WHAT’S ON FOR FAMILIES
Stonehurst Farm
With half term almost upon us you may be considering how to keep the kids entertained in this colder weather. Here are our top tips for February family fun…..
Loughborough
Enjoy a great day out at Stonehurst Family Farm, an authentic, friendly and fun farm park. Stonehurst Farm is a proper working family farm where you can meet and feed the friendly animals, collect freshly laid eggs, swing in the straw barn, enjoy tractor rides, pony rides, hold baby animals, explore the nature trail and see what you can catch “pond dipping”. All this plus two super playgrounds, a delightful tea shop, farm shop and a fantastic motor museum! Please see their website www.stonehurstfarm.co.uk for more info and admission prices.
Zog Activity Trail -
Hicks Lodge, Moira
Wrap up warm and get set for a wonderful new family trail from the brilliant minds behind The Highway Rat and Gruffalo. Follow panels and complete activities along the way as you head on a forest journey with Zog. Look out for characters from the story, uncover hidden signs on reveal panels and learn as Zog did at dragon school. The trail starts at the playground entrance. Activity packs are available to purchase from Grounds Café during opening times and cost just £3.
Climbing Wall
Greenbank Leisure Centre, CivicWay, Swadlincote
Staunton Harold Estate & Ferrers Centre Enjoy a beautiful crisp walk in the Staunton Harold estate followed by a warming drink or a bite to eat at either the Peach House Restaurant based in the Garden Centre or perhaps the Staunton Stables Tearooms based in the Ferrers Centre. In colder weather the kids will also love a look round the Victorian Model Shop or perhaps Paint a Pot for some creative fun. For further info & opening times please see their websites www.ferrerscentre.co.uk and www.stauntonharoldnurseries.co.uk/
If the weather is bad outside a great indoor activity to wear the kids out is the new Apex Climbing Centre. The 16 station indoor climbing centre has a variety of different designs and difficulties for the ultimate challenge. The great thing is that no experience is needed at all, they’ll get you strapped into the harness and it’s go go go for 60 minutes of fun as you race to the top and complete the challenges. ST HELEN’S CHURCH & HERITAGE CENTRE
Old crafts and new shoots …and a tiger Anyone who is familiar with the book or the film ‘The Life of Pi’ may have felt quite concerned to see that our Heritage Talk this month is about Richard Parker, whom they will know as a fierce Bengal tiger. Fear not. Moira Ackers, a member of the Church Monuments Society, will talk about the Burton Alabaster Men of the 16th Century, with particular reference to the work of another, non-feline, Richard Parker, who designed and made the stunning carving on the ancient table tomb in St Helen’s Church. Moira’s talk will be at 7.30 pm on Monday 4th February. (£3 including refreshments.) Having tempted you to venture out in early February we hope that as the month progresses, you will be looking forward to the coming of Spring. We hope you’ll agree that Spring seems like a good time to learn new things and to grow new shoots in our
own minds. That’s why, on Wednesday 20th February, when the children will be enjoying their half term holiday, we’ll be offering them a fun learning opportunity. At our Learn to Weave Workshop, parents can help their children to make a loom and weave their own design to hang on the wall. Or perhaps they’d prefer to make a Friendship Bracelet, to wear or to give to a friend. Both workshops are £1 per child. So don’t sit at home and hibernate this month, come along and join in the February fun.

SPOTLIGHT ON...
The Royal Voluntary Service The Royal Voluntary Service is one of the largest voluntary service organisations in the country and inspires and enables 20,000 volunteers to give their skills, experience, energy and time to help people in need in hospitals, at home and in the community. Locally in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland they support approximately 2,000 older people per year with our services. Their volunteers do the simple things which make a real difference:• Chatting to and supporting older people at home • Helping older people access support and services in their community • Simple, everyday practical tasks in the home • Transport older people to appointments, shopping or social gatherings • Running groups or social activities in the local community Demand for their services has increased to unprecedented levels and in this, their 80th year, they are asking for people to come forward to volunteer in the local community. Teresa Gibbs – Commissioned Services Operations Manager for Royal Voluntary Service explains:
“The demand for our services is always increasing and as a result of this we are looking to recruit more volunteers to allow us to continue to offer the support to local older people. Our volunteers make a significant and positive difference to older people’s lives and without their incredible contribution we would certainly not be able to provide the current level and range of services.” Chris Cordle, a retired NHS medical psychologist from Leicester, is a Royal Voluntary Service volunteer. She delivers the charity’s Home from Hospital service which helps settle older people back into home after a hospital stay. She says: “I missed the satisfaction of working with people - I loved that part of my job. Volunteering has filled that gap. I enjoy working with older people, hearing their stories and helping them to achieve their aims. Much of my career was about motivating and helping people, and that’s what I’m still doing now. I really enjoy encouraging people to achieve their personal targets. It’s very satisfying.” The Royal Voluntary Service would really like to hear from local people who may be interested in this very worthwhile volunteering opportunity, a couple of hours per week really can make a real difference to the quality of older people’s lives. To find out more please email leicsrutlandhub@ royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or call 0116 2667706. For more information on the Royal Voluntary Service, please visit www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk

ASHBEIAN MTG NEWS
We’re getting ready for Pirates of Penzance! At the time of writing this article we are 12 weeks from our opeening night at Ashby School Theatre and rehearsals are busy, excitin ng and thoroughly enjoyable! Our producer/director for Pirates of Penzance is Alan Hutchinson, former Headmaster of Ivanhoe College, and his knowledge and experience of musical theatre is astounding – he is also a very good choreographer! Alan has supported AMTG for many years, and is highly regarded and respected by all – he has been our President for over 20 years, and over those years has also been our rehearsal pianist, and Musical Director. At a recent visit to the Theatre, Alan and three members of the team, started planning and plotting scenery, lighting/sound and it is always exciting to be involved at this crucial level of any show. We were joined by Musical Director Catherine Matthews, and Ali Jackson, both from Ashby School, and it was wonderful to visualise the scenes, action and story coming to life.
nce that back to the early 60s, and it is pure coinciden we are performing Pirates of Penzance 50 years after the original production. This version is the updated Broadway show, so you can expect a little more flourish, comedy, movement and dance – choreographer Leanne O’Brien is also working her magic with us – you can imagine how much work is involved with learning to dance with swords in belts!
We are delighted to be bringing our production back to Ashby for this season – our links to the town go

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS
Video gamers to battle sleep in 24-hour charity challenge…. Committed video gamers NexTekGaming, part of PC Clinic in Huntingdon Court, Ashby are gearing up to burn the midnight gaming oil on Saturday 23rd through to Sunday 24th February to raise money for people with disabilities. They’ll be playing video games continuously for 24 hours as part of GameBlast19, the UK’s largest gaming marathon weekend, and are aiming to raise £500 for the charity SpecialEffect, who use technology to help people with disabilities benefit from the fun and inclusion of video games. NexTek Gaming are asking people to help them reach their target by sponsoring them via their online fundraising page. Phil Barnfield is one of the NexTek Gaming organisers and wants to reach out to everyone on the importance of the work done by SpecialEffect. He said, “Being a bunch of gamers ourselves makes you realise how much it must mean for those with disabilities to be able to do what we take for granted. The work of SpecialEffect is outstanding and it gives those less able to fulfil their dreams.” “Playing for 24 hours is a big challenge, but we’re asking people to attempt it to help the thousands

