On page 11 we have a handy guide to all of the events scheduled to take place right here in Ashby and it’s quite a list. Tear it out and keep those dates clear. There’s something for all the family to enjoy. This month see’s the return of the Aldi Ashby 20 Road Race on Sunday 24th March. As well as the main race there’s a children’s fun run from 10.45am. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS Welcome to our first newsletter of 2019. Since our last article we have been celebrating our success in the Leicestershire Tourism and Hospitality Awards. We were delighted when Ashby not only won ‘Best Shopping Experience’ in Leicestershire but were also commended in the ‘Market Town’ category coming second only to Market Harborough. Well done everyone! More recently the Leicester Mercury published ‘8 reasons why Ashby is the best town in Leicestershire’. Our shopping also featured in this list alongside our heritage, our location here in the heart of the National Forest, our Purple Flag accreditation and of course our very own Lido!!!
The Purple Flag was originally awarded to Ashby back in 2017 in recognition of excellence in managing the evening and night-time economy. We are now in the process of applying for a renewal of the Purple Flag accreditation and would like to know your views. If you use Ashby between 5pm and 5am, be it for shopping, cultural events,

entertainment or leisure then please share your thoughts via our survey on our Facebook page or pop into Legion House on South Street for a paper copy. Many of you may have seen the recent announcement regarding Hood Park Leisure Centre which is under new management by Everyone Active in partnership with NW Leicestershire District Council. Work totalling almost £1.2 million to reconfigure and revamp Hood Park Leisure Centre – which will be renamed Ashby Leisure Centre and Lido – will begin in August and be completed in November 2019. This is amazing news and we can’t wait to see the results. All Blackfordby residents are invited to drop into The Old School Room on Main Street, Blackfordby between 10am and 12.30pm on Saturday 9th March for an update on progress on the Blackfordby Neighbourhood Plan. We would also be keen to gather your views on the draft policies we are planning to include in the plan. Finally, Town Council elections will take place on Thursday 2nd May. If you or somebody you know would be interested in standing as a candidate nomination papers are now available. The deadline to return them is 4pm on Wednesday 3rd April. ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS
der t e ice er or irates o e a ce We all know how much hard work goes into rehearsals, the music, the script, the dancing for any production. Our lovely audiences see the wellpolished result of those weeks of preparation when it comes to show week. What an audience rarely sees though is the fantastic team who make sure our productions are as slick and polished behind the scenes. Interim Stage Manager Alan Jamieson and his crew are currently building the Pirate King’s ship, a crypt, plus a multitude of shoreline rocks, gravestones, and other scenery which will mean our pirates and police have plenty of hiding places when it comes to them meeting up. We promise you, there will be a lot of hiding going on as the timid police meet up with the soft-hearted pirates! Alan is ably assisted by DSM Katie Cooper and her sound and light technicians; Sammy Vesty and Jude Moulton – all three have worked on professional theatre productions and are very excited to be involved in our latest venture. Not to be forgotten either is the army of people who
support us – the orchestra, our front of house team, wardrobe, props, hair and makeup, refreshments (yours and ours!), chaperones, photographers, printers and we mustn’t forget the parents who constantly support our smashing juniors and volunteer to help with the production in any way they can. So come and see the results of our weeks of hard work! We’re waiting to hear from you at the Box Office at amtg.org.uk. Tickets are £15 each for performances from 9th-13th April 2019, and we are really getting ready to welcome you to Penzance!

