the entrance to their house, so their guests are always greeted with a vibrant view. Not knowing what to expect, Amy was invited round to see her art hanging in their home, which was an emotional moment knowing someone had invested and believed in her work.

But she has a sense of humour and Amy’s children help with her work. “I need real human poses for some of the pieces, so my kids like to help out and I take photos of them in action poses, directing them here, there and everywhere!”

It’s clear, Amy’s art is driven by people and the beauty in nature, but her message is heartfelt: why worry about the little things when we can appreciate what’s around us.

David Bannister: It’s In The Atmosphere

When you talk with David Bannister about his art, you begin to understand his deep vision. His recent works emphasise a ‘sense of place’ inviting viewers to connect personally and evoking unique emotional responses influenced by memories and colours.

“A lot of my work is to do with hope or having a sense of light breaking through the darkness,” explains David. “There’s a feeling something better is just around the corner, that the sun will burn through the grey sky and the wind and rain will pass. Some of my paintings carry a deeper, cataclysmic meaning—a feeling of an imminent event or its aftermath.”

Discussing his early influences, David recalls his time at Camberwell School of Art, where a pivotal mentor encouraged him to embrace his individuality through his drawings. The guidance and support he received there were instrumental in his growth as an artist.

When asked about audience reactions, he says, “At the Open Arts Trail in Bridgnorth, a woman stood for some time in front of one of my paintings, then broke into tears overwhelmed with emotion. I was taken aback at her response to the painting, but she expressed her

gratitude for the experience as it had moved her in a way that she couldn’t explain.”

Over the past thirty years, David has showcased his work throughout the UK, and at local venues Oswestry’s Willow Gallery and the Qube, which have been instrumental in his artistic journey. He now aims to broaden his reach with exhibitions across the country. His talent has caught the attention of Turner Fine Arts, which has offered him a spot in a touring exhibition in 2025, showcasing his work in UK galleries including the West Midlands, Oxfordshire and London.

Interested in owning a piece of his art? Visit www.turnerfinearts.com to view his paintings and inquire about commissions.

Next month, we catch up with Turner Fine Arts for more.

BOOK REVIEW

CHILDREN’S CHOICE

The Hare Who Wouldn’t Share

This beautifully illustrated rhyming story is all about a hare who just will not share. Will he ever learn his lesson? An engaging story perfect for reading with young children.

There was once a hare who did NOT like to share. What is the point of sharing? thinks the hare. The more I give away the less there is for ME.

But even the hare can appreciate the lovingly tended carrot patch created by the neighbouring rabbits. So, when a huge boar threatens to destroy the patch, will this hare come to see that giving things up for others means that you can gain so very much MORE of the most important things in life?

To get involved in selecting the Children’s Choice, sign up for one of Booka Bookshop’s Junior Book Clubs. Book Mice is for 7+ and meets on the 3rd Monday of every month. Another year has passed, a year in which we have seen several significant 80th anniversaries: end of the Battles of Monte Cassino, Battle of Kohima, Battle of Imphal, Battle of the Scheld and the end of Operation Market Garden.

To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landing in Normandy, the Oswestry RBL Branch in conjunction with Oswestry Town Council, held an 80th D-Day celebration at the Memorial Gates and within Cae Glas park. The event was a great success and a huge thank you to all who supported and attended the event.

This year’s Remembrance period will be another busy time for the Oswestry RBL Branch. Planning started back in the summer with the ordering of this year’s poppy appeal merchandise, which was then sorted, and delivered by our band of volunteers, to schools, businesses, pubs, restaurants and other participating locations within the Oswestry area. Plus, organising the selling of poppies and other poppy appeal merchandise at Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Stans supermarkets and in Red Square Oswestry.

The Branch will also be involved in the following Remembrance events which will be taking part in Oswestry over the Remembrance Weekend:

• Fri 8 Nov 24, 2pm, Oswestry Cemetery, a service will be held, followed by the laying of wooden poppy crosses on all war graves and the graves of all other known service personnel buried within Oswestry Cemetery.

• Sun 10 Nov 24, 10.30am-11.30am, Remembrance Day Parade, the Parade will form up at the Bailey Head, Oswestry and march to the Memorial Gates, for a service and Wreath laying.

• Mon 11 Nov 24, 10.50am-11.10am, Armistice Day, a short service, including 2 minutes silence will be held at the Memorial Gates.

The Oswestry RBL Branch would like to thank the people of Oswestry for their continued support to the poppy appeal and for attending their Remembrance activities.

The Voice from The Valley Returns

Wrexham-born and bred, James Humphreys is set to return to the area for a one-night-only performance in aid of hospice, Nightingale House. Originally from Wrexham, vocalist James Humphreys has been touring the world with his one-man show aptly named, ‘The Voice from The Valley’.

Speaking ahead of this performance, James said, “Nightingale House is a fantastic charity and one that I have always wanted to give back to. Being originally from Wrexham, I have been aware of the compassionate care that the angels at Nightingale House give, but more recently I have seen first-hand how outstanding they are.

“Both my father and grandfather were at Nightingale during their last moments and I could not praise the hospice enough for their approach to the care they gave.”

Nightingale House provides specialist palliative care for those with life-limiting illnesses. The hospice’s services are completely free of charge to patients and their families across the catchment area.

James added, “I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to take some time away from my international schedule and come home to perform, whilst raising much-needed funds for this very special charity.”

The concert will take place at The Holroyd Community

Sweet Chilli Meatballs

Tasty pork meatballs cooked with a simply great sweet but spiced sauce. Sweet chilli has a universal appeal because it’s tangy but not too hot, plus a lot of people will already have it stashed in the kitchen cupboard.

