PHOTOS OF ASHBY

New Photos of Ashby Within and around Ashby we have a number of historic buildings and picturesque areas captured regularly by professional and amateur photographers alike. Whether it’s Ashby Castle, the Bath Grounds, St Helen’s Church or the Loudoun Memorial. New Photos of Ashby-De-La-Zouch is a Facebook group set up to celebrate all of the above but also the everyday lanes, mews, doorways and views we take for granted but which make Ashby what it is. It can be as simple as the view up Market Street on a busy Saturday, the autumn leaves as you walk through St Helen’s churchyard or the fun of local events such as Jim’s Tractor Run, the Ashby Santa Fun Run or the Christmas Market - all that the residents here enjoy about Ashby. Photos added by members range from snapshots taken on their phone to edited images polished to perfection. It’s often the most ordinary spots you pass by every day which capture your attention when posted from somebody else’s view. Here at Ashby Life we are big fans of the group and several of the images shared have been used as front covers. Many group members are also past residents of Ashby who are keen to reminisce and to see how the town looks today and is developing and evolving. The group has over 2,600 members at present and continues to grow. To join simply search for New Photos of Ashby-De-La-Zouch on Facebook and request to join the group. It’s a great way of viewing our town from a whole new perspective and appreciating all it has to offer. It may even encourage you to get out there and take some photos to share yourself.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Glitz & Glam Charity Ball Local residents; Sarah Hale and her Mum, Trish Callen, are organising a ‘Glitz & Glam Charity Ball’ so don your sparkly dress or smart suit and get ready for an evening of dancing, dinner and lots of fun! The ball will take place on Saturday 17th November at The Lyric Rooms in Ashby with all funds raised going to support two amazingly important charities: MIND (www.mind.org.uk) and MND (www.mndassociation.org) Both causes are very personal to Sarah as her sister Louise tragically took her own life after a long battle with depression and her Aunt; Lynne is suffering with Motor Neurones Disease. MIND have been working tirelessly for over 70 years to provide advice and support for anyone experiencing a mental health problem whilst campaigning to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. Every year, one in four of us will experience a mental health problem MIND are here to help, listen and advise. The Motor Neurone Disease Association has a key focus to raise awareness and understanding of motor neurone disease (MND). Alongside this, the Association is fighting to improve care and support for people living with MND and their families as well as funding research into new treatments and hopefully a cure. The Ball is a way for Sarah and Trish to raise awareness of both charities and Tickets cost £38 which includes a welcome drink along with a three course dinner. The event promises to be hugely popular so don’t all that they do but ultimately the miss out and make sure to buy your tickets today. goal is to raise as much money Call Sarah on 07943 584455 or email sarah.callen@hotmail.co.uk as possible to support them. 12

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

The importance of… our next play! Ashby Venture Theatre’s next performance will be The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Described as a ‘trivial comedy for serious people’ the farcical play is packed with sarcasm, wit and wisdom. The play centres around John and Algernon both frequent partakers of ‘bunburying’, a hobby where they invent alternative personas to escape their dull everyday responsibilities. Chaos ensues as their respective love interests Gwendolyn and Cecily find they are not engaged to who they think! Set and written in the late 19th century the play was a contrast to most theatre at the time which highlighted serious political issues. Wilde makes a mockery of Victorian traditions, particularly marriage and the pursuit of love, topics still relevant today. The timeless humour has helped The Importance of being Earnest become Wilde’s most popular and well known play. The play has even been adapted for film at least three times, most recently in 2002 starring Colin Firth and Rupert Everett.

MONEY MATTERS

WARNING! YOUR STATE PENSION FORECAST AND RECORDS

could be wrong!

In recent press articles it has been highlighted that your State Pension forecast is not ‘guaranteed’ according to the Government’s Department for Work and Pensions. An accurate figure will only be available when they have completed working on the data. So, should we be concerned? Well ‘Yes’ when you consider just what an important part your State Pension payment plays within planning your retirement - accuracy is vital. The format for calculating the state pension changed in April 2016. Fortunately, gaining access to information about your state pension has been improved. You can now access your information online through the ‘Government Gateway’. If you already deal with your own tax returns, you will have registered for this online service anyway and can access the information through the same portal. If you haven’t already registered, don’t worry, it’s an easy process to register to access your information. Go to www.gateway.gov.uk/ However, if you’d prefer not to use the internet, you can still access your information using a BR19 form and send a request through the post. You can find a link to the BR19 form by searching ‘BR19 form’ on the Government web site. One of the key rule changes which took effect in April 2016 was the qualifying years of contributions for maximum benefits. It was increased from 30 to 35 years. But even with 35 years’ contributions, not everyone will get the publicised headline basic rate of £155.65 per week - some may receive less and some could receive more. This is why it is vital to check that the data held by the Department for Work & Pensions is correct – not only so that you have an accurate idea of what your benefit will be but to ensure the correct National Insurance contributions have been recorded. So why could the information be incorrect? The new State Pension still includes information 20

Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk

Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd relating to Contracting In or Out of benefits, Graduated Pensions and even credits for those who could not work but may have been claiming certain Statutory Benefits – it’s complicated, so mistakes are made but, the sooner the mistake is identified, the sooner it can be rectified. The good news is that if you find the information held on file is incorrect, you can request a full ‘manual calculation’ which can take 5 or 6 weeks to complete. It’s certainly worthwhile checking as the State Pension increases each year and, as a rule, we are all living longer too so having an accurate figure will help you plan for your retirement. Ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure you get what is rightfully yours as no one will be checking on your behalf unless you have instructed an agent to do so. Our advice is to check the information is correct now to avoid issues later.

AMTG NEWS

It’s all coming together very nicely Mr Higgins! If you haven’t already got your tickets for My Fair Lady there is still time – visit amtg.org.uk or phone us on 07527 228945 – and there is no better way to enjoy fantastic musical theatre at its best than to come and see AMTG at Repton School from 10th to14th April.

achieved, so professionally, in the six short months since we began preparing this fabulous show. As with any production, we will all be sad to say goodbye to Higgins, Eliza et al, but then we can start all over again with the next show, which will be announced in the My Fair Lady programme!

In a few days our Stage Team will be taking delivery of thepresents scenery, furnishings and props, and our Sound and Lighting team will be rigging up the 400 Hall Theatre ready for the run. The orchestra will be rehearsing, and everyone involved in the show will be buzzing. For six performances we will be taking our audiences back to Edwardian London, with all the glamour of presents Ascot, the humour and wit of Covent Garden, and the splendour of an Embassy Ball.

We are blessed by a huge number of supporters and sponsors who help us bring a show to the stage, and amongst these is the team at Ashby Life – we are grateful to everyone for their continuing involvement.

Crucial to the success of any show is of course the audience, and we are so looking forward to welcoming everyone to see what we have

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC

Hey, Mums to be!

Get active and stay active safely So maybe you are a regular gym visitor or participate in classes or sports or maybe you have been thinking of getting active. What if then you discover you are pregnant?

Do you feel comfortable to continue to exercise? Do you have worries or not know what you can or can’t do? In a world where we are bombarded by information, sometimes it can be difficult to navigate your way through all the advice on offer regarding your expected new arrival, their health, development and well-being. Throw into that those potential early feelings of nausea, fatigue and emotional changes and it comes as no surprise that many women can see pregnancy as a time to simply stop exercising. We are told that keeping moving and active is “good for you” during our lives for a whole host of reasons. After all exercise isn’t just about helping with weight management or muscle gain. Evidence suggests exercise can reduce your risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes as well as having a positive impact on your mood and confidence. When it comes to exercise during pregnancy there are huge additional benefits in keeping active both as you prepare for birth and in relation to your post-natal recovery. For example, did you know that moderate levels of exercise can help lessen back ache during pregnancy, improve posture, and decrease stress and anxiety? Keeping active can boost your energy levels and actually help with your ability to cope with labour and delivery! I can’t promise pain free but effectively training your body can help speed things up! Plus, continuing to exercise throughout pregnancy also helps set you up for a faster post-natal recovery and an easier transition into regaining your confidence with fitness once you have had your baby.

Understanding these feelings both from a personal and professional perspective is what drives me as a specialist pre and post-natal personal trainer. It is so empowering to provide women with the information, motivation, support and encouragement that they need to in order to experience just some of the benefits that exercise during pregnancy can bring.

It is understandable that you may feel worried about what you can do safely during pregnancy, fearful of causing harm. Ladies also say to me it can be difficult, when you feel the size of a house, with aches and pains and your ‘get up and go’ truly gone, to squeeze into work out gear and go and exercise in a room full of fit people!

