ADVERTORIAL
Protecting Your Family’s Inheritance Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solution to help protect your estate is a Will incorporating a Property Protection Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ultimate beneficiary of this share, normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. A PPT can help each person in a relationship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property,
while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can still sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Kornerstone Legal services will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protection for you, your family and your assets.

ASHBY TOWN COUNCIL NEWS In our last newsletter we looked back at a summer of fantastic events in Ashby from FakeFest to the Sealed Knot Re-enactment. The crowds at these were no match for the turnout we saw on Sunday 11th November as we marked the centenary of World War 1. Market Street was packed with people watching the parade and the wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial. The evening service at St Helens Church with the poppy drop and beacon lighting completed a fitting day of remembrance and celebration. Pictures of the day as well as a video of the ceremony can be seen on our Facebook page @Ashbytowncouncil. Following the lovely display of 100+ poppy paintings around town the paintings were moved and put on display in Ashby Library to be sold by silent auction. The final amount raised for the Royal British Legion is yet to be announced. As this magazine drops through your letterbox Ashby will be enjoying a weekend of festive fun with the Christmas Fair on Saturday and the Ashby Santa Fun Run on Sunday as well as Ashby Food Gusto food & drink market running across both days. In a continued effort to encourage everyone to shop local and support local businesses in their Christmas shopping all District Council car parks in Ashby will be free of charge every Saturday in December (this does not include the Royal Hotel or Rushton’s Yard car parks).
If you are thinking of standing in the elections please contact Jack Fargher on jackfargher@ ashbytowncouncil.org.uk or call 01530 416961and he will provide further details. Consultation on HS2 Phase 2b is currently underway and we urge everyone to take the time to have their say before this window of opportunity closes at 11.45pm on Friday 21st December. The ‘Working Draft Environmental Statement and Equality Impact Assessment’ can be viewed at www.gov.uk/ government/consultations/hs2-phase-2b-workingdraft-environmental-statement and looks at a number of potential issues including the demolition of properties in New Packington and Willesley Woodside, the impact of road closures during construction on the A511, Leicester Road and Ashby Road as well as proposed routes for construction vehicles i.e. Corkscrew Lane. Responses to the proposals can be made via an online form at the website above or by emailing environment2b@ipsos-mori.com Any queries can be directed to Karen Edwards at karenedwards@ ashbytowncouncil.org.uk . And finally a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone at Ashby Town Council.
The 2019 Ashby Town Council events have been scheduled and a full list will be shared in the January hby Life. In May 2019 ellectiions for both h th he issue off Ash Town Council and the District Council will take place. We will keep you informed of details in upcoming newsletters and share dates for information events.

COVER COMPETITION
Winner: SOPHIE STURGESS (aged10)
Our Christmas Cover!
Last month we ran our first ever competition for one lucky winner to design our Christmas cover. We were overwhelmed by the response and the number of entries which came flooding in.
We even had local schools and after school clubs taking part and sending in artwork from all their children. This was amazing but did pose us with 18
one problem…..how to choose just one winner.
As you can see from our cover we did manage this after much deliberation and we were delighted to present Sophie Sturgess (aged 9) with her prize of a £10 gift voucher courtesy of The Olive Branch Toy Shop, a selection box and a framed copy of the final cover. Well done Sophie – we think it looks great!

ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE
What’s in a name?
Life is never dull at St Helen’s, where, over the next few weeks, we’ll be explaining the meaning of Christingles, Pomanders and Leicestershire place names. The tradition of Christmas stockings stems from a story of Saint Nicholas, precursor of Santa Claus, and so does the story of oranges in them. The story goes something like this: St. Nicholas heard of a widowed father of three daughters, who was having a tough time making ends meet. He was worried that being poor would make it impossible for them to marry, as he didn’t have money for a dowry. Secretly one night, St Nicholas tossed three sacks of gold down the chimney for the girls’ dowries. Of course, the gold landed in the girls’ stockings, which were hanging by the fire to dry. Over time, oranges became a symbol of the gold that was left in the stockings. The orange connection? As always, we will be hosting that most magical of Christmas services, the Christingle, which has become so much part of many families’ December traditions. This will be in church at 3pm on Sunday 16th December, when children will learn another story, that of the Christingle orange.
We will also be making Pomanders! Let me explain: a pomander is a piece of fruit, traditionally an orange, that has been pierced by cloves and dried so that it llets off ff a wonderful d f l aroma. As A wellll as b i llovely l being
22
Christmas decorations, Pomanders can be used as a natural air freshener! Children can make one to keep at one of our popular workshops (£1 per child) in the Community Heritage Centre on Saturday 15th December, 10am to 12 noon. And place names, I hear you ask? Well, Dr Rebecca Gregory will be giving the next of our popular local history talks in the Community Heritage Centre on Monday 3rd December at 7.30 pm, when she will share the secrets a thousand years of Leicestershire place names can tell us. Just £3 per adult. Do come along to some of our December events. You won’t be disappointed. S h l h i k See www.sthelensheritage.co.uk

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS Winter is here – time to get outdoors and grab some daylight! In conservation, winter is for digging over beds in community gardens and allotments, for tree felling and rounds of scrub clearance, especially rhododendron, blackthorn, and bramble. It is also the season for warming bonfires, toasted marshmallows and mince pies. Throughout winter why not take a little time off and get outdoors? Spending time in the great outdoors surrounded by nature has been proven to improve your health and wellbeing, and to reduce stress. Whether it is a walk with the dog; taking the kids/grandkids out to the local park; or, for the more ambitious, doing one of the National Forest’s circular walks, you can almost guarantee you will return feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Grab your coat, pull on your wellies and give it a go, it’s free for all the family! Over December TCV’s National Forest team
will be at Swadlincote Woodlands urban park for our regular first-Tuesday-of-the-month event as well as carrying out some hedgelaying at Thornton Meadows on Tuesday 11th & 18th December. Come and join us for conservation exercise, to meet new people and reconnect with nature, keeping away those winter blues. TCV the community volunteering charity works in the National Forest with a regular group of conservation volunteers to create healthier, happier communities for everyone. If you’d like to join us and can spare the time in this busy period, do get in touch: kay.thompson@tcv.org. uk or check our website tcv.org.uk/volunteering to see all local upcoming opportunities.

IN YOUR GARDEN
The Christmas rose The Christmas rose would make a lovely seasonal gift. A Christmas legend says that this plant appeared in Bethlehem when an old shepherd who had no gift for baby Jesus cried and his tears turned to flowers to give to the baby. The Latin name for the Christmas rose is Helleborous Niger. It is an evergreen perennial which is actually a member of the buttercup family. The flowers are similar looking to a wild rose, but do not belong to the rose family. The erect stems support flowers with petals which look like velvet paper which appear in a blast of beautiful wintery whiteness. The flowers of this hardy plant are usually continuous from December to February and sometimes for longer from November to March. This plant grows to around 30cm high and looks good in perennial borders and as under planting to the canopy of trees or the edges of deciduous shrubs. It grows well in shade and partial shade and is suitable for our local clay soil, and also in light and well drained soil. In addition, it is tolerant of acidic and alkaline soil. This popular plant has the Royal Horticultural Society ’ss Award of Garden Merit. Snow will make the plant droop a bit but otherwise it is unaffected and the flowers spring g back ack up up.
De
r g a rd c em be
en i ng
After a few years the plants can be divided into 2 or 3 plants and spread around to create a lovely grouping. The leaves are a dark green setting off beautifully the crisp whiteness of the flower. Especially after the plant has finished flowering and is past its best it can be tidied up by removing browning leaves and any leggy stems. I usually do this at the end of March or April. The Christmas rose can be grown in pots in john Innes potting compost too. Placing the plants in a cold frame or green house can encourage early flowering. There are Hellebores flowers which range from colours of deep purple to light pink and lime green. Some have purple spotted leaves. Helleborous orientalis sometimes called the Lantern rose is another Hellebore I regularly use in peoples’ gardens as a slightly later flowering variety. It is always interesting to delve into the story of a plant and it is uplifting to learn that the Christmas rose is said to symbolise a pioneering spirit and survival.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH
A future king is born Royal fans across the world were delighted at the recent announcement that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting their first baby. Giving birth to a royal baby though, comes with a lot of rules, procedures and expectations.
encrusted crowns. Jesus led a humble life and served others. He wanted to heal the sick and tell everyone about God’s kingdom. The safe arrival of any baby is good news, but the birth of Jesus is great news for us all; that Jesus came into this world because God loves us. “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David, a Saviour has been born.”
In contrast, two thousand years ago, the Son of God was born in the most humble of places. With no room in the inn, baby Jesus was born in a stable surrounded by animals. He didn’t have a crib but instead was placed in a manger. Does that sound like the kind of place a King should be born?
The birth of Jesus gives everyone a hope for the future. So, let’s not forget to remember Jesus at this special time of year, a royal birth unlike any other.
But Jesus is not like other kings. He didn’t live in a palace, he didn’t wear beautiful robes or jewel-