Ingred I ents

For the meatballs

• 500g minced pork

• 1 egg, lightly beaten

• 40g breadcrumbs

• ½ bunch of spring onions, sliced, plus more to serve

• Finely grated zest of 3 limes

• 1/2 tsp salt

• 1/2 tsp black pepper

• 1-2 tbsp vegetable or sunflower oil

• Sesame seeds, to serve

For the sauce

• 3 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped

• 15g root ginger, finely chopped

• 50ml water

• 3 tbsp soy sauce

• 6 tbsp sweet chilli sauce

• 3 tbsp tomato ketchup

method

1. Put the pork in a large mixing bowl with the egg, breadcrumbs, spring onions, lime zest, salt and black pepper. Get stuck in and mix until it’s well combined, then roll it into 12 equal-sized meatballs.

2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the meatballs over a medium-high heat until golden brown all over. Remove them from the pan, leaving the oil behind, and set aside.

3. Chuck in the garlic and ginger for the sauce and cook them for 30 seconds, then pour in the measured water, soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce and tomato ketchup. Stir well.

4. Get the meatballs back in the pan, turn to coat and bring to a simmer. Cook until the sauce is nice and sticky, and the meatballs are cooked through. (If you cut into a meatball, there should be no trace of pink. If there is, continue to cook for another couple of minutes, then test again.)

5. Scatter with spring onions and sesame seeds, then dish them up.

The Bailey Head is in Good Beer Guide

The Bailey Head pub in Oswestry has won a place in the prestigious CAMRA Good Beer Guide for the eighth year running.

The 4,500 pubs listed in the guide are independently selected by CAMRA volunteers around the country based on the quality of brews sold at the bar.

The Bailey Head has won a place in the guide every year since it was opened by husband and wife team Duncan Borrowman and Grace Goodlad in 2016. The pub is currently West Midlands CAMRA Regional Pub of the Year and Regional Cider Pub of the Year, the first pub to win both the accolades. Over the next couple of weeks, it will hear if it has progressed further in the national stages of both awards.

Grace Goodlad, landlady of The Bailey Head said, “It’s great to be included in the Good Beer Guide again and we know it brings many beer tourists to us and as a result, to

Oswestry. Duncan and I are absolutely delighted to be in the Guide again.”

Her husband Duncan Borrowman said, “It’s very appropriate that the West Midlands launch of the Good Beer Guide is happening at Shrewsbury Beer Festival this week, as we are one of the festival sponsors and gave our expertise and services cleaning all the beer lines for the bar handpulls.”

Zesty Tiramisu

The literal meaning of tiramisu in Italian is ‘pick me up’. Here, we serve up the iconic trifle with a twist. Because the traditional Italian cream filling can sometimes be tricky, this adaptation means that even novice cooks don’t have anything to worry about! method

Ingred I ents

For the coffee soak

• 3 tbsp instant coffee granules

• 2 tbsp golden caster sugar

• 300ml boiling water

• 4 tbsp Kahlua, or other coffee liqueur (optional)

For the tiramisu

• 500g mascarpone, or cream cheese

• 300ml double cream

• 120g golden caster sugar

• Finely grated zest and juice of 2 oranges, plus more zest to serve

• Finely grated zest and juice of 2 lemons

• 300g sponge fingers

• 2 tbsp cocoa powder

1. Prepare the coffee soak. Put the coffee granules and sugar into a jug or a bowl. Pour in the measured boiling water and stir until the coffee and sugar dissolve, then set aside to cool down. Once it’s cool, pour the coffee liqueur in, if using, then mix.

2. Put the mascarpone or cream cheese in a large mixing bowl with the cream, sugar, and the orange and lemon zest and juice. Use a whisk to beat until smooth. Use a tablespoon to take out 8 spoons of the cream and set aside, to serve with the finished dish.

3. Get a large dish, measuring about 30 × 20cm. Dip half the sponge fingers one at a time in the coffee soak for about 5 seconds, arranging them in the dish in a single layer as they are done.

4. Spoon in half the mascarpone cream and spread it evenly over the sponge fingers.

5. Now repeat with another layer of coffee-soaked sponge fingers, followed by the remaining mascarpone cream.

6. Cover the tiramisu and put it in the fridge until you are ready to serve. Before serving, dust the cocoa powder liberally all over.

7. Grate some orange zest over the tiramisu, then serve it with a bowl of the reserved cream on the side.

If you love a gin, you’ll be familiar with the wealth of flavours on the market. Coming into the Christmas period means warm smells reminiscent of home baked goodies and seasonal shopping. Who doesn’t love the thought of sipping from their favourite gin glass full of a flavoursome locally made gin, complete with fresh fruit and a complementing tonic on a Friday evening?

Expanding their range with exciting new flavours, including the limited-edition seasonal Christmas gin Frankincense and Myrrh, The Shropshire Distillery have new products that now welcome lovers of Vodka and liqueurs.

The new AFTER NOON range of liqueurs include coffee, Apple & Cherry and citrus grey tea flavours. But the range of gins still doesn’t disappoint with 7 now available through the online store, including Grapefruit & Hop, Cherry & Pink Peppercorn and the limited-edition Christmas Cranberry & Clementine.

Why customers return

“Our Classic Dry Gin remains our bestseller due to its smooth, balanced profile, making it a versatile favourite for gin lovers. Its blend of botanicals delivers a consistently great taste, whether enjoyed on its own or in cocktails,” says co-owner, Emma.

“We spent a fantastic afternoon learning how to make our own gin… Gareth and Emma share their wealth of knowledge and experience… making it fun, interesting and relaxed. I will be booking a cocktail making session next. Highly recommend The Shropshire Distillery and all they do.”