So if you are pregnant and want to keep active or start exercise in a supportive, friendly and motivating setting, why not come and try our Mum to Be Fit class here at Fitness Republic, where you can meet up with other mums to be in the local area, share experiences and train together in an encouraging and positive environment. ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE

Unlocking Your Stories We always enjoy stories here at St Helen’s Heritage Centre. We especially love to hear the stories of our church and town, and so in April, on Saturday 14th, we are having a day dedicated to ‘unlocking your stories’. We want to hear about your connections to St Helen’s Church and its heritage: Were your parents married here? Were their parents christened here? Was Great Uncle Bill a bell-ringer? Bring your photos, learn about how to investigate your family history, and meet some characters with a story to tell, including a Civil War soldier and a plague woman! One of the many fascinating stories at St Helen’s is our unique sundial, which was rediscovered and renovated in 2000 as a Millennium Project. You may have missed it but this hidden gem, believed to be the oldest sundial of its kind in the UK, is well worth seeking out. And we will be celebrating it for a whole day here at the Heritage Centre, with

the second of this year’s Easter Family Activity days during the Easter holidays (the first being a chance to play with ‘Stained glass and Heraldry’ on 26th March). So, between 10.30am to 4pm on Wednesday 4th April, we invite you to bring the children along to make their own sundials and sand timers. Come and join in this memorable day and we’re sure you’ll have a tale to tell.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy of delivering the

highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ashby, Smisby, Blackfordbury, Ibstock, Ravenstone,

Packington & Normaton areas and manager Martyn Kemp agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BODY MATTERS

Shocking News! Shock Wave Therapy (SWT) has had a lot of positive press recently - international results show an overall success rate of 77% for some chronic conditions that are often a challenge to cure with traditional therapy. SWT involves a hand held device that has a projectile in it that strikes an applicator at high speed and relatively high frequency to create a shock wave through the tissue. This causes cavitation bubbles to be formed in the tissue and, in turn, has been found to accelerate the healing process in certain chronic conditions. Problems such as plantar fasciitis in the heel, shoulder tendon conditions, tennis elbow, golfers elbow and patellar tendon conditions (knee) respond very well and can often be totally cured with SWT. This form of treatment lasts approximately 10 minutes and usually requires between 4 & 6 sessions to have good effect, but following as few as 2 sessions many

Pathfinding Therapy

people start to experience significant pain relief. SWT has a bright future in injury management and although a rarity in Midlands based therapy practices, some have decided that its proven benefits are of clear value. ProPhysio have decided to invest in this exciting new piece of equipment, so should you be suffering with any of the conditions mentioned and would like to learn more about what SWT has to offer, please contact Darrin at ProPhysio on 01530 588557

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Are you new to the town? Are you interested in Ashby de la Zouch and how it came to be; its hidden histories, why there is a castle, why there was a canal, a tramway and a spa? Visit us to find out more and help spread the word. If you have a couple of hours or so a fortnight to spare and would like to be involved in supporting this tremendous asset to the town, please get in touch with us on 01530 560090. You will be warmly welcomed. We are pleased to receive the Betty and John Halsall collection, relating to Ashby musical operatic groups – the Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Ashby Operatic Society and the Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group – all from 1962 to the present day. Further to last month’s issue, we now have five large sales ledgers of Stevenson and Barratt estate agents acquisitions from the 1920s to the 1980s, covering private homes, businesses, farms etc. Yours might be among them! The next temporary exhibition in April and May features paintings by local artist, Julie Barnett. WHAT’S ON FOR FAMILIES

Calke Abbey

What’s on for

families

Now that the clocks have gone back we are officially in Springtime and we can look forward to longer lighter days and hopefully some warmer weather. It’s the perfect time of year to head outdoors and blow away the cobwebs but where to go? We’ve rounded up our favourite local places but let us know where you go too……..

Hicks Lodge You can explore Hicks Lodge on foot or on bike. There are plenty of trails to choose from for varying abilities and The Highway Rat trail too for £3 from the café. Cyclists from beginners to the more confident can ride around the site and explore the young woodland. The adventure play area is conveniently located by the visitors centre and café too. Visit www.forestry.gov.uk/hickslodge for more information.