The Aldi Ashby 20
is due to ma e a come ac WHEN: Sunday 24th March 2019 at 10am
WHERE: Runners assemble at Ashby Bath Grounds to start the race at Upper Packington Road Ivanhoe Runners are proud to announce that The Aldi Ashby 20 is set to return on 24th March 2019 after having to cancel the 2018 running race for the first time since 2001 in the aftermath of the beast from the east which brought snow and icy conditions.
COURSE MAP
As in previous years, the two lap course will circuit around the local villages of Packington, Swepstone, Heather and Normanton Le Heath finishing on Ashby Bath Grounds. The event which is ideally placed for pre spring marathon distance runners has again received a ‘gold award’ by the British Association of Road Race. The Aldi Ashby 20 is a fantastic community event which over the years has raised thousands of pounds for local charities. The 2019 event will again be supporting Wishes 4 Kids, Hospice Hope, Heartwize and Teenage Cancer trust.
Why not come and support our runners, soak up the atmosphere or even get your children involved in the fun run? You can come and spectate and cheer the runners on during the race. Popular spots are Packington, Swepstone and Heather. Watch and be inspired by the finishers at the Bath Grounds. There will be hot food and drinks available here at the race village. Cheer on the children at the fun run - This is a great opportunity for your children to get active, have fun and feel the sense of achievement running brings.

ROAD CLOSURES
The official Temporary Traffic Order is until 5pm and roads will close and reopen in sequence to keep the closures to a minimum duration. Please consider the road closures and plan your journeys accordingly. One-way operation will be in place for the majority of the race route. Vehicles will not be allowed along the side the runners are on. The map indicates the direction of the runners. The one way system for cars will therefore be in a clockwise direction of the route. Two short sections will be fully closed for 10 mins (Upper Packington Rd from Leicester Rd to Lower Packington 9.55-10.05 and Ashby Rd from Lower Packington Road 10.00-10.10). Mill St closed 09.0510.15. 3-way traffic lights will operate from 09.00 – 13.30 at Gallows Lane/Swepstone Road junction. Diversions are in place to avoid Galllows Lane (passing Springs) via Measham, and from Odstone to Heather to get you safely beyond Heather Main St.

BODY MATTERS
ro e S oulder In our la atest ‘Body Matters’ article we have chosen to take a lo ook at the condition more co ommonly known as ‘Frozen n Shoulder’. In medicaal terms this is known as Adhesive Capsulitis. It is a conditio on which is poorly understood., with many people being diagnosed with frozen shoulder incorrectly. It differs from many shoulder conditions in that the restriction of shoulder is usually in all directions, not just painful in one or two. It also has three distinct phases:
your back, or putting your hand in a rear pocket may become impossible. Work may be affected in some cases. There is great variation in the severity and length of symptoms. Untreated, on average the symptoms last 1-2 years in total before going. In some cases it is much less than this. In a minority of cases, symptoms last for several years.
Phase one - the ‘freezing’, painful phase This typically lasts 2-9 months. The first symptom is usually pain. Stiffness and limitation in movement then also gradually build up. The pain is typically worse at night, and when lying on the affected side.
The cause for this level of pain and stiffness seems to be related to the capsule or bag surrounding the ball and socket joint in the shoulder, in which the tissue within the capsule becomes inflamed and thickens. This sometimes follows trauma but for many the cause is unknown.
Phase two - the ‘frozen’, stiff phase This typically lasts 4-12 months. Pain gradually eases but stiffness and limitation in movement remain and can get worse. All movements of the shoulder are affected but the movement most severely affected is usually rotation of the arm outwards. The muscles around the shoulder may waste a bit as they are not used.
Treatment is aimed at reducing the level of pain with muscle stretching, massage and exercise, and is ultimately aimed at reducing the resulting restriction of movement once the pain subsides.
Phase three - the ‘thawing’, recovery phase This typically lasts 5-24 months. Over time the stiffness eases and movement returns to normal, or near normal. Symptoms often interfere with everyday tasks such as driving, dressing, or sleeping. Even scratching 26

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS
Volunteers are integral not only to the success of the Museum, but to its actual existence. The Museum has been privileged over the last t hirty years to have attracted a multitude of skills and has built up a pleasing loyalty amongst the volunteers. In order to maintain the viability and high standard the town deserves, the Museum trustees are always delighted to welcome new faces. We are seeking new volunteers in various roles across the Museum with a variety of skills and experience. First contact with the Museum, whether it be by telephone or an actual visit, is the volunteer in Reception. This involves only two hours a fortnight, either in the morning or afternoon. You will be joining a welcoming team. Equally important, the Museum is looking for volunteers to help with the straightforward transferral of written material, e.g. documents, onto a database.