Suzanne R – Sept 2024

News

In addition to their tours, tasting and Gin school, The Shropshire Distillery launched a new interactive cocktail masterclass, adding another spirit-based experiences for customers. The brand has received recognition for their experiences and been awarded Trip Advisor travellers choice for a second year running.  Their experiences are highly rated for their fun, yet educational and hands-on approach to distillation.

One review on Tripadvisor says: Great evening with tasty gins, a tour of the distillery and a talk about how Emma and Gareth began the Shropshire gin journey. After coming previously for a gin experience here for my mum’s birthday, it was great to do a tasting session to see the new gins available and see how they’re made. The spiced gin with ginger beer was amazing!

Park Hall Forest School

“The children we teach are not only capable and confident, but they’re polite and good company too.” “

Discover the magic of Park Hall Forest School, where childhood unfolds as it should - wild, free, and full of wonder. Set within the heart of Park Hall Countryside Experience, this special learning environment offers children the chance to roam, play, and explore the natural world in every season. Whether it’s Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, you’ll find children climbing trees, building dens, and creating mud pies. They nap in hammocks, collect woodland treasures, tend the vegetable garden, and maybe even meet a fairy or two.

At Park Hall, time is our greatest gift. Without formal timetables, children are free to follow their curiosity whether it’s asking teachers for help with a project or diving into imaginative role-play, building, or experimenting with the natural elements. Forest School Leader Laura shares, “Sometimes, we feel redundant. The children are so deeply engaged, playing independently, that we just stand back and smile, knowing everything we’ve taught has led to this moment.”

The outdoor environment builds resilience and independence. Children become physically strong, resourceful problem solvers, and skilled communicators, delighting in the hands-on learning that comes from nature. As Teacher Lara adds, “The children we teach are not only capable and confident, but they’re polite and good company too.” Laura chimes in with a smile, “We’re big into embracing the weather! Rain or shine, adventure awaits.” Wrapped up in their Forest School ‘uniforms’ of waterproofs and warm hats, children help to make snacks on the campfire, sip hot chocolate, and gather for stories! There’s always something magical to experience, even when the skies are grey.

Park Hall Forest School provides home-schooling support, flexi-schooling, and holiday clubs for children aged 3-8. Join us for our Open Morning on Tuesday 12 November, 10.30am-12. Follow us on social media for updates and enroll your child in Pre-School, Holiday Clubs, or Flexi-Schooling.

Stagecoach is an established theatre school in Oswestry and Shrewsbury. It has been running for 25 years in the heart of Oswestry in the new venue ‘Open Space Studios’ at Oswestry Library, where children aged from 4 - 18 years come through the doors to ignite their passion for the arts. They learn Singing, Dance and Drama, building confidence and courage for life.

Lisa is celebrating 10 years as the Principal. She has a real passion for theatre and loves everything Stagecoach has to offer. From a performing background, she has worked extensively in theatres in the UK and around the world as a Professional Singer/Dancer/Actress. It seemed a natural progression to move on to teach and then take over the helm owning five thriving theatre schools in Shropshire.

Stagecoach would like children to feel brave, happy and safe in a friendly family environment. Their skilled professional

teachers want nothing more, but to make sure everyone has fun and always enjoys their time with the Stagecoach family.

Lisa loves her job and says ‘Here’s to another 10 years or more watching our next generation grow into well-rounded talented individuals’.

“Sunshine

Did you get a tan this summer? Probably not in this country! If you did then thank your melanocytes – those little cells that sit in our skin and give it its colour. They respond and protect us from ultraviolet radiation by producing melanin – a word derived from the Greek for dark. Like most of our amazing body functions we sort of take all this for granted – unless you got sunburnt of course!

Now, there are various types of melanin and their mixtures give us all the different hair and skin colours. Some people have very little melanin – about 1 in 10,000 people have albinism, from the Latin this time for white. In the Hopi Native American tribe, it is 1 in 200! However about 1 in every 100 of us will have vitiligo – another Latin derivation for calf! Yes, the animal! The one that has white patches! In these people the body’s immune system attacks the melanocytes giving them areas, often symmetrical, of pale or white skin. There is sometimes an underlying reason

for this happening but usually this is a benign condition and can be inherited. Sadly, there is very little effective treatment and often camouflage is the best that can be offered.

There are many skin pigment disorders and any mole that appears to be changing needs medical attention but there is one other, more common, curious one. It’s called pityriasis versicolor. This time the Greeks claiming the first word for scaliness and then the Romans the words for colour change. Patients get areas of pale skin in darker skinned individuals and slightly pigmented ones in less dark skins. This is easily treated and is caused by an amazingly named yeast: Mallessezia furfur. This time named after its French discoverer.

Melanin is also found in your brain and a few other pockets of your body. Quite what it is doing there is not known. Melanin is still a bit of a mystery.

This november the Meadows osteopath Clinic is 10 years old so i thought i’d share my top ten tips for feeling your best!

1. Sleep - prioritise this over everything for mental and physical healing. Try the Headspace app for meditations if you struggle to drop off.

2. Morning sunshine - studies show people who get adequate natural daylight (especially before noon) tend to sleep better at night. A morning walk counts but volunteering with an outdoors charity can help too. Try Shropshire Wildlife Trust 01743 284280 or Whittington Castle Preservation Trust 01691 662500 info@whittingtoncastle.co.uk.

3. Move every day – 5 minutes of squats as you unload the dishwasher or a couple extra times up and down stairs can make a difference, or try The Soma Space at the Memorial Hall for sessions combining strength training and exercise with mental health (trauma informed) education to assist you in building, enhancing and maintaining all round mind-and-body wellbeing, www.thesoma.space.

