Introducing…

THE MIDWEST SHOW HORSE DIRECTORY After twenty five years of the American Saddlebred Horse Association of Michigan, also known as ASHAM, creating its own yearly magazine, we have expanded into a new venture. Our goal is to create a beautiful reference guide for services within our show horse breeds, as well as a venue to celebrate yearly accomplishments. STATEMENT OF PURPORSE The Michigan Saddlebred Magazine is published annually by the American Saddlebred Horse Association of Michigan (ASHAM), a non-profit corporation, and is distributed to all members and to Saddlebred farms in Michigan, Ohio, Canada, as well as other states as supplies permit. Magazine Committee: Sena Bowling, Lauren Greenwald and Cassidy Dolby The Purpose of the Association shall be to promote interest in, and in the best interests of, the American Saddlebred Horse in the state of Michigan and elsewhere, through education of the virtues of this breed and improvement of the quality of the breed; support and promotion of exhibitions and shows; encouragement and assistance of owners of the breed in the care and training there of; stimulation, promotion, and encouragement of the interest of young people in the breed; cooperation with other organizations and individuals; promote and improve general equestrian activities; dissemination of cooperation, enjoyment, and good sportsmanship among members of the Association and others.

The Midwest Show Horse Directory has no subscribers and has been published by a non-profit corporation as a club project. Approximately 500 copies has been distributed. ASHAM is not responsible for errors or omissions. Copy and artwork are reproduced to the best of our ability and no guarantee is made to advertisers. Articles are accepted on a space available basis at the discretion of the Magazine Committee. All advertising must be paid in advance.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As the President of the American Saddlebred Horse Association of Michigan, I would like to welcome you to our first annual issue of the Midwest Show Horse Magazine. The American Saddlebred Horse Association of Michigan has been producing an annual Magazine for over thirty years, and because the show horse business is interconnected, ASHAM recognized the need for thinking beyond our state borders. We saw the need to support each other through this greater regional connection because of showing at many of the same shows and purchasing from the same vendors. ASHAM wanted to increase our yearly publication to a regional magazine attract bigger advertisers and distribute to a wider audience. Our goal is for the Midwest Show Horse Directory to be the go to source for show dates, association contacts, vendors, and the promotion of high point winners in our region. The Midwest Show Horse Directory is an opportunity to unite the region, expand exposure and encourage growth while being cost effective. This is my third year serving as the President, and with the ASHAM board, we have the following goals: Increase exposure and education about the American Saddlebred in Michigan, promote amateur sportsmanship, continue our charitable contributions to O.A.T.S. and continue the growth of the ASHAM Fall Charity Horse Show. ASHAM has hosted multiple Girl Scout Badge Days to increase exposure of our breed to the general public. We have reached out to numerous equine groups as well as increasing the use of social media to increase the visibility of our breed to the horse public. More releases will be submitted to equine publications and local media about ASHAM and our Fall Charity Horse Show October 10-12th, 2019. This is the seventh year in a row that the ASHAM Fall Charity Horse Show has been the UPHA Chapter 20 Honor Show. The word is out about the great location, hospitality, and management. 2018 enjoyed an increase in class sponsorships, exhibitor parties, and overall exhibitor participation. Many thanks to the individuals and groups who contributed their time and money. We are proud that our UPHA Exceptional Challenge Cup classes are always a great success. O.A.T.S. Therapeutic Riding Center brings loads of riders and spectators every year and we are proud to continue support of them as our chosen charity. With hard work, ASHAM will continue to improve and succeed. We are always looking for fresh ideas to make an already great weekend even more enjoyable! Whether it be Good Luck in the show ring or Happy Trails, I wish everyone the best for the year 2019!

ON OUR COVER...

Camryn Silverton The Midwest Show Horse Directory is proud to present a tribute to the junior exhibitor career of Camryn Silverton on this year’s cover. Camryn’s love for horses began at age 4 when her parents introduced her to lessons and then flourished into a true love for the American Saddlebred. Her supportive parents, Kimball and Jennifer, along with brother Aidan, fueled her growing passion upon the purchase of her first 10 and Under Walk and Trot horse, I’m So Smooth and then made the move to Taylor Creek Stables,Wes and Sena Bowling in Davison, MI.After many victory passes in 10 and Under, Camryn stepped up to the challenges of Junior Exhibitor Park with her new mount, Catalino. This exciting pair soon became top contenders in their division throughout the country. After two seasons with Catalino, Camryn transitioned smoothly into Junior Exhibitor Three Gaited 13 & under division with the very elegant mare,WC Prophet’s Song. This game, quirky mare developed Camryn’s smooth riding style and the ability to always make it look easy. For the last few years, Camryn was drawn to the five gaited division, bringing us to our final chapter as a junior exhibitor: Camryn’s union with the colorful gelding,Wish Me Radiant. This energetic, go-get-it performer, pushed Camryn’s riding abilities to a whole other level. 2016 marked their debut season and was pivotal in her development as a rider. This pair soon became a dominant force in the Junior Exhibitor Five Gaited Show Pleasure division, with strong wins in Ohio and New York, paving the way to the green shavings. Competing with the best of the best, the duo rose to the occasion to come out on top as the Junior Exhibitor Five Gaited Show Pleasure DIV I World’s Champions, making the first World’s titles for both. This pair continued to thrill us over the past two seasons with victory pass after victory pass. With Camryn off to school, her future partner, The Blues Prophet (Bluesville x Prophet’s Song), is now also in training. This is a celebration of Camryn’s lifelong love of showing horses and the American Saddlebred. Cheers!!