SPOTLIGHT ON...
e reat ro ect This month we turn our spotlight on to a local community project which is a partnership of multiple organisations, funded by the National Lottery and the European Social Fund and delivered by Voluntary Action Leicestershire (VAL). The Getting Ready for Employment and Training (GREAT) Project exists to support members of families who are not currently in work or training, and get them on the road to employment by helping them overcome any barriers they face. The GREAT project is entirely free and available to residents of Leicester and Leicestershire. It offers a unique approach to helping those who are unemployed find work, and every participant’s journey is different.
Community. BiTC organise industry tours, behind the scenes visits and work placements at a variety of places, including M&S, Eddie Stobart, East Midlands Airport and Next. Quite a lot of these activities often lead to an interview and the participant securing a job.
Each participant on the project has access to a range of benefits, most importantly a designated Employment Support Officer who is with them every step of the way. The Employment Support Officer guides the participant through the project, and ensures their time on the project is tailored to their specific goals.
The project also supports its participants in other ways, as it provides free child care at certain workshops and covers travel costs where needed.
Once on the project, participants can access a variety of support, including; CV writing, money management, confidence building, industry visits and work experience. All are aimed at getting the participant ready to work again. One of the delivery partners, Enstruct, delivers a 10 week construction/home improvement skills course where participants can also work towards a CSCS qualification. The GREAT project also works with Business in the
Tracey, a past participant who successfully completed the programme, said: “I don’t really remember doing anything fun in my life, but I remember everything I did with the GREAT Project. I’m genuinely upset that my time with the project has come to an end, but I’ve had an incredible experience and met some amazing people. Best of all, I now feel ready to go back to work. To those unsure or are considering joining the project, I’d say do it now, because it’s the best thing you’ll ever do.” One of the things that make the GREAT Project unique is down to the people it supports. The project helps those who identify as a member of a family; which is defined as a parent with a child living at home, a parent who has contact with their child or an adult living with parents or other family members. Those that want to get support and have barriers to work, like mental health issues or lack of skills, should contact the project directly. Individuals can self-refer by texting GREAT and their name to 66777 or by calling 0116 257 5020. For more information, please visit: www.greatproject.org.uk.

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE
il rims a ca es a d osies
This month, you might like to pop into the Community Heritage Centre and visit our new exhibition on Pilgrimage. St Helen’s Church has a fine 15th Century pilgrim memorial, the figure of a man in pilgrim clothes, with a cockle shell on his hat, carrying a long walking staff. Traditionally, pilgrims in the middle ages travelled light, trusting that they would be sheltered and fed along their journey. Our pilgrim may have visited Santiago de Compostella in Spain, or Rome. Our researchers are hoping to find out more about him. Find out what our research group has been up to in the last of our current series of heritage talks, on 4th March. Why did changing an ‘M’ to an ‘N’ tell us so much about one of our memorials? How and why did the Victorians extend the church sideways? What’s beneath our new Heritage Centre? What has ground penetrating radar told us about our vaults? Intrigued? Then come along at 7.30pm to hear the answers to these questions, and more besides. Just £3 per person, including refreshments.
We’ll also be celebrating Pancake Day at St Helen’s, when we’ll be making and eating lots of pancakes. There is a serious side to this fun occasion, as Shrove Tuesday, is the last day of feasting before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. We eat pancakes on this day to remember the time when any remaining rich foods were eaten on the day before the long Lent fast began. Finally we will be celebrating Mothering Sunday on 31st March – with flowers, of course.