4. Stretch - Before you get out of bed curl into a ball to stretch your spine then stretch out long to loosen up.

5. Hydrate – most of us don’t drink enough water, it’s essential for brain function if you feel foggy, muscle action if you feel achy and helps you digest your food.

6. Smile – listen to a podcast, head to a comedy night at www.thebuttermarket.co.uk in Shrewsbury or laugh with a friend - it’s a great release of endorphins.

7. Play the Glad Game – list at least 5 things you’re grateful for every night before bed.

8. Stop smoking – from back pain to menstrual cramps smoking can increase pain levels by constricting the blood vessels and impairing healing and muscle function.

9. Stargaze - Shropshire Astronomical Society have monthly meetings and public lectures to guide you: www.shropshire-astro.uk

10. Wild swimming – my favourite! Try Alderford Lake Whitchurch for a safe cold dipping experience and you can jump in the Cosy Cask Sauna after!

Have a happy healthy month.

Time Slips By

It’s November already (or at least the November issue!) and as another year draws to a close, it’s natural to reflect on the things we didn’t get around to—especially when it comes to our health. How many times have you told yourself, “I’ll start next week,” or “Next year will be different”? It’s a familiar cycle: we set intentions to take better care of ourselves, but somehow, time slips away, and those good intentions fade.

You’re not alone. Many of us have busy lives, careers, families, and other demands that leave little time for self-care. But here’s the truth—there will never be a “perfect time” to prioritise your health. If you’re waiting for life to slow down or for motivation to strike, you might find yourself stuck in the same place at the end of 2025, looking back on yet another year of missed opportunities.

The good news? You don’t need to wait for January to make changes. Start small, right now. Movement, even in its simplest form, can have profound effects on your wellbeing. The key is consistency and a plan that fits your life—not a crash course or a quick fix, but steady, thoughtful progress.

Reflect on how your body feels today. Are you experiencing aches and pains? Feeling tired or sluggish? Do you look back at previous years wishing you’d done something? These are signs that your body is asking for help, for care, for a chance to feel stronger and more energised.

The best way to ensure you won’t be repeating the same story next year is to take action now. My coaching offers a methodical, proven approach to help you move better, feel better, and get results that last. 2025 doesn’t have to be a repeat of this year. It can be the year where everything changes.

So, what will your story be when you look back a year from now? Take the first step towards a healthier you—book a consultation today and make 2024 the year you prioritised your health for the years to come.

10 Years for The Meadows Osteopath Clinic

Since qualifying in 2002, Claire Arnold has worked across Shropshire and Mid Wales Borders, within a number of clinics (Health Focus Welshpool, The Osteopathic Health Centre Chester, The Osteopathic Clinic Gresford and The Natural Health Centre Shrewsbury) gaining a reputation for compassionate, empathic Osteopathic care.

After the birth of her daughter 11 years ago, she decided to start her own venture closer to home in Oswestry and opened The Meadows Osteopath Clinic. Specialising in the treatment of women’s health, pregnancy, babies and children, Claire has built a thriving business over the years with the support of loyal patients, local businesses, local support groups (Oswestry Breastfeeding Support Group) and networking groups.

In the early days the clinic was based at The Whole Life Centre on Cabin Lane, where patients could enjoy a post treatment drink and cake at Café Life. Baby Bird Café was the home for Bizmums the local networking group and her eye-catching logo was designed by Branding By G. As the practice has grown, reception services have been outsourced and marketing advice sought from Oswestry Life Magazine and Martin & Jones Marketing both of whom have been invaluable to the clinics’ success.

Looking to the future, Claire hopes to combine her passion for the outdoors and in particular wild swimming, by supporting people to get back to optimum health by facilitating local swims, walks and the Couch to 5k running program

When the Covid pandemic hit, the clinic paused as the Whole Life centre closed and parenting her then two small children became a priority. However, by January 2021 as lockdowns lifted, a new clinic venue came about as Claire moved into the Oswestry Herbarium and business has boomed ever since.

2020 also brought a new focus for the clinic after Claire completed a Post graduate Diploma in Lifestyle Medicine and delivered a series of lectures in Oswestry Library called ‘Building Blocks to Better Health’. A condensed

version of the lectures has been delivered to the Qube Social Group and local WIs over the last four years inspiring people to take charge of their own health through better sleep, nutrition, movement and stress management.

During 2021, the opportunity popped up to sponsor the local Rainbow Hot Air Balloon Team whom the family continue to support as crew when the weather allows! You may have seen Claire in her trademark bright leggings at Oswestry Balloon Carnival this summer with Elevate Balloon Flights and the Rainbow Team as they led a highly successful event in Cae Glas Park.

Looking to the future, Claire hopes to combine her passion for the outdoors and in particular wild swimming, by supporting people to get back to optimum health by facilitating local swims, walks and the Couch to 5k running program so watch this space.

10 years is a momentous achievement for any business especially with tough times for many recently, so to say thank you for all the support, patients and businesses have been invited to a lunchtime tea party to celebrate.

Shropshire Fostering Agency Celebrates 10 Years

A Shropshire fostering organisation celebrated its tenth year of incorporation in October. Shrewsbury based New Chapters Fostercare (NCF) was established by directors Craig Walton, Martin George and Rosie Cavalot in 2014, when the organisation they were working for decided to close its Shropshire offices and relocate.

NCF began its journey with five founding local fostering households. Today the company maintains its goal of supporting families located throughout Shropshire and Telford, by supporting 40 foster carers and 47 children with the aim of adding six of each per year.

