I wanted to focus my notes this week on the Midweek Under 18’s team. The team currently sits top of the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit League Northern Division having come back from a 2-0 deficit against Quorn last Wednesday to win the game 3-2. This was one of the few games that I have been able to go and watch them this season and whilst Alex Roome suggested that he was missing 3 of his best players, I have to say the team represented themselves and the club with glowing respect. Since the club made the decision to introduce an under 18’s side and erect the floodlights on Hood Park 6 years ago, they have gone from strength to strength under the guidance of the Manager, Alex Roome. The role that Alex plays has been instrumental in attracting players to play and pushing them forward into Senior football, many for the first time. This was the belief of the club when we established the team and it will remain the belief for seasons to come as we look to become the “club of choice” for some of the best youngsters in the County. To operate a football club and make it sustainable it is vital that we have a growing number of “home grown” youngsters, who are not just good enough but have the club at heart and want to push into the Senior ranks. This ethos is the right one to have and you can already start to see many of the recent and current Under 18 players representing the club at Senior level. Next week will see the Midweek Under 18’s play their very first game, here at the NFU, since the floodlights were moved from Hood Park and I would invite you all to come down and support the team in their County Cup Quarter Final tie against Oadby Town and see for yourself the talent we have as a club and the work that Alex is putting in with them. Today we welcome many of the past players to the ground, many for the first time as they come together to mark the 10th anniversary since the passing of Paul “Fogger” Foster, who was a player, manager and committee member for many years at the club. Before the game we will be observing a minutes applause for “Fogger”. The coming together of some of the old players at the club coincides with the opening of “the legends lounge” in the clubhouse where you can see old photos, shirts and memories from the past and present. All that remains is to say congratulations to all of our spectators from the club as we have officially gone to the top of the attendance league for the East Midlands Counties League, with an average attendance of 91. Thank you all again for your continued support as we are creating a great little atmosphere at the ground. Enjoy the game. Stuart Bonser Club Chairman

FIRST TEAM UPDATE I would like to give a warm welcome to the players and officials of Kimberley Miners Welfare FC. Kimberley have had a good start to this season’s league campaign, although they have had a number of inconsistent results as we have. I hope that today’s game will be a good encounter. Reflecting on our last 3 games, I thought the game against St Andrews was definitely the comeback of the season to date, how we were not 3 or 4 nil down by half-time amazes me, however, I thought our defenders at times were absolutely fantastic. They threw their bodies on the line and covered around the keeper to prevent St Andrews doubling their lead. I knew our players would be slightly rusty: they hadn’t played a competitive game in almost 3 weeks because I had rested 2/3 of the squad for our Leicestershire Senior Cup game and the game against Ellistown the following week was cancelled. Unfortunately, straight after halftime, St Andrews were awarded a penalty, which resulted in them doubling their lead. However, we halved the deficit within 5 minutes of the restart and after that moment the players drove on to win the game 3-2. The midweek league cup fixture against South Normanton Athletic was a bit of a damp squid after the euphoria of the weekend result. We started the game brightly and possibly should have been 2-0 up within 10 minutes. However, after that point the visitors started to dominate possession and our players weren’t able to match them, also 3 individual errors sealed our fate and the visitors were worthy 3 -1 winners. The Holbrook fixture proved to be one of the most difficult games of the season, alongside the Anstey Nomads game, as we were playing against 10 men. The unfortunate situation when you play against ten men is that a number of players think they have won the game before the final whistle has been blown. They also become complacent and stop doing their jobs and they also become cavalier. Collectively as a group of people, the management team and playing squad need to learn from our mistakes when playing against 10 men in order not to drop 2 points again, having worked so hard to gain the lead initially. It’s encouraging to see the number of supporters watching our home fixtures and it seems as though the attendance will continually increase. The support we have had is generating a great atmosphere for our players to provide entertaining football. Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy today’s game. MATCH REPORT VS SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC ASHBY IVANHOE 1 Saunders 70

SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC 3 Whitt 39, Bowler 74, 88 League Cup 1st Round Replay Tuesday 18th November 2014