of people who, because of a disability, can only sit and watch other people have all the fun with family and friends.” said Tom Donegan, the charity’s Events Organiser. “GameBlast is an opportunity for people to do what they love best and level the playing field for people with disabilities at the same time.” The charity is inviting teams of friends, family members and work colleagues to join the GameBlast event, which has been likened to a ‘Children in Need’ for gamers. It’s backed by big names in the games industry including GAME, Twitch, and Jagex, and aims to raise £100,000. “NexTek Gaming’s efforts will help people like John who never thought he’d be able to play video games again because his muscular dystrophy stopped him using a controller,” said Tom. “The sponsorship raised through the GameBlast weekend will change the lives of many more people like John through the gift of gaming fun and inclusivity.” You can sponsor their marathon by texting ‘NTGC99’ and the amount you’d like to donate to 70070. Alternatively you can donate via their JustGiving page –www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ nextekgaming-gb19 More details of the GameBlast19 event can be found at www.gameblast19.org.uk Anyone who would like to be involved in the gaming marathon can join NexTek Gaming for free. VENTURE THEATRE NEWS
Great Drama & Music Events at Ashby’s Theatre The creative juices continue to flow at the Venture Theatre with a new play being chosen for our April slot. Ten Rods is a play written by one of our own members – something we rarely consider unless the play is exceptionally well written. Ten Rods is one such play, its author is Terry Hammond, a relatively new member with a great talent. The play is both thought provoking and funny – an ideal combination. Tickets are £9. Coming up in February is our next major production, London Assurance, by Dion Boucicault. It is a hilarious comedy set in the 17th Century with interesting settings and costumes. If you like a restoration play with lots of laughs then this is the play for you. In March we have more great jazz from the virtuoso violinist Ben Holder and his Quartet. It takes place at 8pm on Saturday 9th March. Ben is a thrilling musician, playing music in the style of Stephan Grappelli. Don’t delay - tickets
are selling fast. On Saturday 16th March we present IOTA, a great folk/rock band with 3 musicians of great renown. The band comprises Sally Barker, Marion Fleetwood and Anna Ryder. IOTA are well known in their own right as well as this new combination. They have played with Tom Jones, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, The Poozies and many more well known artists. Tickets cost £12. Tickets are available from Ashby Tourist Information Centre (01530 411 767) or www.ashbyventuretheatre.org.uk

Financial advice from our financial adviser Ian Staley Contact 01530 567020
DOES YOUR MONEY NEED A PERSONAL TRAINER? If you’re determined to make 2019 the year you get into shape, you might want to think about giving your finances a makeover too. Sometimes we can all benefit from a little help and encouragement to ensure our finances are fit and healthy. We can help you see things more clearly and put in place the right financial plans for your future. Toning up your savings At some stage in our lives we are all going to need savings to fall back on. As we head towards the end of the tax year, it’s a good idea to maximise the amount you’re saving into your ISA. The allowance for the 2018-19 tax year is a generous £20,000, and the tax benefits are attractive. Adding pensions muscle Whatever stage you’ve reached in your working life, it’s worth reviewing your pension provision. Remember, if you want a carefree and comfortable retirement, it’s up to you to provide for it. The state pension will only ever be a safety net and won’t do more than cover the basics.

Maintaining 20:20 vision on your protection plans It’s worth keeping life policies under review, as over the years your circumstances change. It pays to check you have enough cover for your current situation. There are policies that cover death and critical illness, provide an income if you’re unable to work due to an accident or sickness, and ones that can protect your mortgage payments. If you’ve recently bought a house, had a baby or changed jobs this could mean you need to think about a different type of cover to meet your new needs. Flexing your investments If it’s been a while since your investments were checked out, this could be a good time to revisit your portfolio. We will ensure that your investments remain in line with your risk profile and, if necessary, rebalance your assets to ensure you achieve your financial goals.
So, make 2019 the year you keep your financial plan fit and well. Why not schedule a review meeting? Please contact Ian Staley on 01530 567020.

GardeninG Tips:
Moss Special
Gardens may be prone to problems with moss in these colder months. Kevin from Green Thumb Ashby explains why and offers some valuable advice on how to tackle this issue. LAWN ISSUES: MOSS Moss thrives in damp and shady areas; lawns usually affected are those with heavy surface thatch or clay soil. It is important never to cut your lawn less than 25mm (1”) as scalped lawns are also prone to moss. WILL RAKING GET RID OF MOSS? Raking will only remove the dead moss, it will not cure it. Instead, we recommend hollow-tine aeration and scarification, which eliminates one of the main causes of moss - thatch. Moss loves a moist, rich environment and therefore loves thatch.
BEFORE
THATCH Thatch is the matted layer, made up of living and dead organic matter, found between the grass plant leaf and the soil surface. Thatch (over 15mm or ½”) creates ideal conditions for moss and disease to thrive and, by reducing water, air and nutrients getting to the roots, it also prevents the grass plant from flourishing. HOW CAN GREENTHUMB HELP? To reduce thatch that has built up during the year, we recommend machine work hollow-tine aeration and scarification annually. This will also improve the growing conditions of the grass plant, resulting in a much healthier lawn. HOLLOW-TINE AERATION Hollow-tine aeration punches out thousands of cores from the lawn, this thins out sub-surface thatch and reduces compaction. SCARIFICATION Scarification is a rigorous and thorough operation which uses knives and blades to remove surface thatch; its main objective is not moss removal, but the removal of the cause of moss.
AFTER
POST SCARIFICATION This treatment is a valuable micro-nutrient which helps with recovery and also prevents moss spores from re-establishing. Green Thumb offer a free lawn health check any time at no cost, to all current or potential customers and will make themselves available to answer any questions or concerns you have about your lawn. Call 01530 244552 or email ashby@greenthumb. co.uk today for a free lawn health check and see how Green Thumb can benefit your lawn.