Craig Walton, strategic director says, “Our shared value base and focus on what’s right for the child rather than how to make more money has helped us through some challenging times. There are fewer and fewer foster carers coming forward to offer stable home lives to an increasing number of young people, some with complex needs. For example, exacerbated by the rise in abuse, child sexual exploitation, County Lines and domestic violence, the demand for foster placements

has increased nearly threefold, in the area since the covid pandemic, all while the squeeze on local authority budgets creates additional external pressures.”

However, NCF is looking to the future with plans to offer core support services in-house. Through its traumainformed approach, children who have suffered harrowing experiences early in life such as abuse, loss and rejection are helped to feel safe going into and through their foster family relationships.

Craig Walton continued, “It’s a privilege for us to change children’s lives and we know there are so many more amazing people out there with the commitment and resilience to help a vulnerable child recover from their trauma, so we would urge them to make contact. They could not only start a new chapter in their lives but also provide a much needed one for a vulnerable child.”

League of Friendship awaits: Join RJAH’s volunteering family

For countless organisations volunteers are the backbone of their efforts – and at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) it’s no exception.

The League of Friends is calling upon members of the community to join their volunteer family to support a wide variety of roles across the organisation. With over 200 volunteers currently helping, those who join will be working alongside a wonderful, dedicated group of people who make a huge difference to patients, staff and relatives on a daily basis.

Whether it’s offering a compassionate ear to patients on the wards or a friendly smile at the coffee shop, the Friends volunteers help make RJAH more than just a hospital – they create a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone.

Victoria Sugden, Charity Director for the hospital Friends, said, “There is a broad array of roles available, from helping out in our retail outlets to providing support at fundraising events.

“Volunteers across the Trust are a major part of the fabric of RJAH and provide a vital service that is truly appreciated by staff, patients and relatives alike.”

Beryl Angel has been a member of the League of Friends volunteer family since 2009, taking on a number of roles across RJAH – from Helpdesk hero to Shop Trolley super star. She said, “I’m tremendously proud to be a part of the Friends volunteering family and hope to continue for many years to come.

I would urge anyone who feels they can spare a few hours a week to do voluntary work – the rewards are huge, and your time is so appreciated.

“I would urge anyone who feels they can spare a few hours a week to do voluntary work – the rewards are huge, and your time is so appreciated.”

The charity also has a network of fundraising branches based in the towns and villages of Shropshire, Mid and North Wales, meaning there is an opportunity to volunteer outside of the hospital within a community setting.

These fundraising branches consist of committees of like-minded individuals who share a common passion for fundraising and supporting RJAH.

Elaine Tinsley is Secretary of Border Branch – which spans across Chirk, Weston Rhyn, St. Martins, Gobowen, Ellesmere and surrounding areas.

Elaine has been a member since 2011. She said, “Being part of the Border Branch is incredibly rewarding. I love knowing that every bit of time and effort we put in directly benefits our much-loved local hospital.

“It’s not just about raising money, it’s about being part of something bigger, connecting with people, and making a real difference. I would encourage anyone interested to join up today.”

If you are interested in volunteering at RJAH please visit: www.friendsrjah.org.uk/volunteer

Locals feature in TV Pilot

Exclusive Interview

Filming has just wrapped for a TV pilot involving locally based actors and some famous faces. Shropshirebased, Rocking Horse Media have had a tumultuous 3 years of trying to complete the pilot, but they’ve finally succeeded, with it now being sent to TV networks across the country, seeking commission.

Oswestry Life had an exclusive interview with lead actress, Órla Jones to find out about this exciting production, which focuses on raising awareness of conditions like dementia, and PTSD, as well as shining a light on autism and neurodivergence.

Titled Henry House and set in a local care home, the comedy drama has been made about the SEND community and has a largely neurodiverse cast and crew. Filming has even taken place around Oswestry, namely Ro-Loz Bar and Nightclub, the Orthopaedic Hospital and nearby beauty spot, Iscoyd Park.

Actress Órla plays Izzy Orchard, the new receptionist in the care home, who’s fun-loving, caring, ditsy and outspoken – the perfect recipe for an endearing character. “Izzy always tries to see the silver lining and never gets bogged down, even in the most desperate situations. We filmed some serious, emotional moments surrounding dementia but, from the research we did with local care homes, we were advised it was important we also show a lighter side to the condition, such as when Izzy mistakes a dementia resident for a member of staff because the resident genuinely believes they are staff! That’s one of my favourite scenes.”

“After spending so long on the set of a fictional care home, visiting real care homes in the area was

eye-opening. Speaking with staff and residents has made me realise how much the story of Henry House matters. Meeting these people has touched my heart,” explains Órla.

The pilot isn’t without some big TV names: Mark Lewis Jones (Outlander), Annette Badland (Ted Lasso), Mark Benton (Waterloo Road), Ian McNeice (Doc Martin), Ian Puleston-Davies (Coronation Street), Liam Fox (Emmerdale), Colin Baker (Doctor Who) and Peter Purves (Blue Peter). The music is even being created by Sam Watts, who composed for the award winning BBC series, The Traitors and a number of Doctor Who-related titles.

Touching on the chance to act alongside well-known faces, Órla says it was overwhelming. “It was hard to believe that, as an up-andcoming actress myself, I could go from one audition in Oswestry to suddenly being on set with the likes of Annette Badland, who I’ve grown up watching. It was a real privilege

to work with our all-star cast and the day with Mark Benton was just brilliant. I was a bit awe struck to share a scene with him and it was a long day, but I was inspired by his professionalism to keep going until it was right.”

Filming on the pilot wrapped three years to the day that Órla auditioned for the role of Izzy at Open Space Studios in Oswestry. Last year, the whole pilot was thrown into doubt when Órla’s co-star Peter Purves fell and broke his wrist, halting filming with just three weeks to go.

A crowdfunding campaign was set up, alongside private investment and fundraising events, including two BounceBack concerts where Órla actually sang live. All these efforts combined to eventually save the pilot.

