A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Members and Friends Don’t look now, but it’s Show Time! We are very excited to announce that for 2016 the ASHAM Charity Fall Horse Show is now a point approved show for Mid-America Horse Show Association and the Illinois Saddlebred Pleasure Horse Association. We are looking forward to all the new riders from out of state. The ASHAM Charity Fall Horse show’s date this year is October 6th-8th, located in the heated Michigan State University Pavilion in East Lansing, Michigan. Therefore, no matter what the weather is outside, we will all be very comfortable. We will still have the same great stabling we have always had. For the last two years the show has in-crease in numbers and we hope this growth continues in 2016. Our sponsorships are so important this year. Please find the sponsorship form in the magazine or on the ASHAM website, www.asham.org. Please indicate the class or classes you wish to sponsor with your contributions. Remember your generous contributions are how we provide all the fun “extras” at our show! Thursday afternoon we are offering free subs, chips, and pop for our incoming exhibitors. We also have complimentary donuts and coffee every morning. Don’t forget our popular Exhibitor Fiesta Party Thursday evening after the classes. Friday night’s After Glow Party and our Exhibitor’s Lunch on Saturday. ASHAM is a great horse show because we all pull together and make everyone feel welcomed. We promise you will have fun! Come for a great horse show and a wonderful time, you will be glad you did. We had beautiful weather in 2015, making for a great horse show. We are hoping to an even bigger and better show in 2016! We rented lighting for the outside warm up ring and had many favorable comments about that. The exhibitor parties are exceptional. Thanks to everyone who helped behind the scenes and donated so much of their time to help the show run smoothly. With everyone’s contribution we were able to have a wonderful show and exhibitor parties! I would like to give a special thanks to Cindy Scoggin for all her hard work managing the show, you make the show great! Thanks to everyone for all they do. We were happy to choose “O.A.T.S.” as our philanthropic partners once again this year at the ASHAM horse show. O.A.T.S. is a local therapeutic riding center, whose wonderful and talented riders also come to compete at our horse show. Once again their riders were a class act as ASHAM. We were proud to host the UPHA Exceptional Challenge Cup qualifying class, which was a heartwarming experience for everyone as we watched so many smiles from the riders. We are looking forward to having them back in 2016 I’ve enjoyed serving on the board of ASHAM for the last two years as your President. I appreciate the help and support I had received over the years. Being a part of ASHAM has been wonderful. There are many great people and I have made so many new friends as well. I enjoy being with everyone from all the Michigan barns and consider all of you my friend. I am looking forward to 2016 and working with a wonderful group of board members; we have a great team and new faces ready to serve you. I would like to thank everyone who placed ads in the 2016 magazine, the money we make from the magazine helps pay for the year end annual meeting and awards banquet. Please continue to support ASHAM and our beautiful Saddlebred horses! I hope to see many of you at the shows this year. Good luck and have a great year showing!

2016 ASHAM Charity Efforts
F
or the third consecutive year, ASHAM was proud to select OATS (Offering Alternative Therapy with Smiles) as our charity par tner for the 2015 fall horse show. Because of the wonderful suppor t of ASHAM sponsors as well as Michigan Saddlebred trainings barns, ASHAM was able to provide all stalls and bedding for the horses used by OATS riders. As ASHAM’s relationship with OATS has continued to flourish, many classes have been added to the shows program specifically for these riders, expanding the classes in both
English and Western divisions to cater to all of our riders. This year UPHA Exceptional Rider clas-ses were offered that drew riders not only from OATS but other barns as well. The required UPHA pattern was executed in all the classes as a critical aspect of qualifying for the national champion-ship at the American Royal. These required patterns add an extra challenge and create a reward-ing sense of accomplishment for each rider with encouragement and suppor t from the large crowd on hand. We were proud to host over a dozen riders who competed for ribbons in these classes and were