If your lawn is beyond rep air due to our sw eltering summer, ask us about our Lawn Ma keover - the best way to ge t ‘the GreenThumb lawn.’
Now is the time to start conditioning your lawn to get the best results in the upcoming months - a little investment now will pay dividends in the near future! Following this year’s hot and dry summer, your lawn really needs help to fully recover. It could now be suffering with high levels of compaction and thatch, which will encourage moss development. To tackle these problems, you need these essential treatments: • Nutragreen 3 & 4 treatments • Moss Control • Aeration • Scarification
Our seasonal treatments start from just £15*. These exceptional weather conditions have led to high demand; to avoid disappointment, we are advising that you book your treatments early.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS Although this is a quieter season for visitors, the Museum volunteers have been hard at work. Much of the Great War exhibition has been taken down, although the display on Philip Bent VC will remain as a reminder and example of the sacrifice made by so many in that conflict. A very small temporary display on veterinary instruments, kindly donated by the late John Tuckey, and hospital artefacts from the, alas, closed Ashby Cottage Hospital stands in the middle of the Loudoun Gallery. It is hoped to mount an exhibition on Earl Ferrers and Staunton Harold Hall in February.
from the very start, in our archives, along with backnumbers of the magazines for St. Helen’s, Holy Trinity, Baptist, Congregational and Methodist churches. We also store the Packington Church magazines and the Packington Post. The ever-growing archives are available for research or just general reading on Monday and Wednesday mornings.
A list of guided walks and in-house talks will soon be published on our website and posters relating to these events will be put up nearer the time. The Museum is very grateful to the Ashby Life for its long and productive relationship; we have all its issues,

FITNESS TIPS WITH FITNESS REPUBLIC
Why, Why, Why………. With the new year in full swing, my mission this year is too really help you stick to your health & fitness plan! With this in mind, I want to start with getting to the bottom of something that I think will really help you. I’m the kind of person that needs to understand why I’m doing something. It’s just not enough for me to just do it! I’ve always been like that, asking lots of questions, researching, studying etc. And there really isn’t a more important question in fitness than - why. When we embark on a fitness plan, we often say that we want to get fit, lose weight, tone up, build muscle. All of which is amazing, but digging deeper as to the why will really help you get more out of your plan and also keep you motivated for longer. By this I mean, say you wanted to get fitter, I would ask you why do you want to get fitter? Is there a special occasion you need to be fitter for? Is there a sporting activity you want to improve in? Are there any health problems that being fitter would improve or even eradicate?
Sometimes we need to dig at least 2-3 layeers down to get to the real reason of why you want to achieve your goals. A really good example of this is where one of my clients mentioned that they wanted to lose weight. After really digging a layer deeper, the outcome was that they wanted to lose a stone in weight, another layer and that they had a medical problem that being heavier was a danger, and another layer deeper and that being overweight was really making them lose confidence and feel sad. So, you can see that for this client, getting fitter was a result that would affect lots of other more important problems. As fitness professionals, it is our job to help you dig d gett to the real reasons wh hy you want a deep and particular result and why are setting a specific goal. This way we can then action a plan to help you achieve it the best way we can. Try asking yourself before embarking on a plan what are your real underlying reasons. Try digging 3 layers deep, seee what you come you with.
Second to the why, is the how! So, you know why you wan nt to get in better shape, next is how? This is where you need to seek out a gym/trainer that can understand you and get the best out of you! Not every gym is the same. It may havee the same equipment, same décor, same classes, same opening times etc but finding a gym that is right for you takes a bit more.
50
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
In my experience, the more important aspect is, is the location right so that I will be able to attend regularly? Will I feel comfortable? Are the coaches experienced in what I need? Are they approachable? Will it be fun? Will I get results? These questions are so important and are some of the things that will definitely help you keep attending and get the results that you’re after.
Top of my list is fun! I’ve been training now for over 30 years and I definitely wouldn’t have been doing this if it wasn’t fun! When I’m in the gym I always have a great time, there’s lots of laughter, lots of client interaction, lots of chat and banter! I always vary my programme, often every week as my attention span is very small! Variety keeps me going, and this is where (particularly at my gym) the coaches need to be really approachable to give you constant help and advice. Tune in next month and we’ll show you how to get your legs and butt in the best shape ever! By Simon Pellecchia Fitness Republic