TECHNOLOGY TIPS
Top Tips for a Happy Christmas with new gadgets Here’s a few tips to make sure that the kids awaiting new gadgets from Santa have a great Christmas, and as parents, you have a stress free time too! Whilst gaming is meant to be fun, its also a risky place to be for a few reasons: • If you’ve bought a new gadget or tech item for your child, open it up. Check it over, do any initial setups, registration, download updates etc. Most importantly of all make sure it has batteries or is fully charged. • Check whether the device you have bought has the facility for parental controls. It is advisable to see how restrictions work, to ensure that your child remains safe whilst in the connected world. • It is also imperative to familiarise yourself with how any information from the device may be shared. What info does the gadget collect, where is it stored, does it take photos and recordings – are they safe? Does it use location-based services, and can it be turned off? • Wherever you buy the new gadget from, don’t be put off asking for tips and help from the retailer
selling it to you. They should be experienced enough to answer any questions you might have. • Last and most importantly, familiarise yourself with how it works. Your child will be eager to get going with it on the day. If you know how it all works, it can make the whole experience better and one to share together. If you are stuck and don’t know where to turn, our team at PC Clinic are your technology experts and can often help with most things. Visit us at Huntingdon Court, Ashby – www.pcclinic-ashby.co.uk

BOD DY MATTERS
Heel Pain
In this month h’s Body Matters we take a look at one of the most commoon foot complaints – heel pain. The heel bone is the largest of the foot bones. It is designed to form a firm support for the weight of your body and to absorb the impact when your feet hit the ground during running and walking. Due to the amount of force that goes through your heel it is not surprising that heel pain is such a common occurrence. Although heel pain can be mild and will sometimes disappear on its own, in some cases the pain persists and can become a chronic problem. There are a varieety of causes for heel pain. The most common cause is a cond dition callled d ‘pllantar fasciitis’’. This is the inflammation of the plantar fascia, which causes pain on the underside of the heel. The plantar fascia works like a very strong rubber band between the heel and the ball of your foot to form the arch of your foot. If the band is short, you’ll have a high arch, and if it’s long, you’ll have a low arch, this is what some people call flat feet. There are a number of things that can predispose you to developing ‘plantar fascitis’. For example: • A sudden increase in activity such as taking up a new sport or an unusually long walk in unsuitable shoes. We have noticed an increase in heel pain due to the recent trend of very flat shoes for men and women. • Weight gain, for example during pregnancy (especially as the ligaments get looser), puts greater pressure on the plantar fascia. • Conditions such as over pronation which causes the feet to roll-in excessively putting greater pressure on the plantar fascia. (This is often referred to as flat-footed.) This rolling is caused by a change to the walking pattern (for example walking with toes pointing out) and also in response to a flattening of the front part of the foot over the balls of the feet. 60
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
• Running on hard pavements and increasing your hill work can also cause plantar fasciitis. Stretching before and after exercise is often neglected yet it is one of the most important steps to help prevent injuries and heel pain. If you are a reasonably regular runner it is also important to wear the correct shoe for your body. When easing into a new or increasingly difficult routine it is also important to limit the amount of sudden pressure on the foot. • An inactive lifestyle that is centred around a desk job will decrease your calf muscle flexibility. This can be an underlying cause of heel pain. This leaves you very prone to injury and aggravation around the heel with only a slight increase in activity. There are many other causes of pain in and around the heel that we have not discussed. As with all medical conditions a correct diagnosis is of paramount importance for the appropriate treatment and management of the condition.