Ashby Bath Grounds Perfect for kicking a ball around, flying a kite on a windy day or enjoying an alfresco picnic if the weather allows. An added bonus is leaving the car at home and walking along (if you live in Ashby of course).

After the slumber of winter the gardens at Calke Abbey are waking up and you can watch the gardeners at work. The gardens are open every day from 10am until 5pm. There is over 600 acres of parkland to explore by joining one of the guided walks or downloading your own trail from the website at: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/calke-abbey/ Don’t forget the newly extended Tramway trail which is perfect for cycling.’

Staunton Harold Reservoir A wildlife habitat offering an adventure playground, fishing, bird watching, cycling, and sailing at the sailing club, as well as countryside walks for those who want to explore. The visitor centre includes an information room and the café overlooks the adventure playground with adjoining picnic tables. Car parking fees apply. Please visit www.visitnationalforest.co.uk for more information.

Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park The often overlooked Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park have a lot to offer. There is a large child friendly play and picnic area with woodland paths that take you into the woods or wander along the canal tow path for a great walk. The Museum is open during the school holidays from Tuesday to Sunday and every weekend from 11am to 4pm. You can also purchase boat trip tickets from here or a day’s fishing. See www.moirafurnace.org for details. Our What’s On page at www.ashbylife.co.uk has details of local events and ideas for many more family days out. Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020

DON’T LEAVE YOUR LOVED ONES FACING FINANCIAL RUIN Many people take out a life policy, perhaps when they take out a mortgage, put it away in a drawer and don’t think any more about it. This can be a mistake, as the level of cover you took out a few years back may now not be enough to cover your current situation, and you could risk leaving your loved ones facing major financial difficulties if you were to die.

to have a reasonable standard of living if you were to die.

Figures from a major insurer show that 40% of Britons only have enough life insurance in place to cover their mortgagei, which could result in financial strain on their families, as they would still have to meet all their other household bills and expenses.

When they have a growing family to provide for, many people also opt to take out critical illness insurance. This is designed to pay out a tax-free lump sum in the event of a diagnosis of a serious illness (as defined in the policy). Income protection cover can also be appropriate, as it would pay out a monthly income, tax-free, if you were unable to work due to an illness or injury. Protection policies can safeguard your finances, your home and your family in the event of incapacity, a serious illness, accident or death.

REGULAR REVIEWS MATTER Everyone should think about reviewing their life insurance cover on a regular basis, especially if they’ve experienced a major life event like starting a family. Having cover just to pay off your mortgage might have sufficed before you had the added responsibility of being a parent, but now you’ll want to ensure there’s sufficient insurance in place not only to pay off your mortgage, but also to provide additional funds to ensure your loved ones could continue

At DGS we can help make sure that as your life changes, your cover changes to match your circumstances. We take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most cost-effective way. For a free review of your current financial situation, please contact Ian Staley, Independent Financial Adviser on 01530 567020. i Direct Line 2017

BEAUTY TIPS

Spring Clean Your Beauty Routine It’s not just homes that benefit from a good ol’ spring clean… Ditch old makeup and skincare products Most of us are guilty of holding onto favourite cosmetics way longer than we should do. While makeup doesn’t have a fixed use-by date as such, it does start to degrade once it’s been exposed to air and sunlight. If you check the packaging of any skincare or cosmetic product, you’ll find the PAO symbol. This shows the ‘period after opening’ that the product needs to be used within. In most cases, it’s six or 12 months. Products that come into direct contact with your skin, such as a lipstick, or a moisturiser that you scoop out of the jar with a finger, are particularly virulent breeding grounds for bacteria. So have a good sort through and ditch anything that’s been open longer than its PAO. It’s also worth having a bit of a declutter at the same time. Are you ever going to wear that lurid purple eyeshadow? If you want products that will last longer, check the PAO before you buy. In general, pump action lotions will last longer than those in jars, as the lotion comes into less contact with oxygen and light. Clean makeup brushes Makeup brushes and cases can get decidedly grubby, so it’s a good idea to give them a gentle clean on a regular basis. Most cosmetic bags can be washed by hand, using a mild detergent. Brushes can be cleaned with face wash, baby shampoo or a mild soap. Soap is probably the easiest. Just swirl the brush gently on wet soap to create lather, use your fingers to massage the bristles, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and leave it to dry.