PARENTING TIPS

Helping your child to discover a love of gardening. Their own little corner Your child may not have the same taste in plants as you do. So, if you can, give them their own mini-plot to experiment with. Let them choose the plants they want (after discussing soil conditions, shade etc.) and give them the responsibility of watering and weeding. Children aren’t known for their patience so try to incorporate some plants that will give instant enjoyment and have a strong fragrance, such as lavenders and geraniums, along with others that are easy to grow and worth the wait, such as sunflowers, sweet peas and marigolds. Grow your own Fussy eaters caan often be persuaded to o try new things if they’ve had d a hand in growing them. If yo ou have the space for a raised d bed, you could try courgeettes, lettuces, or dwarf runner beans. Limited space? Potatoes, carrots and peas can be grown in pots. To omatoes thrive against a su unny wall, while pepper plantss and herbs will be fine on a windowsill.. Wildlife Encourage your child to hang bird feeders in the garden and fill a shallow bowl for a bird bath. You could also help them to make a bee hotel by tying sections of bamboo canes together, or fixing the canes into a terracotta pot with some modelling clay. Older children might enjoy identifying different birds, bees and insects using a book or app. Somewhere to play You may not have room for a football pitch or trampoline, but even small gardens can usually offer some space for play. A few fixed logs can make a fun mini-obstacle course for example, and a swing can provide hours of enjoyment. Why not build a temporary den over a low hanging branch with some old sheets, clothes pegs and cushions? You could also make a mini-sandpit with a trough, large plant pot or small paddling pool. 42
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
A fairy garden Create a fairy garden together by filling a shallow container with soil and adding a few small plants. You could use a small plant pot for a house, create a miniature lake with a ramekin and make a swing with sticks and string. Add some solar-powered twinkly lights and a couple of small wooden or plastic elves and fairies. Safety first Teach children never to eat anything from the garden without checking with you first. Do head to the RHS website (www.rhs.org.uk) to find out what plants to avoid growing though; some are very poisonous and others can irritate skin and eyes. Keep sharp tools, plant food and weed killer safely out of reach at all times. If you have a pond, cover it with a rigid metal grille. More inspiration The BBC has lots of ideas for encouraging children into gardening, from growing g patterns on the lawn to building a wormerry. See www. bbc.co.uk/ gardening/ gardening_with_ _ children.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH
redicti
t e eat er
Weather, in this country, seems to be a bit of an obsession. What’s more, it often involves a rhyme or saying.
ahead. Conversely, if there’s high water content in the atmosphere as the sun rises, light is scattered and appears red, suggesting rain is coming.
“March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb”, basically means March starts off cold and stormy but turns to spring at the end. Or the truism “April showers bring forth May flowers” – while we may dislike the April rains, they produce beautiful vegetation and help put bread on the table.
In Matthew ch16 Jesus says, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times”.
Some weather sayings have always confused me, “The Oak before the Ash we are in for a splash, but the Ash before the Oak we are in for a soak.” It seems to me either way we get wet!
We spend our lives trying to predict the weather, yet often fail to spot the clear signs in this mixedup world which point towards Jesus’ return. It’s all mapped out for us – we just need to stop and read. Jesus is coming, ready or not!
“Red sky at night shepherd’s delight, red sky in the morning shepherd’s warning”, at least has some scientific backing. A red evening sky occurs when sunlight shines through high concentrations of dust particles, indicating high pressure and dry weather

Year end tax planning
With the end of the tax year looming there is still time to save tax for 2018/19. Matters to consider. Make full use of your ISA allowance ISAs are a useful tax free way to save.
Take advantage of capital allowances By making the most of capital allowances, businesses may be able to write off the costs of capital assets against taxable profits. The Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) allows businesses to claim a deduction of up to £200,000 of the year’s investment in plant and machinery (excluding cars). A popular choice for improving skincare which you may not have considered… Face masks have been around for a long time. We’ve all seen one before, whether that’s in shops, in films or on social media. Perhaps you’d assumed that the face mask had already had its heyday? Well that is absolutely not the case. In fact, there has been incredible growth in the market for face masks and it’s still growing. The numbers behind the face mask boom The UK face mask industry is growing every year. The UK buyer base is thought to be 6.1 million customers, which is around 10% of the population. Research shows that face masks were the fastest growing format in facial skincare in 2018.
The newest trend in face masks is the sheet mask. Originating in Korea, these face masks have really gained popularity over the last few years especially. They look exactly as they sound: you take the mask out of the packaging, unfold it and place it over your face like a sheet. Sheet masks can be made out of lots of different materials from foil, to cotton, to bio-cellulose fibres. Essentially, these masks create a barrier over your skin, so that the ingredients can get to work without burden from the outside world. Therefore, if you’re thinking of using a sheet mask, it’s very important to consider the ingredients you’re putting onto your skin.
Interestingly this boost is not all due to female buyers though, with 43% more men buying masks in the last year. The male face mask market is now worth 5.7 million and this is likely to grow as more men take an interest in skincare.

