It’s the Christmas issue, which means it’s our final flurry before 2024 closes its doors.
The one thing I love about this time of year are the shop windows, with all the sparkle, reds and greens and fun winter scenes set up – enticing you in to spoil your loved ones with a gift. I don’t know about you, but watching my town’s Christmas lights being turned on and visiting the seasonal markets definitely signify the Christmas period for me.
Here at the magazine, the team would like to thank all the advertisers, contributors and readers for your support this year.
Have a wonderful Christmas and happy new year!

Effortless Glam: Your Guide to Festive Hair Styles with OWN IT
The festive season is officially here, and with it comes a whirlwind of shopping trips, family gatherings, work parties, and celebrations with friends. We know you want to look your best for every moment, but who has the time for multiple styles in one day? That’s where these versatile, easy-to-achieve looks come in. Whether you’re heading out to finish the Christmas shopping, catching up with friends over a festive lunch, or glamming up for a night of New Year’s celebrations, these styles have you covered from morning to midnight!
Soft Waves
Add a touch of glamour to shorter hair with soft waves— perfect for an effortlessly chic look that lasts from day to night. Soft waves not only create movement and volume but are also incredibly easy to achieve. Start with dry hair and apply a bit of heat protectant. Use a curling wand to wave small sections, leaving the ends slightly straighter for that natural, undone finish.
Next, add texturizing spray to your roots and midlengths, then brush through with a bristle brush for an airy, voluminous look. Finish with a light mist of shine spray and flexible hairspray to keep your waves in place. This versatile style is perfect for everything from casual Christmas shopping to brunch with the girls—and with a quick refresh of shine spray, it transforms into an elegant, understated look ideal for evening celebrations.
Perfect elegant Christmas updo
Transform long, flat hair into beautiful, voluminous waves! Start by curling your hair into loose waves using a heated curling iron, don’t worry about perfecting every curl, once you’ve curled your hair, add a spritz of texturizing spray at the roots and give your hair a gentle shake to boost volume, next, take two small sections from the front and loosely twist them back toward the crown of your head. Secure the twists with a pretty festive accessory or a sparkly clip for an extra touch of Christmas glamour.
This look says “Christmas ready” with style and sophistication, making it ideal for everything from cozy family gatherings to lively festive parties.
Bouncy Bob
Give your bob a sexy, stylish upgrade with a voluminous straight bob—a timeless choice that’s both polished and effortlessly chic. To achieve this look, start by blowdrying your hair with a round brush, focusing on lifting the roots to create maximum volume. The key here is to really work the roots for that fabulous bounce!
Once your hair is dry, run a straightener through the

mid-lengths and ends, making sure to turn the ends under for a soft, polished finish. Remember to keep the roots lifted for that enviable volume throughout.
This will create that fabulous, full-bodied look that’s perfect for the festive season. it’s also incredibly easy to elevate for an evening out. For an extra festive touch, pair your voluminous bob with statement earrings that sparkle in the holiday lights. With this look, you’ll be ready to shine at any festive occasion!
Treat Yourself Right
Don’t forget to gift your hair some nourishment this Christmas with a self-love treatment! Start by gently brushing your hair to ensure the bristles touch your scalp, which helps remove dead skin and loose hair. Next, wash your hair with OWN IT Glow Shampoo and Conditioner for that perfect cleanse and hydration. Once your hair is clean, treat yourself to our Coconut and Avocado Mask for a deep conditioning boost. Wrap your hair up in the Fluffy Treatment Turban and leave the mask on for 20 minutes to allow all those nourishing ingredients to work their magic. After the time is up, simply rinse out the mask and dry your hair as usual.
This pampering routine not only revitalizes your hair but also gives you a moment of relaxation during the busy Christmas season. You deserve it!

Home interiors perfectly designed for you
If you’re looking for handmade, bespoke, fine quality products for your home that are made to last but feel a little daunted by the idea of designing the interior on your own, you’re not alone. By having guidance, reassurance and design expertise to hand, the whole experience of creating your perfect surroundings will be a complete joy.
Draycott & Charles, owned by Victoria Millington is an interior design company who are passionate about creating high quality, beautiful and characterful bespoke interiors that stand the test of time. Within their design studio at Criddon Hall situated just outside of Bridgnorth in South Shropshire, they display a wide range of fabrics, wallpapers, paint, lighting, flooring, trimmings and upholstery.
Whether a client is looking to redesign their home from scratch, requiring a full interior design service or would like new curtains, blinds, advice on paint colours or even to reupholster a much loved piece of antique furniture, Draycott & Charles are ready to help.
Sometimes it can be difficult to choose a fabric from a small swatch, especially when there are so many options (Draycott & Charles offer more than 300). So, as part of the process, Victoria and her team include interior design home visits, where they bring a selection of fabrics to help customers visualise the scheme in their space.
Large drapes of fabrics hang on display in the studio that have been hand selected from a range of trusted suppliers. From large or small patterned, colourful or plain, traditional or contemporary, the range of luxury fabrics is vast, allowing you to let your creative mind wander.