Asking Órla if she has advice for any aspiring actors in Oswestry, she says, “My advice is don’t stop trying. Check your local community for performance opportunities and try and get work experience with local production companies, like Rocking Horse Media. Seeing first-hand the amount of young people who benefitted from work experience on the set of Henry House, I couldn’t recommend doing that enough.”

To keep an eye on the TV pilot’s progress, follow Rocking Horse Media on Facebook, Instagram and X. Alternatively e-mail info@ rockinghorsemedia.co.uk for more information about how you can get involved.

Not Just for Tourists

We are not just here for tourists! That’s the message from Karen, Ann, Kate and Diane at Oswestry Tourist Information Centre.

After three months settling into its new home in Oswestry indoor market, Oswestry Tourist Information Centre and the team are looking forward to their first Christmas there. “It will be so good to be part of the Christmas festivities with all the other traders leading up to Christmas itself”, says Karen. “There’s such a friendly atmosphere here and we are loving our new location.”

Kate went on to say, “It will be an all-new experience for us, and we are excited that, for the first time, we will be selling wine, beer and spirits from some of Visit Oswestry member businesses. We have always featured lovely crafts and gifts from local businesses but now we will be offering Stonehouse and Henstone gins and whiskies.”

“Do call in and say hello when you are in town on market days,” invited Diane and Ann. “The centre is open 10am to 3pm every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. We can tell you all about the latest events for Christmas too, as well as helping you choose some very special Christmas gifts. We have beautiful leather handbags, unique pottery made in Oswestry and some very special Christmassy items.”

So, do remember – The Tourist Information Centre isn’t just for tourists, everyone is welcome.

Marketing firm sets up creative and communications hub in Oswestry

Shropshire firm Martin & Jones Marketing has moved into a new building in the centre of Oswestry as part of its expansion plans.

The move to the new offices in Arthur Street in the centre of Oswestry is a joint project with local web design business Artifice Creative owned by Ken Harrison.

They have also welcomed photographer and videographer Katy Yates to the new premises where she has set up her own studio. They are now looking for one more business to move into the remaining office to complete the new creative and communications hub for the town.

“We are all Oswestry based communication and creative businesses, so it makes sense for us all to be under one roof. It’s also a great way to showcase Oswestry’s creative talents,” said Ruth Martin director of Martin & Jones Marketing.

The company, which has just celebrated its fifth birthday, previously had offices in Oswestry Memorial Hall. But the team has grown over the past year and a bigger office was required.

“We needed more space to be able to accommodate all the team. Our new office in Arthur Street – opposite Oswestry library – is big enough to take Martin & Jones

Marketing as well as Artifice Creative and leaves us room for expansion.

“In the meantime, we are delighted that Katy has joined us and we have space for one other creative or communication business as well,” said Ruth.

Martin & Jones Marketing was set up in 2019 by mother and daughter team, Ruth Martin and Janet Jones. It has since grown to a team of five and works with a network of Oswestry’s creative freelancers to support a UK-wide client base.

“We are really delighted to have grown and developed over the last five years from our start-up office in a bedroom to our own creative and communication hub,” said Ruth.

MBO Safety Services as your CITB Training Provider

CITB has introduced a local Employer Networks scheme to streamline access to CITB-funded training for businesses. You can claim up to 70% of training costs, meaning you only pay the difference!

How It Works

This scheme provides a new way for CITB-registered businesses to receive training funds without the hassle of forms or claims. CITB organises the training, removing the need for grant and funding paperwork. This initiative allows CITB to work closely with us as the Training Provider MBO Safety Services, strengthening relationships with our customers. It aligns perfectly with our expertise in training provision, addressing skills shortages, and supporting businesses.

What’s the Catch?

There isn’t one! Local CITB-registered businesses have already joined the network, influencing how CITB funds are spent. These networks are set to expand nationwide by the end of 2024 and are transforming CITB training funding.

Want to Get Involved?

Simply get in touch with us, at info@mbo.ltd or call 08000 842 297 quoting CITB-ENS24. We’ll connect you to your local CITB Network Engagement Adviser to discuss the employer referral and funding process. Eligibility: All CITB-registered businesses, up to date with levy payments or exempt, can participate and benefit from the funding. There’s no cost to join!

What are the benefits of you as a business joining?

• Businesses decide how funds are used and on what.

• Businesses determine the contribution of funds towards each training need.

• It’s a business-led approach to funding training and skills delivered locally.

• No need to claim for training using the CITB grants scheme.

Flexible Approach: Employer Networks offer a more flexible funding approach than current CITB routes:

• Training isn’t limited to a financial cap.

• Training doesn’t need pre-approval.

• Networks can quickly respond to changing local skill needs.

How

support charities like Hope House and Ty Gobaith

The “light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel” is how one parent described the impact Hope House children’s hospices had on his family. But like all charities, Hope House faces a constant challenge to raise enough money to keep providing vital support to children with life-threatening conditions and their families.

Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors is highlighting how people can support charities through a gift in their will, and Aimee Johnson, a wills and probate specialist, discusses Hope House and Ty Gobaith on the firm’s Legal Lounge podcast.

In the special episode, Aimee chats with Bev Bradley, the legacy fundraiser at Hope House and Ty Gobaith, about the wonderful support provided by the charity.

“People often think a children’s hospice will be a sad place but it’s actually a very happy place, full of the sounds of children playing and laughing,” Bev says. “We want to help local families make the most of every moment, and as one dad said, Hope House was the light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel.

“The funding we receive from the Government would only last for about 10 weeks and we would then have to shut the doors, so we can only do what we do thanks to the support of our fundraisers.