Wildflower meadows Wildflower meadows should be seen in every county in the UK under HRH The Prince of Wales’ Coronation Meadows project. Leicestershire has the Loughborough Big Meadow which is one of the largest schemes, being the equivalent in size to 100 football pitches. This area was known as ‘lammas’ meadow or floodplain. The Big Meadow is the flagship for the county and seed is collected and used to create new meadows nearby (natural seeding). It is the only site in the county for the scarce narrow-leaved water-dropwort. This process of ‘natural seeding’ helps continue the local identity of meadows. Meadows had been in decline, with 97% eradicated since the 1930s but this initiative is helping to reverse that. In Derbyshire the Coronation Meadow is Rose End Meadows at Cromford which boats 242 different wild flowers and common spotted orchids in summer. Nearby meadows which have been the recipients of its seed are Yarncliff Barn meadows on the Longshaw Estate, and Clover Close at Elvaston. Shropshire’s Cornonation Meadow is Rod Wood at Cheddleton which has had its seed transported to recipient meadow Cecilly Brook at Cheadle. Internationally, a revised interest in wild flowers has inspired many to create their own meadows and the Coronation project has made 90 new meadows across 60 countries. The perception that you can create a meadow by just sowing a packet of seeds is a myth. New sites have to be prepared. Grass has to be stripped back and the introduction of yellow rattle, which is semi-parasitic,

helps to reduce vigorous grasses allowing the ox eye daisy and common sorrel to grow. In addition, many tens of thousands of plug plants have been grown in pop-up nurseries often manned by volunteers to plant into the meadows. In terms of managing the meadows, generally the hay is cut in late summer once the flowers have shed their seed and the areas are often grazed until late winter. The benefit to wildlife by attracting butterflies, bugs and insects is immense. In Green Park in London, the Queen’s Meadow, created in 2017, has proved that wildflower meadows aren’t just for the countryside. In Braunstone in Leicester, the People’s Meadow has been suggested locally as the public’s favourite place to see wild flowers. Further information is available at www.coronationmeadows.org.uk

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH
A day to remember Do you think of February as a glum month full of dark nights and cold weather? Think again! A quick Google search will reveal it’s actually a month full of quirky International Awareness Days - so why not do something different this year? You could plan an alternative February 14th by heading to your local library to celebrate Library Lovers Day. Or take the time to post a handwritten message to someone as part of Send a Card to a Friend Day on the 7th. Then there’s the dramatically named Day of the Crêpe on 2nd for those who can’t wait for Shrove Tuesday. You could re-ignite those circus dreams on the 23rd with World Sword Swallowers Day. Perhaps one to avoid is National Sickie Day on the 4th. Some of my favourite reasons for sickies from a

Readers Digest survey cited spider-related stress; llama illness; being bitten by a duck; bats in the hair; and just eating too much cat food!! Okay, so I may have got a little carried away with Google. Whether you celebrate a random International Awareness Day, or not, there is one awareness which applies to every day of the year. “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118 v24. Whatever we do each day, that day is a gift from God. It’s good to stop and remember this, reflecting and being thankful for what God does for us each and every day. Useful passage to look up: 1 Psalm 118 Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby. www.ashbychurch.co.uk