ASHAM is pleased with the continued growth of their charity effor ts and was able to present a significant donation to suppor t the OATS organization due to the success of the ASHAM Fall Show. Next year, it is expected the suppor t and collaboration with OATS will continue to grow even larger as ASHAM is looking forward to the new UPHA Exceptional Rid-er On-Lead class. These classes will qualify for the newly approved UPHA finals for this divi-sion. This will open the option for an even larger number of riders to compete and showcase their skills. Funds for all of our expenses come from memberships and sponsors during the ASHAM Charity Fall Horse Show. We are very fortunate to have a dedicated and passionate all-volunteer crew so we don’t have to pay for staffing. Our Executive Directors and board members currently volunteer many hours of their time and many members volunteer during the show. However it takes more than just the dedication and passion of our volunteers to run an association. American Saddlebred Horse Association of Michigan relies on the generosity of our supporters to help us fulfill our mission of promoting the American Saddlebred horse. We have noticed a dramatic decline in our memberships and would like to address this ongoing reduction in our members by asking for your support. So we are beginning a new campaign. AMERICAN SADDLEBRED AMBASSADOR PROGRAM The ASHA is excited to announce that the new “Breed Ambassador Program” was unanimously approved by the ASHA Board on May 11, 2015 The ASHA Breed Ambassador Program seeks to recognize and reward the many things members are already doing to introduce our beautiful horses to the non-Saddlebred public by giving points for activities like taking a Saddlebred to an open breed show, riding in parades, conducting a seminar, riding in organized all-breed trail rides, giving public riding lessons, holding camps, putting on shows, garnering media attention, and much more. We recognize that different methods work in different areas, and that not all regions have the same type of equine activities or even Saddlebred populations, but members are not limited by discipline or access to ASB-specific clubs or events. Additionally, there will be Breed Ambassadors in three different categories: Individual, Barn Group, or Charter Club. The ASHA Charter Clubs, both nationally and abroad, have agreed to collect the data in December of each year, and Regional Champions and Reserve Champions in each of the categories will be named for each ASHA Region. The highest point earners from among the Regional Champion Breed Ambassadors will be named World Champion and Reserve World Champion Breed Ambassadors at the 2016 ASHA Convention. Participants need not register in advance or be a charter club member, although it is encouraged for the participants to contact their closest charter club to confirm participation and for charter clubs to reach out to the area Saddlebred owners to collect information. Breed Ambassadors must be members of the ASHA. The ASHA and Charter Clubs are seeking donations of items of value to help reward our new Ambassadors. ASHA is a 501c3, and the donors will be named in press releases, social media, and on the website. Read more: www.asha.net—MEDIA & EVENTS or contact Brenda Newell, b.newell@asha.net (859) 259-3886. ASHA ANNOUNCES THE ASHA BREED AMBASSADOR AWARD WINNERS The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) is please to announce the inaugural ASHA Breed Ambassador Award winners. The ASHA Breed Ambassador Award was designed to recognize those actively promoting the American Saddlebred throughout the year. The ASHA Breed Ambassador Award program recognizes high point winners in ten regions and Europe in three divi-sions: Individual, Barn and Charter Club, as well as a World Champion and Reserve World Champion in each division. Winners are chosen by high point scores, where points are awarded for various activities that promote the American Saddlebred. The compe-tition year for this program was January 1-December 21. The World Champion and Reserve World Champion winners will be rec-ognized this year at the ASHA Awards Luncheon on Thursday, February 11, 2016 during the 2016 Super Convention which is being held at the Westin Boston Waterfront in Boston, MA. 2015’S REGION 8 WINNERS INCLUDE:

Reserve World Champion Individual Ambassador Award Region 8 Holly Armstrong & Paddyngton’s Mark of Distinction had a busy year shar-ing our wonderful American Saddlebred horses to the public, earning them the Reserve World Champion Individual Ambassador Award. Holly and Marcus took it out of the show ring to promote “fall in Love with the American Saddlebred” to thousands. Besides their busy show sched-ule, and Marcus’s fame of being a Breyer Horse model with many meet and greets at many of the shows, they also participated and performed at Ex-pos, Parades, media press releases, TV interviews and had the honor of making Michigan History with the christening of the new MI State Fair Are-na, with Marcus being the Fair’s Ambassador Horse, doing daily demonstra-tions and several days of introducing the American Saddlebred to thou-sands. Back again to Breyerfest in Lexington, KY for a weekend full of sharing the American Saddlebred to a stadium packed full of adoring fans and horse lovers! Holly has taken several of her Saddlebreds to open shows, showing the versatility of the breed, and has done several Parades, including the Na-tionally televised America’s Thanksgiving Parade, where the American Saddlebreds were exposed to Millions!! USEF Announces New Equine ccinon Rue RELEASE: November 12, 2015 AUTHOR/ADMINISTRATOR: USEF ommunicons Dermen
Lexington, Ky. – In January, the USEF Board of Directors approved an addion to the rule book, which outlines equine vaccinaon requirements at licensed com‐ peons. Beginning December 1, 2015, all horses entering the grounds of a Fed‐ eraon‐ licensed compeon must be accompanied by documentaon of Eq‐ uine Influenza Virus and Equine Herpes Virus (Rhinopneumonis) vaccinaons within six months prior to entering the stables. Due to several high profile Equine Herpes (EHV) outbreaks in recent years that have involved the neuropathic strain of the virus (equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy‐EHM), some compeons have placed vaccinaon requirements on their competors that go beyond most accepted medical opinions and raise concern that unnecessary requirements can potenally put a horse at risk. The intent of this rule is to ensure that all licensed compeons comply with the vac‐ cinaon guidelines for Equine Influenza and Equine Herpes (Rhinopneumonis) published by the American Associaon of Equine Praconers (AAEP). These guidelines are reviewed by infecous disease experts regularly, and recommend vaccinang compeon horses at six‐month intervals for both equine influenza (flu) and rhinopneumonis (EHV‐1 and EHV‐4). There is not a vaccine that protects against EHM. Intended to promote proper vaccinaon protocols, this rule does not ancipate an increased work‐ load for compeon management. The flu vaccinaon informaon can be added to the documenta‐ on already required by most compeons: a horses health cerficate and a negave coggins test. Read R845 in its enrety (Next Page) If you have quesons regarding R845 please contact the USEF Drugs Medicaons department at medequestrian@aol.com or 800‐633‐2472. www.usef.org