“We enjoy the process of guiding customers to find their perfect fabric to lead or compliment their room scheme. We feel it’s important to have an overall plan for your room or home and we offer help and guidance to create a harmonious feel and flow throughout,” Victoria explains.
For homeowners looking for high quality and interior design tailored to their requirements, the meticulous attention to detail and eye for colour and balance in the home is all part of the one-to-one service Draycott & Charles offers.
Whether you need a scheme that combines the old with the new, layers colour and textures with quality materials, antiques, handcrafted or bespoke pieces, Victoria makes sure your home interior is beautiful and in keeping with both your vision and surroundings.
Draycott & Charles clients come back year after year: “I have worked with Victoria on various projects in our home from bedrooms, bathrooms, drawing room and kitchen over the past 3 years. Victoria’s eye for colour and detail and her knowledge of fabrics is exceptional. The level of service is unparalleled; she takes the time to understand personal tastes and preferences in order to guide towards the desired result. I always look forward to finding a reason to seek her advice.”
“We were extremely impressed with the quality and wide range of choice of fabric when we were looking for blinds, cushions and seating for a new kitchen, bathroom and snug. This quality of fabric choice was equally matched and surpassed by the service and advice that we received from Victoria and her colleagues when placing our orders - absolutely first class. But what has impressed us most is the quality of the after sales service from Victoria as we adapted to our new home furnishings. We have further rooms to redecorate and will have no hesitation going back to Victoria and we would also have no hesitation in recommending Draycott & Charles.”

“Going to the Chapel & We’re Gonna Get Married”
When you’re searching for the perfect dress for your wedding day, you want a boutique you can walk into and feel instantly comfortable and relaxed. It’s a big deal trying to find your dress and having the friendly support of a boutique owner as well as friends and family can make the shopping experience a dream.
The Dress Bridal Boutique launched October 2024, offering a special experience from the moment you book the appointment to the moment you find ‘the dress’.
Brides should feel heard when wedding dress shopping, so owner Katrina’s mission is to always deliver more than the bride ever expected. “Many come to their appointments not knowing what they want, but by asking just a few questions, I always know which direction we need to go in. Appointments (typically between 1.5 to 2 hours) are never rushed as you should enjoy the whole experience. We always recommend a maximum of four guests at the appointment because it’s critical the bride can focus on what they want and not feel overwhelmed with lots of opinions.”
The Dress Bridal Boutique has a perfect position in the centre of Oswestry and only a minute’s walk from Central Car Park. It seems the availability of 4 Old Chapel Court came just at the right time for Katrina as it offers a private area above the shop floor where brides can change and try on dresses. If stairs are an issue, Katrina can accommodate.
You’ll only find beautiful, stylish designer dresses in the boutique and never the bland. Samples in store are Élysée, Morilee, Martina Liana and Enzoani and cover sizes 8-16. All the dresses are listed on the website, so you can choose your top 5 favourites to try before you attend your appointment. With Katrina on hand to help you, she understands what will suit your body type and can help you consider some styles you might have missed.
Katrina explains, “When I was 16 I worked in a bridal

shop, and in all honesty, I think I spent more time trying on the dresses and dreaming of my ‘special day’ than actually doing any work. But I had the best time and that feeling never left me! When it came to my own wedding, I felt overwhelmed by all the dresses and felt scared to even touch them. So, I eventually decided to design my own dress, and I’ve always felt I missed the magic of the experience.
“My dream now is to make sure brides always feel comfortable, confident and happy when they leave their appointment.”

Christmas Party makeuP ideas
Whether you prefer a subtle glow or a bold statement, these trends offer something for everyone.
As the festive season approaches, Christmas parties offer the perfect opportunity to experiment with glamorous and creative makeup looks. Winter 2024 brings exciting trends that invite us to embrace bold lip colours, playful eyeshadow textures and a nostalgic nod to the 1980s with blush application techniques. Whether you’re aiming for a subtle glow or a statement finish, here are some makeup ideas to help you sparkle at your festive gatherings.
Radiant Skin: The Glowing Base
Healthy, glowing skin remains at the forefront of makeup trends. Achieving this timeless look starts with a wellprepped base. After your skincare routine, apply a hydrating primer to create a smooth canvas. Opt for a lightweight, dewy or serum foundation or a tinted moisturiser to enhance your natural complexion - you may need a shade lighter in the winter than you use during the summer months. Highlight the high points of your face with a liquid or cream highlighter. My top tip is to mix a tiny bit of liquid highlighter in with your foundation for an extra bit of radiance! To finish, a setting spray with a luminous finish will lock in the glow and keep your makeup looking fresh all night.
Metallic Eyes: Shimmer and Shine

Statement Lips: Bold and Beautiful
While the eyes take on a sparkling theme, lips this season are all about making a statement. Bold lip colours are trending, with rich reds, deep berries, and vibrant pinks taking centre stage. Matte and satin finishes are both popular choices, depending on your preference.
For a perfect pout, start by exfoliating your lips and applying a hydrating lip balm. Line your lips with a matching lip liner to define the shape and prevent feathering. Apply your chosen lipstick with precision and add a touch of gloss to the centre of your lips for added dimension.
Blushing Beauty: The Draped Blush Look
Blush has taken on a new role in 2024 with the draping technique. This method, reminiscent of the 1980s, involves applying blush to the temples and blending down towards the cheeks, creating a lifted and sculpted effect. Choose blush shades in warm peaches, soft pinks, or even a hint of coral for a fresh, rosy glow that complements the winter vibe.
To achieve this look, use a fluffy brush to apply the blush, starting at the temples and sweeping it down along the cheekbones. Blend well to avoid harsh lines and ensure a seamless transition. This technique not only adds warmth to your complexion but also enhances your facial structure, offering a youthful and radiant finish. You’ll look like you’re fresh from a snowball fight before you can say ‘mince pie’.
Brows on Point: Natural and Defined
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/241114104407-6be31f80fe8b5e617c6e9a5233dfa7dd/v1/1bc676936c2c824445102ee61edc3fb6.jpeg)
This season, eyeshadows that shimmer and shine are all the rage. Metallics and glitter are making a huge comeback, adding some Christmas sparkle to your eye makeup. Experiment with bold metallic shades like silver, gold, or copper for a dramatic look. Coppers and bronzes look amazing on most eye colours so are a good option if you’re not sure what suits you. For a softer, more ethereal appearance, choose pastel shimmers in lilac, mint, or peach. Pair your shimmering lids with a crisp winged eyeliner or a smudged-out kohl for added drama. Don’t forget to finish with volumising mascara or a set of false lashes to make your eyes pop.
Well-groomed, full, fluffy brows remain a key trend, with a focus on them looking natural yet defined. Begin by brushing your brows upward with a spoolie and fill in any sparse areas with a brow pencil or powder that matches your natural brow colour. A clear or tinted brow gel can help set the hairs in place, maintaining the fluffy texture throughout the party.
Remember, makeup is about enhancing your natural beauty and having fun, so don’t be afraid to experiment and step out of your comfort zone. For lessons or appointments please get in touch and I’ll be happy to help you create your perfect look.