BODY MATTERS
Achilles Tendinopathy We treat a number of patients who have problems with their Achilles tendon. It is a band of strong fibres connecting the muscles at the back of the calf, onto the heel bone. The calf compromises of 2 muscles the Gastrocnemius and Soleus. During contraction of the calf, tension is placed through the Achilles tendon. Your tendons are designed to withstand high force and repetitive loading, however on occasions where the load applied is too high, the tendon can sustain micro tears. If high loads are continually applied it prevents the tendon from repairing and damage gradually worsens; resulting in an Achilles tendinopathy. Symptoms include pain and stiffness at the back of the ankle and heel, which is usually worse first thing in the morning. Anyone can have a tendinopathy, but people who make the same motions over and over in their jobs, sports or daily activities are at higher risk. The condition is common among runners, hill walkers, and sports involving jumping. You may be predisposed if you are training excessively with a quick increase in demand, are overweight or have over-pronated (flat) feet. 66
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
A thorough physiotherapy examination is usually sufficient to diagnose an Achilles Tendinopathy. Treatments such as: massage, stretches, joint mobilisations and ultrasound can help improve flexibility, pain and function. If required orthotics can also be provided to correct foot posture or relieve pain. New research shows a strengthening exercise programme should be commenced to load the tendon and is vital to remould tendon scar tissue and prevent reoccurrence. Your physiotherapist can guide you on the grading of exercise programmes. Most patients with this condition heal well with physiotherapy, however it can take 4 to 6 months. In some cases these tendon injuries can turn chronic when someone continues activity despite nagging pain. At ProPhysio we have had great results using our new shockwave therapy machine which accelerates the healing process in chronic tendons, this has a success rate of 77% in national results.

ON THE BEAT Telephone fraud is the number one route for fraudsters into people’s homes, with an average of one third of reported frauds being carried out over the telephone. A fraudster’s narrative can change daily, with criminals purporting to be many organisations including the police, banks or retailers to scam their victim. This can make them difficult to spot so remember to be wary when speaking to anyone on the phone you don’t know. If you’re not sure about a caller or anything they are asking you then we recommend the following: Don’t reveal personal details. Don’t be rushed. Ring the organisation they claim to be from. Hang up if you feel harassed or intimidated. There are a number of products and services out there which can help reduce the number of calls you receive whether they are likely to be nuisance calls or simply cold calls from companies trying to sell you something. These include Truecall - This setting blocks every call on the planet apart from the numbers of friends and family that have been inputted into the system.
Telephone Preference Service (TPS) – Although it won’t stop fraudsters it is a great way of reducing call volume into the home. BT Call Protect – This free service is only available to BT customers, it will block some known fraudulent numbers/nuisance calls but will not stop all telephone fraud. Sky Shield - Only available to SKY customers, it will not stop all telephone fraud but will reduce call volume into the home. MONEY MATTERS
Five misconceptions
about Making Tax Digital and Small Businesses Making Tax Digital from 1 April 2019 (unless you have been deferred) should make for a smoother-run business yet many are not prepared for the change. Here are five common misunderstandings small businesses are making about going digital.
1. Paper records will be ok so long as the totals are recorded in MTD-compliant software
Making Tax Digital means that each and every transaction must be recorded electronically. Part of the intention behind MTD is that manual entry increases the risk of errors, and all data transfer, not just totals, has to be done digitally. You can still keep paper records but you will have to duplicate the work by entering every item into an MTD-compliant software package, which doubles your workload.
2. I already file my returns using the HMRC Gateway – I don’t need to do anything.
The current web portal is not the same as the new MTD system. From April 2019, it will close for VAT return submissions for businesses with a turnover of more than the threshold of £85,000. From April 2020 it will close to those filing corporation and income tax returns as well. You will need to file using MTD-compliant software and HMRC itself is not providing the software.
3. I don’t have to think about it till 2020
It depends on the size of your business and how efficient
82
Find us online at www.ashbylife.co.uk
your current systems are. Even if you are voluntarily registered for VAT, i.e. under the £85,000 turnover threshold, you will need to be aware of your monthly turnover, as if it tips over you will have to comply – even if it subsequently drops again.
4. My accountant deals with it all
Your accountant (if registered as your tax agent) will be able to use their own MTD-compliant software to file your VAT returns (and other tax returns from 2020). But you will need a digital link (that is, one that does not need manual intervention) from your data to theirs. So if you do your own bookkeeping, you may need new software – micro-businesses recording income and expenditure on a spreadsheet will no longer be compliant. MTD isn’t just about a digital return. It’s about keeping all your records digitally.
5. Businesses will have to keep electronic copies of all documents and provide more information to HMRC
HMRC is not asking you to scan paper documents or keep digital copies of all documents, though it may be more efficient for you to do so. Retention periods for documentation remain the same as before – in general, for six years after the end of the last financial year (though there are some exceptions). You will have to keep digital records for the same period.
If you need any help don’t hesitate to get in touch with Lisa Emery on 01530 416688 or email lisa.emery@baldwinandco.co.uk
MAKING TAX DIGITAL HMRC digital tax platform ‘remains on track’ for the 1st April deadline*
With two months until the use of HMRC’s digital platform for filing VAT returns becomes mandatory for businesses, the government has claimed work is ‘on track’. This means that business who file quarterly returns, the new digital platform will be compulsory from 7 August onwards, taking into account their VAT period from the 1st April 2019. *Unless you have been deferred

