A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT 2011 was an exciting and productive year for the ASHAM board and all of its members. Many new programs were implemented, and existing programs were expanded upon. The year began with a bang at the MSU Horse Expo, where the American Saddlebred was showcased in a way that would

f you had told me last year that CH At First Sight (Uno) and I would earn a third place finish at Louisville, I probably would have thought you were crazy. If you had told me that we would earn that third place in show pleasure driving, I 6
may have even laughed in disbelief. But that’s just what we did and we did it all in two months time. It was my last year as a junior exhibitor and I wanted to show at Louisville. Realistically, we knew showing Uno under saddle would
be disappointing. A chance workout in the jog cart sparked a new idea, though. We knew that Uno had been a driving horse at the beginning of his show career, but we hadn’t given that a second thought. That was, until my mom remembered that there was a junior exhibitor show pleasure driving class at Louisville. After a hasty phone call to Tom, it was decided. I was going to drive Uno at Louisville. Wednesday morning at Louisville was probably the most memorable experience I had in my six years of showing at the World’s Championship Horse Show. Uno was perfect and I had a blast showing on the green shavings as a junior exhibitor for the last time. After only two months of driving, not only did we not crash, but we did well, well enough to earn a third place ribbon. I left for school the week after Louisville, but I wasn’t quite ready to give up my new driving career. So I came home for ASHAM and drove Uno to the title of ASHAM show pleasure driving champion. That title clinched the ASHAM high point award, and Uno was named the show pleasure driving state champion. Last year proved to all of us at Tom Sworm Stables how truly special Uno is and I am so thankful for this sweet horse who made my last year as a junior exhibitor unforgettable. — Lizzie Edgar 2012

TAYLOR CREEK STABLES Wes and Sena Bowling 2156 Bach Davison, Michigan 48423 (248) 459-0059 • (248) 459-0875 www.taylorcreekstables.com Once again, here we are writing the annual barn news. We are proud to say that this marks our 20 year anniversary for Taylor Creek doing this traditional activity! Oooooh does time fly! 2011 marked another successful year for Team Taylor Creek with successful performances in Michigan, Ohio, New York and Kentucky. Wonderful memories were made while many life lessons were learned! All in all, in retrospect, it was a fabulous year for both our show and academy riders. Our Rackin’ Riders Youth Club once again had an enjoyable year expanding their equestrian knowledge with many fun and educational activities. This year they can’t wait to meet the challenge of fund-raising activities for ASHAM and the Saddlebred Rescue program, being led by their fearless leader, Miss Erin Shirey! We know your efforts will certainly be appreciated by all involved. The Taylor Creek lesson and academy programs continue to flourish thanks to our fleet of amazing school horses: Tag, Big Bob, Whiz, Mogul, Andrew, Big Andy Merwin, Benny Scoggin, and Swinger Labrie. This truly is a group of the most amazing equine individuals to teach, challenge and protect their riders of all ages and abilities. Special thanks to Aimee Labrie and Erin Shirey for being the tried and true lesson horse pit crew that keeps it all rolling behind the scenes!
The Taylor Creek Stables group.

Once again, we are very proud to be the host barn for the Michigan Instructors’Association Winter Academy Shows. The traditional warm and friendly atmosphere inspires a strong sense of camaraderie, while fostering competition that is truly world-class! The lessons learned from these shows catapult our riders to the next level. We are so thankful for their love and dedication to the program! As always, a big “Thank You” to everyone who helps to make these shows run smoothly. We could not do it without you guys! So far, 2012 has been marked by several sales. Taylor Creek Stables is certainly establishing itself as the marketplace of the North, selling a variety of finished show stars along with some spectacular prospects. Looking ahead to this spring, we are very excited to see the first crop of babies sired by our incredible young stallion Bluesville (Northern Blues x Ampleigh). We anticipate more incredible prospects on the way! 25
2012 will bring the arrival of many new faces in the show ring that are sure to grab your attention, while some old favorites are looking better than ever! So stay tuned and watch what may be the most interesting season of all unfold! A special “Thank You” to all our customers for your continued love and support!
Visitors are always welcome and the coffee is always on! I would like to share with everyone a poem that has hung on our wall for over 20 years. We have referred to it over and over again to children, parents, as well as ourselves. It is the answer to a commonly asked question:
Why Show Horses? Have you ever wondered Why do we show? Does it seem to be important Who you are or who do you know? Do you pout and throw tantrums If ribbons don’t come your way? Then read carefully my friend Please hear what I say. The horse is a living being
Both your friend and your foe He’s the ultimate challenge Of what you do and don’t know Can you team with this creature? Will you both give your best? The show ring is the stage Your performance is the test. The victory is the knowledge
That a horseman you’ve become It’s worth all the pain and tears It’s the ultimate fun To compete with equals Ride your steed with such pride Why go to the horse show? Not for the ribbon, but the ride!

Good Luck to Everyone and may you have the “Ride” of your life in 2012!