Lots of choice for face masks There are so many different types of face masks that it can be hard to know which type to choose. The more traditional type is a clay or gel mask. With these, you rub the mask onto your face and leave for the recommended time. To remove, you either wash off with water or, if the mask dries as you wear it, peel it off. Our Sonya Refining Gel Mask could be considered an example of a gel mask, however it is specifically designed to be worn overnight as opposed to most other gel or clay masks which are only designed to be worn for around 20 minutes.

ON THE BEAT Hello, I would like to introduce myself as the new neighbourhood Sergeant for the Bardon Hill neighbourhood beat. I have been a police officer for 17½ years and spent my previous service in the Beaumont Leys Neighbourhood team as a police constable on the west side of the city. I was promoted to Sergeant and most recently worked in Eastern Counties covering Oakham, Rutland, Market Harborough, Lutterworth and the south side of inner city Leicester on a rolling 247 service in front line policing. I have a wealth of experience in community policing and have completed a number of projects with those that cause harm and those that need our support. I enjoy working with partners and the community, being part of what matters to you in your area. Hopefully you will see me out and about in the
community with the wellestablished neighbourhood team, please come and have a chat with me and share your views or concerns. I would also like to share with you our Crimestoppers telephone number which lets you report information about crime - please ring 0800 555 111. Your details will not be revealed or monitored, the company are a charity, they have a website and you can report online www.crimestoppers-uk.org Finally I bring some good news, the police budget for the first time in a number of years has increased thanks to the people of the county, which enables us to have growth in the service and have an uplift in police officers and police staff for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. HOME & INTERIORS
5 easy interior tips to transform a space
ust i time or Spri
DEFINE THE FOCAL POINT OF A ROOM
Before we decide on what is not working in a space, the first thing we should be looking at is the focal point. Once you have located the focal point, the furniture arrangement will become natural and the energy of the space will be reinvigorated! If the room does not have a focal point, you can simply create one, such as adding a feature fireplace into a lounge, or installing a statement pendant in a hallway!
PAINT
A new coat of paint makes the place feel instantly refreshed and clean. It will allow you to discover other aspects of the room which require improvement. Stick to a tight colour palette and take your time to experiment with different hues to make sure it works with the light in the room.
LIGHTING
Investing in quality dimmer switches in your home can be one of the best investments. Rooms which are deprived of ambient lighting can be transformed
with this simple solution. Go for the best finish you can afford so that they last as well as looking good for a long time. Adding a few statement lamps can totally transform your soft furnishings.
ACCESSORIES
Don’t leave your coffee table bare to collect dust, use it instead to inject style and colour with a beautiful flower vase, and don’t forget to include statement votive candle holders to add an ambient mood in the evening. For a dull looking wall, invest in a piece of artwork or add a characterful mirror to enhance the space. For those unsightly awkward corners in a room, add a house plant with a decorative pot.
DECLUTTER AND REARRANGE
A cluttered room is always going to be uninviting and a bit ‘stressy’, Simply by de-cluttering and rearranging your furniture you can bring a room back to life. Being able to live free of clutter will also benefit your ability to focus, calm your mind and improve the energy flow in your home. If you struggle to get started or feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff you have to sort though, try the KonMari method by Marie Kondo. It will definitely benefit you in many ways!
Good luck....you’ll be glad you made the effort!! Interior tips with FABCO in-store designer Eddie Ong