Our clients say…
“I recently purchased a David Bannister painting from Turner Fine Arts and am thrilled to bits with it. I was invited to view David’s work at Steve and Hayley’s lovely home. They were terrific hosts and made me feel very welcome
and relaxed with absolutely no pressure, a thoroughly enjoyable evening. They even offered for me to hang the painting in my home for a few days to get a ‘feel’ for it prior to purchase and I fell in love with it, it is just perfect for my home. The whole experience with Turner Fine Arts was very special and appreciated.”
Julia - Whittington
“Dawn and I were privileged to be able to attend an exclusive art showing at Turner Fine Arts. We were warmly welcomed by Stephen and Hayley into their residence which houses the galley. During the viewing we were delighted to be able to meet the artists David Bannister and Shaun Gagg. We are now the lucky owners of an incredible painting created by David called “Meditation Au bord de L’eau”, and a sculpture by Shaun “Nuts about you”, a special piece that is admired by many. We were taken by many pieces on show by other talented artists and are looking forward to our next viewing.”

The love of Christmas and its history never dies. But in the 21st century, technology, manufacturing and choice have subtly changed some of the ways we follow these traditions.
Trees
Christmas trees came over from Germany towards the end of the 1700s and were popularised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Trees would be decorated with real candles, strings of glass beads, candies and handmade ornaments of paper, wax, silver wire and blown glass.

And now…? It’s still very much part of Christmas, but many find buying and disposing of a fresh tree a hassle. The real thing is by far the most environmentally friendly option, but if you already have an artificial tree, keep it and keep using it.
Cards
The first recorded Christmas card was sent way back in 1611 by German physician Michael Maier to King James I of England and his son, the Prince of Wales.

However, exchanging cards at Christmas didn’t get going for another 200 years! Enter Sir Henry Cole –a prominent civil servant who introduced the Penny Post system.

And now…? With electronic communication – email, messaging and video calls – the sending of cards has significantly declined. However, sending a tangible card to someone you don’t regularly speak with is a much more personal way of keeping in touch.

The rich, fruity pudding originated in the 14th century as a preChristmas fasting meal made from porridge, meat and raisins, with the consistency of soup. Ingredients such as flour and eggs were added over the years until the recipe evolved into the dessert we know today.
Small silver “charms” were once added to the mixture: a silver coin to bring wealth to the recipient, a silver thimble for thrift, a wishbone for luck and an anchor to symbolise “safe harbour”.
And now…? Profiterole towers, chocolate bombes and trifle are trendy after-dinner choices as not everybody likes the fruit pudding.
Turkey

Although turkeys aren’t native to the UK, they have been eaten in Britain for hundreds of years and Henry VIII is said to have enjoyed this meat on Christmas day. Charles Dickens’ book, A Christmas Carol, features Scrooge asking a poor homeless child to help him buy Bob Cratchit ‘the prize turkey’ hanging in the window of the butcher’s shop.

And now…? Turkey is less common in the UK than you might expect. A recent YouGov poll found that only half of respondents typically ate turkey on Christmas day - that’s fewer than the number who ate sprouts!
The trivial benefits in kind (BiK) exemption applies to small non-cash benefits like a bottle of wine or a bouquet of flowers given occasionally to employees. By taking advantage of the exemption, employers can simplify the treatment of BiKs whilst at the same time offering a tax efficient way to give small gifts to employees.
Although the benefit is defined as ‘trivial’, employers should remember that this offers an excellent opportunity to give small rewards and incentives to employees. The key condition being that the gifts are not provided as a reward for services performed or as part of the employees’ duties. Gifts for personal milestones, such as the birth of a child or a marriage, as well as other gestures of goodwill would usually qualify.
Employers benefit as these trivial BiKs do not need to be included in PAYE settlement agreements or reported on P11D forms. Additionally, they are exempt from Class 1A National Insurance contributions.
To qualify for the tax exemption, trivial BiKs must:
• Not be cash or a cash-voucher (something that can be directly changed to cash);
• Cost £50 or less;
• Not be part of a salary sacrifice or other contractual arrangement;
• Not be given in recognition of services performed by the employee as part of their employment, or in anticipation of such services.
For directors or office-holders of close companies and their families, there is an annual cap of £300. Each gift must still adhere to the £50 limit, but this allows up to £300 of non-cash benefits per person each year. This cap does not apply to employees. If the £50 limit is exceeded for any gift, the entire value becomes taxable.

On the lead up to Christmas, it is worth thinking about gifting staff £50 vouchers. Selecting a voucher which can be spent at a variety of shops makes this ‘trivial benefit’ a ‘significant benefit’ – stretching the value through the power of choice.

