STUART BONSER

CHAIRMAN'S WELCOME Good afternoon and welcome to the NFU Sports Ground for today’s FA Vase game against Romulus FC and may I extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Romulus FC and hope we all enjoy a good game. I start with sad news of the passing of an Ashby Ivanhoe FC legend in Charlie Tissington Snr who sadly died last Tuesday. If you go to the Ashby Ivanhoe FC Facebook page you will see a very befitting tribute to Charlie and the influence and effect he had on this club over the many years he was involved. All of our thoughts are with Charlie’s family and especially to his Son Charlie Tissington Jnr, who as you all know has equally been instrumental in the past success of this club. Today we are joined by our 2 under 8 teams who will be walking out with the players before he game and is testament to how we are joined up as a club and involve and promote a player pathway from junior to senior and I’m sure there will be a few

Last weeks home win against Cradley Town maintained our push and we hope that a run in the vase can also be achieved today. All that remains is to wish Andy, his staff and players all the best today and enjoy the game. ANDY GRAY

FIRST TEAM UPDATE Hello all. Welcome back to the NFU. A brief word about our last game v Crawley. The narrow 3-2 victory was positive but our performance, not so. We started well but allowed our standards to drop and made it a very difficult afternoon for all concerned. We assessed our fitness levels and discovered that we were a little fatigued. We've played a lot of games in a very short space of time and this was partly why our performance was 'lack lustre'. This week we've focussed on recovery and our physio Elise has aided with this during our training sessions. Hopefully we're rejuvenated and ready for today's opponents. Romulus are sure to be a very tough opposition and they are currently doing well in the division above.

FA Vase day is always special and hopefully today we'll have enough to see us progress further in the competition. Enjoy the game. Regards, Andy Gray.

VS ROMULUS - SATURDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER 2021 - WWW.ASHBYIVANHOEFC.CO.UK

IN OPPOSITION TODAY

ROMULUS

The story of Romulus Football Club began in 1979, when Club Founder and President Roger Evans aided by a small band of other parents - decided to form a club where the best young players from North Birmingham were able to play football, irrelevant of their ability to pay subs. The club started with two age groups: the Under 12s, managed by George Griffin, and the Under 13s, managed by Roger. The teams played at their first home, Penns Lane, in Sutton Coldfield. Success was instant and consistent. During their early years Romulus were regular winners of both the Lichfield League and the Birmingham Boys League, as well as the Staffordshire FA Youth Cup. As well as winning trophies, the Roms quickly developed a reputation for producing top class youth team players. Dean Sturridge (Derby, Leicester), Stuart Bowen (West Bromwich Albion), Luke Rogers (Shrewsbury Town & LA Galaxy) Darius Vassell (Aston Villa, Man City and England), Pablo Mills ( Derby, Rotherham United and Crawley), brothers Stefan and Luke Moore (Aston Villa), and Zat Knight (Fulham, Aston Villa and Bolton), Marvin Johnson (Kidderminster and Motherwell), Nathan Blissett (Kidderminster and Bristol Rovers), and Ben Richards Everton (Partick Thistle via Tamworth FC) are all players who went on to flourish in professional football after lengthy youth service to the Roms. While the youth sides continued to flourish, the Romulus story then took an exciting new turn by entering senior football in the Sutton and District Sun-day League. Initially placed in Division Two, Roms won three successive championships, and this heralded a move to the stronger Birmingham Sunday Festival League. This time Roms started off in Division Four, and another four consecutive promotions followed, taking the club directly to the Premier Division. At the tender age of 28, current owner Richard Evans took the Player/Manager's role having played in every season since Romulus began,

doing that alongside a successful Saturday career in the now Conference North with Moor Green (Now Solihull Moors FC) and Stourbridge FC. For the next two years Romulus continued to succeed at the top of local Sunday football, before the decision was taken to progress into the Saturday game. Twenty years after they were formed, the club joined the English Football Association's Saturday Pyramid system. And what a success this proved to be! Promotions followed as Roms climbed their way up through the pyramid, and the club stayed at Northern Premier level for eleven years - no other Sunday team has ever emulated this feat and it’s unlikely any other club ev-er will. The 2003/04 season was a record-breaking season for the club, and an enthralling battle for the league title with Leamington FC ended with The Roms gaining promotion to The Midland Football Alliance as champions. This was just one of the triumphs that season, with the Roms completing a unique treble: they also lifted the Birmingham Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup with a 2-1 triumph over Nuneaton Griff, and they won the Midland Combination Endsleigh Challenge Cup, beating Coventry Marconi 2-0. The following season Roms finished a creditable 12th in their Midland Football Alliance debut season, with more cup success following, as they defeated arch rivals Leamington 1-0 in the Tony Allden Memorial Cup final. Champagne corks were popping once again in 2005-06, winning promotion to the Southern Football League, secured as runners-up behind runaway champions Leamington. This success was compounded by an impressive FA Cup run to the 2nd Qualifying Round, coming within seconds of beating Worcester City of the Conference North at St Georges Lane - but a late equaliser and subsequent defeat in the replay ended the Roms dream. But it put the club on the map and sent the club on