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS
s
remiere o e
Ashby Dramatic Society are proud to announce the staging of a newly written play at the Venture Theatre. The play is called Ten Rods and is written by a member of the society – Terry Hammond. Ten Rods is a comedy set on an allotment, where competition for the best looking dahlia and the biggest marrow is very strong amongst rival allotment holders. The title ‘Ten Rods’ relates to the length of each plot, which is 10 rods long using the ancient land measurement. The plot of the play involves criminal activity and suspicious behaviour amongst the gardeners. Whilst the play is very funny there are some blacker moments in the dialogue. The play is being performed between 2nd and 11th May and tickets are available from our usual agents; Ashby Tourist Information Centre (01530 411 767).
la Coming up at the Venture is our regular Jazz Night on 9th March which features the Ben Holder Quartet but the superb violinist is so popular that the event is sold out! The next Jazz Club event is on 13th April and has a great band from Lancashire, Martin Bennet’s Old Green River Band. As ever there is a great variety of music at the Venture. On Saturday 16th March we present the great musician Sally Barker plus two well-known folk singers Anna Ryder and Marion Fleetwood. Together they make up the band IOTA. Tickets cost £12 and are available from the Ashby Tourist Information Centre or via our website; www.ashbyventuretheatre.org.uk

arc is atio al utritio With all of the information out there on social media sites, we know that exercise really is the best thing for us. It has huge health benefits from reducing anxiety & depression, to helping prevent heart disease, strokes, diabetes & even some cancers. However, just as important is getting the right amount of nutrition into our bodies. I honestly think a lot of people believe that if they train really hard every day in the gym that this will somehow make up for eating a bad diet. If only it was that simple! A lot of us also don’t actually realise the number of calories we are consuming each day either! I’ve known it be under estimated by as much as 500kcals a day, and this is such a large amount! For someone who desires to be lean, it takes the right amount of proper foods as well as an effective exercise routine. The two massively go hand in hand. Proper nutrition must always be available to you when you’re training hard, if not your development will most definitely suffer.
o t
Good nutrition is not just about the carbohydrates that fuel you & the protein for it’s repairing muscles, about all the added vitamins & minerals that play a huge role in helping our bodies be the best they can be. These micronutrients are often forgotten about - Calcium & Vitamin D for bone health, enough iron to prevent fatigue & antioxidants to support our immune system, the list is endless... PENSIONS THERE’S GOOD NEWS! Many commentators had predicted that the Chancellor would announce major changes to pension tax relief in his 2018 Autumn Budget. However, this wasn’t the case.
part of the tax-free cash, taking a lump sum including the tax-free element and taking the whole pension fund including the tax-free cash.
Other than the raising of the Lifetime Allowance in line with the Consumer Prices Index to £1,055,000 for the 2019-20 tax year, the rules surrounding pensions remain the same.
PLANS TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS - Ideally, everyone would start to save for their pension as soon as they start work, however even if you only have a few working years left, you can still start a pension. Pension plans come in various forms to suit the needs of different types of worker, from the basic state pension to self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs), personal or private pensions, and workplace pensions schemes, to name but a few.
VALUABLE TAX RELIEF - Pensions continue to offer generous tax breaks to encourage us all to provide adequately for our retirement years. If you make contributions to a pension, or if your employer deducts your payments from your salary, you automatically get 20% tax relief as an additional deposit into your pension pot. If you are a higher-rate taxpayer, you can claim an extra 20%, while those paying additional-rate tax can claim back an extra 25%. From age 55, you can take 25% of your savings as a tax-free lump sum. There are different ways of doing this, including taking the tax-free cash only, taking

The sooner you start your pension, the longer your money will have to grow. If you’re self-employed, an employee, work part-time, run your own business or have accumulated pension pots with past employers, we can offer you the advice you need. If you haven’t looked at your pension plan recently, then please contact Ian Staley, Independent Financial Adviser on 01530 567020 to arrange a review.