If your old brushes are past the point of revival, the Nellie Make Up Brush Set from Oliver Bonas is worth considering. For £38, you get five different types of brushes and a handy mirror, all housed in a stylish pink case. Try something new It’s easy to get stuck in a perfume rut, wearing the same fragrance year after year. Or worse, wearing a fragrance you’ve been given as a gift but aren’t in love with. Fragrance doesn’t have to be expensive. Marks and Spencer’s Island Escape Eau De Toilette is £16 for a 95ml bottle. For £18 you can have the giftset, which includes a full size fragrance and body lotion. Island Escape is a light, citrusy fragrance, with notes of bergamot, pear and rose, mixed with a hint of sea salt, so it’s perfect for spring and summer. Slap on the SPF Ideally, we should protect our skin from the sun every day, rain or shine. The easiest way to take care of your face is by choosing a moisturiser with a high SPF rating. Nspa Expert Daily Rejuvenate Cream has an SPF of 30 and contains active ingredients such as Crocus Chrysanthus Bulb extract, which has been proven to improve the appearance of ageing skin. What’s more, the cream costs just £10 in ASDA. It’s ideal for spring, but come summer you’ll need a sun lotion that you can reapply throughout the day.

HEALTH TIPS

The Benefits of

Pregnancy Massage

Our panel of local experts continues to grow and this month we welcome Anna from Beauty @ the Annex with her advice on the many benefits of pregnancy massage. Anna has been trained and working for over 35 years in the beauty industry. Four years ago she bought a barn in the hamlet of Stretton en le field with space for providing treatments in the quiet of a relaxed rural atmosphere. As well as offering a wide range of beauty treatments Anna has also recently successfully completed an advanced course in pregnancy massage. Here she shares some of her new knowledge. Pregnancy is a wonderful time for a woman, but with the joys of a new baby’s development, comes many changes to the mother’s body putting pressure on joints, ligaments and organs, often causing discomfort and pain. Pregnancy massage has tremendous benefits. It can alleviate aches and pains and other common health problems releasing ‘feel good’ endorphins by the mother during the massage which are also passed on to the baby. This beneficial massage is carried out in a calm, relaxing environment and is complimentary to maternity care.

• Releases muscular tension of the upper back, shoulders, lower back and hips

• Helps lower or keep blood pressure balanced • Induces deep relaxation and aids peaceful sleep • Helps with leg swelling and cramps • Improves breathing during pregnancy and birth With all of these benefits you have the perfect excuse to put your feet up and relax ladies!’ A ‘Mums to Be’ massage treatment with Anna costs £40 for an hour. A WALK IN THE FOREST supplied by Liz Roberts

Melbourne Parklands

Noon Column

This, our third of the six carved noon columns, is a smooth and elegant structure carved out of English oak. The column is situated within the Staunton Harold Estate and our circular walk takes us down part of the driveway to this lovely estate before heading out towards Lount on a farm track. Looping around we return via a hard path that winds down through young woodland to reach the site of the noon column. This is a shortened version of the Staunton Harold/ Lount Loop walk featured in Walks for all in the Heart of the Forest. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for your walk - if you fancy refreshments afterwards you can choose from the tea rooms within the garden centre or those at the Ferrers Centre.

1

The starting point for this walk is the visitors car park in the Staunton Harold estate - this is situated between the garden centre and the entrance to the woodland paths. Parking is usually free in the week but there is a charge at weekends. Sat nav users should use the postcode LE65 1RT.

2

After parking leave the visitors car park by the main entrance and turn left onto the one way section of the estate driveway. Follow the road down, passing by the grounds and buildings of Staunton Harold Hall on your your left until you reach the point where the driveway bends sharply to the left. Here you will see the entrance to a farm track immediately ahead of you. Go through the wooden gate with the footpath marker beside it and walk straight ahead, passing fields and woodland, until the track forks.