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS
Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation hosts a community pledge wall in support of Time to Talk Day. Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation will be holding an event on Thursday 7th February from 10.00am until 12noon as part of a nation-wide push to get people talking more openly about mental health for one day. Time to Talk Day is organised by Time to Change, the campaign to change how we all think and act about mental health problems, led by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness. Time to Talk Day aims to get as many people as possible talking about mental health and this year, there are lots of different ways to have a conversation about mental health. Whether that is talking on a walk, or listening over a cuppa, conversations can make a big difference. Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation will join thousands of other groups, organisations, schools and members of the public, who will all be having conversations about mental health on Time to Talk Day. Did you know 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year? Many of us are too afraid to talk about it. Starting a conversation about mental health might seem daunting but

simply sending a text, checking in on a friend or sharing something on social media can break the ice. Helen Baxter, Activities Coordinator at Shuttlewood Clarke Foundation explains: “We are taking part in Time to Talk Day because mental health is a topic that we should all feel able to talk about. Having these all important conversations can make a big difference to so many people. The more we talk - the more lives we can change. Drop in for a cup of tea, a chat and pin a note to our community pledge wall!’
The free drop in event will take place on Thursday 7th February from 10.00am until 12noon at Ulverscroft Grange, Whitwick Road, Ulverscroft, Leicestershire, LE67 9QB. For more details please contact Helen Baxter on 01530 244 914 or visit www.shuttlewood-clarke.org

THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS Hi all, our team is in the thick of hedgelaying at the moment. We have an ancient hedge at Thornton which we are currently working on. If a hedge is left unmaintained, some plants may die off, and others will do their best to develop into trees over the course of years. We have this situation here, and it is proving an interesting challenge for the team of volunteers. We have some old hawthorn bushes up to a foot thick at the base, twenty feet high, all snarled and tangled round each other. Then comes a gap of twelve feet or so, then comes the next ancient hawthorn. All hidden in a blackthorn thicket. Developing this sensitively into an even, attractive, stockproof barrier sounds to the uninitiated as if it would be well nigh impossible! I have to say, I am immensely proud of how my volunteers have taken on this rather daunting sow’s ear. They are doing a brilliant job. We have completed a good stretch already, and when we
put the heathering (decorative top binding) on, it is going to look fantastic! There is a picture above of the work in progress, and I will make a note to show you a picture of the finished article next month. In March we will be working on a very different hedge – young willow, each stem pliant and the largest only two inches thick. By then we will be able to do a hedge like that one handed! Do get in touch if you’d want to come and try it out! kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk.

CELEBRATING LOCAL AUTHORS Thank you to loccal poet, Brian Wood,, who has kin ndly shared two of his poems for your enjoyment.
Past Loves Remembered
Days that have passed, can never be, resurrected to modern day living. Although we may dwell on the ‘might have been’, a hypothetical, imaginary scene. Moments to wonder, in private times. Precious thoughts to keep fresh in our minds.
Those long days passed, they can never be, re-created, - lived over again. We may have chosen, the right or the wrong, reliving words of our favourite songs. Stop to wonder now and again, at how quickly these intervals, drifted away. Where are those past friends, those past loves remembered, where are those loves, I still think of this day.
A New Beginning
Hang on to the coat tails of winter, absorb all those beautiful things you see. Life is a whiter shade of summer, days getting shorter, skies growing dimmer, A darkness where nobody notices me. Outside on the streets of our English towns, The Salvation Army play carols and sing. Hang on to their words, from a holy beginning, before they are lost to a forthcoming spring. And leave New Year resolutions, to those in high places. preaching their pledges from plasticine faces. Hang on to the words, of commitment they offer, to those who find poverty deep in their pockets. The band plays on, though nobody is listening, could this be the start of a new beginning, hang on to each glimmer, of hope that you see, through a darkness where nobody notices me.