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS The Conservation Volunteers will be doing a lot of work this month, planting trees before the warmer weather. In the spring, the roots of trees become active before the buds, and a tree planted at the end of winter will have time to establish some new roots before the buds burst. Once the leaves are there, a plant loses water from them. This extra root growth, then, can be the difference between a sapling establishing well or it barely clinging to life over the summer. I am sure you will be glad to know that a lot of our tree planting work is done with local school children. The children come for a morning, plant some trees, and have a chance to do some environmental education experience with a partner organisation of ours. It’s all funded by the National Forest Company.

It’s lovely to see the enthusiasm of the children, not only escaping from lessons but given the chance to work for positive environmental change! Do you remember our hedge at Thornton?? As I write, it is still only halfway there, but by the time this magazine lands on your doorstep we should be complete. Fingers crossed! See you next month! Kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk

IN YOUR GARDEN
ul s or summer o ers It’s time to plan, buy and plant your summer bulbs and tubers. Catalogues showing a kaleidoscope of magnificent colours are on my desk. This is far better than being a child in a sweet shop; the wish that Mother Nature will transform a humble, non-descript looking bulb into a firework of delight is going to come true again, just like it does every year. Garden centres have glossy flower pictures behind oddly shaped, flaking brown bulbs which don’t at all resemble what they will become. It is, however, all true: just plant the bulbs as the instructions say and you will be rewarded with the display of your choosing. My favourite bulbs to get this time of year are Agapanthus, Anemone, Begonia, Canna, Cyclamen, Dahlia, Gladiolus, and Lilium. Agapanthus like a dryish soil and the bulbs don’t like to be too wet. This means they are not suitable for our local soil, but they do perform well in deep pots o raised beds where or plenty of drainage is included. A Agapanthus March gardening jobs ‘Marcus’ is a lovely variety as • Prepare seed beds its flowers are a • Add organic matter to borders C Cambridge blue • t bac winter owering s r bs dog and it will grow up woods and ornamental grasses t 90cm tall. to • Plant s mmer owering b lbs

they provide a very long lasting flower display. The begonia ‘Double Orange’ is an exquisite bright colour, so superbly tropical in appearance. Begonias are good for pots, baskets and bedding, but they do need to be lifted and brought into frost free conditions for the winter. You should plant inside in March and plant outside in late May or early June. A Cyclamen by contrast will give a much more subtle display due to the colours being limited to whites, pinks and purples. Hardy cyclamen, the species hederifoium (autumn flowering) and cyclamen Coum (winter – spring flowering) will naturalise easily under trees and in north facing borders, rock gardens or even in grass. These tubers are often supplied rooted or even already potted and should be planted shallowly, 3-4cm deep. Dahlias are divine. They are all so scrumptious it is near impossible to choose which ones to have. This year I have finally decided on Dahlia ‘Advance’, its flower is of delicate yellow. I’ve also spotted that there is one called ‘X Factor’ – could this be a chance to get a teenager interested in gardening? Any Dahlias in the Bishop’s series have lovely dark red foliage which is superb against the flower colour. Last year I had Bishop of Llandaff ( a deep red flower) which drew me out into the garden constantly. Lastly, if you have space, Lilies are good plants for borders or pots and just need well drained soil and lots of humus. Have a look for Lilium Apricot Fudge. It looks as good as it sounds – but don’t eat it!

VERRUCA NEEDLING
NOW OFFERED AT PERFECT FEET WHAT ARE VERRUCA? A Verruca is an excess growth of skin on the foot caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This viral infection is normally harmless but the overlying hard skin on weight bearing areas can become uncomfortable to walk upon. WHAT IS VERRUCAE NEEDLING? Verruca needling is a relatively new treatment offered for suitable clients who have not responded to other forms of treatment such as the use of salicylic Acids, Cryotherapy (freezing the Verrucae) or other occlusion therapy. A local Anesthetic is used to numb where the Verruca is, then a very ďŹ ne needle is used to puncture the Verruca multiple times. After an
antiseptic a small sterile dressing is applied which is normally taken off after 24 hours. HOW DOES NEEDLING WORK? In essence like other treatments as mentioned needling attempts to activate your immune system to recognize that there is a viral infection within your skin. It does this by damaging the Verruca and transferring some of the virus into the deeper layers of skin where the immune system is much more active and present. If you have multiple Verruca of the same kind only one is needled and if successful all Verruca should be cleared by your immune system. Please call for more information on Verruca needling on the contact information below.