Kate Lawson is a private client solicitor with Lanyon Bowdler, which has offices across Shropshire, as well as in Herefordshire and North Wales. Here, she explains how she helps people with their future financial planning
regarding wills and Lasting Powers of Attorneyand gives some tips about the hidden gems to seek out in Shropshire.
What’s your favourite thing about living and working in Shropshire?
Having lived in Shropshire all of my life (apart from my uni days), I love that Shropshire is rural yet centrally placed to be able to easily travel to the Welsh or English coast, into the cities of Chester, Liverpool, Manchester or Birmingham or to hop onto the train to London – it’s the best of all worlds!
How would you describe your job?
Our People, Your Team
Different every day! I get to meet many people from many walks of life generally at a time where they are grieving, vulnerable or considering their own mortality. Being able to offer advice or reassurance, or to sometimes confirm their concerns allowing them to focus on grieving or focus on today rather than the what ifs is incredibly rewarding.

Where is your favourite place to visit at Christmas in Shropshire?
I adore Attingham Park in December, the Christmas tree displays are just stunning.
What are your favourite festive events that take place in Shropshire?
The Christmas lights switch-on in Oswestry has always been a favourite – it marks the start of the Christmas period for me and my family and has been even more exciting the past couple of years as my daughter has performed with her dance school. This year I have also booked a surprise trip to Theatre Severn to watch Elf The Musical by Get Your Wigle On which I’m sure will be a huge hit!
Do you know of any hidden gems which more people should know about?
I very recently discovered Moor Farm Shop and Café in Baschurch, having had an excellent cooked breakfast and plan to return soon as the cakes looked delicious!
The Riverbank in Shrewsbury is outstanding and such a lovely atmosphere and the café at Whittington Castle and The Boathouse, Ellesmere, are firm family favourites.
Moving away from food, Booka in Oswestry and Turtledoves in Shrewsbury are great for gifts and we love to buy our Christmas tree from Pentreclawdd Farm, Oswestry.
Describe your perfect Christmas Day
Cuddles in bed with the children watching them open their stockings, a yummy breakfast then off to my parents’ house to meet with the rest of the family for a Buck’s fizz or two whilst watching the children open even more presents, before a fantastic Christmas dinner followed by watching the latest Julia Donaldson adaptation.

I received some advice from a colleague in the first few days of my training contract some years ago now, which was that no matter who you are or what qualifications you have, you can learn something from every one of your colleagues from the practising manager to the office junior. This is advice I still pass onto the firm’s trainees who I work with today.

This whole retro inspired look is one of unashamed excessive joy in all things glitzy, and glamorous, and when better to indulge than at Christmas. From it’s 50’s inspired nostalgia with cutesy animals, niche jewel toned baubles, and tinsel galore, it sums up Christmases of the past and appeals to both those with retro and eclectic tastes. A bit of festive Kitsch can’t go amiss if only to make sure we aren’t taking ourselves too seriously. So, hang up those disco balls, set up that outdoor reindeer and overdo the tinsel this year!

Foodie Gifts for Christmas
A Shropshire business that creates luxury recipe boxes has Christmas gift-giving sewn up with their festive options. The Host’s Pantry is run by local husband and wife team, Jessica and Scott Woodland. Their locally hand packed recipe boxes contain premium produce and detailed hosting guides to make hosting at home a luxury experience.
“If you’re stuck for ideas, then why not give the gift of quality food and drink with The Host’s Pantry,” said Jessica Woodland.
“Our recipe boxes can be purchased as gift vouchers, so the lucky recipient can choose when to receive them. We all have those hard-to-buy-for loved ones, but who wouldn’t enjoy receiving the gift of a fabulous meal to cook in the comfort of their home? Or you can order one of our seasonal recipe boxes to take the hassle out of hosting during the festive season.
“You can also order gift vouchers or hampers in just a couple of clicks on our website. For instance, you could gift a cheese board for someone you’re staying with or a beer and snack hamper for the hard to buy for ale lover in your life.”
This year, The Host’s Pantry added an online food hall to their website, which means produce, wine, beer, deli items and hampers are available to buy online. The business is based just north of Shrewsbury in Marchamley Wood where they also run their sister business. The Shropshire Hamper Company brings together food and drink products made by independent businesses, artisans, and producers.
Products featured come from the local area wherever possible, such as the Ludlow Nut Company, Shropshire Salumi, Tanners Wine Merchants, Rowton Vineyard, Shropshire Cheese Nibbles and Iron & Fire. The business is geared towards corporate gift giving, and they can fulfil orders from 10 to 10,000+ hampers at a time.
Jessica adds, “With both businesses, we handpick the finest food and drink products to deliver a quality collection of goods. Across the two businesses, we can offer both fresh and ambient gifts that are perfect for Christmas.”