Ashby Ivanhoe saw their League Cup hopes ended as South Normanton Athletic recorded a 3-1 victory in the first round replay. It was disappointing for Ashby who were playing their first ever floodlit match at the NFU Sports Ground but the visitors were the more clinical in front of goal and took their chances well. It was Ashby who started the match the better side and they should have opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute when they had two chances in quick succession when firstly Luke Thorogood took the ball down the left side before sending a cross into the area which found Dan Sharp but from close range the shot struck the foot of the defender before they managed to clear. Then seconds later another cross into the area, this time from the right, went straight across the face of goal and at the back post Thorogood couldn’t connect with the ball to turn it home. The visitors had their first effort at goal on ten minutes and they went closer to scoring when a shot beat Ashby keeper Chris Hodge before striking the top of the crossbar and with both sides looking for the opening goal it took until 26 minutes for the next chance at goal which also fell to the visitors when they were awarded a free kick and the shot was on target and forced Hodge into making a routine save. The opening goal of the match came six minutes before the break and it was a well taken goal for South Normanton when a low cross into the area found Ashley Whitt and he was given time to turn before firing in a shot which found the net just inside the near post and it remained 1-0 at the break. Ashby started the second half well as they looked to get back on level terms and just three minutes in they forced they visiting keeper into a save when a free kick from just outside the area was taken by Josh Lowe with the keeper tipping the ball over at the near post and then just after the hour mark another free kick was conceded and from around 25 yards and the keeper again made the save. It was getting increasing likely that for Ashby to score it would be in fortunate circumstances and that was exactly what happened as the match entered the final twenty minutes. It came when a long ball forward, which for the whole match so far was dealt with well by the South Normanton defence, was misjudged leaving Thorogood behind the defence and with just the keeper to beat. The keeper spotting the danger had rushed off his line to the edge of the area and the shot from Thorogood struck the keeper from close range which then came off Chris Saunders and into the bottom corner. The scores were only level for four minutes though when a defensive error from Ashby and another well taken goal saw South Normanton regain the lead. Another long ball forward caused problems for the defence and the attempted headed clearance was missed and Cory Bowler brought the ball down before placing his shot towards the far corner and out of reach of Hodge and the scoring was completed two minutes from time when the visitors sealed their passage into the second round when Bowler gained possession on the edge of the Ashby area before taking the ball past Hodge and finishing into an empty net and Ashby now only have the league to concentrate on for the second half of the season.

UNDER 18S UPDATE Well the youth team followed up the great performance against Aylestone with a sensational comeback away against league leaders Quorn. With key players Stretton, Evans and Grice out with injury it was far from ideal but as I've mentioned previous we have a strong squad this season and although a few players played out of position the boys produced a magnificent showing. They showed true character after going 2-0 down within the first 15 minutes to produce a second half to remember. Angus Blair-Park's glancing header started the comeback with Elliot Beldon levelling after striking a fabulous free kick before in form Jamie Fitzgerald rounded the keeper to slot home the winner on 90 minutes to cap a memorable win which completed the double over Quorn and puts us top of the league with a game in hand. Oscar Blair-Park was sensational playing out of position at left back which earned him his second man of the match of the season. We travelled to Barrow the Wednesday just gone and I hoped we kept up the unbeaten run and this coming Wednesday we have our first match at the NFU when we face Oadby Town Youth in the Quarter Finals of the County Cup An extra plus is that Angus & Elliot have been selected for the Leicestershire County Under 18's Rep side which just goes to prove that the system is working and were developing quite a talent pool for the future. Wishing Tony and the boys all the best Alex Roome Under 18s Manager

DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH MOG Good afternoon and welcome to The NFU Sports Ground for what should be another cracking game in what has been a really exciting season so far. Having picked all my Ashby Ivanhoe defence in the last programme I have now moved onto the midfield where my first selection is Scott Devlin. Scott had a magical left foot, was deadly from free kicks and even on Hood Park at its muddiest he had a great first touch & passing range. He could also play at full back but he is regularly referred to as an Ivanhoe great so gets in to my midfield. My next choice is from a similar era and it’s Ray Wearmouth. We have the “Cryuff turn”, the “Ronaldo step over” but could they do a Ray “foot on the ball 180 spin” on Hood Park, well ok yes they probably could but we used to delight in watching Ray perform his signature move in Ivanhoe colours. The only Ivanhoe player to play in The World Cup (no really, ask Daz) means he has to get in. Sheer class and a good lad too. My next selection is slightly more contemporary and it’s Richard Boddice. I still can’t believe he’s retired he was playing so long. Midfielders in Leicestershire must be delighted to see the back of Rich. He was an utter terrier of a player never giving his opponents a minute’s peace. Always sticking a toe in & nicking the ball or being one step ahead & intercepting a pass or through ball. He came up with goals too and was pivotal in many successful North Leicestershire League campaigns and our move into The Senior League. Bang up to date with my final selection of Chris Nettel. Chris started as a striker before moving into his central midfield slot where he has been a fixture for many years. He started in The North Leicestershire League and has raised his own game to every level the club has progressed through since. Great leadership qualities made him our obvious Captain and he has certainly inspired and led the team and club from the front in that time. He has also scored some spectacular and vital goals too and let’s hope he can continue to do that for many seasons to come. Sting. Simply a club legend. Finally, many of you will know that it’s 10 years today that Paul Foster passed away. “Fogger” was our Reserve team manager at the time and he was a huge part of Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club, a great friend of mine and many others here today. It’s safe to say that much of the club’s success over the last 10 years has been achieved from foundations and principles that Fogger helped to promote within the club and we will raise a glass to his memory today. A great guy and sadly missed. Enjoy the game. Dave Morris Club President