Although we welcome the warmer weather with open arms, spring also means the reemergence of parasites that can cause severe discomfort for your dog, and are potentially a serious health risk. The danger of ticks Ticks are small oval-shaped parasites often found in countryside areas. They attach themselves to a ‘host’ to suck their blood, and if not removed quickly can cause health issues ranging from serious irritation to your dog’s skin to potentially life-changing Lyme disease. Safely removing a tick The best way to remove a tick is to use a special tick-remover shaped for the purpose, which your vet should be able to provide. It’s important to twist the body before pulling it out, and to ensure the whole of the tick is removed. BOOK REVIEWS
oo s to s are Whether you give them as a gift or only pass them on once you’ve turned the last page, these books were made for sharing with friends and family. Becoming Michelle Obama Michelle Obama’s autobiography became an instant hit when it was published late last year, and it’s easy to see why. Her trademark warmth, humility and intelligence shine from every page. The memoir takes us from Michelle’s early childhood to her time as First Lady, and beyond. Entertaining, thought-provoking and inspiring to boot. When All is Said Anne Griffin Widower Maurice sits at a bar in Ireland, raising toasts to the most important people in his life, from the brother who died so many years ago to his late wife. His joys, tragedies and regrets are laid bare. A warm, powerful tale that’s hugely enjoyable to read. You’ll miss Maurice’s humour, straighttalking and honesty when you reach the end. Hold Michael Donkor 17-year-old Belinda is a Ghanaian housemaid, who is sent to London by her mistress as a companion for another teenage girl, Amma. Belinda leaves behind fellow maid, 11-year-old Mary. Belinda and Amma grow close until a revelation causes Belinda to question everything she’s been taught. The three girls struggle with their identities and the expectations placed on them, whether by parents, employers or society as a whole. An intriguing coming of age novel with plenty of unexpected twists.

A Poem for Every Day of the Year Allie Esiri Whether you fancy a funny poem for April Fool’s Day, a festive one for Christmas or an autumnal treat for October, you’ll find them all and more in this collection. While the book is aimed at children, these are poems that people of any age can enjoy. Poets range from old favourites such as Charlotte Brontë, Emily Dickinson and Phillip Larkin to contemporary wordsmiths such as Kate Tempest. Each poem has a short introduction by Allie Esiri. Humans of London Cathy Teesdale Cathy Teesdale has taken thousands of photographs across Greater London over the years. This book features more than 250 of her best shots with short quotes from the subjects. Beautiful pictures, interesting stories, a glimpse into other people’s lives – what more could you ask for from a coffee table book? Sherlock Holmes Case Book: Solve-it-Yourself Mysteries Tim Dedopulos If you love a good ‘whodunnit’ and enjoy sifting through the clues to identify the culprit for yourself, you’re going to love this book. There are 10 cases to solve, from ‘The Birchfield Mystery’ to ‘Murder at the Carnaby Rooms’. Each one is beautifully illustrated. Twists, turns and plenty of red herrings mean you’ll need all your powers of deduction to solve the crimes. Great fun.

CHESS PUZZLE
W iitttee too pla laa a d mate i t o ‘As mad as a March hare,’ is a popular phrase. It relates to their erratic behaviour at this time of year. The hare is not represented on a chess board. Instead we have the knight, that looks like the head of a horse. It too jumps about eratically. Now to the puzzle. It’s hard, and of course there were no clues. It may be a pain in the brain, but you’ll feel better when you’ve solved it. Much easier would be a casual game at the club. Why not join us at the Ivanhoe Social Club in Ashby, every Thursday at 7.30pm? Juniors, beginners, and experts are all welcome. Look us up at www.ashbychess.com for more details and team news. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 124 - should you need it!