Recipe extracted from A Very Vegan Christmas by Sam Dixon, published by Hamlyn, priced £16.99, with photography by Charlotte Nott-Macaire.
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 160°C / fan 140°C / gas mark 3. Grease a deep 20cm round cake tin and line with non-stick baking paper.
2. Melt the vegan butter or coconut oil in a saucepan along with the brown sugar, citrus zest and juice, and rum or brandy (if using). Bring to a boil and simmer for 2 minutes, then remove from the heat.
3. Add the dried fruit and candied peel to a large bowl, pour over the vegan butter/coconut oil mixture, and stir well.
4. Whisk together the flour, ground almonds, baking powder, salt and spices in a separate bowl. Mix the apple purée into the dried fruit mixture, then fold in the flour mixture until just combined.
5. Pour the cake batter into the lined tin, smooth the surface with a spatula and bake for 1½ hours. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool completely in the tin. Once cooled, pierce holes all over the top of the cake with a skewer, drizzle over 2 tbsp rum or brandy, and let it soak in. Make sure the surface is fully dry before decorating.
6. When you are ready to decorate, whisk together the icing sugar, aquafaba and lemon juice in a large bowl until you have a stiff and glossy icing. Cover with clingfilm until needed.
7. Heat the apricot jam in a small pan, then brush over the top and sides of the cake.
8. Roll out the marzipan into a rough circle about 2.5mm thick on a work surface lightly dusted with icing sugar. Lay it over the cake and gently smooth it onto the top and down around the sides, so that there is no air trapped inside. Neaten by smoothing over with the flat of your palm or the rolling pin and trim away any excess.
9. Spread over the icing in swoops and flicks to look like snow using a spatula or the back of a spoon. Let the icing set completely for a few hours before cutting. Decorate with frosted redcurrants and rosemary sprigs (if liked).

Slow cooked Golden Turkey legs
Making use of leftover turkey can be quite a challenge. This dish is perfect for feeding a crowd – and the slow cooking takes the rich, dark meat of the turkey legs to another level.

• 2 large onions, peeled and diced

• 2 bay leaves
• 500ml Madeira wine
• 1.5 litres chicken or turkey stock
• 150g smoked bacon lardons

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 130°C / fan 110°C / gas mark ½.
2. Place 40g of the butter and 2 tbsp of the oil into a large, lidded, ovenproof pan and heat gently. Season the turkey drumsticks and, in batches, place them skin-side down in the pan. Cook slowly until the skin starts to crisp and turn golden brown. Turn the turkey drumsticks over and repeat on the other side. Remove from the pan and set aside.
3. Add the onion and garlic to the pan and cook slowly over low heat until they start to go slightly brown. Remove any excess fat from the pan and return the drumsticks to the pan, together with the thyme and bay leaves. Add the Madeira wine, bring to the boil and reduce until it starts to glaze the meat. Add 1 litre of stock to the pan and bring to the boil again.
4. Place a tight-fitting lid on the pan and cook in the preheated oven for around 2½-3 hours until the meat starts to come away from the bone.
5. Meanwhile, fry the lardons in the remaining oil. Remove from the pan and then fry the mushrooms in the same pan until lightly coloured. Return the lardons to the pan and remove from the heat.
6. Now, make the sauce: place the remaining stock in a pan and boil until it reduces to approximately 200ml. Add the double cream and bring to the boil again. Stir in the mustard and remove from the heat.
7. When cooked, remove the turkey from the oven. Take the legs out of the pan and set aside. Pass the braising liquid from the turkey legs through a fine sieve. Place the liquid in a pan with the remaining butter and reduce the liquid down to a light glaze. Add the truffle paste and set aside.
8. To serve, place the turkey legs on a serving dish, cover in the truffle liquid, and top with the mushrooms, lardons and roasted Chantenay carrots. Serve with the mustard sauce separately.

A children’s book with A mAgicAl messAge
By Jessica Mills
I’m excited to announce the release of my latest book, Wendy Wanderlust Wakes Up in Brick Lane. This is the second in the Wendy Wanderlust series, where Wendy’s magical backpack transports her on unexpected adventures, all with a focus on sustainability and teaching children how they can help the planet.
I grew up in Shropshire and then spent twelve years travelling the world, working as a nanny, and also for an adventure travel B-Corp. My experiences sparked a passion for sustainability and child development, and I wanted to combine those into something meaningful. That’s how the Wendy Wanderlust series came to life – fun, adventurous stories that also teach children important lessons about the environment.
The first book, Wendy Wanderlust Wakes Up in Cavo Greco, saw Wendy travelling to Cyprus to help protect the local environment. It’s been amazing to see the response and how children have connected with Wendy’s journey, learning about wildlife conservation along the way.
In Wendy Wanderlust Wakes Up in Brick Lane, when Wendy’s magic backpack whisks her away, she’s surprised to find herself still in her home city of London. Soon, Wendy realises she hasn’t been transported to a different place – she’s travelled back in time! Wendy wakes up in Brick Lane in 1971, where she meets a local rockstar who shows her how cool it is to shop in second-hand stores and introduces her to the importance of sustainable fashion.
When I moved to London several years ago, I became aware of fast fashion and overconsumption, but I also discovered the joy of charity shops, especially around the Brick Lane area. Since then, I’ve made the switch to buying almost exclusively second-hand clothing, but with the consumption of fast fashion only growing, it felt like an important message to share with young readers. Wendy’s adventure brings this topic to life in a way that’s fun and easy for kids to understand.
This book’s themes feel especially important with Christmas around the corner, when consumerism

often reaches its peak. With so much focus on buying new things, it’s a great time to introduce children to the idea that second-hand shopping and more mindful choices are not only fun but important for the planet. The book also comes with activities and games, making it interactive and educational for children who want to learn more about sustainability.
I’m also thrilled to be partnering with Little Hands Design for this book launch. Little Hands Design is a charity that teaches climate change education through fashion and textiles, offering practical, hands-on classes for children and adults. They’re committed to promoting sustainable fashion and provide classes at the London School of Mosaic as well as in local schools. To support their work, we’re donating 25% of the profits from books sold at their workshops.
We’ll also be hosting Christmas workshops with Little Hands Design, where children can get creative and learn about sustainable fashion in a hands-on way. You can find details of the workshops and other events on our social media – make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook (@_wendy_ wanderlust).
There’s plenty more to come for Wendy. Readers from all over the world have enjoyed her first two adventures, and I’m already working on future stories. My goal is to keep exploring important topics with Wendy, helping children engage with the world in a fun and informative way.
If you’ve got ideas for topics you’d like Wendy to cover next, or if you would like to collaborate, I’d love to hear from you. You can reach me at jess@wendy-wanderlust.com or visit the website at www.wendy-wanderlust.com.