WING C OMMA NDER’S

75th Birthday

On April 14th, 2018 The American Saddlebred Horse Association of Michigan hosted a celebration in honor of World’s Grand Champion CH Wing Commander’s 75th birthday. This celebration was held in Rochester, Michigan at Meadowbrook Hall, childhood home of the internationally known horsewoman, Frances Dodge. In early childhood, Frances moved to this home designed by her widowed mother, Matilda Dodge Wilson, and her second husband, Fred Wilson. On this land, Frances was encouraged to ride horses along with her brother, Daniel, thus beginning a lifelong passion for horses. This was the site Frances later founded Dodge Stables where she created an incomparable breeding program.

I

n 1940, Frances purchased the five-gaited mare, Flirtation Walk, from Dixiana Farm Lexingon, Kentucky. The following year, she purchased the five-gaited stallion, Anacacho Shamrock from Anacacho Ranch in Spofford, Texas. Frances bred the two and the cross produced three world’s champions for Dodge Stables: WC CH Lover’s Lane, WGC CH Dream Waltz, and WGC CH Wing Commander. In 1945, succeeding the death of head trainer, Wallace Bailey, Earl Teater accepted psostion as trainer and manager of Dodge Stables. The team of Wing Commander and Earl Teater made their debut at Lexington during his three year old year. The two impressed the crowds and Wing Commander was dubbed the greatest saddle horse since Bourbon King. It was in 1948, Wing Commander’s 5 year old year, that this team won their first of six consecutive World’s Grand Championships. That year was one of the greatest accomplishments for Dodge Stables; Earl Teater won the mare stake on Lover’s Lane, the junior five gaited stake on Show Boat, the gelding stake with Blue Hawaii, and Wing Commander also won the stallion stake. In 1949 Frances Dodge married Frederick VanLenep and the Dodge Stable horses were moved to Castleton Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. Wing Commander ended his show ring career after nine years of showing and continued to breed in Lexington. He passed away in

1969, his legacy as greatest sire of all time carrying on through his offspring. Wing Commander sired 42 horses who won World’s Championships or Reserve World’s Championship. In honor of this grand horse whose legacy began in Michigan, it was fitting to throw a party celebrating his remarkable contribution to the American Saddlebred Industry. ASHAM board members rented out Meadowbrook Hall that evening in April very close to Wing Commander’s actual foaling date of April 2rd, 1943. Through generous sponsorships by Hagerman Farms LLC, Phil and Jocelyn Hagerman, Jeffery Fetzer, Gerych’s, and Sapphire Blue Investment Partners, this historical night of celebration was made possible. The evening began with cocktails and tours of the 110 room mansion. Guests were able to see the majority of the 88,000 square foot home. After Matilda and Alfred toured England homes for ideas on their home, Matilda was involved in every aspect of construction. Construction took three years and Matilda prided herself on the fact that the majority of the furniture was made by Americans. Officially being finished in 1929, the home cost $4 million and was equipped with all modern amenities including a central heating system, two elevators, a home theater, three kitchens, and 39 brick chimneys. Following tours, fellow Saddlebred lovers gathered for a strolling dinner through the main floor of the mansion.

Dinner was served at opposing ends of the floor so guests were able to admire all rooms an the artwork in between. Among the artwork is the piece of Frances on her bay horse, Pendennis in what is rumored to be the largest oil painting George Ford Morris ever created. Guests then moved to the ballroom for a special presentation by Dave Bedell, who shared his cherished memories about Wing Commander and Frances with the attendees. He recalled asking Frances if she had ever ridden Wing Commander and she did not give him an answer but the twinkle in her eye told him she just may have ridden him. The night wrapped up with desserts served by the butlers and dancing in the ballroom. As guests left Meadowbrook Hall, they drove across the rest of the estates 1.500 acres. What once was the birth place of perhaps one of the greatest American Saddlebreds of all time is now the home of Oakland University. The Wilsons donated the entire estate to the college in the 1950s. Tours are given almost daily and Meadowbrook Hall is able to be rented out for special occasions. 75 years ago Frances Dodge bred Wing Commander. Almost all American Saddlebred bloodlines today can trace back to this stallion. The American Saddlebred industry would not be what it is today without Wing Commander. This celebration allowed fellow American Saddlebred lovers to take a step back in time, reminiscing on the legacy left behind by one of the greatest horses of all time.