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020 REACHED YOUR HALFCENTURY? HOW TO PLAN FOR RETIREMENT Once you reach 50, it’s time to get serious about planning your retirement. True, it could still seem ages away, and you may not be thinking of giving up work anytime soon. However, putting a retirement plan together will help you understand what your finances will look like when you decide to take life easy. Retirement planning isn’t just about getting your money organised, although that’s vitally important. Depending on your circumstances, you may want to think about completely changing your lifestyle, moving home, travelling the world, or simply putting your feet up. And like all big projects in life, the more time you can invest in thinking it through, the better. START BY TAKING STOCK Getting financial advice will help you get a true perspective on how your pension planning is shaping up. We will help you work out the value of your current plans, including your state pension entitlement. If you’ve lost track of pensions held with past employers, now is a good time to get them traced. If you’ve several pension
plans, we will be able to help you work out if it would make sense to consolidate them. And don’t just think about pensions; having money in ISAs will help in planning your retirement income taxefficiently. DO YOUR SUMS Don’t leave it until the last minute to work out how much money you’ll need to live on in retirement. Some costs will go down, like travel to work, but others like utility bills are likely to increase as you spend more time at home. Factor in the cost of the travel, holidays and hobbies you’re likely to want to pursue when you have more time. As part of the service at DGS, we take the time to understand our client’s unique planning needs and circumstances, so that we can provide you with the most suitable solutions in the most cost-effective way. For a free review of your current pension plans and financial situation, please contact Ian Staley, Independent Financial Adviser on 01530 567020.

THE LIFE OF MAN
CHANGE
A dishevelled, angry newborn comes into the light, A yellow blanket wrapped around it as it cries with all its might, And next a child pulling on a backpack, Swapping the blanket of yellow for a uniform of black, Then the teenager spotting his first true love, And years later pulling a yellow ring on her finger under a sea of doves, The man passes on the yellow blanket, drawing it around the baby like a gown, Next scene walks into an office, his ageing skin pulled into a frown, Finally the yellow blanket is put in his hands by his wife, As the elderly man shuts his eyes for the last time in his life. FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC
And so this is Christmas... ...I can hear you u singing it!
Wow, how fast has this year gone?! Christmas. Love it or hate it, it’s a great timee for reflection, particularly when it comes to you ur health. We all love giving and receiving giftts at this time of year but there really isn’t a better gift than to stay fit and healthy all year around. I know sometimes we take our health for granted, and it’s not until we’re poorly that we realize just how important it is to us! This is very real to me as someone who suffers from lower back pain from time to time. When it strikes, I can think of nothing else but to get better, nothing else matters. I’m a really bad patient too, having to miss a few workouts frustrates the heck out of me! I guess what I’m saying is let’s think how we have been this year, the ups and downs, and see if we can be better next year, fewer problems both physically and mentally maybe, can we improve our fitness, our well-being, can we eat a bit better, spend more time with our family and friends? It’s well known in my industry that January is a busy time, and for good reason, we all need to press the reset button sometimes, and what better time than the New Year! So, come on - Let’s do it together! Let’s get motivated, let’s get positive, let’s get energetic, let’s get on it! Healthy body and healthy mind. Forget all the social media shenanigans about super fit bodies, fancy exercises and quick fix diets
– all you need is to take just a tiny step. A step forward is a step in the right direction, a few inches here, a few there, a slightly better fitting t-shirt or dress, better skin, brighter outlook, less worries. You can read all the studies and articles on fitness and what it does for you, but nothing comes close to how it actually feels! YOU are what’s important. Not the things you drive, the things you buy, the things you amass. Remember, you can’t take them with you! Join me and my team and I guarantee we’lll help make life a little brighter for you! We’re all super motivated here and nothing motivates us more than seein ng our clients happy and reaching their goals! Pop in and see us now. Why wait untiil the New Year? Gift vouchers are also available for any value, package or membership. By Simon Pellecchia Fitness Republic

ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS
The Pirates of Penzance sail into Ashby! We’re delighted to announce that our 2019 production of The Pirates of Penzance – the Broadway version – will be staged at The Ashby School from 9th to14th April 2019! The Production Team have cast a few of the characters – the Pirate King will be played by Richard Craggs who was last with us in Fiddler on the Roof. Also returning is Ali Sturla who will be playing Mabel. Ali’s last show with us was Guys and Dolls when she played Sarah. Welcome back to them both! Newcomer Sam Dunn will be playing Frederic, Keith Reynolds is the Major General, Carl Benfield plays the Sergeant of Police, Chris Lewis plays Samuel, and Kat Clowes is one of the Major-General’s daughters. Other parts are still to be cast, and of course it’s not too late to come and join us in this fabulous
We have to end our article on a sad note this month. One of our long-time friends and Life Member, Peter Meadows, passed away recently, and many past and present Members of AMTG attended to say a final goodbye to him, along with his wife Winnie (also a Life Member), family and friends. The church was packed to the rafters for the service, and it was a poignant and fitting tribute to Peter to see so many people there. 90
show. Rehearsals are on Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings, and if you would like to come along to see how much fun you could have, then please send an email to enquiries@amtg.org. uk to get further details. Tickets will be on sale soon, and for further information about our Box Office, please go to our website – www.amtg.org.uk – where the online booking system will be going live in the near future. As this is the last Ashby Life issue of the year, AMTG would like to wish all our supporters, friends and associates our best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Have a wonderful, peaceful time, and we look forward to seeing you in 2019.
Peter’s last stage performance with us was as the Priest in The Sound of Music. He had the most wonderful voice and presence on stage – he was a fine comedy actor too – and always went out of his way to make sure everyone was happy. It is difficult to sum Peter up in a few words, but probably the most fitting description of him is he was a perfect gentleman, always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. Our thoughts are with Winnie and Peter’s family at this sad time.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS The Biennial Ian Clews Quiz was held in the Packington Memorial Hall and attracted ten teams of six players. Triumphant were the “Rachel Rileys”, but the evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended who appreciated an excellent fish-and-chip supper. Thanks must be paid to the Quizmaster, Ivan Hallam, and his assistant, Patricia Clews. Nearly £500 was raised for Museum funds. We are already looking forward to the next one! Museum Christmas cards are selling well - do pop in to see not only the cards, but a good range of local gifts, including a new range of ceramic mugs with Ashby scenes on them. The final temporary exhibition opened on Monday 5th November. It is dedicated to all those who served in the Great War - not only those who
sadly lost their lives, but also those who thankfully returned. Plans are well advanced for next years displays. Recent donations have included two original “porter’s” lamps which were in use at Ashby Station over one hundred years ago. We are also hoping to display medieval artefacts in a new Showcase in the Zouche Gallery next year.

ON THE BEAT ‘Lock up and light up’ – that’s the message from Leicestershire Police as the winter months draw in and nights fall darker. Burglaries tend to peak throughout October, November, December and January so communities within Leicestershire are being encouraged to review their home security. Leicestershire Police’s Inspector Simon Preston said: “The message around this campaign is really simple and clear… Lock up Light up. “Leaving a house in darkness acts as an open invite to thieves so make sure your home is locked up and lit up as the evenings get darker.” Our advice to residents is: • Be pro-active by having good window locks and strong deadlocks on doors and locks on garden sheds • Always lock doors behind you and remove the key from the lock. Hide keys away from doors along with other valuables including handbags, car keys and cash • Consider investing in light timers which are