The Hare Who Wouldn’t Share by Steve Small
Chosen by Eryn, aged 10, a member of Book Worms Book Club
This beautifully illustrated rhyming story is all about a hare who just will not share. Will he ever learn his lesson? An engaging story perfect for reading with young children
There was once a hare who did NOT like to share. What is the point of sharing? thinks the hare. The more I give away the less there is for ME.
But even the hare can appreciate the lovingly tended carrot patch created by the neighbouring rabbits. So, when a huge boar threatens to destroy the patch, will this hare come to see that giving things up for others means that you can gain so very much MORE of the most important things in life?

The Snowman Code by Simon Stephenson
Chosen by Thomas, age 8, Book Worms
A great book about a girl and a snowman meeting each other and defeating the girl’s bullies then fining the snowman’s lost love.
I liked that it was funny, so it had jokes like ‘snowmen have nine lives’, ‘snowmen migrate south in winter’. The snowman code is a certain rule that all snowmen must follow.
My favourite bit was when all the snowmen have a big party to celebrate the start of spring. I also liked how the snowmen came to life once you spoke to them six times.

The 12 days of Christmas –the medical version
apologies to Frederick Austin 1909
Harry did not enjoy his English lessons. Grammar was not his strong point and what was all this fuss about William Shakespeare? He wrote in a weird sort of rhyming English and, anyway, he’d been dead for 400 years! And poetry – not his thing. So, when Ms Edwards, his English teacher, asked them to write a poem he told her he was non-plussed, bamboozled, discombobulated even. She quite liked his words but explained he still had to give it a go.
His first few attempts drew a complete blank – rhyming words was not his strong point. “Not all poetry has to rhyme,” said his mother over tea. “Songs are a sort of poetry too I think, and you like those.” That set him thinking – particularly after a choir had been singing Xmas stuff on a TV show. I’ll rewrite one of their songs, he thought. He’d read that Xmas was not a healthy time of year so thought a medical tone would work.
“I want you to imagine the tune of the 12 days of Christmas,” he said to his Mum. “I’ve reduced it to the last verse where all 12 gifts are mentioned - here we go then: on the 12th day of Christmas my body gave to me:
12 coughs and sneezes
11 runny noses
10 rows with family
9 injuries dancing
8 forgotten tablets
7 indigestions
6 drinks too many
5 days of headache
4 snoring friends
3 sleepless nights
2 winter jabs and an allergy from the Christmas tree!
“What do you think Mum?” asked Harry. His mother was stifling a giggle but couldn’t contain it and burst out laughing. “I’m not sure
it’s what Ms Edwards had in mind., but I like it so why not?” She tittered as she cleared the breakfast plates.
He printed it all out in its full format and handed it in. At the next English lesson, he was a bit nervous. Everyone else seemed to have written a poem. Was he in trouble? Ms Edwards approached his chair. She was looking quite stern. “Harry” she started. But Harry was too nervous to let her continue. “Songs are a sort of poetry…...my Mum said so anyway….and I’m no good at rhyming stuff……I did try.” Ms Edwards put her finger to her lips “Shh” she said and gave him his work, this time with a smile: unheard of from her! He read 10 out of 10 on his work!
“I thought it was a good idea,” said his Dad. “And you’ve made us all think about a healthier Christmas. We’ll get in some cold and cough stuff for Xmas, although I’m not sure what we can do about runny noses. If we all wash our hands with warm water and soap and use tissues when we sneeze that we then bin then maybe we won’t get 12 of them! Perhaps we should avoid the more contentious issues and try to be helpful and nice to each other so we can have a row-free holiday. We’ll avoid the Hokey Cokey this year! I’m going to make sure I order enough of my tablets from the doctor and don’t run out Christmas week. Perhaps we should all try and pace our food consumption this year to avoid the Christmas “stuffing” indigestion and get a few antacids in! And I suppose that goes for the alcohol too!
A bit of exercise over the festive period might be good as well – you know like ladies dancing or lords a-leaping!” “You haven’t finished the 12 days,” said Harry. “What about snoring, jabs and allergies? “Well,” interrupted his Mum, “your grandma and grandpa have had their flu and covid jabs and the tree is an artificial one this year. That only leaves my snoring and 11 out of 12 will have to do.”