“Currently, we need to raise £9.6 million a year and we are proud to say that from every pound we raise as a charity, 84 pence goes directly to supporting life threatened children in our care, which is not the case for every charity.”

One of the best ways of supporting charities like Hope House and Ty Gobaith is to leave a gift in your will, as Aimee explains, “You can decide to leave a set amount to charity in your will, but that may not be worth as much as you think once you take into account inflation and it does not reflect any changes to your estate.

“Another option is to leave a percentage of your estate. Say, for example, you leave Hope House 1% of your estate, that will reflect 1% of your estate when you pass away rather than when you wrote your will which means Hope House could receive more than you first thought.

“Also, if you leave 10% or more of your estate to charity then the rate of Inheritance Tax drops from 40% to 36%.”

You can listen to the Legal Lounge podcast by searching for it on any streaming platform, or visit the Lanyon Bowdler website at www.lblaw.co.uk/knowledge.

CAN DOGS EAT CINNAMON?

With festivities fast approaching, you may be indulging in goodies containing CINNAMON. Delicious for humans, but what about our pets?

Benefits of Cinnamon for Dogs

Cinnamon comes in two varieties, Ceylon and Cassia.  Ceylon cinnamon is light in colour and sweet in taste. It’s also expensive and difficult to find.

Cassia cinnamon is what you find in every grocery store. Cheaper, darker in colour and with a stronger flavour. But because of the coumarin in Cassia cinnamon, it’s only ok to feed to dogs in small amounts. Ceylon cinnamon is the safer choice for your dog.

1. Balances Blood Sugar Levels

If your dog has obesity related diabetes then you should add cinnamon to the diet. Adding 1/8 tsp per 6kg of body weight to the diet each day is a standard and safe amount. This will help regulate blood sugar levels.

2. Arthritis Relief

Cinnamon is especially beneficial for senior dogs. Antiinflammatory properties in cinnamon can help manage joint pain and reduce swelling.

How Much Cinnamon?

It’s recommended by many to mix 1/2 tsp of cinnamon in 1 tbsp of honey for a medium-sized dog.

Don’t feed cinnamon to pregnant dogs. This is because eating cinnamon can have a stimulating effect on the uterus.

Do not feed cinnamon sticks!

Introducing cinnamon to your dog’s meals should be done cautiously and sparingly.

Sprinkle on food once a week if not diabetic.

Homemade baked dog treats.

What about Nutmeg?

Nutmeg is often paired with cinnamon in recipes, but it should be avoided in your dog’s diet due to its content of myristicin. This compound poses a toxic risk to canines.

Myristicin ingestion can lead to serious health problems for your dog, including confusion, an elevated heart rate, dry mouth, lethargy, hallucinatory experiences, a spike in blood pressure, stomach pain, and potentially seizures. Avoid at all costs.

If your pet does accidently get hold of more than 1tsp of nutmeg, please seek veterinarian advice immediately.

Considering new carpets? Our guide will help you work out the best options for a practical and stylish new look. Home

Made from sustainable plant fibres, this tactile woven carpet is a versatile option for living rooms, halls and stairs. Sisal Kayal Pamba carpet, from £72 per m2, www.alternativeflooring.com.

For warmth and softness underfoot, nothing beats wall-to-wall carpet. It’s highly versatile, and has the practical benefits of sound absorption and insulation against draughts and heat loss.

First things first

Where are you planning to fit your carpet? Carpet for a front hall needs to be dramatically more hard-wearing than one for a guest bedroom. If you’re planning to use the same carpet throughout, choose one that’s tough enough for the most demanding area. Consider the likelihood of spills, stains or other accidents.

The nitty gritty

Look at the standard descriptions: ranging from light to extra heavy domestic use. You might want to ask about the weight, a factor in durability, and its tog rating (like a duvet), which tells you how insulative it is.

Another consideration is the material. Natural wool is sustainable, warm, soft, durable, naturally flameretardant and resilient to compression. The downsides? It’s expensive, less stain-resistant than synthetics, and susceptible to moths.

Nylon carpets resist stains and are highly durable, but less soft. Polyester is stain resistant, easy to clean and feels similar to wool, but flattens. Polypropylene wears well, doesn’t fade and offers value-for-money. To enhance performance, give a particular feel or reduce the price, wool is often blended with synthetic fibres. Finally, there are plant-based carpets – usually sisal, jute, seagrass or coir.

Selecting a style

Visiting a store allows you to see rolls with large areas of carpet, while some websites offer the opportunity to upload your own photos and picture the carpet in situ. Take samples home where you can see them in your own environment and light.

Carpet textures

Loop: The pile tufts are looped through the backing and left uncut for a smooth or slightly firm feel. The longer the loops, the more luxurious the carpet; the shorter they are, the more hard-wearing the floorcovering. Watch out for pet claws.

Berber: A loop-pile carpet named after the indigenous people of North Africa, whose hand-woven carpets have a distinctive knot. Modern Berbers are usually neutral but flecked, and highly durable.

Cord: The loops are pulled tight against the backing, giving a low pile.

Cut-loop: Loops are cut fairly short for a soft yet durable and versatile option.

Velvet/plush: A sheared, short pile with a smooth, luxurious finish but less durable.

Saxony: A deeper pile made of densely packed, twisted piles that stand up straight. Feeling soft and luxurious, they are popular for bedrooms, but show footprints and vacuum marks.

Shag: An extra-long cut-loop pile – watch out for high heels.

Twist: With the yarn tightly twisted, this type of cut-pile carpet is popular for its durability.

Friezé: Dense and soft, with a longer loop and thick, curly pile – but may be hard to clean.

Woven: Woven on a loom for a hard-wearing surface. The two traditional types are Axminster and Wilton.