3

4 Take the right hand fork and very soon after this turn onto a path leading off to the right. Follow this path up, passing by Dog Kennel Barn, until you come to a gateway on your right that gives access to a hard path through the young woodland. Pass through the gate and follow the path down past Emily Jane’s Wood. Keep straight ahead on this path for quite some time (ignore a fork that comes in from the left). The path leads slowly downhill past young trees and grassy areas. You will pass by a sign for the Walnut Research Area 2, cross over a small stream and then go over a wooden bridge. After crossing the bridge look out for a green sign for Mixed Maple Woodland on your left - when you reach this sign turn right onto the grass. Walk up the grass for a short way and you will arrive at the noon column. If the weather has been wet I’d advise retracing your steps after you’ve seen the noon column and following the hard path down to the gateway at its end. In dry weather you can walk just past the noon column and then turn left onto a narrow grass path that goes over a ditch and across the grass to reach the same point. Go through the gate and across the end of a field (which may have sheep grazing in it) to the gate leading back onto the driveway opposite the car park. All walks are checked before publication but please be aware that paths may change over time and with the seasons.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

Don’t be foolish this April..! So will you fall for an April fool prank this year? In this country we seem to love a joke at someone else’s expense. The delightful tradition of being pranked by someone, looking silly and then being called an ‘April fool’. In the bible the ‘fool’ label is handed out a few times also. However unlike the April fool’s pranks, these examples seem to be when people DO know what they’re doing. For example, the Psalmist writes that ‘the fool has said in his heart that there is no God’. So the term ‘fool’ here is describing someone actively disregarding the existence of God despite the overwhelming evidence for God in His creation and through His message in the bible. If we think we can ignore the reality of God’s existence, His warnings about life and death

82

and the need for Him in our lives, perhaps we also risk being ‘a fool’. We can’t claim ignorance or innocence, the message is clear and easily accessible to all. While we all may have been caught unawares by the odd April fool prank, fortunately we can do something to actively avoid being labelled a ‘fool’ in God’s eyes. It’s all there for us in the bible; who God is; what He’s promised; how He can help; what the future holds. Surely we’d be crazy (perhaps even foolish?) not to at least look at what He has to say? Useful Bible passage to look up: Psalm ch14 v1. Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby. www.ashbychurch.co.uk

IN YOUR GARDEN

Ancient Oaks and Robin Hood Calke Abbey boasts oak trees over 600 years old. You can observe these ancient trees by walking in Calke Park on any day of the year. ‘The Old Man’ of Calke is an oak tree estimated by the National Trust to be between 700 and 1000 years old. The Park has over 200 huge ancient oaks trees and the ‘pink walk’ (set out in the walking guide) is a riverside walk especially mapped out to show off the range of trees including ‘The Old Man’. Arguably one of the most famous locations for an ancient oak tree is about 30 miles away at Sherwood Forest. Indeed the largest ancient oak here is called ‘The Major Oak’ named after a 19th century archaeologist who surveyed trees in Sherwood Forest. This however is not the reason for the tree’s fame: it is of course because it was said to have sheltered Robin Hood and his Merry Men from the Sherriff of Nottingham in a secret hollow in the trunk of the tree. It is said The Major Oak’s longevity was due to it being planted away from the completion of other trees, so that it did not have to compete with other trees for nutrients and light, and it grew slowly and steadily, in a rather poor acid soil. Presently the old branches are propped up and it is fenced off to protect thousands of feet causing compaction in the soil around its roots. Many large old oaks have big hollows in their trunks but a hollow tree can still be healthy and

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 strong. The decaying wood within the hollow is a source of food and shelter for many creatures. In 2014 The Major Oak was awarded England’s Tree of the Year. The Major Oak has a girth of over 10meters and its branches spread 28 meters and it is estimated to weigh 23 tonnes. It is said to be 800-100 years old and is one of nearly a thousand ancient oaks within Sherwood Forest. Planting of oak trees is still widespread and locally within the National Forest oak trees were planted as part of the creation of new native and indigenous woodlands. Oak trees are wonderful for supporting the environment. Fungus, birds, insects and toads are among the creatures that house themselves with in oak tree. Actually a single mature oak is said to support over 250 species of wildlife and forms. An oak takes about 300 years growing, 300 years resting and 300 years declining. The trees actually shrink after about 500 years and become squatter, probably a strategy to cope with strong winds. Acorns and oak trees are said to be a symbol of longevity, humble beginnings, patience, faith and power. Although fantastic in parkland setting and large gardens, these trees are not appropriate for a small modern garden and should be planted at least 10 meters from a house, and also consider the shade you create by planting and don’t plant in such a way as to block out your neighbours light.