North Shropshire College reveals new, £1 million refurbishment, providing state of the art facilities for students and staff.
North Shropshire College has recently undergone refurbishment to improve the facilities for students and staff at the college. The atrium and refectory have been completely transformed to allow students to have a central hub that is modern and inspiring, making it an inviting space for socialising and relaxing between lessons. With a mixture of booths, long benches or private spaces, there is something to suit everyone. Students can also use this space to study and complete group projects together as the area has excellent technological fixtures allowing students to work on their laptops and other devices.
This hub is located right next to the food counter where students and staff are now able to purchase Costa Coffee along with a range of hot and cold drinks, snacks and meals. The new refectory gives an exciting insight as to what to expect for the next stage of the refurbishment of Scholars Restaurant where catering and hospitality students studying at North Shropshire College will be able to operate services and accommodate their guests in a modern, stylish surrounding.
The refurbishment has also introduced a new health and fitness suite to the college, which is expected to be very popular amongst students and staff, allowing the facilities for them to stay fit and improve their health and wellbeing. This will be a great opportunity for students to focus their spare time on achieving goals and working towards self-
improvement, providing people with facilities that they might not be able to access otherwise.
The health and fitness suite is set to have state-of-the-art equipment including a wide range of strength and conditioning equipment, cardiovascular equipment and functional fitness equipment to meet the needs of all. It will be a fantastic asset for the sports and public service students to enhance their studies. These courses are heavily focused upon understanding the body, including the anatomy and physiology of the body, healthy exercising and nutritional practices amongst many other elements of fitness. The gym will be highly effective for physical demonstrations throughout the different modules as well as promoting the student’s physical preparation for their career aspirations.
These upgraded areas come after a recent £2million investment into the improvement of Salon QB, new plumbing and electrical workshops, and a science lab. This investment has been hugely successful and is reflected in the quality of the student’s work and passion they put into perfecting their skills. At North Shropshire College, we are committed to providing our student’s with contemporary facilities to allow them to practice and improve their skills in real life settings and be as prepared for the workplace as possible. We continue to look for ways to make our students experience as valuable as it can be throughout their time at North Shropshire College and we are excited to see our students thriving in these newly refurbished spaces.

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition affecting millions of people worldwide. Although it’s a well-known disease, understanding the differences between each type and recognising their characteristics are crucial for spotting the symptoms early on.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/241114104407-6be31f80fe8b5e617c6e9a5233dfa7dd/v1/bdb9d4e9b72ae962401465bfd4609482.jpeg)
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition characterised by elevated blood glucose (or blood sugar) levels. There are two main types, commonly referred to as type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is believed to be caused by an autoimmune reaction and develops early in life, whereas type 2 develops over many years and is linked to lifestyle factors such as obesity. In the UK, over 90% of all adults with diabetes have type 2.
There’s also a lesser-known third type of diabetes called gestational diabetes. This is the result of high blood sugar that develops during pregnancy and usually goes away after giving birth.
What’s the cause?
At their core, both types of diabetes stem from sufferers having too much glucose in their blood. This could be because the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, the insulin it produces isn’t effective, or it can’t produce any insulin.
So, how exactly does this happen? We all need glucose, but insulin is an essential component of glucose regulation, allowing the glucose in our blood to enter our cells and fuel our bodies. For the average healthy person, the pancreas senses when glucose has entered the bloodstream and releases the right amount of insulin, allowing glucose into our cells. But if you have diabetes, this system doesn’t work. This allows blood glucose levels to rise while the rest of your cells are deprived of much-needed energy, which can lead to a wide variety of problems, including heart disease, stroke, and kidney and nerve damage.
What are the symptoms?
If not managed, both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can lead to symptoms such as:
• Urinating frequently
• Feeling very thirsty and drinking a lot
• Feeling very hungry
• Feeling very fatigued
• Blurry vision
• Having cuts or sores that don’t heal properly
• Very dry skin
• Suffering from more infections than usual
While type 1 diabetes can develop quickly over weeks or even days, many people can have type 2 diabetes for years without realising it. This is because the early symptoms tend to be less noticeable.
Is there a solution?
Diabetes can be effectively managed through medication when diagnosed early, usually in the form of tablets or insulin injections. Although there’s currently no cure for either type, studies show that, by losing weight, some people with type 2 can go into ‘diabetes remission’. This is when blood sugar levels drop below the diabetes range, so medication is no longer needed.
Of course, as with everything, prevention is the best cure. While there are unfortunately no known risk factors for type 1 diabetes other than genetics, type 2 can be effectively prevented by a combination of lifestyle changes, such as eating more healthily, losing weight if needed and exercising more frequently.

The Joy of Jigsaws
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/241114104407-6be31f80fe8b5e617c6e9a5233dfa7dd/v1/fae64e6b3ebd479b0137927a15b60c91.jpeg)
Jigsaw puzzles come in many shapes and sizes – and they can provoke a wide range of emotions, from frustration to euphoria, depending on how easy or hard it is to find pieces that fit together. They are great at helping us unwind, relax, and take on a challenge. Here we look at five ways they can boost your health.
1. Decrease stress levels and improve your mood
According to scientific research, the brain goes into a near-dreamlike state when assembling a puzzle. Exercising both sides of the brain simultaneously also allows the brain to move from a Beta state (the wakeful mind) to an Alpha state, the same mental state as dreaming. The Alpha state is where we tap into our subconscious mind. Jigsaw puzzles naturally induce this state of creative, focused meditation, where connections can be made on deeper levels
2. Cognitive benefits
Jigsaw puzzles can aid the development of children’s minds, from spatial and organisational skills to patience and selfcontrol. They can also be excellent for children and adults in improving and maintaining fine motor skills and concentration
3. Improve working memory
Boosting your working memory helps with dayto-day tasks remembering where you left your glasses or keys or even where you parked your car in the car park.
When sorting through the jigsaw puzzle pieces looking for a specific shape or colour, these details are retained in your working memory and help to reinforce the connections between the brain cells. This, in turn, can make your thought processing faster
4. Reduce screen time
Jigsaw puzzling is immersive. It’s easy for several hours to pass before you realise you haven’t checked your phone or looked at the TV.
5. Connect with others
Our well-being is based on both our health and our social connections. Host a puzzle night, start a puzzle tournament or just start a puzzle anywhere in the home others can access. Family members will stop to connect a few pieces when they have a moment to spare.
Jigsaw trivia
• Jigsaws were first known as dissected maps. It wasn’t until the beginning of the 1900s that ‘jigsaw puzzle’ was first officially used.
• Jigsaws enjoyed a particular resurgence in popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns. Instagram filters and well-being advertising have also provided a boost for jigsaws, with them being dubbed ‘self-care objects’.
• The first jigsaw was invented in 1767 by John Spilsbury, a London engraver and map maker. Spilsbury attached a map of the world to a piece of wood and then cut out each country using a hand-held fretsaw. Teachers used Spilsbury’s dissected map to teach geography.