ASHBY IVANHOE FC SUPPORTERS CLUB A warm welcome to everyone here today for Ivanhoe’s East Midlands Counties League match against Kimberley Miners Welfare here at the NFU Sports Ground. Last Saturday’s 1st team match ended in a 1-1 draw away at Holbrook Sports in the Derbyshire Dales and while a point away from home is ok we were disappointed not to come away with all 3 points against a side reduced to 10 men and after a brilliant home win against table toppers St Andrews we face 9th placed Kimberley Miners Welfare here at the NFU and my prediction is for Ivanhoe to win 3-1. By the way can I say that our ground is a little gem compared to some that we have visited this year. Good luck to all our teams this weekend and don’t forget if you have any comments regarding the club please e-mail me at mh.buckley@btinternet.com Mick Buckley Supporters Club Chairman

THE OPPOSITION KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE Kimberley Miners Welfare Football Club was formed in 1926, one year after the opening of the Miners Welfare. The early years were spent playing at the Mill Field, approx ½ mile North of Digby Street. In 1932 Kimberley MW moved to the new recreation ground, Digby Street, situated adjacent to Digby Colliery and its cricket ground. Initially, Digby Street was solely a playing field with teams changing in Tommy Bird’s (pronounced Tommy Bod’s, in the local dialect) front room. It was a lengthy walk, for players and officials to Digby Street, because Tommy lived in a house supplied for workers, on site, at the Giltbrook Leather Works. In the late 1950s, changing facilities moved, to the Miners Welfare Bowling Alley underneath the building, which meant an even longer walk for players and officials. Kimberley MW have played at Digby Street for 81 years but, it hasn’t been continuous. The club played at the Wolsey Sports Ground for one season, 1974/75 (situated where Sainsbury’s Car Park now is, in Kimberley Town Centre), because the construction of the new A610 Eastwood & Kimberley Bypass took away part of the ground and made it unusable. 1982 was a key year in the history of the club as the present chairman Neil Johnson took on the role of chairman from his father. It wasn’t until the 1995/6 season that changing facilities were provided on the ground. A £7,500 grant from the National Lottery, and an equivalent generous donation from Chairman Neil Johnson, enabled the club to buy, transport and erect, the unwanted changing rooms from Calverton Cricket Club. This was around the time of the clubs most successful period on the pitch under the leadership of Paul Horry Kimberley won all 4 trophies available to them. Paul Horry left and was replaced on a caretaker basis by Steve Hobster. Don Munn took charger before the appointment of George Hulley. The joint management of Alf Stacey & Steve Towle took charge in the early 2000s. The pair resigned a few years later when Kimberley then turned back to George Hulley who remained in charge until 2014 being replaced by present manager Paul Rawden. In 2012 Kimberley MW were given use of The Stag Ground former home of the defunct Kimberley Town and the task of restoring the ground with the superb relationship of Kimberley Town Council is well underway with hundreds of man hours put in the town of Kimberley finally have a Step 6 club and ground to be proud of. The clubs record crowd was 389 in a Notts Senior League game against Keyworth United in April 2012 at Digby Street. The record crowd at The Stag Ground for a Welfare game is 116.

ASHBY IVANHOE FC CLUB HISTORY Ashby Ivanhoe Football Club was founded in 1948 and play their home matches at the NFU Sports Ground, Lower Packington Road, Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire. This is the clubs new home from the beginning of the 2012/2013 season. Since being founded in 1948 up until the end of the 2011/2012 season the clubs previous home was at Hood Park also in Ashby de la Zouch. The club currently consists of three adult teams and a youth team. The first team play in the East Midlands Counties League, with the Reserves in the Leicestershire Senior League Division One. In the 2008/2009 season the club formed a Youth Team (Under 18’s) side who play in the Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth League on Wednesday nights. A Sunday team was re-introduced for the 2012/2013 season and they play in the Burton Sunday League Division Two. The club also has 11 junior sides ranging from Under 9’s through to Under 17’s who play in the Burton Junior Football League, Tamworth Junior Football League and the Derby City League. The junior section came after the club merged with the David Hunt Soccer School at the beginning of the 20092010 season. In February 2004, Ashby Ivanhoe became an FA Charter Standard football club. The club is very ambitious and has plans to progress further up the league pyramid system. The club is run by an experienced management team and enjoys the support of some very prestigious commercial partners. Ashby Ivanhoe had one of their most successful seasons in 2010/11 as they completed a league and cup double by winning the Leicestershire Senior League by nine points and also lifted the Coalville Charity Cup for the very first time after producing a superb second half comeback to beat Bardon Hill 3-2 in the final. They have also reached successive Leicestershire Senior Cup finals in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 but had to settle for runners-up on both occasions losing 3-1, firstly to Ibstock United and then Aylestone Park. The 2013/2014 season saw the first team achieve a long-term ambition as they won promotion into the Step 6 East Midlands Counties League for the 2014/2015 season after finishing third place in the Leicestershire Senior League. It was a close title race with the top three all finishing level on points with Ashby third on goal difference. The Reserves were also promoted to the Leicestershire Senior League Division One.