PET’S CORNER

Protecting your pets in the garden If you’re enjoying the warmer weather this springtime, and spending more time in the garden with your pet, here are a few tips to keep both cats and dogs safe and well, and avoid any urgent visits to the vet. Seasonal plants Some spring bulbs and plants can be poisonous to dogs and cats. Daffodils, in particular, cause problems if ingested, but other plants such as tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and clematis are also toxic. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, and lethargy, potentially leading to dehydration and convulsions. In cases where the most poisonous plants have been consumed, the after-effects may be seen within 15 minutes. Chocolate Easter eggs Chocolate contains theobromine, which is highly toxic to your dog or cat. Although dark chocolate contains the most theobromine, the levels in milk chocolate are also sufficient to cause serious health problems.

It’s advisable to consult your vet as a matter of urgency if you know that your pet has consumed chocolate – symptoms include rapid breathing, hyperactivity, seizures, vomiting and diarrhoea. Slug and snail pellets As spring is ‘slug season’, you may be tempted to use slug pellets to control this problem in your garden. Dogs and cats tend to find slug pellets tasty, however, and as many brands contain a poisonous substance called metaldehyde, your pet’s health is at serious and immediate risk after ingestion. Look out for symptoms such as muscle spasms, seizures and lack of coordination, and contact your vet as a matter of urgency.

ON THE BEAT

Phantom debt fraud Action Fraud has recently experienced an increase in the number of calls to members of the public by fraudsters requesting payments for a “phantom” debt. The fraud involves being cold-called by someone purporting to be a debt collector, bailiff or other type of enforcement agent. The fraudster may claim to be working under instruction of a court, business or other body and suggest they are recovering funds for a non-existent debt. The fraudsters are requesting payment, sometimes by bank transfer and if refused, they threaten to visit homes or workplaces in order to recover the supposed debt that is owed. In some cases, the victim is also threatened with arrest. From the reports Action Fraud has received, this type of fraud is presently occurring throughout the UK. It is important to recognise that there are key differences between the various entities who seek to settle debts or outstanding fees in England and Wales. These differences range from the type of debt they will enforce to the legal powers they possess. To learn more, please take a look at some of the helpful information and links on the Step Change Debt Charity website; https://www.stepchange.org/ debt-info/debt-collection/bailiffs-and-debt-collectorsdifferences.aspx Protect Yourself • Make vigorous checks if you ever get a cold call. Bailiffs for example, should always be able to provide you with a case number and warrant number, along with their name and the court they are calling from; make a note of all details provided to you. • If you receive a visit from a bailiff, they must always identify themselves as a Court Bailiff at the earliest possible opportunity. Ask to see their identity card which they must carry to prove who they are, this card shows their photograph and identity number. They will also carry the physical warrant showing the debt and endorsed with a court seal. • If you work for a business and receive a call or visit, be sure to speak with your manager or business owner first. Never pay the debts yourself on behalf of the business you work for; some fraudsters have suggested employees make payment suggesting

102

they can then be reimbursed by their employer when in reality the debt is non-existent. • Exercise caution believing someone is genuine because you’ve found something on the internet; fraudsters could easily create fake online profiles to make you believe them. • Double check with the court, company or public body they claim to work for to confirm whether the call is legitimate; if you use a landline make sure you hear the dialling tone prior to dialling as the caller could still be on the line and you could potentially speak to the fraudster(s) to confirm the non-existent debt. Also be sure to independently search for a telephone number to call; never use a number provided by the caller without carrying out your own research. • Do not feel rushed or intimidated to make a decision based on a phone call. Take five and listen to your instincts. • If you know you have a debt, keep in regular contact with your creditor and be sure to establish the debt type at the earliest opportunity if you are not aware. This will help you to understand who might be in contact with you regarding any repayments or arrears. You can report suspicious calls like these to Action Fraud by visiting www.actionfaud.police.uk, or by calling 0300 123 2040. Year end tax planning

With the end of the tax year looming there is still time to save tax for 2017/18. Matters to consider. Make full use of your ISA allowance ISAs are a useful tax free way to save.

Take advantage of capital allowances By making the most of capital allowances, businesses may be able to write off the costs of capital assets against taxable profits. The Annual Investment Allowance allows businesses to claim a deduction of up to £200,000 of the year’s investment in plant and machinery (excluding cars).

Build a tax efficient retirement plan Pension contributions must be paid on or before 5 April 2018 for them to be utilised against 2017/18 income.