Leopard print

Leopard Print is a glamorous, exotic and edgy pattern, that carries a maximalist punch. It can have the tendency to overwhelm a space, so balancing it out and taking care with it is key if you want to avoid a tacky look. Often considered a neutral by those who love it, the natural brown and black colour way is the most classic way to work it into your home. Accessories and small textile pieces like cushions and lampshades, are safe ways to inject a bit of the wild side for those with more conservative tastes. Large sofa’s fully covered in a smaller scale print, and wallpapers in modern colour ways will cater for those who love a bold and maximalist environment. Leopard print is versatile enough to sit quite nicely in all interior schemes.

Oswestry is ‘Blooming’ with Awards

On Monday 30 September, Natalie Bainbridge, chair of Oswestry In Bloom, welcomed a full house to The Memorial Hall for the annual award presentation. There were over 100 individual awards in 15 categories, with almost 80 being presented on the night. There were also special awards for individuals and groups. The categories ranged from Best Hanging Basket to Best Large Back Garden. Local community groups and young people were also recognised.

Oswestry In Bloom is run by a committee of volunteers and supported by Oswestry Town Council. For the first time, this year each category was sponsored by a local business, and a representative from each was invited to present the certificates and trophies.

Natalie opened the evening saying, “We are here tonight to celebrate not only the beauty and creativity that our community brings but also the dedication and hard work that fuels our shared vision of a greener, more vibrant Oswestry. Today’s awards are to celebrate the hard work and creativity of all who have participated. Our gardens and floral displays do more than just brighten our streets, they foster a sense of pride, enrich our environment, and bring us all closer together. It’s through these acts of community spirit and environmental stewardship that we create a more welcoming and beautiful place to live.”

Introduced in 2023, the award for

Young Gardener was hotly contested and host for the evening, ex BBC Radio Shropshire presenter, James Bond gave details of the wonderful work that they have been doing.

The presentation evening came hot on the heels of the announcement that Oswestry had picked up Gold and Best Large Town in The Heart of England In Bloom Awards. This means that in 2025 Oswestry will be representing the West Midlands as Large Town in Britain In Bloom, an accolade to the hard work of the In Bloom volunteers and the Cae Glas Park Team.

Committee member and Services and Admin Officer at Oswestry Town Council, Louise Humphreys said, “It was lovely to be part of last night’s Oswestry In Bloom Presentation with businesses, residents and community groups all receiving awards for their hard work in making Oswestry a ‘Blooming’ good place to live, work and visit.  Special thanks to all the sponsors, judges and especially the volunteers who have all helped Oswestry win Best Large Town in the Heart of England region for the third year running.  We are looking forward to working with

RETIREMENT PLANNING MADE EASY

CAN YOU RETIRE COMFORTABLY?

If you’re thinking about retiring in the next few years, you’re probably already planning the things you’d like to do. From spending time with your grandchildren and starting a new hobby to taking that special holiday you’ve always dreamed of, it’s a time to focus on the things that you enjoy most. You might, given how rocky the financial landscape has been recently, also be wondering if the date you had in mind is still realistic.

Craig Roberts, co-founder of Belgrave Wincham Independent Financial Planners, says: “We receive enquiries from so many people asking this. The good news is that with careful planning it’s still possible to look forward to a comfortable retirement.”

Here he shares three points to consider:

Financing your retirement

Think about your expenditure now, versus what you’ll need in retirement. You’ll most likely have paid off your mortgage, but what about bills, home improvements or new cars? Take into account any travelling you plan to do or hobbies as well. Draw up a list with an approximate cost for each outgoing.

Revenue sources

Consider where your money will come from in your retirement. It might be a state pension, a private pension, a workplace pension or a mix of these. You may also have additional revenue streams like investments, company shares or a rental income. Look into each one and work out what income they’ll offer.

Consider the future

In 2015 the pension freedoms legislation enabled people aged 55+ years to access their defined contribution pension more flexibly. This was welcome news for many but does mean that extra care should be taken to ensure your pension funds last as long as you need them to.

Get advice

Retirement planning can be complex and if you’re unsure about any aspect it’s worth making an appointment to see a regulated independent financial planner. Offering impartial advice, they’re there to guide you through the process with confidence and ease.

Q&A

with GHP Legal’s

Jessica Wright

What are the different types of Will you can have?

Q: We have just had our first child and want to make our Wills. However, we have discovered it isn’t as straightforward as we thought it would be. We have heard people mention single Wills, mirror Wills and Trust Wills. Please can you explain the differences.

A: This is refreshing to hear as younger people often think Wills are something only elderly people need to have. In reality, most people should have a Will and the process of instructing a professional to prepare your Will is more straightforward than people think.

A Will is a legal document setting out who will inherit your assets, and who will deal with your affairs, after you die. You can also appoint legal guardians in your Will, in the event that you die leaving behind minor children.

Mirrored Wills are no different from single Wills. Every Will that we prepare (with the exception of joint Wills which are extremely uncommon) is a stand-alone document. Mirrored Wills are prepared when two people want Wills on the same terms, for example a couple who wish to leave everything to the survivor of them and then to their children when they have both died. Each of those two people can change their Will at any time without knowledge or consent of the other.

A Will can also be used to create a Trust after your death. There are various types of Trust and each is more suited to certain circumstances than others. A Trust is created when assets are given to somebody (Trustees) to look after on behalf of another person (Beneficiaries). The most common type of Will Trusts are Bare Trusts, Life Interest Trusts and Discretionary Trusts. Whether or not these are appropriate to include in your Will depends on your circumstances, and it is therefore essential that you seek the advice of a solicitor as they are best placed to advise you on the most suitable type of Will for you.