Shockwave Therapy: Your Secret Weapon Against Heel Pain
By Scott Gormley, Shropshire Physiotherapy
What’s Heel Pain and Why Does It Happen?
Heel pain can feel like a thorn in your side. One minute you’re walking happily, and the next, every step sends jolts of discomfort through your heel. This pesky problem often comes from conditions like plantar fasciitis or achilles tendon pain. It can make simple tasks like walking or standing feel like climbing a mountain. How did it get to this point? Common causes include overuse, improper footwear, or even just age-related wear and tear. Understanding where the pain comes from is key to tackling it head-on.
Shockwave Therapy: What Is It?
Shockwave therapy sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but it’s a real treatment that can help with heel pain. This method uses high-energy sound waves to boost healing in the affected area. Imagine it as sending tiny messages deep into your heel, telling your body to fix itself. The waves increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and kickstart the healing process. It’s non-invasive, meaning no surgery, and can often lead to relief just when you need it.
How Does It Work?
The procedure is straightforward. A physiotherapist applies a special device that emits shockwaves to your painful heel. You might feel a bit of discomfort initially, like someone tapping your heel a bit too hard, but most people find it tolerable. Treatments usually last about 15 to 20 minutes, and while you might feel some improvement

after just one session, many find the best results come after multiple treatments. It’s like watering a plant; it takes time to see it bloom.
Why Choose Shockwave Therapy?
You might wonder, “Is this the right choice for me?” Well, shockwave therapy can be a fantastic alternative if you’ve tried other treatments without success. It’s especially great for folks who want to avoid surgery or heavy medications. Plus, it’s quick and anyone can fit it into their busy schedule. Why suffer longer than you have to? Shockwave boasts over 92% success rate in heel pain.
What Can I Expect After Treatment?
After your sessions, you may feel a sense of relief, but some people experience mild soreness. Think of it like the feeling after a good workout; your body is adjusting and healing. Your physiotherapist will usually suggest simple exercises
to keep things moving and help prevent future heel pain. It’s essential to follow their advice to maximize the benefits of the treatment.
Real Success Stories
Many people have walked through the doors of Shropshire Physiotherapy clinic feeling defeated by heel pain. After starting shockwave therapy, they’ve transformed their lives. Imagine being able to run after the kids, take a stroll in the park, or simply enjoy standing at a party without wincing. It’s not just about pain relief; it’s about getting your life back.
Conclusion: Take the First Step
Heel pain doesn’t have to rule your life. If you’re tired of letting it hold you back, consider shockwave therapy. With its minimal downtime and impressive results, it could be the key to your pain-free future. So why wait? Take that step and start your journey towards relief today!
News Year’s Eve with a difference
New Year’s Eve doesn’t have the best reputation in the UK. The cold weather, coupled with the 1am scramble for over-priced taxis, lead many of us to bring in the new year at home. However, if you’re tired of counting down to midnight in your local pub, why not do things a little differently this year?

New York, USA
Few cities boast such a dizzying amount of new year’s action as New York. Whether you’re there for the classic ball drop and confetti flurry in Times Square, or the fireworks displays at Central Park, South Street Seaport and Prospect Park, New York has an event on every corner. Just remember to layer up – the Big Apple can get pretty chilly in winter!
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Why not welcome in the new year at Rio’s legendary Copacabana New Year’s Eve beach party? A staggering two million people gather on the 2.5-mile-long beach for samba, champagne and fireworks on 31 December, so be sure to show up early to get a good spot.
The celebrations are even more special if you take part in local customs too. Dress in white, and when midnight strikes, jump over seven waves for good luck.
Sydney, Australia
Sydney is one of the first big cities to welcome the new year, with more than a million people gathering around Sydney Harbour to watch the light displays over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Hire out a boat, bring your own bubbles and start the countdown early, or reserve a table at one of the waterfront restaurants by the bridge for a front-row seat.
Reykjavik, Iceland
Reykjavik doesn’t have an official fireworks display, but that doesn’t stop the locals from having some of the world’s most spectacular pyrotechnics every New Year’s Eve. Over 200,000 people (virtually the city’s entire population) take charge each year by buying fireworks from ICE-SAR, Iceland’s search-and-rescue department, and letting them off at midnight.
Tokyo, Japan
In Tokyo, New Year’s Eve, or ‘Omisoka’, is celebrated with a blend of cultural tradition and modern festivities – perfect if you’re looking to welcome in the new year a little differently.
Tuck into a meal of toshikoshi soba (a special kind of New Year’s Eve noodles) and visit one of the city’s temples for the bell-ringing ritual. At midnight, a monk rings the temple bell 108 times, correlating to the number of worldly desires recognised by Japanese Buddhism.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is transitioning into summer by the end of December, making New Year’s Eve the perfect time to visit. The mother of all celebrations usually takes place on the V&A Waterfront, complete with dinner, live music, dancing and fireworks. To get the best views, pack a picnic and take a cable car up Table Mountain just as the fireworks begin – you won’t regret it!