PET’S CORNER
Why it’s important to groom your pet this spring Grooming is an important part of your pet care regime throughout the year, but when spring arrives you can be sure your furry friend will want to shed their coat in the warmer weather as much as we do. So what do you need to consider when grooming your pet this springtime? Brush them at least once a day Longhaired cats and dogs should be brushed at least once a day at this time of year. It not only makes them feel more comfortable, but also prevents knots and tangles developing. If the weather is particularly warm it may also be worthwhile having your dog trimmed – this makes them easier to groom, and also reduces the time you have to spend vacuuming. Watch out for fleas and ticks Grooming your pet regularly means you’re more likely to spot fleas or ticks that have taken up residence in their fur. Encouraged out into the environment by the warmer weather, they can be difficult to spot unless you’re close to your pet. Dealing effectively with fleas and ticks is an important consideration, however, as ticks in particular can cause serious illness.
T: M: E: W:
Avoiding hairballs When your pet grooms itself, loose hairs are ingested and can cause a blockage in their digestive tract. Cats in particular are fastidious about grooming themselves, which makes hairballs a common issue, especially for longhaired breeds. Regular grooming with a brush helps to avoid this problem by reducing the amount of fur entering their system.

BOOK REVIEWS
Books to get you talking This month’s books are perfect for discussing at your book club, dissecting over dinner and chatting about on social media. The Silence of the Girls Pat Barker The Silence of the Girls is a vivid retelling of Homer’s Iliad. However, this time the focus is on the minor characters, namely the women taken as ‘spoils of war’. Queen Briseis is taken as a sex slave by Achilles when he destroys her city. Through Briseis we hear of the other female slaves in the encampment – women who are forced to serve the men that killed their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons.
Codename Villanelle Luke Jennings If you loved the BBC’s Killing Eve, don’t miss the book it was based on. Villanelle is a cold-blooded assassin, who you just can’t help but root for. Eve is the woman tasked with stopping her. The storyline is quite different from that of the TV series and has less dark humour, but there’s still plenty of suspense to keep you reading.
This is Going to Hurt Adam Kay From 100 hour weeks to moral conundrums and emergency operations, the life of a junior doctor is far from easy. Adam Kay reveals all through six years of diary entries. Surprisingly, This is Going to Hurt is an incredibly funny book, particularly the numerous footnotes explaining hospital lingo. However, Kay also gives us an insight into the stark reality of life on the frontline of the NHS.
Roar Cecelia Ahern Ahern’s latest book is a collection of satirical short stories. Each focuses on an unnamed female protagonist and almost all are a literal interpretation of a stereotype or saying. The trophy wife’s partner builds her a shelf to sit on, where she can be admired by his friends and family. The woman who feels invisible to society starts to slowly disappear. There are plenty of themes to digest and discuss and a lot of enjoyment to be had in each tale.
Once Upon a River Diane Setterfield A man stumbles into The Swan inn carrying the body of what appears to be a dead girl in his arms. A few hours later, the little girl stirs. But who is she? Part adult fairy tale, part folk tale, Once Upon a River celebrates the art of storytelling and weaves numerous stories into one rich tapestry. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Sunny Side Up Susan Calman Comedian and Strictly star Susan Calman is on a mission to encourage ‘joy, kindness and community’ with her latest book. There are anecdotes from her own life and examples of random acts of kindness that have been shared by her fans. Sunny Side Up is full of warmth, positivity and (ofcourse) plenty of humour.

CHESS PUZZLE
Whi hitittee too pla lay ay and mate in two As you know, there could be difficult times ahead, and the winter’s not over yet. To take your mind off all that, here’s a really hard chess puzzle. It could make your brains pop out, but if you survive, there’s a reassuring, “Well done to those at home who managed to solved it,” as Richard Osman might say. If you desire a white-knuckle, face-to-face fist fight over a chess board, why not join us at the Ivanhoe Social Club in Ashby, every Thursday at 7.30pm. Juniors, beginners, and experts are all welcome. Look us up at www.ashbychess.com for more details and team news. Our chess puzzle comes courtesy of local resident Richard Vann, the solution can be found on page 116 - should you need it!