inexpensive, widely accessible and give the impression someone is home. • If you’re going on holiday or away for a long period of time, avoid posting about being away on social media and tell a trusted neighbour how long you will be away for • And, always ask yourself: Is it locked up? Is it lit up? Is it secure? For further information on how to protect your home or business from burglars visit our website or follow #lockuplightup on Twitter. PET’S CORNER
What foods should you avoid feeding your dog this Christmas? As tempting as it is to share your favourite festive treats with your dog, there are certain foods they shouldn’t eat – and some are potentially deadly. So which ones should you avoid giving to your dog this Christmas? Turkey Turkey is a rich meat that can disturrb a dog’s digestive system, potentially to the point of serious illness. Some dogs may be fine with a tiny amount of white boneless turkey meat, but the skin is very fatty and the bones are a choking hazard. Mince pies, Christmas pudding, and Christmas cake Raisins are severely toxic to dogs, with grape and raisin poisoning being a comm mon problem often requiring veterinaryy intervention to prevent further serious health issues – one of thesee being kidney failure. Chocolate hat Chocolate is one Christmas treat th needs to be avoided at all costs, un nless
you buy doggy chocs for your pet. Chocolate contains a compound that’s poisonous to dogs – in fact, chocolate poisoning is so serious that if they eat too much they’ll need to have their stomach pumped. Nuts Nuts can cause severe gastro-iintestinal problems for your dog, with obstruction of the bowel being a particular issue. Some varieties of nut, including pecans and walnuts, can bring on seizures and should be avoided at all costs. Clearly there’s a case for watching your dog very carefully over Christmas. It’s all too easy to leave chocolate or nuts lying around, and they’re only too quick to take advantage of the fact.

SEASONAL RECIPES
CHRISTMAS
mincemeat slice This delicious festive slice can be served warm as a pud with custard, thick cream or brandy butter or simply cool completely and serve instead of mince pies. YOU WILL NEED l l
l
l l l l
225g plain flour 165g unsalted butter, chilled and diced 1 egg yolk blended with 1 tbsp cold water 75g caster sugar 300g good quality mincemeat 50g ground almonds 2 tbsp flaked almonds
MAKES 1 Ready 2 1hr 15m in plus ch ins il and coo ling ling
METHOD 1. Sift the flour into a large bowl and rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles very fine breadcrumbs (alternatively pulse in a food processor until fine breadcrumbs). 2. Remove 100g of the breadcrumb mixture and cover and chill in the fridge. Stir 25g of the sugar into the remaining mixture, then stir in the egg and water and mix to a firm dough (adding a little more water if needed). Knead lightly then wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas mark 6. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm square tart tin. Prick the pastry all over with a fork. Line the pastry case with baking paper and baking beans and bake for 10 minutes. Remove the lining paper and beans and bake for a further 5-7 minutes until the pastry is crisp and pale golden. Cool slightly. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4. 4. Spread the mincemeat in the pastry case. Mix the rest of the sugar and the ground almonds into the reserved pastry crumb mixture and scatter over the mincemeat to cover completely. 5. Return the tin to the oven and bake for a further 25-30 minutes or until the crumble topping is pale golden. Scatter over the flaked almonds and leave to cool before removing from the tin and cutting into 12-14 thin slices. TOP TIP Add some ďŹ nely chopped toasted hazelnuts or walnuts to the crumble topping for an extra nutty avour.

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS
Playing our roles at Ashby Venture Theatre At the Ashby Venture Theatre we have many volunteers both onstage and backstage which make our productions happen. If you’d like to get involved or meet us just drop by on a Monday evening after 8pm! Have you ever wondered how the society picks from the thousands of plays available? Directors usually submit a play of their choice to a group of members called the play reading committee. This group sets the programme of plays for the year which they think our audiences will love. Once a director has their chosen play approved its time for them to choose their actors. Short group auditions are held where different members try reading aloud parts.

Eight weeks before opening night rehearsals start. The set evolves over the same time period as the backstage crew gradually build, paint and dress it. Costumes and props are fitted and finalised towards the end of the rehearsal period. Lighting and sound are tested at the ‘technical rehearsal’which usually happens a week before opening night.
On opening night the director hands over to the stage manager who ensures the production goes smoothly. Making sure our audiences have the most enjoyable night possible, we have yet more volunteer members running front of house and serving you at the bar!