BOOK REVIEWS

Be happy with a book Whether you love curling up with a psychological thriller or prefer biographies, enjoy flicking through a cookbook or need business advice, we’ve got just the book to keep you and your e-reader happy. Anything You Do Say Gillian McAllister A split second decision has lasting implications for the protagonist in this tense psychological thriller. Late at night, believing that she’s being followed, Joanna lashes out, pushing her pursuer down a set of concrete steps. Does she call an ambulance, or walk away? Both scenarios are then explored. Ingenious, original and fast-paced, this is perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Girl on a Train.

Ultimate Fit Food Gordon Ramsey Planning to get a bit fitter before the summer? Gordon Ramsey’s latest book might help. It’s split into three sections, each of which offers a range of dishes to promote general wellbeing, achieve weight loss or provide fuel for work-outs. There are recipes for everything from healthy snacks and breakfasts to impressive main courses, and plenty of treats are included too. The emphasis is on dishes so delicious you’ll almost forget they’re good for you.

How Not To Be a Boy Robert Webb Actor and comedian Robert Webb has turned his hand to writing, with great success. How Not To Be a Boy is part biography, part reflection on the expectations that are put on boys and men to act a certain way. Webb reveals his grief at losing his mother and his difficult relationship with his father, and ruminates on how trying to ‘act like a man’ has had a negative effect on his life. Through it all, Webb writes with his trademark humour, taking the reader from laughing out loud to blinking back tears in moments.

The Paying Guests Sarah Waters It’s 1922, but the roaring twenties have yet to reach the quiet corner of London where Frances and her mother live. Frances has resigned herself to a life spent looking after the family home, but the arrival of lodgers Lilian and Leonard Barber reawakens her life, energy and passions. Paying Guests was published in 2014 and was named ‘Fiction Book of the Year’ by The Sunday Times, for good reason. A modern classic, it’s beautifully written, with believably flawed characters, plot twists and a building tension that’ll keep you reading ‘just one more chapter’ until late into the night.

The History of Bees Maja Lunde The History of Bees tells the stories of three people, all connected by bees. In 1851, William is attempting to build a revolutionary beehive to bring honour and fame to his family. In 2007, George is struggling to keep the family bee farm going. Almost 100 years later, Tao is enjoying a rare day off from her job hand-pollinating fruit trees, when her son is taken seriously ill. The History of Bees was a surprise international bestseller last year and is ideal for fans of dystopian fiction.

LEMON MASCARPONE

Creams

S E RV

Read ES 4 y in minu 15 tes

These quick and easy desserts make a delicious sweet treat for any occasion. Add the zest of 1 lemon to the cream mixture for an extra citrus kick.

To make white chocolate curls, run a swivel-bladed vegetable peeler along the side of a bar of good quality white chocolate. YOU WILL NEED:

Juice of 2 large lemons 50g caster sugar l 250g tub mascarpone cheese

200ml double cream 10 sponge fingers l 2 tbsp white chocolate curls, to decorate

l

l

GET STARTED

1. Mix the lemon juice and sugar in a bowl and 4. Dip four of the sponge fingers in some of the stir until the sugar has dissolved.

2. Place the mascarpone in a large mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until soft and smooth. Gradually beat in half the lemon sugar mixture, beating well after each addition.

3. In a separate bowl, whip the cream until softly peaking. Gently fold the cream into the lemon mascarpone mixture. If it is a little too firm, fold in 2-3 tbsp of milk or single cream. 118

remaining lemon and sugar mixture then arrange in the base of four glass serving dishes, breaking to fit if necessary. Spoon half the mascarpone cream mixture on top.

5. Repeat the layers once more using the rest of the sponge fingers, lemon sugar mixture and lemon mascarpone cream. Scatter the white chocolate curls over the top. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge for 2-3 hours before serving.

CHESS PUZZLE

White to play and mate in 7 There are chess players of all strengths, from beginner to grandmaster. How do you become a grandmaster? Play a lot, improve a lot, then beat other grandmasters. In this position it’s White to play and mate in 7. It’s from Edward Lasker v George A Thomas, London, 1912. A grandmaster would probably find the winning sequence in under a minute. Some club players would see the first move but not be able to calculate the other 6 moves. You’re allowed to set this up and move the pieces until you find the mate. Good luck. For a full game, please come to our club that meets on Thursdays at 7.30pm at Ashby Ivanhoe Social Club. Beginners welcome. Junior coaching is from 6.15pm, also Thursdays. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