its way to the next level with plenty of belief and impetus. THE SOUTHERN/NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE YEARS Romulus joined the Southern League Midlands Division for the 2007-08 season and finished the first season at this level in 10th place. It was a learning curve and hopes were high for the following season. Another successful season followed in 2008-09, both in the league and cup competitions, with Roms again reaching the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, as well as a best ever run in the FA Trophy. The Roms had another groundbreaking season the following year, securing an excellent eighth position in the league, and reaching two County cup semi-finals. Beating Burton Albion 2-1 in the Birmingham Senior quarter final was a notable achievement. In the summer of 2010, with Richard Evans still in charge of team affairs, Romulus were moved sideways in the FA pyramid, to the Evo Stik Northern Premier League. The team finished the season in 10th place on 67 points, our highest ever points tally in a Step 4 league to date. The following two seasons proved a challenge, and in the summer of 2011, Keith Higham took over as chairman from Richard Evans, who had been combining that role with his duties as manager. But a year later there was more change, an in October 2013 - 10 games into the season, with the team riding high at the top of the NPL League - Evans stood down as manager after 15 years and over 900 games at the helm. He wanted to concentrate on the off-field duties required to take the club forward and took over again as Chairman. Evans successor as first team manager was Dave Barnett, and the team finished a creditable 11th in The NPL league on 55 points that season. In 2014 Roms set up a Football Academy for 16-18year olds, which also allows the players to study full time in B-Tec Sports Studies. The Club saw this as a massive step to producing more players capable of moving into the full-time game via the Roms first team - with Yohan Rutty-Smith achieving it in March 2015 when he signed for Notts County. Circa 50 youngsters enroll every season in the Romulus Academy - a fantastic achievement. Future plans for the club include developing the newly acquired Lindridge Road site and continuing the tradition of producing top class

young people and players - a reputation that is spreading nationwide. In the summer of 2015 former Tottenham winger Andy Turner was appointed Academy Director - an exciting move that followed his appointment earlier in the year as joint first team manager with Richard Evans, after Dave Barnett moved on after giving sterling service to the club. Roms finished a respectable 12th at the end of the 2014/15 and 10th in the 2015/16 season, however at the end of the 2017/18 season, Roms tenure was over at Step 4 as they were relegated. A change of direction was agreed with Keith Higham returning as Chairman to run the 1st team structure, allowing Richard Evans the ability to focus on the growing Academy, with Graham Deakin appointed as Academy Manager. The first season in Step 5 saw a mixed season with a change in football management in November 2018, and Mark Swann being appointed to rescue a disappointing debut season in The Midland Football League. Roms finally finished in the lower half of the table, but secured a trophy, by winning the MFL League Cup against NKF Burbage. The start of the 2019/20 season saw further change with Mark Swann leav-ing for Walsall Wood and Romulus moved swiftly to secure the services of Simon Lyons & his backroom staff who had enjoyed considerable success at both Heather St Johns and Coleshill Town. So as Romulus entered their 40th year, hopes were high for a successful season and the continued growth of the club from its base at Castle Vale Stadium. Although the 2019/20 season finished in the most unusual of ways, with the season officially ceasing in March 2020, Romulus finished in a creditable 3rd place. The 2020/21 season will see a complete change at Romulus with Matthew Dainty appointed Chairman, having spent nine years at local rivals Paget Rangers. Also joining the club is former Paget Rangers and Coleshill Town manager, Jason Lanns, who has joined the Roms after a successful season in-charge of Heather St. Johns. Matt and his administration team plus Jason and his coaching staff will bring fresh blood, thinking and impetus to the Club. Despite the uniqueness of this coming season we are planning great things - watch this space!

David Morris

PRESIDENTS PROFILE How long have you been involved with Ashby Ivanhoe FC? I’ve been involved with Since Pre Season 1980 What made you join the club? I was persuaded to join the club by Richard Hinks & Charlie Tissington Jnr What roles have you played in the club during your time? During the last 41 years I’ve been a player, Assistant Manager (to Charlie) briefly, Chairman & now President What position did you play? I started as a centre half but always wanted to be a striker & thankfully Eric Avins agreed & played me there for the rest of my career Who was the best player you played with? The best player I played with was Kenny Horn, if they noted “assists” in those days I imagine he “assisted” for most of my goals Who was the best manager you played under? The best manager I’d say was Chris Kelly, he knew how to get the best out of each player he selected What would be your most memorable game you played in for the club? My most memorable game was The County Cup Final in 1991 at Shepshed Dynamo, we had a terrific team during that period & they were all great lads too, I think some of us are still celebrating 30 years on ! What is your most memorable occasion/event since being involved in the club? List a few if one is not enough: I think the FA Cup run a few years ago was the most memorable event, the weekend was surreal with The FA Cup itself at the ground, Central News coming live from The NFU & then 700+ there for the game the next day just shows the potential we have at the club Where would you like to see the club in the next 5 years? on and off the field? On the field I think we are sustainable at least at Step 5 and off the field now we own the ground (a fantastic achievement by the way) I’d like for the planned “Stage 2” development to progress. To sum up how would you best describe Ashby Ivanhoe FC? I’d describe Ashby Ivanhoe FC as a club with a proud history & hopefully an exciting future STAY UP TO DATE ASHBYIVANHOEFC  @ASHBYIVANHOE_FC  AIFC1948

ASHBY IVANHOE

CLUB HISTORY

A

shby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch. The club currently consists of Two adult teams and Twelve sides in the Junior section. The first team play in the Midland Football League Division One, with the Knights in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was reintroduced for this season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Four. The club’s junior sides ranging from Under 7’s through to Under 18’s play in the Burton Junior Football League and the Tamworth Junior Football Leagues. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 2009/2010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/11 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have

also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 of the Pyramid system playing in the East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League.
